The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

((ooc: Insomniacs Anonymous is a small coffee shop about a block from Central Park. Open twenty-four hours. Run by insomniacs, for insomniacs. The owner is Bethany Marley; her daughter, Lucy (aka, darkluciferbunny666), helps her run the place. It’s cramped and cozy, with all the chairs placed in front of a single counter.
They also have good sandwiches. This place is now open for business—feel free to use it, ya’ll.
The bell above the door jingling and the teenager’s commentary came at the same time. “Welcome to Insomniacs Anonymous, zealot dorkwad and friend. May I take your order?” The girl in the heavy black eyeliner gloomily asked, from her cross-legged perch on the counter. It showed off her black fishnet stockings, and the fact that her black skirt was really a skort. Just because Lucy was showing more skin than a Huston hooker in summer didn’t mean she’d lost her modesty.
“Be nice to the zealot dorkwad,” an older woman admonished, from behind the counter. “Hey, Rup. Who’s your friend?”
“I always knew you were a homo, but I never took you for a pedophile.” The girl said, glancing up from her laptop long enough to look at the two men who’d just come in, and cough discretely into her hand: “Sodomy!”
“Hey, Lucy. How’s your Dark Vampiric Mutant Master doin’ these days?” Rupert returned banteringly.
The goth girl perched on the counter glared. Much as if, in her mind, she was going over forbidden incantations to freeze Rupert’s heart out where he stood. “He’s just fine, thank you. He’s getting stronger. And,” she flipped a strand of her dyed raven hair back over her shoulder, “he’s going to come for me. ‘Cause he knows I can see the future, and he appreciates that in a woman.”
Rupert couldn’t hold it in anymore. The sixteen year old goth and her tone of deeply self-righteous affront was just… too much. He collapsed, laughing, against the wall behind him. “Kyle, Bethany; Bethany, Kyle,” he said, motioning from the young man at his side to the older woman behind the counter. “And that’s our resident goth mutant with precognitive daydreams.” He said, smirking as he pointed to the girl.
“I am a mutant!”
“Sure you are.” Rupert and Bethany answered, nearly in unison.
It wouldn’t take a genius like Kyle to tell that Rupert came here rather often.

Kyle's whole body jerked back, "Whoa... He might be a homo, but I'm not. And even if I was..." He paused to look at Rupert here, a playfully disgusted look on his face, "... I just don't think you'd do it for me."
Kyle laughed listening to the company and their highly familiar banter. These people knew each other well enough to insult each other outright. The girl was an odd one. Cute, and near bare, but odd. But if there was any truth to what she was saying, it sounded like it may be the sort of information he was hoping to find. He wasn't sure he wanted to deal with a crazy chick, but it was worth looking into whether or not she was lying. And he find that out all too easily.
He smiled amiably and sat down at a table, "I'm Kyle. I just got to the big city today... and Rupert says I should learn what a Reuben is..." While thus hinting his order, he slowly, gently explored Lucy's brain, looking for that bit of information that would state: mutant. Or Not. It wouldn't be hard to find. That sort of information was common to everyone, stored in the same place, with the same basic statistical information. A "what am I?" section of personal awarness. Kyle located the information, duplicated it, and snuck it out of her brain and into his own. His spine straightened a bit as he made the extra effort to stabilize it into his own brain. Then he could view the information without trouble.
There it was, blazing bright and obvious. Mutant. Precognitive Mutant. Kyle smiled. She wasn't lying. Kyle turned his gaze to Lucy and gave her a particularly pleasant smile. And she'd never know how he'd trespassed in her mind.

Lucy smiled back at Kyle, quite sweetly, past her black lipstick. "You'd be cute, if you weren't closeted." She hopped off the counter, leaving her laptop where she'd been sitting as she started gathering up ingredients. "A Rueben for the jail bait. What about you, homo zealot dorkwad?"
"Same for me--hold the spit--and black coffee, if it's not too much trouble." Rupert causally returned, as he seated himself in front of her laptop, and started shamelessly reading the word file that she had up. "That," he said, "is the worst vampire poem I've ever read."
"Isn't it, though?" Bethany replied, as Lucy let out a very fluent stream of curses and rescued her computer off to a safe location under the counter. "So, first day, huh? Does your neck hurt yet?" She asked. A little quip towards all the tourists who stared up at buildings.

Kyle smirked at Lucy's comment about him almost being cute. He wasted no time, save for a pause the space of a smile, in responding, "Well... I'd lie to you and tell you I'm bi if it would be any help."
He watched with amusement as Rupert violated the teens privacy. The mother seemed to be all for the violation. So the goth chick wrote bad poetry? It was something for him to muse over while he contemplated whether or not he was going to slam Rupert for the fact that he had been interested enough to read it.
He glanced at Lucy again, "My neck is fine. Touristy gawking isn't really my speed."

