The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

Vanessa was cautious not to overstep her bounds with the very pretty girl with wings. Agnes was struggling with her lost past experiences, and to a degree, Nessa could understand. At the same time, Nessa could not help but be impressed by someone who clearly had talent of that caliber in her. Meanwhile, she was making dick jokes on the internet.
Okay, maybe she was a little harder on herself than necessary. She was an entertainer and apparently carried a degree of online influence. People looked up to her in groups that, a few weeks ago, Nessa was convinced she was not out as yet.
Contemplating the future was heavy, but Agnes lightened the mood with her ‘just shoot me’ gesture. And of course, when in doubt, make a list. Vanessa chuckled. ”You do seem like quite the advocate. I’ll be sure to list out the pros of being a gay trans gaming icon against the cons of how fucking terrifying that sounds.”
The laughter continued until Nessa awkwardly stopped laughing, realizing how she just outed herself. She felt so comfortable, and she was getting used to being her true self. That said, she was not intending to come out as gay, much less trans, to the cute girl she was on a walk with.
And that was why, as they walked past a small gap in the trees that seemingly led to water, Nessa nervously blurted out, ”Pond. We found a pond.” She winced, because dear fucking word, how was she so bad at everything? And yet, she committed and passed into the small clearing with a tiny, quaint pond.

Dealing with the same issues, Nessa felt like Agnes’s opinions mattered. Knowing the blue-eyed girl vouched for the Mansion assured Nessa the right decision was made. ”Thanks. I wasn’t sure at first, really. I wasn’t out as a mutant before I woke up. Apparently, I’m… like, really out now. So I’m getting used to being with other mutants.”
The private nature reserve behind the Mansion was serene. The sounds of nature kept Nessa at ease as she and Agnes caught up on each other’s journeys.
After finding out she was a semi-famous internet personality, Nessa was cautious about bringing it up. It felt like bragging. It felt significantly less like bragging when Agnes was a violinist in the New York Philharmonic. ”Are you kidding? That’s insane! So cool!” Realizing she was being a little too enthusiastic with something Agnes was clearly disappointed by, she awkwardly backtracked to an explanation. ”I mean, the ending sucks, but who knows what happened to that Agnes’s life? Could have been anything. At least you know you have that kind of amazing talent in you.”
The coin was flipped to Nessa, which was fair. It also meant those concerns about bragging were coming back. ”Let’s turn Superstar all the way down to ‘internet famous gaming personality’ and you’ve nailed it. Can’t confirm or deny the femme fatale thing, though. Gotta keep some mystery,” she joked, hoping that sounded as cool as she hoped it did. ”The production company I was with is willing to take me back. I’ll probably go back. It’s just… I guess it’s weird feeling like I have to live up to expectations set by a woman I didn’t know who ran around getting sorta famous with my name.”
Clearly, Agnes was joking, because Vanessa lacked the kind of casual confidence required to go on a date and make out with some rando she barely knew. ”Excuse you, I only make out with full harmful intent, and only after I at least know the person for a week or two. You know, so I don’t get axe murdered. Or sent feet pics.” There was a long list of deal-breakers, so she would leave it at those two.
After mentioning Miss Grey, Nessa moved forward and almost did not notice she was leaving Agnes behind until she heard her friend’s quick footsteps rejoining her. When she got back in line, she asked for clarification, which was surprising. Agnes was not going to judge her for this, would she? ”Oh. Well, Booker didn’t get into details, but I’m pretty sure he would have told me if I got married. So ex-girlfriend. Apparently it ended messily, which is weird since none of that happened to me, really.” And honestly, she was glad for that turn of events. It would make the Mansion an awkward place for her otherwise, like moving in with Chloe or Shelby.
Vanessa took the first steps into one of the hot tubs, letting her body ease into the sudden shift in temperature as it slow-cooked her calves, then knees, then thighs. She turned back to Agnes when the insect girl dropped a surprising tidbit of information. ”No way!” She laughed. ”This must be, like, hella awkward for her, then.” In fact, sneaking a glance, Nessa did notice the redhead making a cursory look in their direction. How many exes could she have that this would happen to her twice?
Except… Nessa did know about one of Becca’s exes. ”Huh. So… Book kinda mentioned that she cheated on me with her ex-girlfriend. You don’t think?” She let the question linger, catching Agnes’s eyes if they were available, before shaking her head. ”Not that it matters. Just a crazy coincidence, either way, you know?” Chuckling nervously, she slipped into the water, submerging herself up to her shoulders.

