The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

Nate was very obviously trying his best not to let himself be riled up by her comments, which she sort of respected, in a way. He was sticking to his guns and being loyal to his friends, despite the fact that they (she) did not deserve it. Well, he would go down with that sinking ship. No white flag for him.
What had initially drawn the two of them together was the fact that they could push each other farther than the average pair and still find that the other would come back swinging. They were a rare pairing that could manage to bounce back witty comments for hours on end. That fact really hadn't changed in the time that they were away.
Her comment about his past didn't go over all that well, which was to be expected. He'd had a rough go of things, even if it was mostly his fault. It wasn't really Natalie's place to judge, but she still did. If he was going to bring himself into a relationship with her child, then she did have a bit of a right to get nosey with that sort of thing.
"Well, it's a good thing that you didn't have those things, huh? You might have ended up with even more bimbos hanging off of you," she replied sharply. It was partly just a jab, and partly truthful. Natalie wasn't entirely fond of all the women he seemed to parade around, nearly bringing them into Norah's life. She was very careful about who she introduced to her (and therefore who she spent the most time with), and she expected the same from Nate. Eventually, they were all going to come back to haunt him.
>>”Besides, from what I remember, you weren’t always so averse to biting.”
"Oh good, you remembered the one thing I didn't have to fake," Natalie responded dryly. If he was going to go there, then she was going to go there, too. It seemed that nothing was off limits. He had been right, though. She couldn't believe that he even remembered that. She'd even forgotten about it.
As the fight went on, Natalie began to settle. As terrifying as it had been for her to have to sit through the ordeal, things were looking up. No longer did she feel like she or anyone else might be in danger; instead, she was focusing on watching the Ranger.
She’d stepped away from the main area of the fight, circling the room like a referee around a wrestling ring. That’s what it was, really, but the fight was not something that was happening for the right to hold a trophy or a belt. It was happening because there was far too much testosterone flowing through the veins of one Mister James Harvey.
Blow after blow, Ranger never seemed to have a problem coming out on top. Natalie supposed that was what happened when you hired the best. For all of Devon’s mistakes letting in Noel, she was glad that he had the sense to pin Michael down. Even if he was just technically a contractor.
>>"This could've gone peacefully Mr. Harvey. Y' chose this course."
Natalie pursed her lips. What happened next was up to her; she was running the show in that room. She ignored each cry of pain that the gorilla let out as her mind whirled. She was making a decision, but she wasn’t about to make it lightly.
The gorilla had just attacked them and they had caught it on camera. If they used the footage right, then they could completely destroy his life, or even send him to jail. There were plenty of possibilities.
Still, for all of Natalie’s faults, she was not merciless. She did understand that Harvey was a man pushed to the edge, caught in a trap by his own actions. He’d lost it, but he was still a person. However much like a gorilla he happened to look at that moment. Plus, things had gone down exactly as she’d wanted them to, so he deserved a little bit of a reward for playing his part.
”Shift back,” Natalie instructed. Harvey relented and did so, sinking several feet as he lost some of his enormous size. He clearly understood the situation that he was in. There was no way for him to get out of it.
She nodded once, noting the fact that his arms were less twisted since he’d lost some of his height. She then nodded to Michael, silently instructing him to hold him tighter. Stepping closer, she bent her knees so that she was at eye level with the man-who-was-a-gorilla. ”Now. We have all that on tape. I’d like you to take a minute to think about how you want this to play out, or else my friend and I here will have to start discussing how we want it to be released.”
Natalie watched Nate with a cool expression as he sipped his scotch. Yes, she had purposely pushed him, pushed the topic. It was unnecessary, but she had done it. Sure, it would start the conversation down a path of passive-aggressive comments, and possibly even actual shouting, but she wasn’t one for small talk. They weren’t small people, after all.
And neither was Noel. Even the thought of her made Natalie’s jaw clench. She was just… Noel. Not only that, but she seemed to be everyone’s darling at Haven.
