The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

Kyle took her offered hand and shook it, "I'm Kyle... Just Kyle. Thanks. Just got here today. Haven't worked at all." He smirked playfully. It wasn't the playful smirk he would give most girls however. And it wasn't the same smirk he would give Rupert, though it was closer to that. It lacked any flirty intentions. (and it lacked the tiny hint of meanness that was in a smirk directed at Rupert.)
When it took 2 minutes to realize how totally smitten two people were for each other, trying to get in the middle of that was just a waste of time, and more of a hassle than it was worth. She was clearly off limits.

Raina turned a little red and bit her lower lip. "We uh, well, uh, " she looked at Rupert and shrugged. "We met each other a few days ago to be honest." she pushed her hair behind her ears turning her face down and looking at Rupert from under those lashes feeling like a young school girl. She grabbed the hem of her skirt nervously with her hands. "Detective Rupert didn't know what he was getting himself into." she cooed with a smile. "What are you two doing here?"

Rupert laughed. “Oh, I think I knew exactly what I was getting into,” he said with a sly grin Raina’s way. “Last I checked, we were getting some Ruebens. Kyle here,” he melodramatically motioned to the young man, in a believe-it-or-not manner, “hasn’t even heard of them before. Would you like to join us?”
At about that time, two distinct cracks of heavy-duty ceramic plates against metal countertop came from the front of the coffee shop. “Two Ruebens,” Lucy intoned dryly. “One with ‘hold the spit’.”
A Rueben: roost beef, sauerkraut, Swiss cheese, thousand island dressing, and rye bread, put together in the semblance of sheer toasted perfection.

Raina giggled. "You havent tasted them unless they're new york style." she beamed. "It's my night off." she admitted. "So I'd love to join you, but I can't stay too too long, since tomorrow is not my morning off." she joked sliding over to plant a kiss on Rupert's cheek.
She felt a little overdressed in the place, but seeing Rupert now, she was glad!

Kyle gave them an 'I'm too lazy to be disgusted with you, and I'm sort of amused' look.
"You know... you two are almost adorable enough to make a person sick." Kyle said. He took the Reuben with a brief, "thanks Lucy" and looked at it with some reservation. He cut the thing in half, picked up half of the sandwich, and took a bite before he could change his mind.
It took a moment for the taste to register, and then Kyle's face contorted and he near backed up clear off the back of his chair. He swallowed, and from the look of it his throat was coated with sandpaper.
"Can I get something to drink, please?" It was clear Kyle had never tasted anything like a Reuben in his life.

Rupert grinned at the teen’s reaction, and—just for comparison’s sake—he picked up his own sandwich whole, and took a long, relishing bite. Chew... chew... swallow. He grinned down at the young man. “Good, isn’t it?”
Kyle’s intense reaction had been enough to even distract Rupert’s attention from Raina. She looked so good today—like she’d been out dancing. ...There wasn’t much that could distract him from Raina for long.
Meanwhile, Lucy was snickering. “A boy who can’t handle a Rueben ain’t ready for a threesome.”
"OK, time to move on... this isn't a bed and breakfast."
Sonya opens her eyes blearily and looks at the cop looming over her. Damn... I thought I'd be OK here. It's the third time she's been woken up in as many hours, and she's beginning to understand what they really mean by "the city never sleeps." But there's no sense getting into trouble with the police, so she nods cooperatively. "Yeah, OK. I'm moving, I'm moving."
She's stumbling a little with exhaustion. Tonight's the first night since her arrival in Manhattan that she hasn't been able to cadge enough money on the streets to pay for her room, and she's beginning to realize that, with the summer over, she might be in real trouble. The bodysuit she's worn under her clothes ever since she, um, found herself is surprisingly comfortable and insulating, but it won't keep her alive in a blizzard.
This isn't working, she tells herself as she stumbles along under the policeman's gaze. I need to find a way to make regular money, soon... Though without ID or connections or money or skills, it's pretty hard to find a job... and while her little shapeshifting talent has kept her out of trouble dozens of times so far, she hasn't figured out any way to really make it pay.
Tomorrow she'll... well, she doesn't know what she's going to do tomorrow, but she'll think of something. For now, though, what she really needs is a way to stay awake for a few hours, make it through the night... and "Insomniacs Anonymous" sounds like just the right place. She can't afford a room for the night, but she can manage a cup of coffee... especially if the refills are free.
A skeezy-looking guy comes tearing through the door in a rush as she approaches it, and she just barely dodges him. That's a little offputting, but she squares her shoulders and walks in anyway. At the counter, she orders a cup of coffee -- three sugars, double cream -- and counts out the change to pay for it, hoping she doesn't look too pathetic. A familiar-looking couple is talking to a cute boy nearby, and she wracks her brains for a minute trying to remember them before it finally comes to her.
"Hey, didn't I hear you sing at the Jazz Club the other day?" She comments impulsively, without thinking; she knows that intruding into their conversation is rude and it's not the sort of thing she wouold normally do... especially since there's no way they can recognize her, since she was wearing a different body then... but she finds herself desperate for some human contact, so she barrels right along.
"You were amazing... I've never heard anybody sing like that. Are you a professional?"

