The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

Carrick was more nervous than he’d like to admit in the given situation. Guns pointed at him and what’s worse they were allegedly robbing one of his greatest lyrical role models. His younger years back home so full of angst. He didn’t look back at it fondly. His younger years. Ol’ Mackellen’s music still held up, no matter what the ball boy next to him thought. Carrick being Carrick however maintained his game face, and cracked a smile through his swollen face.
”Well, didn’t hurt ta ask. How often ya run inta yer childhood hero right?” he said sighing a little at Zek’s comment then looked back to the armed guards then back to the rapper then back to Zek who seemed to be hungry for more, Carrick at this point was content with the gold and the blue swede shoes. Maybe they’d fit him. ”Yer still hungry? And what do ya mean? I’m still better looking than you.” he said with a chuckle.
“What the **** is wrong with you two?” asked the lyrical genius. One the guards threw a punch and clocked Carrick in the gut then stepped back. ”He was the one talking.” he pointed to Zek and exhaled trying to catch his breath. He was suddenly thankful for the ‘quality time’ he spent with his father. Dear ol’ da hit harder.
“Danish? You won’t be leaving here alive.” Carrick still out of breath couldn’t comment on the cliché but held a finger up to hopefully get a moment as he wheezed air back into his lungs. ”Ya did him dirty, he’s.” large inhale and another ‘moment’ finger, ”exacting revenge. Falling yer sage words of wisdom. ‘Eye fer an eye gonna make ya blind’ cause he’s out of his mind.” he said quoting more words from the Ol’ man himself, Carrick just added another rhyme so it flowed better.
The alleged criminal cracked a smile, “How do you think this is going to go down? You two gonna take on everyone here to get out of here? Please, I’m not a fool.” Carrick heard another gun cock, ”I challenge ya to an exchange of words.” Carrick said thinking quickly and remembering Ol’ Mackellen’s words. He said he’d never turn it down.
”Hear ya need a degree fer that.” he said more to himself but he didn’t know what she was capable was now that she was older. Maybe her powers evolved. ”Figured ya knew enough about birds.” that and her class was closer to him than Doc. Maybe he wasn’t even in his office. His tail flicked the more he thought about it. It was a heat of the moment decision and this was the next best option. His fingers were already chewed up from the small flying raptor.
”Saw you first, needed gold but took the bronze!” he too raised his voice then lowered it his hands still behind his head. If it wasn’t for the bird cradled in her arms he would have gotten louder. He didn’t lose at shouting matches. Not anymore.
”My problem?” Carrick chuckled while his tail flicked in irritation, trying to change the subject ”Clearly the problem is littering!” he looked to her then arched nose and lip into a snarl. He opened the door and avoided her gaze.
”Sure, let’s give the guy that tried to do the right thing by getting an adult the bird that already pecked the **** out of his fingers while he tried to handle things on his own.” he met the challenge and held the door with his foot and reached out revealing his pecked fingers in the process. ”Come on! I’ll take it from here.” he waved his hand and then held out his arms to cradle the bird. His other forms didn’t see the point.
”Love ta explain it to Doc.” he flashed his pointed canines in a smile.
While it was only moments, seconds more than likely it didn’t feel that way to Carrick. If it wasn’t for him wanting to make sure the smaller apex predator of the sky was going to be alright he would have left a while ago. She didn’t tell him to wait if she did he would have been long gone. Very rarely could anyone convince him to stay put.
”Not sure, seems like a good day to pout.” he said throwing his hands behind his head and keeping them there while the scowl on his face continued to look anywhere but Liz as she started to walk back to the mansion. ”Well, good thing I wasted me time grabbing ya instead of Doc.”
Carrick followed but his usual strut was a little bit slower so he had the option of not talking to Liz if she said something that upset him. It wasn’t her fault that he didn’t think ‘Doc’ first before her. She was supposedly the animal expert. His tail flicked behind him in irritation as his knuckles throbbed from having a disagreement with the tree earlier.
”That yer professional opinion, teach?” he rolled his eyes and followed occasionally trying to look over her shoulder to see the bird. He wouldn’t admit it but he was worried for the little creature.
It had been a few months since the shifter last threw anything trying to hit a target last time he won Zek a giant stuffed animal. This time though he doubted he’d get a giant stuffed animal for hitting the targets. Maybe a pat on the back or a ‘good job’. Carrick could already feel his motivation waning unless... bragging rights. Something Carrick could find the motivation for.