>>”I gave her a healthy dose of my past once, and she kept on treating me like a friend. It’s amazing how judgmental can be when it comes to people with questionable pasts,”
Natalie snorted loudly.
That had obviously been a dig at her and her tendency to be judgemental. Yes, the woman knew that she could come across in certain lights to people, but she didn’t particularly care. She had to keep her mouth shut when working with clients, so she sure as hell wasn’t going to force herself to do the same thing in her personal life. No, if there were people that bothered her, then she wasn’t going to invite them into her life on her own time.
Unfortunately, she had invited Nate in. With Nate, apparently, came twenty bimbos that Natalie now had to deal with.
“Well maybe if your past wasn’t so checkered then you wouldn’t have to dig so far into the trash for a friend,” Natalie pointed out, blinking her heavy-lidded eyes pointedly. She was quick to judge, but there was lots of judging that needed to be done around Haven. They let in far too much riff-raff for her tastes.
The woman sipped her wine and shook her head haughtily as she made herself more comfortable on the couch. ”I hope they’re still keeping her on a leash. Wouldn’t want her biting anyone else.”

Devon had left, leaving Nate and Natalie all alone in the little LIE. She was still in her initial position in that comfortable chair, having picked up the case file she’d been reading before. It was interesting enough, and it was a suitable reason not to have to talk to Nate. Things were… strange between them without the topic of Norah.
What did she really have to say to him? They’d slept together years ago, produced a child, and wound up in each other’s lives once again. They weren’t really friends, and they disagreed on so many topics. Working with him in the IE had revealed that to her.
Still, there was something about him. It made her realize what she had seen in him in the first place. Sure, she had been young (and not all that picky about romantic partners) back then, but those grey-blue eyes and con man charm were two things that kept him endearing to her.
Natalie sipped her wine and looked up at the man. It was strange; she wanted to prove him wrong on so many things, but a small, buried part of her just wanted to shove him down on that couch. God, her mind was a disaster.
She needed to get past her inhibitions, though, whatever they were. They needed to find common ground of their own, even if it was just screaming or discussing their daughter. The silence just would not do.
Almost violently, she suddenly slammed the case file shut and leaned forward in her seat. With piercing blue eyes, she stared Nate down.
”So what on earth do you see in Noel?” she asked, starting the conversation off with something that had been irking her for the entirety of that conversation. Noel was horrible, but for some reason, Nate felt the need to defend her around every turn. It was infuriating. She picked up her wine glass from the table next to her and took a sip, acting as if she hadn't just brought up the sensitive topic of one of his best friends.
In the very least, the spider was compliant. Like a dog, it stayed when told, ignoring the beaconing call of Norah. That was the singular point in his favour. Unfortunately, it was still stacked against a million bad ones. There was no way that he could win out against that.
Natalie breathed in deeply and looked at Norah, gearing up to tell her to go back into the room and wait a while longer. However, Nate took on the job for her. Their daughter sighed, but listened. She looked disappointed, but she did in fact listen. Despite her anger, Natalie was glad that she didn't have to be the bad guy once again.
She was a good mom. Even in her own head, she wasn't going to deny that fact. She'd put in the time and work, and she planned to reap the benefits, not let Nate swoop in and take all the credit. No matter how charming he thought he was.
Still, Nate was being selfless, helpful, and giving. Despite the fact that he'd caused the situation (all the situations, really), he was doing a good job of diffusing it, and Natalie was finding that she was having a tough time staying angry with him or the disgusting spider.
Maybe, just maybe, if it would listen to instruction, it wouldn't be all that bad.
Natalie lowered her brow and stared at Nate for a good minute. "Norah, you can come out now. If 'Parker' feels up to playing, then you can play with him." Dammit, she wasn't going to stop her daughter from having fun and feeling comfortable in a place that would need to start feeling like a second home.
