The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

The limousine rolled out of the city and into the countryside. The drive was relaxing and long. The build site was some miles outside of New York City, nestled quietly away from civilization, and already surrounded by a makeshift fence that would become a wall. The site itself looked more like an excavation, extending some three stories down. A good couple dozen workers currently moved about the site, pouring concrete, hammering, or whatever.
“Have a look Doctor. As I said, it isn’t much to look at yet, but…” She waved at the construction foreman and he came over. “Mr. Jameson, could you go get the blueprints please?”
The foreman jogged away from them and returned a couple minutes later with a roll of several layers of blueprints. He passed them off to Chandra and she in turn returned to the limousine to unroll them on its hood. “Come over here and have a look.”
”Thank you Doctor,” Chandra said with a pleasant smile. “Now, tell me what’s missing from them. Better to modify these plans now, while the building is only in its early stages, than to try and modify them once it is nearly complete. Don’t be bashful, or worry about harming my feelings, incase something in the plans is incorrect.”
She looked from Zane to the blueprints again. She knew that constructing a building would be cheaper if she did not have to modify it afterwards. Remodeling typically equaled additional funds she did not want to have to expend, even if she had enough to do so. Things were so much simpler in centuries past. She let out a small internal sigh, while maintaining her outward composure. “Don’t be shy Doctor, should we add in a small dormitory?”
Chandra nodded along with the suggestions Zane made. Presently she took out a small note pad and began scribbling notes, in French, of what he was saying. “Your office can be anywhere you want it Doctor. And as for security, we’ll be employing a private company; at least until we’ve employed and trained our own force, that is. So, a dormitory for an ‘on site’ staff would make sense, which is already prepared for,” she indicated on the second floor blueprints. “What about your research team? Should we have an on-call room for them as well? And what sort of materials are we talking about? I know you’ve mentioned the adamantium alloy, what other things though?”
She stared at the prints for a moment, then thought of something else. “I would prefer to have testing further down. Unless that would be a problem, I’ll leave the final decision up to you, but if something were to go wrong, I’d prefer if it weren’t close to the surface. Though space would not be a problem, as you can see… We’ve already planned for a fairly extensive underground facility, as well as a couple stories above ground as well. And everything will be reinforced, requiring the state of the art security systems. Passcodes, keycards, prints and retinal scans. That is one area that will not be skimped on. What other suggestions have you?”
”I am very serious about this endeavor Doctor. This is a very large investment for me, and I take all my investments very seriously,” Chandra stated, then flipped through a couple pages of the blueprints and pointed at an area oddly empty. “Would here do for your onsite apartment?”
He did not need to apply the sad puppy-dog eyes as she had had the plans drawn up intentionally with a blank area. She had figured he would want to either live onsite or have a significant presence there. He struck her as the type of person to be completely absorbed by his work, kind of like a younger her. She smiled at the thought, as he clearly looked to at least be old enough to be her father. “When you say programming, does that mean you need supercomputers or merely an extensive network? I can arrange for either, or both, but I need to know. The other ‘hardware’ can be acquired and I will put people to work on it right away. How much of what materials will you need for a second prototype?”
”Here Doctor,” she said with a smile. “It will take awhile to acquire the rarer materials, and certainly this facility will be closer to being completed once the rare stuff is in. Of course, that does not mean you cannot start on the design specs for a second prototype.”
She paused and watched him for a moment, wondering ever so slightly what was going on within his mind. He was obviously happy at the opportunities she was presenting to him, but she wondered what else. Though to be so front as to ask about such things directly might come across as rude. “However, to answer your question a little more directly, I would prefer a second prototype as soon as possible. And I want to be kept informed of your progress, okay?”
Chandra had spent the past month seeking out the needed pathways through the American government to legally supply Zane with what he needed. They seemed more than willing to supply the proper pathways, laced with lucrative taxes for themselves of course. She was willing to invest such precious pennies to speed things along though.
After paving the way for Zane to begin work she returned home to France, spending time wandering the rural bits she grew up in some seven hundred years ago. The hills and valleys still helped her to think, and were relatively safe. She could be alone with just her thoughts and ambitions. It was nice to travel her ‘ancient’ home without her two shadows following her. Mr. Gerard stayed near by, of course, as he had no family or close friends he desired to visit with. Joseph took the time off with grace, choosing to take a lengthy visit with his family.
