The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

William he had done as asked. He had not harmed the guards. They may have experienced pain, but they were as of then unharmed. That didn’t stop Kealey from chastizing him for… Gravity? Needless to say, it was irritating. He had used an innovative, and difficult, use of his power to accomplish the task at hand as directed and was told off. What kind of internalized mutaphobia was that nonsense?
Biting back on a retort, William let it pass. It was not the time and Kealey probably felt his protest anyway. Besides, William would be busy. The gun had been handed to him. William nodded to the person who handed him the gun and then said, ”You will want to stand back.”
Giving it a beat, William checked that no one was close to him as he dropped the magazine from the pistol and clumsily worked the action to eject the round from the chamber. His hand blocked the ejection and it fell out of the magazine well. William was momentarily embarrassed but hid it behind the electrical breakdown that replaced his corona as his power ramped up generation.
Instead of the eerie purplish glow, electricity crackled as it arced from him to anything nearby. The ground, the gun, up into the air where it diffused. Over the next few seconds it went from a few arcs sparking into existence, traveling a for a moment before disappearing, a constant stream of arcs all over him.
There was a discussion of what to do with the guards. William didn’t concern himself with that. Instead he focused on his irritation and set the gun on the ground. He balanced it on the frame such that the beaver tail was up in the air. With one hand on either side, electricity arced from one hand to the other in a brilliant flash. The arc was constant and ripping through the gun.
The longer the arc held the brighter it became and the more the pistol glowed where it lanced through. After a good long moment there was sputter and molten material moved. The electricity was cutting through the steel.
The man William had targeted went down. Hard. Such is life when you lose all control of your muscles. It was no doubt incredibly painful, but it was less-than lethal like a normal Taser. As long as William kept the power cycling, the man would be unable to move to resist. As soon as William stopped, the man would be free to move again.
The skirmish raged around William as he kept his target subdued. Everyone moved, everyone worked toward the goal. Well, almost, one if them had become a cheerleader. Pom-poms and all.
There were a myriad of powers on display. It was an impressive display of what mutants were capable of, why they were the next to inherit the Earth. Teleporting, object manifestation, strength, speed, ghosts. It was fantastic.
Kealey called out that the guards were being compelled. Lee criticized the level of force being used. William knew she couldn’t have meant him so he carried on. His electric power was dialed down to a very low current, like a taser. The risk of death or permanent injury was already acceptable, but with William controlling the electricity as it was in range, he kept it from endangering the heart.
As the guards were being zip tied or otherwise restrained William chimed in, ”Someone get ready to tie this guy up. When I stop, he is free to resist again.” If not harming weren’t the objective, William could simply increase the current and turn out the man’s lights.
As for the gun, William chimmed in, ”Let me have it. I’ll slag the thing.” William could feel his power nearly warmed up enough to accomplish the feat. They weren’t in a hurry… yet.
Names and powers shared, the group was in full coordination mode. Kealey laid out a plan, the group would split. Will would go with Kealey, Lee, and Tarin to the Egyptian wing. To where the cause of the whole threat was. William was less nervous about that than he thought he should be. Still there allowing William to keep an alert edge, but not as strong as it had been.
The other members of the group were tasked with essentially everything else. Coordination had already begun among them as Ashton was offering plastic to Quin for her to use.
They had the very roughest of plans, but it was better than before. Before it was barely a nebulous idea of a plan. Now there was some concreteness to the plan and more people to execute it. That was an amazing improvement.
While it was all being ironed out, William kept to himself. His power slowly fired, a small charge being generated inside himself. It leaked out as fast as he was generating it which caused his coronal discharge. The goal wasn’t the light show, rather it was to raise the limit on his ability to discharge in a controlled manner.
It seemed their opponent was unwilling to give William the time to reach his peak. The people who had moved to shoo them away from the building before were approaching again. Eerily asking them all to leave.
Lee took point, moving toward the people. Literal ghosts disappeared before later reappearing by the people with Lee. The other Will moved to grab one of them.
William smiled. He could actually shine here.
A TASER is an electrical device that, depending on the model, utilizes pulsed DC current to promote neuromuscular incapacitation. It was what made it more effective than a traditional stun gun, hot shot, or cattle prod. Depending on the model it fires off upwards of 50,000 volts down its wires with an output at 2.1 milliamps to 3.6 milliamps. Sure, a taser could out range William since it could fire out to 35 feet, but once William was within five… It was bad news for people.