While he had experience throwing things before he himself was a great actor and went through the motions to humor her. Reenacting the motions and copying her explanation his tail flicked behind him as a cat would it’s prey. ”So like this?” he asked once knowing it was pretty close to how she was instructing him.
To give his temporary teacher credit she had an easier form to remember than what he was taught several years ago. He was taught speed was king. Pointy end out and throw it quick and you’ll hit the target. She focused more on form and it felt a bit more natural than what he was taught. Then again it was for hitting stationary targets.
”Extra? No need fer it. Pointy end goes inta yer target right?” he asked flashing his pointy canines in a smile. He gently took the blade from her. Making sure he didn’t cut himself as he took it then toyed with it in his hands before tossing up, catching the blade and releasing it towards the targeted tree. Far flashier then she had showed him, he had to put some show in anything he did.
The shifter missed by a foot sending it into the ground behind the tree. At least it was visible. His tail flicked behind him and his nostrils flared in mild irritation. ”Eh, used ta aiming at a bullseye.” he was aiming at the tree... and missed. Shrugging ”never said was any good, care ta show me up?”
”Blessing and a curse.” he said nodding his head and opening his wings a bit to show them off slightly bummed his joke went over her head, clearly he thought himself funnier than he was. ”Even rarer to have wings that work proper.” he said nodding his head more now shifting his mismatched colored eyes to the nearest fish that swam by him. His tail flicked and he was tempted to reach out to it and catch it.
Reading the placcard, ”Says the spins are venomous?” he said scanning the information, ”Oh and the teeth.” he continued to read in the dim light spouting information as he read it putting his own spin on it. ”Not deadly unless ya have a allergic raction, blisters, localized pain and.... edible so long as ya don’t eat the bad bits.” he nodded his head and then added, ”Can charge if feeling aggressive.” he nodded his head, ”Sure, I do the same.”
His eyes shifted over to Juniper and he smirked, ”Aye, just a bit.” he said opening his wings in the same mock bow he offered the Princess often. ”Not even my best face is on.” he chuckled to himself and continued to look around as she wondered to the next area. His eyes focused on the tank Juniper was looking at.
”Dunno.... there’s a few of them.” he said pushing his face close to the tank, ”Little itty bitty ones.” his eyes picked up on the movement but he had to focus. ”And there’s the father. Giving birth ta all the little ones.” he said kinda taken aback by the fact that the males carried and birthed the children. ”Pretty sure mine was in a pub when I was born.” he chuckled trying not to think about the heavy topic of family.
”What ya expect me to use something else?” Carrick said as he opened his wings and erupted upwards out of the smoke only to fold them up to pounce on another guard who was busy looking down instead of up. Thankfully for Carrick the ceilings were high enough for him to maneuver properly. With a thud he collapsed on and forced the guard to the floor. ”Like some two bit kids party magician? Don’t insult me. I’ll be billing ya fer it.” the shifter said only to get tackled by another guard. How many did this guy have on payroll?
”Bout time!” he shouted as he tried to roll the guy off of him with little luck. ”Ya think It’s too late ta ask fer an autograph?” his wings pushed him up giving him a little movement so he could roll so he did and in turn got the guard off of him. ”Is it too late fer an autograph?” this time he asked the rapper, gangster and terrible role model Carrick had been listening to for decades.
He didn’t look pleased. “It’s Mackellean, you obviously know who I am. You two got some balls trying to rob me.” Carrick tried not to giggle after the comment and Zek and after seeing the naked photograph of the ‘Entrepeneur’ before him. ”Pffffffttttt well, some one’s gotta.” someone slugged him in the face and he spat out a little more blood before turning and hitting his attacker. This time a lone gun shot sounded it was his idol.
“I’m not done talking.” his guards all stood at attention and Carrick slowly stood upright making sure not to stand next to Zek in case bullets were to start flying. The guards around him made good shields. “Now, why you trying to rob me?” he looked from Zek to Carrick and Carrick’s tail flicked, ”Not trying. We did.” technically the vault was empty hence the successful robbery. “Not quite yet, you two need to make it out of here alive. I don’t plan on letting that happen.
“Need to make an example of you.”
”Need to make an example of you!” Carrick said at the same time as the rapper only more excitedly. ”Oh, it’s even better hearing ya say it in person.” he grinned with a fat lip and a swollen face where he was struck.