Lucy snorted at Kyle’s little bi-quip. "Was that a pick-up line? 'Cause I so don't do threesomes with zealots."
Bethany, meanwhile, had taken her daughter's laptop back out of its safe spot. At a glare from the sandwich-making girl, she waved an innocent hand; "Just checkin' my e-mail. Unless your poetry has gotten so bad it's in the news section, I think--oh. Oh, woah. Rup, you're gonna love this."
Rupert hmmed?, his expression quite amused from the interactions between Lucy and Kyle. He was used to the goth teen's offensive speech. Kyle... was a virgin, as it were.
Bethany looked up at him, grinned, and turned the laptop towards him. She reached a hand around to tap the screen. The top story on Yahoo News?
"Mutant Registration Bill Passed," Rupert read once to himself, once out loud, and once with a bit more shock.
And then he was out of his seat, punching the air with one fist, and whooping. Bethany laughed. All the practical concerns about enforcement faded away: it had passed. The stance of the U.S. Government on mutants had just caught up with the times.
Behind the counter, Lucy dropped the skillet she'd just gotten out. It hit the floor with a tank, bouncing twice before rolling to a stop. "Sorry," she muttered with an uncharacteristic lack of malice, picking it back up.
((ooc: Not to interrupt your flirting with Lucy at all, Kyle... *grins* But in light of the new plot line starting, I simply... couldn't resist.))

Kyle raised an eyebrow at Lucy, "But you do do threesomes?" He smirked. Kyle hadn't been able to resist the comment. She had left herself wide open for that. He was distracted from teasing Lucy by her mother and Rupert announcing that the Mutant Registration Bill had passed. He tried to fake a more profound reaction to the news, but all he could really muster was a shrug. The news didn't affect him much at all.
Sure he was a mutant, but he'd been 'registered' since the age of about ten. Not that he could remember that time in his life, but he had gathered from Eckman that his being documented and all that had been what lead him to Kyle. The thought made him a little pissed off that they had passed the bill. After all, 'Kyle Arac' was a registered mutant, but they still couldn't FIND Kyle Arac. Maybe they hadn't looked for him very hard. Maybe there was nobody that had really wanted him to be found. But the facts still remained; He had been abducted at the age of 13, and nobody had come for him.
Kyle sneered at his own thoughts, the look on his face affected by his pondering. There was something dark in his eyes.

Rupert didn't catch Kyle's initial reaction to the news--he was a little preoccupied with reaching across the counter to hug Bethany, and kiss her on the cheek. The woman laughed, and kissed his cheek back. "Can't say I'm as happy as you, Rup--can't say I really care at all--but hey, good for you."
He did notice, however, the sneer on Kyle's face, and the look in his eyes. It was a look that said, whatever the teen was thinking so hard about, it wasn't anything pleasant. Bethany discretely scooted the laptop and her own position a few seats away, and began studiously checking that e-mail of hers. Lucy had picked up the skillet, and seemed hell bent on either making the best or the worse Rueben sandwiches ever known to man.
Rupert sat himself back down, wiping the stupid grin off of his face. He wasn't sure what had caused the kid's reaction. Probably the news about the bill, but it could have been something entirely random, for all he knew. Stray thoughts could do that sometimes. If it was the bill... it could be because he knew some mutants and was brooding over what would happen to them (not likely, considering he was dealing with Mister 'No Ties', here); it could be because the kid was some kind of bleeding-heart mutant-lover (...the chances of Kyle being a bleeding-heart anything didn't exactly blow Rupert's mind); the kid himself could be a mutant, but that was just...
...That was a possibility. Rupert himself had said it--it seemed like it had been weeks since he'd spoken to humans, outside of Raina and work. Of course, he'd been joking at the time. The chances of Kyle being a mutie were slim to nil; the kid just didn't seem stupid enough to hang around with a cop. A cop who specialized in mutant crimes. Then again, he didn't seem like the type of person to back down just because something was stupid, either--he struck Rupert as the stubborn type. And the type that was smart enough to hide what he was. ...Rupert was getting so paranoid these days. He tried to push the thought away; the best he could do was push it to the back of his mind. It was stupid; but it was there. A possibility. Nothing more.
"Heh. Sorry about that--it was rather big news, for me. So, where'd you say you were from, Kyle?" He asked conversationally, trying to bring the kid out of his gloom.