The voltage and amperage were the easy part. The cycle rate of 19 Hertz was the hard part.
William closed to within five feet of one of the employees, reached out a hand, and a bolt of electricity sizzled through the air between them. The bolt was gone and replaced by another, then another than another. A crackling filled the air as the bolts sprang into existence then died only to be replaced by another at an incredibly fast rate.
Over the next few seconds the rate of discharge increased. William didn't quite reach a TASER’s cycle rate but he got in the ballpark. Why rely on pain compliance when you can simply interrupt the brain’s connection to the skeletal muscles.
William made a face when the man who later identified himself as Ashton called him kid. It was a small annoyance, not worth mentioning. Besides, Ashton’s focus was directed at his back seat buddy. The same person Kealey was directing her attention towards. The same person who was far too excited about… well, anything but danger in specific.
Ashton had introduced himself. Kealey had introduced herself. William looked at the rearview mirror so he could see the back seat and opened his mouth just in time to clamp it snack shut as someone else materialized in the back seat. The XUV went from a slow, controlled reverse under minimal brake to a sudden stop as William jumped and his foot slammed all the way down on the pedal. Thankfully the vehicle was slow so while it was abrupt it was not of a significant force.
At the same time, a glow started around William as his power kicked on for a moment. William suppressed his surprise and the glow faded away as the small burst of charge William had generated bled off.
The new man was dressed like he was in some old film and he jumped into speaking about a Tarin and Lee and how they were going to be there in a minute. William wondered if those were who they were waiting on? Kealey’s reaction all but confirmed it,
Before their backup arrived Kealey lept into a preparatory speech as William put the XUV in park.
Before long, William could see a group approaching in the mirrors. William rolled down a few windows as they approached. The first to speak seemed to know Ashton and immediately distrusted the man with a firearm.
From there the man, who later identified himself as Tarin, gave a brief rundown of what was ahead. Then Will introduced himself and described his power, followed by Quin doing the same.
Will opened the car door and stepped out before he chimed in, ”I’m William Faraday. I’m an electrical generator.” now out of the vehicle and having taken a step away from it and its electronics William turned on his power. Corona discharge flared to life around him. A purplish glow with various flickering points around him. It was both a show of his power and the first step in his ability to use his power offensively if necessary. As for when and where to go. William would leave that to Kealey. She was the X-Leader in charge. He was nervous and excited but working to keep a neutral face.
Guards talking in unison. That was not creepy in the least. Extra creepy when the mention of hieroglyphics was made. So a group all acting like NPCs with ancient writing on their nametags. William could tell the day would get more bizarre before it made sense.
Kealey made a point to be careful not to injure the guards. William nodded. He could run his power low enough to not cause permanent injuries. Temporary debilitating injuries were possible, assuming none of them had heart conditions.
To William’s question Kealey didn’t think the newcomer, the one who dropped from the sky on a rope was sent as help. This was later confirmed by the the man. He was just there to have, ‘fun.’ Which William decided did not sound good. It was too late to do much about it though as the man had already climbed into the XUV.
No more people falling from the sky, William took the opportunity to lift his foot from the brake. The XUV rolled back away from the museum and the creepy employees outside of it.
Kealey was doing an excellent job as leader, which William appreciated. She was working to manage the two people that they had picked up. One of them was… Confusing? Talking about dance parties, paint balloons, and pantsing the employees. Not to mention the ball of light he had used on the rope to vanish it. William did not envy Kealey running this X-mission.
William noticed the guards moving and gave the XUV a little gas to expedite their movement to the far edge of the parking lot. The backup camera showed a clear path,
Kealey confirmed they were in the right place. William wanted to believe her, but his eyes had him doubting. Other than a few staff heading toward the XUV, nothing was happening.
Until it was.
The man that had the museum staff walling him off turned and quickly hurried over to the XUV. Kealey confirmed the man was one of the three they were meeting. That reassured William, it was less likely he would also be at the wrong place. Probably. After cutting off the museum staff the man word vomited… All about how the staff were doing their jobs. Then, how they should regroup out of the staff’s hair.
After a beat the man asked if Kealey’s husband was named Shin.
Kealey handled the conversation, which William was all too happy to let her do. Key point, she invited the man into the XUV. William, on cue, hit the unlock button on the door and there was a dull clunk as the doors unlocked.
William put the car in reverse to back away from the museum staff that had approached the XUV when someone… slid down a rope? William paused, his mouth slightly agape as the man spoke from the ground. Clearly in tongues, but it was speech.