”Those are sting rays, Manta’s are the ones with the big mouth and the weird horns.” he said putting his fingers by his mouth trying to act out the Manta ray. ”and don’t like being on camera. Unfortunately there’s not enough guys with wings so I’m pretty easy to point out.” he said deciding he needed to clear the air now that he knew she had abilities like him. ”I’m well... a mutant.” he said redirecting his hands into a over emphasized shrug and a smirk.
Following Juniper was in the shifter’s best interest not only was she the entrance and exit without setting off all the alarms, getting arrested and then having to deal with his moms again but she also was farm more entraining to be around. Carrick almost choked on his words when the phased into one of the exhibits and pulled out a jellyfish. Thankfully the non-poisonous type. He didn’t want to pee on anyone today. Was that still how you were supposed to deal with them? His eyes glanced over to the information sign on the exhibit. It didn’t mention urine so he doubted it was true.
”Imagine like a bubble. One ya can’t pop... or shouldn’t?” he asked watching Juniper hold the think with curiosity. His tail flicked behind him wondering what it would be like bat it. Instead he just poked the top of the head staying away from the tendrils... just in case. ”What about mutants?” he asked smirking and then stepping away from the tank. ”Asking fer a friend.”
The next closest tank was a smaller one. One that read ‘Venomous’ ”Found yer dangerous one.” Carrick said pointing out the ‘lion fish’ ”Bit of a family resemblance no?” Carrick asked flicking his bushy tail towards the thing. ”Digging the mane though.”
Chirp. ‘You didn’t, but ya can tell me all ya want. He looked over his shoulder to make sure the passengers were.... she was standing on him. Cocking his head to the side he shrugged his shoulders causing all on him to shift as well. He never had anyone stand on him before when he flew. He was not sure how it would work but decided Juniper could use her powers, he could catch her or Zek could gold ball her if she lost her footing.
His eyes shifted eagerly to the open sky when it appeared his tail whipped forward and hit Zek on the shoulder before returning back to it’s mischievous self behind him. Chirp, quick screech! ‘Let’s go! Goodbye my worshippers! Yer god has got better **** to do then hang around with yer horny ***es!’
Carrick’s wings shot open and he flapped a few times trying to gauge the air flow before he leapt and bounded upwards letting his wings get a little more pull behind him. The trio slowly ascended to the surface his head craning on occasion to make sure Juniper didn’t fall off.
After a few seconds he decided he could speed up and out of the swearers where the air smelled better... well better for this part of town. Bypassing the ground he kept rising into the air waiting to get an idea where they exited.
His head swam for a moment as both of the voices in the back of his mind took offense to her saying they were wrong. Neither thought they were wrong. Even Carrick thought she was wrong. To have the ability to fly all your life and then have it taken away from you? Forced to the ground. Carrick didn’t like thinking about what would happen to him if something happened to his wings so instead of getting into another argument he rolled his mismatched colored eyes.
”Not much of a life.” he said loud enough to hear but still under his breath. Trying to ignore the way she pulled her hair over her shoulder. Carrick reluctantly had a flashback to a younger Liz doing something similar when she was helping him study for the same exam she gave him now. His feathers ruffled and he shook the memory out.
”Sure, lie down have a nap.” he said turning and tempted to swing at the tree again but just punched the air. He didn’t roar this time or yell. If she was napping she’d probably be grumpier than usual from him waking her. That and he knew the birds life depended on it. ”Fine. Just hurry up.” he said not wanting to be around his former girlfriend. The less time he spent with her the better.
”Why fight ya like a man? I’m clearly something more superior. Not a god, close? Angel?” he said bragging as he flapped overhead staring down at the goon. He lowered then gently touched down between them having noticed the other goon was down and the knife out of sight.
”Yer just jealous is all, it’s alright don’t be. Ya just weren’t blessed with my showmanship.” he said as he produced a small ruby from what seemed like his sleeve and waved it around. It was small but it glinted in the red light. ”Now, I don’t want ta leave ya both face down in an alley way in this part of town. Maybe I’m feeling nostalgic for a simpler time with simpler people.” he said insulting the pair yet again.
Carrick could feel his face swelling as he talked, ”Tell ya what mate, ya take the ruby and go and I’ll forget yer breaking our code for a quick score. Ya know I’ve got a big mouth, got no problem shouting it from the rooftops.” he flashed his teeth and tossed the ruby up and down in his hand hoping to distract from his other hand reaching into his pocket till he found what he was looking for.