Norah burst out excitedly, clearly waiting for her mother to give her some kind of cue at any moment. She raced toward Parker and wrapped her arms around him. Natalie had to look away.
"Just don't make me look at it," she warned Nate. "Now, do you have coffee?"
While her shoe had made its way back to her foot, Natalie’s finger had taken the place of pointing at Nate. Sure, it wasn’t as pointy or dangerous, but it would still be able to do some damage. It would just be damage of a different kind.
She fumed at the father of her child as she reentered the room. ”How could you do that without telling me? Now’s she’s attached and I have to be the bad guy here. You can’t just waltz into her life and be the cool dad with crazy pets who lets her do whatever she- EIEE!”
Natalie jumped a good foot backward as she spotted the spider that had rejoined them and was trying (and failing) to hide behind Nate. She backed up until she’d reached a wall, at which point, she held herself against it, trying to make sure that she didn’t have any other angles unwatched. Sure, there was only one of it, but it moved with surprising speed.
>>”All I’m saying is maybe you’re jumping the gun here?”
Natalie let her eyes close slowly as she tried to compose herself. Her bottom jaw slid forward slightly, and she licked her lips as she formulated her argument. Sure, she was terrified beyond all logic, but that didn’t mean she wasn’t ready for a fight.
”I’m jumping the gun on making decisions while raising my daughter? Nathaniel, you just came into her life. I’ve raised her for six years. Six years of rules, six years of tears, six years of everything else that comes with being a parent, good or bad. Those six years include a long battle of trying to get her to be okay with not having a pet, and you want to come in here with that thing, get her hopes up, and tell me that I’m jumping the gun?”
Her voice and eyes were steely, flickering between Nate and the spider at his feet. ”You will sit yourself down and rethink that last statement for a while, while I try to figure out what to do with all of this.” A breath came out through her teeth as she tried to think about how she could keep the spider out of both of their lives and let Norah down easily. Why couldn’t it have just been a cat? She would’ve been okay with a cat.
”Mommy? Can I come in now?” Norah’s voice came softly from around the corner. She was peeking her head out of the room that Natalie had placed her in and was wiggling her finger at Parker.
In the very least, Nate was supporting her argument that they were out of their depth. He had opposed her on the whole Noel thing, which while she understood his loyalty, was completely unfounded and had irked her. Yes, it was good to have an opposing opinion at all times, but not when the opposing opinion was absolutely and completely biased.
"We work from the background until we have a better idea of what we're looking at," Natalie agreed. There was absolutely no need to jump the gun when they had plenty of time figure things out. That was, at least, assuming that the weird happenings weren’t about to issue in something much worse…
Of course Nate had a female reporter friend. It seemed to be that he had endless piles of female friends that he was going to parade in front of her daughter. That was not to say that Natalie was jealous or had any kind of problem with it, of course. Her face remained impassive as she nodded with the points that he made.
>>“And since you volunteered… Think you could get a training regimen organized? I’m sure Ranger and his troop could be leveraged. You set up some goals with him for everyone and then can report with us.”
”I volunteered, did I?” Natalie scoffed. She did not remember volunteering to do a thing like that. She was a high-up lawyer who already worked insane hours, and adding IE meetings and time for Norah and Nate to interact was already a lot. Her plate was full; no, it was overflowing, and he still wanted her to take on more. ”I’d like to see that in writing,” she muttered under her breath and closed the file on her lap.
”I will do the training,” she began, having already settled into the idea despite her opposition, ”on the condition that it will have to work around my schedule, not anyone else’s. I have commitments that need to be kept.” Norah would not suffer because of Natalie’s inability to say no to other things that ate her time.
Natalie then leaned back in her chair and motioned for Devon to continue down whatever rabbit hole he had on the docket next.
Natalie stayed completely still as she waited for her fate to be sealed. The hand was lunging for her throat, aimed right at her trachea. She could almost feel it be forced closed on her, the bones giving under the pressure.