It threw Vanessa off that Shay even knew about her powers. No one knew about her powers. Was she really good friends with Shay? Was she telling good friends about her powers? Or was there another reason? Her anxiety flared, but she clutched her phone tightly to keep it under control.
A quick look into Shay's eyes revealed a jumble of nervous thoughts, but they sounded genuine. She was avoidant so she did not linger, still worried about someone knowing about her power. "Okay," she muttered, getting back to her feet. She needed to get some answers and a sense of familiarity. She already fired off a text. "Thank you, I just... I need my brother. If you can get me to Booker... that'd make you the best."
Shay's knowledge made her nervous, but Shay was willing to help her, and maybe with that help, she could get to the bottom of this and understand what, where, and who she was.

Making a list seemed unnecessary to Vanessa because realistically, her options were clear. She had her dream job waiting for her. Gian let her know she was welcome back to The POW Block Party when she was ready. It was an easy choice, or it would be if it did not give Nessa a boatload of anxiety.
It was easier to wander around the Mansion and the grounds nearby. She was not in front of thousands of people here; just a cute girl with wings. A queer girl, evidently, based on the date she missed out on. That knowledge tied a little knot in Nessa’s stomach. ”That’s a bummer, really. I have two exes but I was focusing on… my own things. Self-betterment.” Hormones. Getting comfortable in her skin. Chloe helped Nessa figure herself out, but things ended normally and Nessa wanted to get comfortable as a girl before bringing a new girl into her life. ”But yeah, normal life, woke up in a convention hall bathroom. I feel that.”
The struggle to live in a world that had moved on from them was worth taking time to understand. Walking together could help them, or could at least be an escape from the existential crisis. They met each other’s eyes and Nessa may have checked into what was on Agnes’s mind. Agnes knew she was a mutant, given where they met; at that point, it was kind of on her to not ask about the mutation yet.
”Let’s go. I appreciate the company,” she admitted, falling in stride with Agnes at her side. ”So what are some of the plans on your list? Have you been told what you did the first time?” Doing something new was always an option, but it made sense to at least consider what they did the first time before their resets.
Teasing her future pseudo-ex helped boost Nessa's confidence, mostly because of how Miss Grey handled it. She did not argue, and she was apologetic, but she was not pathetic about it. It made poking fun at her fun without making Nessa feel like a bully. She was, after all, not the cheater of the two, so she was just earning a little catharsis for the Nessa who was gone now.
Present Nessa could focus on having a nice night with her new friend who had amazing taste in swimwear that accented her unique mutation. (And other things that were gosh, just so worth accenting.) Nessa respected Agnes for being a physical mutant, unable to hide but unafraid to go out into the world. That was a reminder for Nessa not to slink back into her own mutant closet.
Agnes made a joke that Nessa had to stop sipping her drink for so she did not choke on it. She was definitely doing this on purpose, or so Nessa assumed before noticing Agnes's cheeks pinkening along with her own. The wing flutter was another tell, she was starting to notice. "S-seriously. It's like they should have mentioned it was a hot tub party or something. It's so hot, you're already turning pink," she pointed out hypocritically.
Now that Agnes was by her side, they had to decide on their plans. The idea of bidding on dates, if that was even a thing here, was laughable. "Yeah, I don't think I've got the confidence to burden someone with a date just because I shelled out money. Besides, that's for the people with money. I think most of old me's funds are still being sorted out with the bank."
Nessa was interested in Haven's efforts, but there was no rush and she doubted she would learn much from the auctions. Instead, she looped her arm around her friend's elbow and moved toward the hot tubs. "I say we have a nice soak and enjoy some party conversation. Though... let's not go with Miss Grey's tub, if possible. She's nice, but she's also kind of my ex?" She chuckled at the absurdity as she slipped into the hot bubbling of an empty tub. "Besides, we should be branching out to people not from the Mansion, right?" Except each other, obviously. That did not count.