The construction of the facility had gone as planned, if not even faster than planned. She had kept in contact with the contractor to make sure they were meeting or beating deadlines, while still making sure that they were not cutting corners in the same instance. The steady reports from Zane had also confirmed what the contractors were telling her. In due time she would return to the states, though for now she was content to sit peaceably beneath a tree and think… remember.
Chandra set foot in the newly christened “Global Enterprises” research and development facility. Zane had said he had nearly completed the second prototype and she wanted to be there for its final phases. She moved through the initial check points, swiping her card and applying her thumb print for the various scanners that required it. As she moved deeper into the facility she needed to do this less frequently. She directed Mr. Gerard and Joseph to wait in the upper break room as she descended towards the primary construction facility in the depths of the ground.
She stepped into the testing chamber, looking at the back of Zane as she approached, as well as the second prototype he stood before. The facility had turned out better than she could have hoped. She would certainly have to take a full tour later, though for now she just wanted to see if her money had been well spent thus far. “Doctor, is it ready?”
Chandra nodded along with what Zane was saying. Two versions made sense, in fact she was contemplating requesting that Zane begin designing several specific purpose models, though at that moment it struck her, maybe they could design a model that could be easily modified for whatever job necessary.
“Delightful Doctor,” she said with a small smile, she would bring up the idea with him later. She had other questions about this model first. “What is its power source? Does the laser draw off of that power source, or is it independent?”
She walked around the prototype while continuing to toss out questions. “What is the method of charging and can it do so in the field? And about the tracking computer… exact same as the original? Or has it been enhanced given that it is a ranged model? Also, is there anyway of expanding that firing arc? Forty five degrees seems a bit small, unless there are others around it to make for overlapping arcs.”
She paused long enough for him to answer her questions before posing one more about this particular model. “Is it ready for a live demonstration?”
”And the lasers wouldn’t detract from that twenty year life span?” She found that incredible as she walked after Zane. “A demonstration would be delightful Doctor.”
She was looking forward to seeing this new machine in action. In truth, she was looking forward to seeing either machine in action. She found the whole thing incredible. She did not understand the science behind it, but did understand the economics. If this ‘creature’ could be mass produced, and molded into an effective fighting force, she could return her investment several fold. “Tell me Doctor, the shield you mentioned. Is it impervious to both energy effects and physical projectiles? What about electromagnetic waves? What sort of shielding has this new prototype got against that?”
She followed Zane around to the testing area as he answered questions. “What was the price tag? I’ve carefully avoided looking at the bill.” She took a seat next to Zane and waited to be hit by an enormous figure.
Chandra followed Zane to the elevator and rode with him up to the observatory level, exiting as he held the door with a nod of her head to him. She still found it a little unbelievable that even firing continuously, the robot’s reactor would last quite as long as 20 years, a short period of time considering her age. She stepped up to the glass. “Let’s get this show going Doctor.”
Chandra smiled as Zane explained a thing or two about the shield and the physical display confirmed it. “And electrical? Electromagnetic? That also looked like a M249 SAW… what about higher caliber weapons? What is the resistance of the shield? Could it stop an anti-tank round persay? Would perhaps something shot from a barrett light fifty get through? And how about various mutations, such as the ones that can manipulate gravity or metal and the like?”
She then looked at the papers he had given. She had heard the price tag he had mentioned, and set to flipping through the set of papers. “250,000 includes research and development that has been done thus far? Or is that the bare minimum for the model?” by the tone of her voice, she was not in the slightest disappointed by a quarter million price-tag, provided the ‘bot would live up to it.
Chandra nodded, though frowned a little bit as the shield faltered slightly. “I understand Doctor. I can assume that the shield won’t even falter slightly after you have finished your improvements?” She turned away from the observatory. She did not need to see the weapon load-out of the robot. She trusted that Zane would not announce the demonstration if the weapons were capable of delivering on the promise. She did however have more questions.
“What is the practical range of its weapons?” She asked, looking at Zane. “And, how much of a trail does it leave?” she was well aware of the danger a sharpshooter faced from the merest muzzle flash of his weapon. She was suddenly concerned that the bot might suffer from the same fallacy, if its weapons left a very noticeable trail, an enemy could call in artillery which likely would get through that shield it had. “And of mutations, I know this is not your specialty, but is there a way to render it immune to the powers of a mutant?”