Turning to Kealey, William asked, ”Is… that another one?”
The call didn’t specify who, just that there would be three others. Three was better than zero, but not knowing who they were or what they could do just didn’t sit well with William. He liked there being a plan. Flying by the seat of his pants was not something he enjoyed, it was something he could do, but he didn’t like it.
One more turn and then the XUV pulled into parking for the museum. There were a few cars in the parking lot, but the XUV had the party lights on. Parking on the street, sidewalk, parking spot, or inside the building were all options. At least that’s what he had been told… The last one William assumed had been a hyperbolic joke.
Up ahead, closer to the building, William could see a man. Beyond the man were six security guards all addressing him.
”Well, someone is here—and security is keeping him out?” William slowed to a stop a few yards behind the man then turned to Kealey as he put the vehicle in park, ”Are we sure this is the place? Their security is still on duty.”
Kealey answered William’s question. Sort of. Eventually. First she spoke about his emotions. William had not spent time around Kealey Shinbo but he knew that the woman was an empath. No matter how good William’s power face was, Kealey could see through it.
William turned the wheel through a turn. A little sloppy, but he wasn’t quite used to driving an SUV. Sure his Edison was sometimes called a boat—it being a full size sedan—but that was somehow more elegant. Efficient. Graceful.
A moment to consider a response to Kealey’s offer was provided by her answering his question. There would be help, but she wasn’t sure who they were or what they could do. That was an irritating response, but not her fault. William suppressed the feeling. He had always been good at burying, suppressing, or at least not showing his feelings so it was odd to be around someone who could feel them. From what William had gathered, he had been even better in his prime. His prime being when he was a high powered attorney who earned money like it was going out of style.
”I am okay.” William said as he found a straight shot and brought the vehicle up to speed. ”My nerves help me. They promote caution. I am not some cowboy, used to jumping headfirst into a situation half cocked.” Well, he liked to think that about himself. Truth be told while he had a fair amount of control at 18… He was still 18. ”I do wish you knew more about our help—I cannot prepare until we arrive. My power would destroy our ride if I got myself ready.”
In his youthfulness, William had a feeling like any situation he was in was one he had to solve. He felt burdened by glorious purpose. He just didn’t know what it was yet.
”Okay. We get there, I turn on the glow, we meet the help, maybe someone knows what to expect?” The statement was half to himself and half to Kealey.
The city was in a state of chaos. First, there had been a day where it seemed every villain in the country had paid New York a visit. Now orders had come down and the X-men were deploying. Some to The USS Gerald R. Ford, some to Times Square, and some to the museum.
William had been tasked with heading to the museum with Kealey Shinbo. William knew Kealey used to be a leader in the X-men but that she had been mostly riding a desk lately. Handling administrative functions. This would be William’s first mission as part of the X-men. He felt he could do without a minder, but this was a step in the process so he would suffer it.
Wearing a more general looking X-men uniform, William collected the keys to the XUV (X-men Utility Vehicle) and hit the garage. Kealey had William driving. He climbed inside, set the GPS, and headed out. He had been driving for years but it was in the fancy Edison electric car that his pre-deaging self had purchased. The XUV was larger than what he was used to but he would manage.
Emergency lights flashing, William drove. The few cars that were on the road moved out of the way. William looked from the road to the GPS, back to the road, then to Kealey and asked, ”When we get there… Are we expecting any assistance? I–it takes time for my power to ramp up.”
Tori asked if it was safe to approach, to which Ion nodded. Once the electricity was no longer arcing off his body it was safe to be around him. The worst someone might get from him when his corona was up was floating hair.
”Yeah. It’s safe.” Ion approached the sand and stuck his hand in, digging around for a second before pulling out a fulgurite. Fossilized lightning. A piece of glass made from the sand as it was superheated by the lightning. The glass followed the shape that the lightning had taken though the sand. Ion looked at it a moment before handing it to Tori. ”With the sand in the air I can control the shape better. It isn’t being grounded out immediately by the Earth.”
Excellent! Tory was picking up what Ion was putting down. So she followed Ion to the volleyball court and lifted a nice chunk of sand for Ion. Ion, who had spent the last few minutes letting his power run, was ready to unleash it.
”Okay… Once you see the arcs, don’t get too close. I can only control this a little.” Ion said then after a moment the corona shifted to full electrical breakdown. Arcs of electricity flowed off Ion like a Tesla coil. They hit the ground, arced up and around to connect to other arcs. They went everywhere. He stood on the far side of the sand to keep Tori as far as possible as he got his hand a few inches away from the sand.