”It’s a good deal. Real good.” he said bluffing. The ruby was of garbage quality from what his girlfriend told him. Worth nothing but looked shiny at least. ”Ya haven’t a shot against me.” he bragged, ”Been training at that school. Can take a hit better than ever.” that part was true.
”Is it worth getting yer *** kicked? Well at least we have an audience.” his tail flicked behind him kind of hoping he wouldn’t his adrenaline was pumping now and he wanted to keep hitting something but also didn’t want to start shifting. ‘Fight!’ which seemed more likely the longer it went on.
It wasn’t the answer he was hoping for. Instead of hearing anything other than the chaotic laughter of a mad man he heard the footsteps. ”****ing course....” he rolled off of the guard he was sitting on smacking him in the back of the head with a back end of a shoe as he rolled.
The former circus performer jumped, flapped once and landed by the open door as the foot steps approached from the dark room. Carrick pushed against the door with all his might sending it hard into another guard. The door made contact hard then swung back to where he was a second earlier. Suddenly he regretted join Zek. ”Is he a decent guy?” Carrick shouted hoping someone could answer also in hopes it would encourage Zek to hurry.
Carrick’s cat like refluxes kicked into overdrive as he dodged a punch and then a kick. As long as he’d kept himself in sticking distance of someone he hoped they wouldn’t try to dodge fire. ‘Move!’ he leaned forward dodging a blow to the back of the head then jumped upwards sending an attacker back as he took to the air to deliver a kick to the face.
Landing on another guard he jumped again trying to dodge another grab unfortunately his tail found it the ample time to get in the way by swaying into the guards hand giving him a new target for the grab. Carrick’s body tensed and he stopped trying to get away and turned to the grabber letting everyone know what happened to someone who grabbed his tail. ”I just want to know what the man’s like!” he said sending a knee into his face and collapsing on top of him.
Grunting as he landed he reached into his pocket and produced some flash powder and threw it at the ground trying to distract anyone from getting closer while he tried to get back to his feet. Carrick spat out a little blood as he rose.
The shifter blinked as he was called sweet. Was he? Or was it more he didn’t like the fact that other people were trying to take advantage of his skills and he didn’t want himself to be associated with him? Was he worried? Heroes worried. Carrick wasn’t a hero. It seemed like far too much work.
Blonde hair moved next to him and he turned towards it wondering what she was doing leaning into him. He blinked as her lips met his forehead and his face started to light up. His inner monologue on what was going to happen was interrupted again by his other less friendly form. It went from screeching ‘fight’ to yelling ‘Mate!’. His ears grew hot and he averted his gaze. It was enough to distract him. His eyes turned round and he forgot what he was doing.
A purr almost vibrated his vocal cords but stopped when his ‘beasty’ sense went off. Someone tried to stab him. Carrick looked back to the guy with the knife and hand and his red face quickly washed out to one of rage. ‘Mat-Fight!’ his pupils quickly turned to slits again. They must have missed with the knife because he just felt angry so angry it looked liked there was a cracked rainbow of light in front of him. There was no way he was going to just let them rob this woman. This nice, tall woman.
Carrick’s fangs bared and he roared, the man holding the knife dropped it and tried to cover his ears a little too late. Using his wings to help guide in his thrust forward as he pushed off the ground and used his body and fist as a battering ram to the knife holders face. His tail flicked behind him as he continued swinging. He wasn’t the strongest or the fastest or knew any form of martial arts but he had been ‘taught’ by his ‘father’. A notorious ‘pub brawler’ back home. Carrick was a scrapper and scrap the now enraged shifter did.
His knuckles were red with blood after a few punches to the guys face before he realized there was another one. This one managed to land a blow on the side of Carrick’s face one that caused his vision to blur. ‘Fight! Kill!’ ”Not now.” he said reigning his ‘other face’ more upset it was only his beast form that volunteered to step in during a fight but whenever he was flying or doing nothing it was his Gryphon form who wanted to tag it.
Carrick snarled and opened his wings lifting him up into a tackle of the other attacker. Did no one know who he was anymore? His fangs bared he grabbed hold of goon number two lifting him in the process only to let go a second later letting him drop two feet. ”I’m obviously immortal now! Did ya not see him try to stab me?” Carrick bluffed not knowing how the knife didn’t stab him.