ooc: eee Way to read up on the posts! Yay!
ic:
Raina turned away from Rupert to see a striking young woman- though very tired looking- standing before her. At first it took Raina a second to remember about the jazz club, but then the biggest smile of her life came across her face. "Hi there. Yes that was me!" she beamed " A rare occurance, I'm not usually allowed to sing." she admitted extending her hand to the young woman. "I'm Raina." she said with a smile "Nice to meet you, thanks so much for the compliment"
(( OOC: Actually I posted on the jazz club before realizing that it was over weeks ago… *blush* ))
< "Hi there. Yes that was me! A rare occurance, I'm not usually allowed to sing. I'm Raina. Nice to meet you, thanks so much for the compliment"
Now that she finds herself in a conversation, Sonya doesn’t entirely know how to follow through. It’s easier when she looks like somebody else, but right now it’s just her, and she feels the urge to just hide in her coffee.
On the other hand, the girl seems friendly enough, and Sonya could stand to make a few friends in New York who might still recognize her in a week. So she puts her mug on the counter and smiles. “Hi, Raina. I’m – um, I’m Sonya.” It feels weird using her real name in conversation… she hasn’t since that night. And it’s not your real name, now is it? It’s hers. She shakes off that line of thought, too uncomfortable to consider for long, and takes Raina’s offered hand.
“Don’t be modest; you were amazing. I wish I could sing like – gah!” She drops Raina’s hand and jerks back as a flood of information enters her mind. The experience itself isn’t that startling anymore – she’s become accustomed to that, whenever she touches someone, and often when she tries to eat food – but the girl’s genetic structure is like nothing Sonya has experienced before. “You’re not human!”, she blurts out without thinking.
There’s a sudden silence, and Sonya seriously considers running away and hiding, but she’s done that once too often in the last few weeks and she’s getting sick of it. “Um… I mean, you sing like an angel…”

Raina heart fluttered the instant Sonya said "You're not Human." her eyes darted to Rupert, he had to have heard that. She started to mentally freak out and looked at Sonya trying to convey the importance that Rupert not know she was a mutant- when Sonya recovered on her own. Raina was more than appreciative for that compliment.
"an angel?" she laughed trying not to seem too nervous. "Nah." she grinned. "You new in town?"

Rupert’s first impression of the latino girl who walked in: nothing much. Honestly, he was still paying a little too much attention to Kyle and his intense reaction to that Rueben to take note of her. His second impression, after she complimented Raina’s singing: she seemed a bit shy, and hesitant, and her clothes looked a bit more than normal-teenager rumpled. Hmm. His third impression, after her outburst and recovery: ...it was very likely she was on drugs. The counting out of change, the tired, hungry, rumpled look, the sudden jerk away from shaking Raina’s hand, as if she was hallucinating...
...Today was really Rupert’s day for dealing with strays. Raina, at least, was taking it well—after a single startled look back at him, she’d switched back to her usual self, with a mostly undetectable undertone of nervousness in her voice. She must see this sort of thing a lot, he realized, remembering her line of work. A group home for runaways... that’d definitely put her in a position to handle this just as well, if not better, than he could.
"You new in town?" Raina asked.
Rupert leaned around her to look at the new girl, with a friendly smile. He didn’t offer his hand—no need to chance a repeat of her earlier outburst. “Ever tried a Rueben? If you haven’t—it’s my treat.” He hooked a thumb back at Kyle, who still seemed to be recovering from his first bite. “I love seeing the expressions on people’s faces. The name’s Rupert, by the way.” The girl looked like she might not be opposed to a free meal.