Of course, a small part of her knew rationally that it would never happen. That was, after all, why she'd brought Michael. As long as he was there, she had nothing to fear; she would leave unharmed. The meeting would go as planned.
That did not, however, stop her heart from stopping in her chest. Nor did it stop her from freezing in place as the table flipped up in front of her. She'd seen tables flip before, but not like that. The conference table was made with thick material and probably weighed several hundred pounds. The Ranger had lifted it like he was flipping a piece of cardboard.
While the commotion was going on around her, Natalie stayed glued to her seat, her posture and expression unchanged. To anyone who happened to be looking into the scene, she would appear to be either having trouble processing or having some sort of stroke. Neither was the case; she was just terrified and not about to get involved.
Harvey was being pressed into the wall by Hunter, who seemed to be having no trouble holding up the table like a teacup. Mutations were truly amazing at times.
Then, they would go and surprise a woman with something the ability to shift into a gorilla. Natalie stood from her chair and blinked as the beast charged at her with a bloodthirsty look in his eyes. For she stayed where she was, holding her newfound ground. Again, she knew that she would be able to count on The Ranger to ensure that she made it out of that conference room alive. God, did she ever hate having to rely on someone for that, though.
The thrown chair and head driven into his knee were exactly the distractions that Natalie needed to be able to formulate some sort of plan on her own. She missed being able to fight from behind her case files, but she wasn't completely useless. She still had her powers.
While both men had their hands full, Natalie focused on the room around her. For Ranger, nothing would happen, but for Harvey, the room would disappear, and the walls would begin to close in. Claustrophobia; she'd heard it through the grapevine.
She just hoped that it would give Ranger an extra boost in the fight, not that he needed it.
They were all sitting in their comfortable little LIE. It was too perfect, really. While they weren't necessarily hiding, they weren't exactly talking about the weather (other than Devon's weather). If someone walked in, there would definitely be questions asked of the supposedly straight-and-narrow leaders of Haven.
Natalie took another sip of her wine and continued to flip through a case file, not bothering to look at Nate. Yes, they were being amicable, but that didn't mean that she was going to blindly support everything that he did. Especially his choices in people (and pets) to spend time with. She didn't know what he saw in Noel, but clearly, he saw something if he was willing to stick his neck out for her.
Devon also seemed to have faith in the memory mancer, for whatever reason. Natalie simply raised an eyebrow quickly and flipped a page a little louder than usual. Yes, she knew that it probably wasn't the cause of whatever was going on, but both men were very quick to jump to her defense, clearly not accounting for the fact that the woman had BITTEN HER and tried to steal her memories. Natalie was very much not okay with that fact.
"Alright, we dig into this a little deeper; see where it takes us. Maybe it's a mutant doing it? Someone really strong?" Natalie tried to think of one mutant whose power could even start to rival what was going on in New York City. She could think of none.
Natalie decided to get a little more formal in her approach to the meeting, so she lowered her wineglass and closed the file in front of her. "What's to say that we can even do anything about it if we find it, though? Most of our members are barely tactically trained. We might be looking at something completely out of our scope."

Every so often, Natalie let herself smile while working a case. Just a small one; hardly noticeable as it pulled at the corners of her mouth. This was one of those rare occasions. In truth, she wanted Harvey to lose it. It made things more interesting for her if he lost his cool and they could operate with her standing on a higher ground.
Plus, it gave Michael something to do other than sitting next to her silently.
Despite his track record, standing near a ready-to-explode Harvey did not scare her in the slightest. She knew that Michael wouldn't let him near her (she had seen his track record. And his arms), and if it came to the worst case scenario, she could make some kind of illusion. She wasn't sure what it would be, but she was pretty good at thinking on her feet.
"Settle down, boys," Natalie instructed, trying to keep herself from looking too smug. "If we get violent, I'm going to have to draw up even more paperwork," she tutted her tongue, "we wouldn't want that, would we?"
Mr. Harvey let out an aggravated breath and muttered something under his breath, but sat back down. He did not look impressed at all.