If Rupert was trying to bring Kyle out of his gloom, asking about the kids past was moving in the entirely WRONG direction. That was the absolute last thing in the world that was likely to cheer Kyle up. Of course, it was hard to know what actually would cheer Kyle up. It wasn't as if there were a lot of things that were sure fire ways of making him smile.
"I didn't." Kyle said, debating whether or not he'd say anything more. He was tempted to say all sorts of things, most of which blatantly criticized the competence of cops in general. Many of them would make a pretty clear statement that he was a mutant, or at least lean the people in the room toward that idea. Still, he had the intense urge to say something cross...
"Where I'm from isn't that great of a topic." Kyle said, struggling to be at least a little less rude to his companion of the moment than he wanted to be, "I'm not entirely sure what is hoped to be accomplished by that bill. It's my understanding that the law isn't all that great at finding people. I mean good god, how many people go missing and are never found?" Kyle was doing his best to keep his voice impartial, but he wasn't succeeding entirely. He sounded a little bitter, and just a little pissed off.
"Hey Rupert," Kyle said, looking at the cop sitting with him, "How long does a person have to be missing before they can be declared legally dead?"

...So they were back to this. Another verbal standoff. Obviously, the kid's past was not a topic up for discussion. Rupert casually eased back in his seat, twisting to put his arm up on the counter. This did two things: it gave the teen a little more breathing room, and it let Rupert look at him face-on. He didn't react to the first part of what the kid had said--the part about the bill, and the jab at law enforcement. There seemed to be a main issue behind what the kid had just said. The effectiveness of the police force wasn’t it. Rupert leveled out his tone. "I don't know how long it has to be, Kyle. We don't really deal with that in my department: when mutants go missing, no one reports it. I would think it would be up to the family to decide." He let out a slow breath, and drew one back in. He probably didn't want to go here. But he went anyway: "Who was it?"

Raina was feeling wide awake after her few training sessions, and had decided to go dancing. After a few hours all dolled up with a few fellow NYC gals she'd met, she decided to head to Insomniacs Anonymous for a warm drink. Autumn was rearing it's head and the night air was chilly.
She opened the door unzipping her coat causing the bells above the door to ring a little alerting the staff that a new customer had come in. Her long red hair flowed behind her in a red blur as she moved, leaving a floral scent in the air. She smiled at the closest people and catching Lucy out of the corner of her eyes, gave the girl a wave.
She grabbed the table to her far right sitting down and pulling off her coat. She was dressed rather provactively herself, but knowing her punk rock roots it wasn't too bad. She wore elegant black boots to her knees that laced up the front complete with a shimmering shirt black dress and colourful bangled on her wrists. Her earings were large and flashy, and her makeup was borderline neon. Her eyes darted around under their feathery lashes. She looked glamerous sitting there, and a few guys in the place may have been noticing this.
Raina hadn't noticed Rupert yet- she had found herself a cup of coffee and was leaning over the table exposing her graceful shoulders and partially bare back reading a paper. Her expression was worried. "Mutant registration" read the headline. Hey eyes scanned the image on the front page looking for familiar faces. She wondered how long she could keep hidden with the mansion.
She was completley engrossed in her reading that she didn't notice a man slink into the seat across from her nor did she notice Rupert. Besides, this place was very mutant friendly, why would she expect him to be there?
"Hello there beautiful." Raina's eyes darted up to meet the expression of a very cool yet sleasy looking man. He had wirery hair pulled tight under a bohemian style cap, his eyes were hidden by dark sunglasses but Raina was sure by his face that his eyes would be sunken in. He was pale and gangly, if Raina had to match him to an animal, she'd think of a spider.
"Excuse me?" said Raina, not unkind, but a little nervous.
"I saw you come in, I thought I'd join you."
He was clearly hitting on her, but Raina wasn't sure how to get out of the situation. She didn't like to be unkind to people... but this guy was a real sketchy kinda guy. So she tried to make eye contact with some of the staff.
One young man picked up on the look and instantly thought of Rupert- the regular cop. Seeing the young woman's nervous expression and watching the man slink closer and reaching his hands across the table, he decided to at least try and intervene first.
He walked briskly over to Raina's table and smiled warmly. "Anything I can get you, Sir? You've been here a while, I thought you'd be leaving soon." he gave the man a stare.
Raina fidgeted in her seat trying to appear calm and cool. She suddenly felt under dressed and vulnerable so she wrapped her coat around her without putting her arms in the sleeves.
"I'm quite fine where I am." said the man. "enjoying the sceneary.. really..." he ran a snake like tounge across his teeth and raina realised he must be a mutant. She was nervous now. really nervous. She didn't want this staff guy to get hurt.
"I think i have to insist." Said the young man again trying to be brave.
"Oh really?" said the greasy guy standing up. He was easily a foot taller than the young man.
"As you wish." replied the young man dryly, looking at Raina trying to let her know he'd get help.
He left their company and crossed the room to Rupert and his friend. "excuse me." he said. "You're a regular here, and well, there's suspision among us part-timers that you're a cop. I'd hate to make you work when you're off duty, but we seem to have a situation over here with a man harassing a young woman." he looked scared, like he was in over his head. He pointed across where Raina was now standing on her tip toes to look the man in the eye.
"I didn't invite you here!" she growled. It was obvious the conversation had elevated since the young man had left for Rupert.
"Oh but you know you like men with an x-gene." he smerked reaching out and grabbing Raina by the hips.
That was all it took for Raina's training to take over. Within seconds she had flipped the man over and had him sprawled on the floor, her boot to his neck. Her jacket had landed on the ground and if you didn't see the man on the floor you'd think she was some absurd super model striking a pose.
"Bitch!" growled the man reaching for her foot but she shoved it harder.
"Don't ever mess with a girl who knows self defence." she spat. It was then that the young man from earlier returned looking very surprised.
"I grabbed another customer who's a cop. Maybe he can radio for someone to take this guy to the station or something?"
Raina looked scared not wanting any trouble, especially from cops... but it was then that she spotted Rupert across the place. Her face softened and she almost began to glow. A little smile creeped to the corner of her lips.
ooc:
OK, I left it kinda open so you guys could still keep your conversation going and then jump in when you feel is good- so a few holes and such.
But also Kyle, Raina is a mutant, but she's in love with Rupert, and does not want him to know