Chandra leaned against the control panel, folding her arms over her chest. “The price-tag associated with the prototype, is that indicative of the final product’s cost?”
She kept a pleasant smile on her face, as much to let him know that $250,000 was an acceptable price, even though she would prefer something a might bit cheaper. “As for what mutation would I prefer it to be resilient against… well, magnetism and electric bursts; the sort of thing that would render it useless with little effort. Of course, and this is not something I would recommend, an option would be to make it entirely of high impact plastics. It would make it relatively resilient to something that manipulates metal, but then again… telekinesis would rip it to shreds.”
She shrugged some. “Perhaps it is something to work into your force field, should it be too difficult to modify it to dissipate an electric discharge?” She hmmed softly to herself for a moment before continuing, “We’ll need volunteers when we get to that stage of development. Tell me Doctor, would it be possible to produce a ‘mix and match’ model? Something that could have interchangeable components… sort of like a one bot fits all? I know it may be a ways off, but is it possible? Also, is it possible to increase the range of the laser blast to say about 5,000 meters? I can envision a sharp shooter bot. Also, what is the penetration power of a fully charged laser shot at it’s maximum distance?”
Chandra nodded. “I should certainly hope so Doctor. I am thinking of essentially three types of robots.” She moved from leaning against the control panel to sitting before him, hands folded on her lap and crossing her legs. “Two specialist ‘bots. One like the robot sitting in the bay behind us, designed for long distance shots, a sniper would you, and another like your original stalker prototype; something that can easily get up close and personal. The third would be the ‘infantry’ ‘bot. A one robot fits all situations, interchangeable parts, preferably reduced cost, the works.”
She watched him for his reaction, smiling pleasantly. “What is the maintenance on these robots? How frequently do their joints need to be oiled, etcetera? Also, programming… Did you isolate what caused the anomaly in the original stalker robot? Is the original still in commission? What sort of things can be done with the programming?”
Chandra nodded, smiling along with Zane. She honestly did not care much for what he chose to call the robots… she would go along with that. As far as she was concerned, the mother or father of a being deserved to name their creation, and she only paid the bills around the research facility.
“Zero maintenance eh? Oil flushes and the like? Everything wears out sometime, and some materials are more resistant than others. Speaking of fluids, what does it use for lubrication? Does the energy cell that powers it require cooling or any such thing? And when it chooses” she almost did not like implying that a machine would be conscious enough to make choices, “to turn off various systems to bypass an ‘injury’, this isn’t going to cause a short or malfunction within the programming, would it?”
She thought a moment longer on what he had said about the programming having too much of a human personality. “You programmed it to be… funny? For example? What exactly do you mean by ‘human personality’? And do you mind answering just why you felt it would be beneficial to do so? Benefits and drawbacks for having taken it out?”
”You’re allowed to laugh Doctor, shows you are enjoying your work,” Chandra said with a smile. She had noticed the inkling of a laugh in Zane’s face and chose to call him out on it. “When was the last time you saw the sun Doctor?”
Chandra stood up before he had answered. She intended to get him out and have lunch, somewhere other than the research facility. She crossed the floor to the elevator, pressing the call button. “Tell me Doctor, what is your favorite food? And then, during the trip there, tell me what your expectations and hopes for the stalker series of robots to be.”
Chandra would have preferred the Italian, but smiled and went along with what Zane wanted. It was to be his treat for a ‘job well done’. She followed his lead back to the ground level, stopping by the break room.
“Doctor Bishop and I will be back shortly,” Chandra waved Joseph back to his seat as he rose to leave. “Sit back down Joseph. I’ll be fine for a couple hours getting lunch. You should visit the cafeteria, grab yourself a bite to eat. Same goes for you Mr. Gerard.”
“Yes ma’am,” her body guards responded.
Chandra smiled and left the break room, rejoining Zane in the hallway. She followed him outside and to her limo. She nodded as he explained his expectations of the stalker series, looking out the window and paying more attention than might be expected. When he posed the same question to her she thought in silence for several long moments.
“Costs down, for the general grunt type, of course… the costs can remain up for the specialist robots. But for a front liner…” she smiled. “See, I would like to fund an army for sale with these robots, something that cannot be stopped by a conventional army. I have pretty much the same expectations as you doctor.”
