>All right, Amp, spill it. What are you up to?<
“Will you be patient? I told you, I’d show you in a minute.”
>Yeah, and you said the same thing half an hour ago. And I have yet to see anything but you playing ‘People Watcher’.<
“Just chillax. I know what I’m doing.”
Vibe huffed and pouted, and began tapping her foot beneath the table. The pair sat on the patio of one of the numerous corner cafes in New York. Amp’s gaze was steadily fixed on the masses of people who swarmed the sidewalks, intent on surviving the daily drudgery they called life. She held an empty paper coffee cup in front of her, and was currently tapping the container in a slow rhythm. Several coins rattled inside every time she made contact with the table.
Ten more minutes passed, and Vibe was ready to leave her sister sitting solo, when Amp finally perked up. Grabbing Vibe’s arm, she pulled her sister to her feet and into the moving mass.
>Hey That hurts Wha-?<
“Just keep up,” Amp cut her off. “Come on ”
>Amp, if you don’t quit yanking my arm off, I’m gonna dye your sweaters purple again.<
“You do, and I’ll cut your hair again. Now pipe down and keep up!”
A few moments later the shorter haired redhead skidded to an abrupt halt, causing her sister to bump roughly into her.
>Amp!< she started, but her sister cut her off.
“Shhh! Look.” She pointed. Half a block away stood a group of tourist, about eight in total, all older people, perhaps in their sixties. Multiple cameras pointed skyward were the tell-tale give-away. “Remember that note you played at Nico’s?” Amp asked her sister in a low voice.
>Yeah. Why?<
Amp handed Vibe the set of tuning forks they had traded for on said occasion. “Think you can do it again?”
>Did I stutter? Again, yeah, and why?<
“Watch. Start playin’ and follow my lead.” Vibe huffed, and briefly considered walking away, just to spite her sister. But the look in Amp’s eyes help the promise of mischeif. And Vibe was curious. So she complied, scheming in the back of her mind how to get even for the annoyance.
The effects of the almost inaudible sound made themselves noticed almost right away, before they even reached their intended targets. A ripple in the pedestrian traffic seemed to follow the Twins as they passed along, toward the middle of the walkway. Commuters paused in their progress, their gazes fixed on an unseen horizon. After a few moments, they would shudder, blink, perhaps gaze around in momentary confusion, and then continue on with their frantic, yet mundane lives.
As the Twins approached the tourist troupe, the same effect happened. Except now the girls slowed their passing. As they walked by, Amp shook the coffee cup she still held from the café, coins rattling inside.
“Donations please,” she said simply.
Slowly as if drugged, all eight elderlies extracted purses, wallets, coin purses, and other money carriers, and promptly emptied their contents into the cup. Not just money, but anything else they had available; gum and candy, painkillers, keys, and various other items. It was too much the cup, so Amp paused and took hold of one of the ladies purses, and dumped everything in it. Vibe watched, her eyes lit up like a child in a candy shop. She kept up the hypnotizing tone steadily.
Quickly, before the non-zombie-like population noticed what was happening, the pair continued on down the sidewalk, then ducked inside a storefront. As had the pedestrians outside, the store owner and occupants quickly feel under the pair’s melody.
“You never saw us,” Amp stated simply as the two of them slipped behind the counter and vanished into the stockroom. Outside, they could already hear the enraged sounds as the tourists realized what they were now missing. The Twins slipped out into the alley, and headed away from the scene at a run.
>That was a rush!< Vibe exclaimed, finally ceasing her ‘playing’. >How’d you do that??<
Amp grinned hugely at her. “I didn’t do anything. That was all you Vibe. Looks like you just learned a new beat.”
Vibe stared at her, astonished. >I did that? On my own?<
Very rapidly the amazement was replaced by sheer, impish glee. New York City had just added yet another threat to it’s general populace, one with an addiction to ‘shopping’, and a knack for causing havoc in the process.