Agnes had a good point; if you were going to pick an alias, you would want to pick something believable, or at least fashionable. When Nessa picked her name, she put days of time into the selection, considering fictional characters and searching for name meanings. Ultimately, she settled on a name with no meaning she just happened to like. Some poet had a thing for a girl named Esther whose last name started with Van. It was a silly fact, but she liked that her name was made by a poet to pine after some girl. Not enough of a reason to name herself Esther, but definitely a nifty Vanessa fact.
The insect girl started to move away, but even she was interested in this shared experience they were dancing around. She all but confirmed that they were both dealing with the same de-aged experience. That made Nessa smile, surprised at the relief she felt actually talking to someone else in the same boat. There were others at the Mansion in her position, but Agnes was the one she stumbled into. "Well, nice to relate, right?"
It was a little late for the welcome wagon, but Nessa was not going to turn down a warm welcome from Agnes. She asked about Nessa's process and whether or not she had a list she was jotting ideas down in. The notion made Nessa chuckle. "I'm not actually the list-making type. I've been alternating between confronting my own existence in bed at night and watching videos of older me, which is its own kind of existential crisis." Sure, it was cool that she got hotter, but really, how did you live up to your own online legacy?
Maybe that was why she was holding off on her return to The POW Block Party. "Today, I guess I'm giving a cliche soul-searching walk a try." This conversation made her realize that was what this was. Looking at the pretty black-haired girl, Nessa took a chance. "Any chance you want to join me? Or should I leave you with your all-important notebook I suspect is filled with lists?"

Vanessa was panicking. Shay was also panicking. Somehow, that made the young trans girl trust the cosplayer a little more. If someone was doing something nefarious to her, they would be more put together and confident about what to do next. Trying to hold herself together despite not knowing what was going on? That sounded like someone Nessa would have in her life.
That was great, because the idea that it was Twenty-Twenty was impossible, and it was easily enough to break her brain. "It's... no way. Like. Twenty-Twenty, and I was..." Nessa counted on her fingers, because age math always eluded her. "Fuck, I guess twenty-seven or twenty-eight? This... holy hell, this doesn't feel real." How was she supposed to deal with this news?
Thankfully, there was one familiar name in her phone that Nessa gravitated to, hoping even in Twenty-Twenty she had the kind of brother she could run to in a crisis. "Okay. Thank you for finding me. I... I do appreciate it. But I think... I need to talk to my brother." Assuming he was still in her life in Twenty-Twenty. "You seem nice, Shay. Do you think, maybe, you can help me get to my brother?" Realizing she was in a strange place with nothing to hang onto, even an anxious girl like Nessa was happy to take a chance to trust the one person who was here for her.

Booker was an incredibly loyal brother, so Nessa was sure he would have been there for her through a breakup. If she was cheated on, he would taker her side and condemn her ex’s actions. She would take that grain of salt with the points he made, possibly for the benefit of the woman she was.
”Sounds like she had plenty of trouble. Definitely not going to do that again.” She looked up from her snacks and figured she should add, ”Not that I was planning to. I figure I should learn at least one lesson from older me.” Nessa was not above the scandal of flirting with a teacher, but there were certainly teachers who were not well-known cheaters.
So the Mansion had its complications, but it sounded like a logical place to go for the time being. She needed to get comfortable in this near-future and she needed to feel safe as a mutant with other mutants. ”Well, it sounds like I have some important calls to make. The Mansion… Gina.” That last one was not a call she looked forward to, but it had to happen. She would start moving forward, and she had to do that as herself and not the woman she was or would have become.
Sipping her soda, Nessa set her cup down and wrapped her brother up in a tight hug. ”Thank you, Booker. When I started to figure out what happened, the best news I could cling to was that you were still in my life.” She rubbed her face against his sleeve to deal with the water dotting the corners of her eyes. ”This feels more doable knowing you’re a phone call away. On my awesome new phone. Because seriously, phones are fucking awesome now.”
There were definitely somebenefits to being in the future.

