The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

AJ blinked. He'd killed her favorite plant and she was... inviting him inside?
"You have ice? Oh thankfu-" he caught himself before he swore "-I was going to have to order some. My freezer is really like more of a second fridge." AJ pulled his foot up to keep himself from actually putting weight on it, but that meant any forward movement was going to actually have to require help. He wasn't used to needing help, he was used to being the one to give it.
He hobbled with help, trying not to lean too heavily when he stepped with his good foot. He knew exactly how much muscle weighed and also knew how much he tried to pack the muscle on. He was small, but dense.
"Y'know, your head might've made a better crutch than your shoulder." He tried to keep a straight face, but the twinkle of amusement in his eyes made it obvious that he was teasing. Twisted ankle beggars couldn't be crutch choosers.
Besides, she'd said it was only one floor, right?
"Oh wow. You weren't kidding about the lift." AJ was amazed once he saw it, that it wasn't operating by crank wheel and actually had a button, if the button even worked.

Well. It was official. AJ was a murderer. The thought made him unbearably sad. The plant would lose its individuality and rejoin the energy of the universe. It would no longer be Pippa's favorite.
She might not be a paramedic, but he was. "Ice, elevation, compression. Could I impose on you for a bit? The faster I get it wrapped, the less blood can pool and the faster it'll be back to normal. It'll be the difference of being tender tomorrow or being worthless. If you could just call me a cab-" He wasn't about to lay down in here with the glass, though how he was supposed to get from the top floor to the bottom with only a Pippa-sized crutch... "Please tell me this is a building with an elevator."

"I'm not really a shouter." He admitted to Pippa's joke, and then immediately cringed when she'd said he'd landed on her favorite. He tested his ankle again and it was seriously tender. Standing was okay, but walking... he just didn't want to try walking yet.
"Do you- uh- is it 'cause you eat it? Are all these eating plants?" Was that a dumb question? AJ tried to scope the garden again, but without turning or taking a step he was rather limited.
"I know plenty of stuff, but pretty much zero when it comes to plants." In case that wasn't already obvious, he freely admitted his deficiencies. AJ pulled a disembodied leaf from the cuff of his shirt sleeve and offered that, too, to Pippa. "Can you save it?"

"I am EMS. Some of the craziest people you'll meet, if you ever actually ask 'em." He confirmed. And honestly her hand was more than welcome. He smiled his thanks and took the offered hand.
"Tell the the truth, if I'd shouted 'parkour' when we first met, would I be more or less crazy than I look now?" With Pippa's help he stood and a tinkle of shards and dirt showered around him. He tested his ankle which felt tender, but not wholly unusable. Some ice and TLC and he'd likely be okay tomorrow. The real sticking point was getting home in the meantime.
"So you garden." He tried to give a respectful scope of the rest of the garden, the parts he hadn't wrecked anyway. "Have a favorite plant?"

"Just a couple of regular jerks." An undertone of laughter colored his voice when AJ confirmed her sentiment. With a wry shake of his head, he grabbed his book up out of the dirt and brushed off the dirty side. Unlike before, their sitting side by side without looking at the other was no longer a source of tension. He could probably go back to studying, but somehow it felt a bit less important after what had already transpired.
> ”Why don’t we start over?”
"Let's." He received her hand, surprised again by the presence of calluses. He was not, however, worried about the name mismatch. He had a bit of an incorrect nickname himself. "Ajeet Kapoor, but AJ is what everyone calls me. It's nice to officially meet you, Niko." He had to tamp down on several sly remarks about potential PR spin for this as well as their previous indiscretions.
"No drinks in this do-over so that's a much safer and smoother introduction." He had to joke somehow rather than let the atmosphere drop. They'd only just become... friends... of a sort.
Rather than letting go of her hand when it was appropriate, though, AJ found himself pulling Niko's hand toward himself so he could scope them out. Her hand was still soft, probably the world's best moisturizers were involved, but his calluses were catching on his as he brought her hand up toward his face. "What in the world are you doing to get calluses like these?"

He ducked his head sheepishly. There was no way that came out right. Annnnnd then it was confirmed by the look in her eyes. Pity. He sputtered, but then the woman suggested she call an ambulance and AJ just lost it. He laughed and chuckled and had to hold his stomach, lest he start crying from the giggles.
"I am- Oh this is coming out all wrong- Okay. Let's start again." He cleared his throat and put on his "I'm the adult in the room" voice. "Hi, I'm AJ and I work for the city's emergency medical service. I swear to you I am not laughing at you, it's just this is so stupid and I'm embarrassed. Last I checked, I was of sound mind, even if I am an idiot. I can say with authority that I don't need an ambulance. If you called EMS for me, I would never hear the end of it.
It's possible I've sprained something, but I'm trying to minimize any other damage I might do before I dare stand. Thank you, for grooming me like a monkey, by the way. I can't exactly see what's in my hair." He was obviously still amused, partially teasing, and hoping like hell she didn't start hitting him with that metal hand shovel he saw earlier.
"The idiot part can be confirmed by the fact that I jumped from the rooftop over there." He pointed, but there were too many green leaves between here and there from his angle on the floor. "I do parkour. I wanted to see if I could cross the street and I way overshot. No gecko hands or crazy legs or anything." He held up his hands just in case she wanted to double check his conclusions. "Just pure unadulterated idiocy and I really am sorry. I didn't mean for any of this."