Kyle quirked an eyebrow at Lucy's comment about threesomes, "Why? You offering?" He laughed for a moment, but he was still trying to swallow the taste away, "But seriously, can I get a coke or something... The taste is just too fricking weird."
Kyle's attention was stolen from trying to get something to wash the Reuben flavor out of his mouth with by the entrance of another girl... who, in a matter of moments was somehow in a conversation with them. Really, she was only talking to Raina. And talking to Raina produced a strange effect. The girl, while shaking Raina's hand, freaked out and loudly exclaimed that Raina wasn't human. Kyle's spine twitched straight and he looked at the girl... Sonya... and Raina. The looks that passed across their faces told him all he needed to know, but he combed briefly through each of their brains just to confirm it. His power was already warmed up from digging through Lucy's head, so it took him only a moment for each girl.
Both mutants. Rupert sure kept some strange company considering his job.
The girls seemed to cover for the slip up well. Raina had looked like she might die if Rupert knew she was a mutant. There was a healthy relationship for you. Kyle filed the information away, seeing as it didn't help him out at all at the moment. He smiled charmingly, "She can have mine. I don't think I'll be finishing it." He glared at Rupert harmlessly, then looked back at Sonja, "I'm Kyle, by the way."
(( OOC: Rupe -- Sonya's not a redhead, she's a light-brown-skinned Hispanic brunette at the moment. I know, she was a leggy redhead in the Jazz Club. She's a six-foot guy at Sanctuary. She's puzzling that way. I probably just need to start adding a little "this is what she looks like in THIS thread" bit to all my posts... (grins) ))
The way Raina freaks at Sonya's comment makes a few things clear in a single moment, even bleary as she's feeling.
The first is that Raina knows exactly what she's talking about, even if she herself doesn't. The second is that she doesn't want her boyfriend to know. And the third is that she knows something is strange about Sonya.
Madron! What did I just do! Really, the last thing she needed was to make her oddity obvious. But there's nothing to be done about it now, so she just tries to go with the flow.
> "You new in town?"
"Um... not exactly, I guess... I've been here for a few months. Just, you know, trying to get my feet under me, and stuff."
> “Ever tried a Rueben? If you haven’t—it’s my treat. I love seeing the expressions on people’s faces. The name’s Rupert, by the way.”
Sonya hesitates a moment, her mother's early training cautioning her against accepting food from overly friendly older men... but, she reminds herself, she'd been the one to start the conversation, and he seems pretty decent. In fact, she gets the impression he's mostly just humoring his girlfriend... which is OK with Sonya. Really, she's more into the cute guy sitting next to them, who -- if she's worked out the dynamics right -- seems unattached. And she is hungry.
"No, I never have, Rueben -- um, I mean, Rupert. And, thanks! That'd be great." She's lying, of course... it's funny how they seem to assume she's from Kansas, or something, but Sonya assumes they're used to strays from all over the country, and she sure isn't acting like a native. Which is just as well, she supposes, if it gets her offers of food.
< "She can have mine. I don't think I'll be finishing it. I'm Kyle, by the way."
She smiles. "Are you sure? I try not to steal food from cute -- um, I mean I try not to steal food when I can help it..."

Kyle caught her slip and smirked. It wasn't the first time he'd been accidentally been called cute by a girl who hadn't meant to say it.
"Sure, sure. Go ahead." Kyle said, handing her the plate with the Rueben on it. He'd only taken one bite out of it. He wasn't planning on ever doing that again. He glanced at Lucy, as if to remind her that he still wanted something to drink to wash the taste out of his mouth, but she seemed to be intent on ignoring him. He'd get something as soon as he left. Which might be very soon.
"Thanks, Kyle!" She returns the smile, ignoring the knowing smirk, and takes the sandwich with what she hopes reads as polite enthusiasm rather than more accurately as desperate hunger. Bread and beef and cheese and cabbage, her fingers tell her before she even bites into it, and she has to admit it's a pretty good sandwich when she takes a bite out of it. "That's really nice of you."
She munches a little in the suddenly awkward silence, then remembers something Raina had said earlier that had caught her attention. "So, Raina, are you really not allowed to sing? Howcum? Your voice is amazing."