Despite Nessa’s interest, Agnes selfishly hid away her personal journal behind her back. It was absolutely her right and it was Vanessa’s right to pout. ”I just met you and you’re withholding vampire goodness from me.” She tisked her tongue a few times. ”Not off to a great start, Agnes. If that is YOUR real name,” she retorted teasingly.
Stubbornness aside, Agnes had what she came for and could return to her lofty perch if she wanted. Despite that, she turned the lens of the conversation around on Vanessa. Fair was fair. ”Newish. Got here a week or two. The Mansion seemed like a good place to figure out where I go from here.” She did not foresee the Mansion as a permanent solution, but it was a good place to get her feet under her as a mutant and a woman displaced in time.
Which Nessa debated and ultimately decided was harmless to share. It was not like the de-aging problem was a secret, right? ”I’m in this sort of weird position. I have a life I can jump back into, but it doesn’t feel like my life. It’s like… an older, better me’s life. Just a lot to process, ya know?”
How exactly did she get here? Oh, right; Vanessa Bookman was bad at saying no to cute girls. And one of her new best friends in this bizarre, time-displaced world was a cute girl.
To be fair, Vanessa was the one who brought the party up. The event sounded worth looking into. Yes, sure, she was part of the group it was raising awareness and support for, which was always nice, but she was more so curious about Haven. She looked them up, did research, and noticed their efforts in humanitarian works and activism. There was limited public information and there seemed to be strong business associations with Haven, but she hoped they were not just the smiling face of some corrupt corporations.
After talking about Haven and the event for the better part of a day, Agnes was the one to suggest they just do the obvious: attend the party. Nessa… was not all too sure about that idea. Hot tubs and pools were a great place for anxiety. Still, Agnes was convincing.
Her blatant swimsuit modeling did not hurt her cause.
And so, they were at Haven and Nessa was nervously entering the party in a green bikini and swim skirt she ordered from Nile Prime two days prior. She was glad it fit, and it seemed to offer the coverage she was hoping for, but she still felt exposed. Thankfully, she had Agnes close by for support, and she had even called in additional reluctant support in Shay, who was supposedly going to meet them there.
Miss Grey was walking by from the bar, which did offer Nessa an opportunity to ease her nerves by being snarky. ”Miss Grey, think you can sneak me a wine? Since, you know, the cheating.”
The exasperated redheaded teacher rolled her eyes. ”At some point I’m assuming you’ll let that go,” she replied, easing herself into the waters of a nearby hot tub. ”Also… maybe.”
Smug in her victory, Nessa turned back to Agnes as she entered the room. ”Alright, so I guess this is us actually trying to get out into the Twenty-Twenty world.” At least they could do that as a team, because a room of strangers was intimidating. ”Since I blame you for getting me out of the Mansion, I’ll follow your lead. Aggie?” The bars, the tubs, the auctions; at least they had options, and at least Nessa brought someone to make the choice for her.

The spike in anxiety kept stabbing through her chest. The more she took in the world around her, the more everything felt wrong. She wanted to be suspicious of this cosplayer because she was a stranger, but… well, she knew Nessa. That was the only tether she had to this place and she was desperate.
What was the last thing Nessa remembered? ”I mean… I vaguely remember going to sleep last night. I don’t think I went out,” she muttered. ”Winnie? Is my roommate Winnie here? She always jokes about getting so drunk something like this would happen, but... “ Well, who thought those things would actually happen in real life?
Nessa dug around her purse, which was new. Everything in it looked new. Even her phone was unfamiliar and holy hell, it was really nice. What model was this? She opened the lock, glad the pattern was the same one she always used. As she scrolled through contacts, she looked back up at the woman looking at her with concern. ”Um… I don’t mean to sound rude. It’s something I do a lot. But… what’s your name, Miss? And… well, how do you know me?” She shuddered, thinking of worst-case scenarios in her head. ”Having someone find me in a bathroom and start calling my name raises flags, you know?”