She just sort of pursed her lips against his promises to make things right. That lit a fire in AJ's heart. Naw. He was going to make it better than alright. She would see. By the end he was going to turn this into a gay luxury space commune. Fall proof and self-watering. If he could scrape together the funds, that was.
Mostly likely, he would buy two tomato plants and a new pane glass.
But he still hadn't answered the question of how. AJ opened his mouth. He closed his mouth. He found that he didn't have a good answer that wouldn't make him sound insane or dangerous. So... the truth then.

AJ's stomach fell. Fuuuuuuudge. A community garden? He couldn't just Kool-Aid man through and feel awful about wrecking someone's tomato plants. Some old lady probably poured her heart into weeding in here. He couldn't disrespect that level of heart. "Okay. I take full responsibility. I'll find a way to fix this. I don't- I'm not exactly flush with cash at the moment?" He cringed. That sounded like he was trying to get out of it.
His attempt at looking harmless seemed to succeed. And his attempt to look competent enough to get himself out of the mess failed. Considering he'd just fallen through a roof, he wasn't going to complain.
> "May I?"
"Yes ma'am. I- I'm-" What? An adrenaline junkie? AJ sighed. "I'm an idiot. I shouldn't have been out here in the first place."

She took his magazine! He looked over to give her a 'hey!' kind of protest look, but... she looked almost tired. He'd been expecting a fight and instead... Instead, he felt a total rush of guilt.
> ”I’m sorry.”
"No, I-" He wanted to say he was the jerk here, but she wasn't done and he desperately didn't want to cut her off. He tamped down on his feelings because his weren't the only ones. She was just gearing to lay into him. And he deserved whatever justice she would mete out.
Except it was all apology. If his jaw was hanging a little open and his brows were a little drawn, it was just the confusion showing. Never. Not ever once had someone in a position of privilege apologized to him. AJ settled back and looked out past his text book toward the open park and the natural beauty of the little slice of nature here. He'd thought he'd known a thing and in assuming he knew, now he was... he was the ass.
> ”I...also know why you did it,”
His attention snapped back to Niko.
"Maybe. But it was my choice. Between my word of honor with no known consequence and your... virtue. I was selfish, ultimately." He slumped a bit on the bench, totally forgetting that his medical text was laying across his knees. It thunked to the ground.

Unfortunately, being in the medical field was more complicated than "the leg bone's connected to the foot bone." AJ turned the page back one as he re-re-re-read the same portion of text. He was tired. Not dead on his feet, but with a few more hours of banging his head against this text he would be.
Thankfully, or not so thankfully, someone slipped a tabloid between him and the incomprehensible text. What he saw now was far, far more understandable. Some might even say his response was primal.
Melissa spoke, which surprised him since he hadn't noticed her joining him on the bench and as far as the list of people he might expect to drop in to say "hi" she wasn't even on it.
He didn't bother looking over at her. AJ was pretty sure about what he'd see. And since she'd provided the chance to get a good look, he brought the magazine closer to really scope it out.
"Yeah. Could definitely have been worse." And after all that hullabaloo about the stain on his jacket, he'd shoved the damn rental at her so she could cover up... and then he'd left it.

He had soil in his shorts and she was worried about why he'd been on the roof. Their priorities were vastly out of alignment. He tried to downplay it. No reason to freak out the normies. "It was a nice day. I'd planned to go underground to find one of those uh- what are they? Abandoned subway station tunnels? But it was too nice, so I decided I'd enjoy it better if I could stay in the sunshine. I work nights usually so I gotta be careful to make sure I go outside."
AJ realized that he was rambling when a tinkle of glass broke off from above and landed in his hair. Augh. He squinted up at the hole he'd made. That was going to cost him, he was sure. And he didn't exactly have extra funds laying around.
"Will that be difficult to fix?" He pointed up, as if she needed a reminder of which way he came from. He both did and didn't want to get up. She looked kind of scared and, while AJ wasn't tall, there was a difference between a guy on the ground and a guy who Koolaid man'd through a ceiling and then got up like it was nothing.
Okay then, time to show off how very not okay he was. AJ tried to brush himself off while not further adding to the cuts on his hands and tried not to further damage things around him as he made an attempt.