”Might want to close your eyes.” Ion said before he channeled his power into a single bolt of energy with his maximum amount of current. High enough to cut steel and upwards of 100 million volts. The short distance kept the sound down as there wasn’t as much of a vacuum created by the single bolt of electricity traveling like a mini lightning bolt. ”Okay. Now there should be something cool inside the sand.”
The arcing electricity faded and the corona returned over the next few seconds as Ion held his hand over the ground and drained himself of charge.
It was always fun when someone brought a new player to the poker game. Lenna had brought the fresh meat that night and the kid had been fleeced. Martin had done okay. Lenna and Ion had played okay at best, Lenna more so than Ion. Martin had thought he was on a roll and then right before Ion flipped the script on the poor kid, Lenna dropped him like a sack of last months potatoes.
The kid went from top dog to sent to a farm upstate in one hand. It was fantastic to see. Would have been better if Ion had done it himself, but game recognize game. Now with one less player, Ion was dealing.
”...Then I put about a million volts into it and bam! Like magic, door opened.” Ion was saying as he dealt out cards. ”I heard the danger room access panel got rebuilt after that. Trick still works here though. Who would have guessed there was hidden storage in the middle of the hedge maze.”
Ion looked at his hand, keeping his face a perfect poker face. He had read up on himself. Turns out poker and hustling pool had been how he covered the bills in law school. He wasn’t good enough yet to clean up at any bar in the city, but he wasn’t bad. More practice as he made his way through his undergrad and he would be a force to be reckoned with.
”Alright, Lenna. You're under the gun.” Ion said to Lenna. She was up first to bet. Ion smiled. Yes, starting these games had been a great decision.
Tori had a point. Flying around NYC would turn a lot of heads and while mutants shouldn’t have to hide their powers, it made a lot of sense to keep some cards close to your chest. Hold a few surprises back for when you need them.
”Ah, well that makes sense. Lots of people love to hate what they do not understand. And many will not even try.” Ion said, his power continuing the fire away.
Ion wasn’t building up much charge so the corona was all that was there, but he could feel his power opening up. The power allowing more current to be pushed out. So when Tori asked for requests for what was next, Ion grinned. He had an idea.
”I have an idea. Follow me.” Ion waved and turned to jog toward the hedge maze. ”There’s a volleyball court this way. With a sand court.” Ion was bearing his teeth in excitement thinking about his plan. ”Sand is just little granules of glass. Heat them up and they melt together. Hit them with lightning and you create fulgurites. Fossilized lightning— Oh, it's this way. I bet, if you shape the sand in the air I can create custom glass sculptures.”
While Tori was producing her phone to do the math, Ion quickly did it in his head. ~150+136=300-14. So together they were about 286 pounds. He didn’t feel like being a showoff so he let Tori quickly work it out. Having grown up in the days of ‘you won’t always have a calculator in your pocket’ had left an impact. At least on quick math like addition and subtraction.
”Holding on.” Ion said when he was ready. Well, as ready as he would ever be for flying on a plot of dirt.
Then they were off. The initial feeling of Ion’s stomach dropping had him feeling like he had boarded a roller coaster. The excitement of flying through the air had Ion’s power turning on. To onlookers they were like a purple glowing mass atop flying earth. ”This is amazing!” Ion shouted.
When they finally landed, Ion stepped off onto the dirt and found his sea legs again. He then looked to Tori, his power still surrounding him in a corona of St. Elmo’s fire. ”That was fantastic. How do you not do that every day? Just… Everywhere!” Ion said wishing he could fly. Sure his power was cool, allowing him to burn through metal, but flying was just a level of freedom he wished he could have. ”I would if I could. Forget having an electric car… I would take to the skies to get everywhere.”
Ion rubbed his hands together, exploring a power always tickled that sense of discovery that felt so rare in modern times. Bonus that it might mean flying! ”Epic!” Ion said, then when directed by Tori, he stepped onto the ground with her. At any other mansion in any other city it would probably just look like two teens randomly standing in the dirt. Maybe about to get themselves a little dirty. At that particular mansion—Nothing would be surprising, even if the round opened up and they were on the back of a jet or swallowed into the ground.
”About one-fifty or so… Haven’t weighed myself in a while.” It was oddly dissonant, standing on dirt and expecting to fly. ”So… Just stand here? Grab the ground, you?” Ion asked, looking from the ground to Tori.