As a rule, Vanessa disapproved of cheaters. Cheating on her was a death sentence for a relationship no matter how hot or interesting a girl could be. Finding out Vanessa was cheated on in her future that would now presumably never happen was disappointing. Oddly, it was not the kind of anger or sadness she thought she would feel.
”It’s weird. I totally believe that I was cheated on, but… I guess it feels like someone I’ve heard of got cheated on.” Like a vlogger or a coworker from another department. ”I sympathize. But it happened to someone else.”
There was no emotional attachment to the situation, but Nessa was only ready to be so mature. ”What about the teacher? Did she learn a lesson? Or is she just a total bitch?” Nessa was not going to pretend all cheating was equal, though it was all unforgivable. She was curious if she would have dated the kind of girl to heartlessly betray someone without remorse. She hoped not.
”I need to know the right amount of sass to give this lady, and remorseful screwups get slightly kinder treatment than unfaithful succubi.” The difference between teasing and cold reminders of her flaws as a person.

Vanessa was accustomed to shoving her whole metaphorical foot in her mouth on a good day, and talking to cute cis girls did little to save her from herself. Girls were just so gosh damn pretty, and talking to them was distracting because she was mentally playing the game of whether she was more attracted to her or whether she wanted to look like her.
This girl was in the both camp, she decided.
Fortunately, Agnes chose to show mercy on the thoughtless comment. Nessa was so thankful, she barely noticed she had called this stranger pretty. Skipping past that comment let Nessa change the pace of things by antagonizing in her own light-hearted way.
To Agnes’s credit, she did not grumpily demand her pencil. The insect girl even chose to play along. ”It is,” she rebutted when she felt Agnes’s accusatory gaze, before realizing she had to technically clarify, ”Well, Vanessa. Both count.”
Apparently, Agnes was trying to decide her own faith with a notebook. Quite an undertaking, particularly if she was getting distracted with vampiress doodles. She had to grin at that; how could she ignore that?
Handing the pencil over with a heavy sigh, Vanessa shrugged her shoulders. ”Shame I’m not then,” she answered without thinking. And then noticing that sounded suspiciously like flirting. ”Because then you could just solve all my big existential questions with your notebook. Heaven knows I’ve got enough these days. Or at least I’d possibly get to sneak a peek at what I’m sure is some wholesome, well-drawn vampires.” If only her notebook had been the thing to drop. Not that Nessa would have snooped, but… well, if it had fallen open, no one would have blamed her for a peek.

The floating girl finally descended down to the ground, landing delicately on her feet and allowing her wings to rest. Now that she was not bobbing up and down slightly in the air and stood closer, Nessa could really see her eyes.
Those guys were such a beautiful crystal blue. Vanessa was just getting used to having blue eyes of her own, but hers were more of an electric blue. This girl's eyes were somehow more pure.
Maybe it was unfair to sneak a peek, but you had to meet someone's eyes when you were talking, and Vanessa couldn't shut off her power to ignore the thoughts that this girl was surprised by her own confidence and thought Vanessa was cute.
Vanessa clung to that morale boost when Agnes introduced herself. "They still name people Agnes?" Okay, maybe the confidence to speak without thinking was not something Vanessa needed. "Which was incredibly fucking rude of me to say. It's just, I mean, you're a lot prettier than your name." Smooth.
She focused back on the pencil and the name indeed marked on it. "Well, if I'm going to hand over a tool of such power, can you at least tell me what makes it so important? The fate of the universe is in the balance, and I'm part of the universe. I'm also Nessa, by the way," she thought to add at the end somehow.