It would have been fine if he'd been able to land on his feet. Instead he was half in a bucket planter thing and half on hard glass-sprinkled concrete. He didn't cushion it well and, well, the glass made him unable to keep the one foot he was trying to land on. He went sideways and the bucket of plant and half the dirt dumped on top of him.
In all the fails that were his attempt to land well, AJ hadn't heard that there was another person in here until she spoke.
> "Are you okay?..."
"Just tryina put down roots." He had to shake his head to at least clear his face and beard of the dirt before he could joke. What a mess. He brushed himself off and eased his foot out of the now mostly empty planter. AJ moved gingerly, afraid of the glass and more than a little afraid to see what his non-dirt foot might look like. He hoped it wasn't a sprain, but it had whipped out from under him so rapidly, he'd felt a twinge.
All in all, he'd been lucky. Really lucky.
He made it up to something like sitting, using mostly his abductors. "Sorry about the uh- everything." He picked up the tomato, it's cage had folded and broken open somewhere off to the side. AJ offered the plant to the woman. "I think I'm okay, mostly." He was noticing more than a few scratches, surface levels mostly. Honestly he felt a bit in shock about the whole thing. How dumb had he been to try to land on a glass building?

It was perfect. The sun was shining, the wind wasn't too bad up here, and the chill in the air kept him from overheating when he pushed off between walls and hoisted higher. He'd planned to go low today, maybe exploring some of the abandoned tunnels beneath the city, but the perfect weather had called him to climb instead. The wind in his hair made it feel like he was soaring, conquering, living.
AJ knew what he was doing was stupid. The ViewTube videos he learned from were probably mutants or doctored or... well, this just wasn't something a grown human man should do. But it was the only way he could defy the laws of nature. And it was good to feel his blood pumping, good that he could look at a wall that said "no entry" and just decide that it didn't apply to him.
Unfortunately, after a certain height, the handholds got a bit more risky. Thankfully, New York wasn't all one height and the buildings were close enough that even he could push off of one and land the next one, so long as there wasn't a street between them.
Man, that was a real bummer. Was he going to have to get down to cross the street? AJ surveyed his options and decided there was one angle he could try. It wasn't ideal, the building across the way looked like it had a glass structure on top. He found a protruding jump off point that would aim him across a single lane if he could somehow roll enough... slap the ground enough... stop himself before he bumped into the glass. It looked... possible.
He backed up and gave himself a full running start.
It almost worked. He made it across the street with ease. Actually, his problem was that he made it too far. He wasn't going to hit the ground in front of the glass structure, he was going to land right on top.
He slammed into it was a crack of what he hoped was only glass, and rolled and slid until he finally came to a stop on the ceiling of the glass building.
Did he... make it? AJ looked around. He seemed okay-ish. It was a little bit different landing than he'd expected. He carefully tried to stand, and regretted putting all his weight in such a concentrated area when the glass and his feet suddenly went out from underneath him.
He cringed. It was the flash, yes. But it was also a pulling in movement that made his hand tip just so. He had to spill his drink down the front of her dress. Distasteful, but oddly poetic considering how their evening had started. For a moment, even he couldn't believe he'd done it. AJ looked up at Melissa and then around in a semi-panic for a fire exit to yeet himself out of or a napkin, whichever he might spot first.
"Oh. I am-" Not an actor? His brain helpfully supplied. A terrible person? "-really sorry." He cringed again as someone stepped up to take his still not fully empty cup from his hand. Had he not put that down somewhere? He was really out of sorts. AJ shrugged out of his jacket and all but shoved it into her hands so that she could cover up the now incredibly clingy fabric before jumping down off the front of the small stage. It wasn't a big drop, but there had been stairs. If he'd been thinking clearly and wanted to avoid further attention, he should have taken the stairs instead.
Nat Pagel gave him a greedy thumb up, his other hand on a horizontal phone... probably filming. AJ took a step toward him, a growl simmering just below the surface but... but no. He had the check. He did the deed. Now he could just leave.

AJ would postulate that it was easy for most of the room to write a check since, a) loooots of old fogies here and b) most of them wouldn't miss a few Benjamins here and there. For someone like AJ, who wasn't even going to get to keep the check, he couldn't even afford to tip a stripper, not that he'd ever had the opportunity to. Most strippers he saw were busy dying and not there to perform.
Clearly, AJ should go see a stripper after he got paid...
He spun the steel bracelet on his wrist, taking care not to spill his untouched drink as he took a place near the end of the line. What could he even do to embarrass Melissa? She seemed nigh unflappable. AJ snuck another glance at the devil, but Mr. Pagel was otherwise engaged talking to a decrepit... somebody. And AJ was decidedly a nobody. He couldn't decide if Pagel would hold him at his word, but... dammit AJ always tried.
It was an impossible situation and he let his anger simmer so that once it was his turn to accept his check his usually easy smile was stiff and his eyes were smoldering. He put his hand on the check and stopped for the camera to take it's picture, snaking his drink hand around to Melissa's shoulder.
"Thank you." He wasn't rude, but his tone didn't exactly sound grateful either. "The department really needs this." It wasn't enough for raises no doubt, considering the finite amount, but maybe some repairs to the meat wagons. Fresh paint. That kind of stuff. He couldn't wait to get out of this over-glitzed world and back to reality.