The shifter would’ve like to see himself in a crown a bit more trying to visualize what it could look like if... nah, they just started to date and he didn’t want to have any expectations like that. His girlfriend already made it clear she’d only be able to marry some one of royal lineage. Even with the crown Carrick still felt he was only pretending. Shame too. Crown’s he felt he could pull off.
”No way to speak to yer king.” he quipped when they both were staring down the armed guards. It was then he spotted the shine from Zek’s mouth. He put the ‘grills’ in his mouth and he wondered if they had ever been worn... then washed. ”Ewww.” he shook his head. Zek might need to get checked for diseases now. The way Mackellen rapped about it in his earlier works. Clearly Zek wasn’t afraid. The man did have enough money apparently to pay for any kind of cure.
”Eh..... Zeky, bout time we....” a car appeared and all the gunman dropped to the side trying to avoid the vehicle. Two got clipped by it and were down. The other two were down from diving out of the way. ”Never mind.” Carrick said tossing the crown into the dumpster. ”Dibs!” he tossed a gold chain in their next. ”Dibs.” then decided to go play distraction while his partner in crime ‘allegedly’ played clean up.
”Hello!” he said quickly kicking the nearest guy in the face disorienting him with his own blood adding to his confusion. Carrick grabbed the shot gun he was wielding and slid it back into the room of quickly disappearing treasures. He opened his wings and went for the other guard that wasn’t currently struggling to free themselves from under the car.
”Gotta ask, working for ‘em. Worth it? I bet it is.” he pounced the guy and sat on him till Zek gave him an ‘all clear’ or more guards came. Carrick wasn’t sure what was first.
He’d get over the pain. It was something he was accustomed to. True different from shifting but it was pain all the same. One of the hands was bleeding for a different reason now. His top two knuckles on his hand split and he shook it trying to get the pain to recede. His pupils dilated more and eventually turned to cat like slits.
”I’d like ta argue.” he shook his hand now. The comment was more to himself than her. He was brash, loud and angry often and he liked to blame his shifted forms but they could take all the blame. He was currently more made at himself that he missed her communicating to the bird. It was something he always envied of her. To see the recognition in their eyes as they call down. Liz was a friend... to the animals she communicated with. Not him.
They couldn’t be friends again. Not after the way she left him without so much of ‘goodbye’. His tail flicked in irritation when he thought about it. He looked back to the tree he just hit and wondered if it was time for round two. He looked at his non-injured hand and then to the tree again. The Irishman didn’t hear no bell.
”Somehow? Glad I grabbed the biologist!” Carrick rolled his eyes, this time his comments were directed to her ”Little bird got caught up in it. Probably tried to fly and ****ed his wing good up in response.” he said looking at the little hawk who looked significantly calmer than when he first found it.
”Not what the other two are saying.” he said rubbing his hand. ”They think I should have killed ‘em.” he giving his hand another shake. The blood already trying to seal the split knuckles. ”Can’t have much of a life if ya can’t fly again.” he said stubbornly.
His growl faded when the giant of a woman waved to him. His eyes turned to her and he gave a half awkward wave while still trying to make himself look bigger than he was. Not for her but for the two now thugs Carrick used to run around town with. They called him Carrie. He didn’t like being called that anymore.
Carrick frowned some confused when the overly friendly lady given the situation said she was fine. She didn’t seem that way but then again she could have had a gun on her or she was the gun. The Irishman looked to the pair and then studied the knife. ”He’s lying to ya.” he said dropping down in between them in a soft landing. His wings folded behind him still not sure what to make of the situation.
”I... was... worried?” the shifter said more surprised with his own feelings. Because he was. Carrick didn’t do heroics, not unless he got something out of it. This whole situation seemed odd to him. Not just because of the people trying to do the robbing but because he was trying to figure out why he cared all of a sudden? Was it because she was nice to him?
The ‘retired’ thief folded his arms, ”They looked like they wanted to cause some trouble with ya after you were dropping the money on the table.” he tried to explain wondering if she had an attention span shorter than his. ”Guessing they saw an easy score.” his mismatched colored eyes shifted over to the pair.
”And what are ya even doing with a knife?” Carrick seemed more frustrated now than before. Maybe he shouldn’t have even bothered? “Just hand over the money. You know what Carrie. You hand yours over too. You’re living too cushy of a life now that your back at the school.” Carrick flashed his fangs in a smile his tail flicking alerting all of an impending attack. ”Really?”