"Good. Now, let's talk dropping the-"
The next thing she knew, Mr. Harvey had launched himself across the meeting table, aiming a hand at her neck.
The greatest thing about high heels was that, when turned around, they could make a decent weapon to spear a freakishly large arachnid with. Natalie had removed her left shoe and was holding it out in front of her like a knife, her other arm wrapped protectively around her daughter. There was no way that she would let the thing get close to her or Norah.
The spider shuffled back, away from the two of them, but Natalie was not convinced. "It's dangerous, love. Don't let it fool you," she insisted. She'd never been one to sugar coat the world or pretend that she was anything more than she was.
Nate was trying to tell her that the spider was harmless. A giant spider. Harmless.
With wide, intense eyes, she turned around, her shoe still pointed out in front of her. Rather than the spider, it was aimed at Nate's throat. "Don't you dare," she hissed, her voice breaking ever so slightly. She was terrified. Absolutely terrified. "You brought our daughter to a place where there's a giant arachnid? I don't care if he has a name or not!"
The spider (she refused to call it by a name) had retreated from the room, finally leaving them alone. Carefully, with her shoe still out, Natalie led Norah into one of the other rooms, careful to go in the opposite direction from the thing. "Stay here, sweetheart. I'm just going to have a chat with your dad."
"Can't I play with Parker, though? He's cute!"
"We'll discuss this later." There would be no discussion. She was absolutely not playing with a giant spider.
With her daughter situated, Natalie reentered the main room, hellfire in her eyes. She didn't even bother to check the surroundings before she entered.
"She is," Natalie nodded. Sure, she was completely biased, but it was the truth. Norah was special. She was bright, and wonderful, and had the disposition of spun sugar. Some days, Natalie wasn't even sure whether she had really raised her or not. It seemed impossible that she of all people could have influenced something so pure.
They entered the Haven residence building and Norah skipped forward ahead of them. She pressed the 'up' button on the elevator, having no actual idea where they were going. When the doors opened, the young girl rushed ahead and raised her arm. Call it mother's intuition, or maybe just really good insight, but Natalie knew exactly what she was going to do. She ran forward in her heels and caught Norah's arm before she could press all the buttons on the wall, making the elevator stop at every floor.
"We don't do that, Norah. Let mi- let Nate press the button for the floor he's on," she told her. She'd slipped up and started to address Nate with the obligatory 'Mister' before realising that there was no need to do that anymore.
Norah pouted ever so slightly, but stepped back from the wall, allowing Nate to press the button. Soon enough, she had become distracted by her reflection in the elevator wall and completely forgot about the ordeal.
>>”Ever feel like there’s something you just can’t seem to remember?”
Rarely, but there had been a few instances. The most recent had been a run-in with a mutant client of hers who she was not particularly fond of. "Occasionally," she said simply, preferring not to go into detail about Noel. She knew if she did, she may have never stopped complaining.
They reached Nate's apartment, and Norah ran forward. Impressively, Nate took over the duty of telling her not to run. Sure, there didn't seem to be any immediate danger, but it was easier to slip and fall at six years old than people assumed. Norah obliged and then disappeared around the corner.
"Stay where we can see you, please!"
>>”I may have forgotten to mention… I have a pet.”
Natalie narrowed her eyes at him. She didn't particularly care for pets. They smelled, shed, and were generally just completely unnecessary. If Norah's new dad had a pet, then it might give her ideas. That, or something to hold over Natalie's head when she was older. For a second, she thought about asking how close he was to the pet.
That was until she saw it.
Natalie screamed bloody murder and tossed her purse at the beast that followed her daughter through the apartment. "Norah, get away from that thing," she hissed. She wanted to run away and never look back at the creature, but she couldn't let it get any closer to Norah. Against her instincts, she walked forward and grabbed the girl by the shoulders, trying to edge her away from whatever it was that had infested Nate's apartment.