Kyle turned casual, as if the conversation they were having didn't really amount to much of anything. His answer however, was very loaded, "No one who matters."
Kyle was highly distracted by the lovely lady who was being harassed by some scum bag. Granted, Kyle was no stranger to hitting on women, but he was a firm believer in being tasteful about it. There was no need for pushy rude forceful behavior. Furthermore, if you were going to be a ladies man, you ought to be handsome, or at least have a vague grasp of how to be appealing. Unattractive crude men pushing themselves on women who were otherwise seeming to be having a perfectly pleasant evening... now that was just wrong.
Soon enough a young man who had done his best to intervene retreated to call on the copper sitting next to Kyle.
Mr. Do-Gooder Kyle thought, shaking his head with a smile. He looked the young man in the eyes, "No need to wonder. He's a cop." Kyle looked at Rupert and smirked, "See... you're no good at hiding what you are." He nearly stuck his tongue out at him. Kyle stood up, still looking at Rupert, "Come on, I'll help you save the girl."
However, while he was talking, the girl rather effectively saved herself. Kyle turned in time to catch her just about stomping on the offending mutant's face... yes, it was obvious he was a mutant, Kyle didn't even have to rob his brain for that.

Rupert was focused on Kyle and that heavily laden, cryptic answer of his. He didn’t notice the beautiful woman that come in, or the mutie freak who began harassing her, until Bethany’s hired help tapped him on the shoulder about it. It was good that the little coffee shop was getting popular enough that Bethany could hire more people to staff it. It was bad that it wasn’t just the same comfortable clientele anymore.
"No need to wonder. He's a cop. See... you're no good at hiding what you are." Rupert didn’t like the look of that smirk. But he’d take the kid’s help. Not that he need it, but why not. It was more productive than keeping up their little game of—
Woah. Now that, right there, was a woman who could handle herself. Rupert gave a low whistle of appreciation. “Nice. Where’d you learn how to do—? Raina?” He stared dumbly for a moment, before a smile broke out over his face. “Nice, Raina. Was this freak bothering you?” He glared down at the man on the floor. Not the man. The mutant. “You going to cause more trouble, or are you going to leave like a good little freak?” Rupert asked coldly, motioning to Raina not to move that wonderful boot of hers until the creature had answered, one way or the other. He didn’t have his gun, but he did have a cell phone with dispatch on speed dial. A bit of jail time, with a cellmate that had even less love for them than Rupert did... that would teach the thing to try anything on human women. Though really, Raina had done a pretty good job of teaching that lesson, herself. Damn, she looked hot.
He didn't introduce Raina to Kyle, or Kyle to Raina. Deal with the freak first. Then, they could have introduction time.

Raina was smiling sillily from ear to ear when she realsied she still had her boot in the man's neck. "Alright, Alright." he choked. "I give." he shot up the second Raina let the weight off her foot. He bolted for the door but then stopped and turned. "obviously I'm not the only freak." he spat and left slamming the small door leaving a resonating ring in the air. Raina stood for a moment looking very hurt from the comment. "Freak?" she growled. "You can't work with dangerous runaways and not know a little self defence." she relaxed her stance and looked elegant again. She placed her hands on her hips. "Hey there mr bear-of-an officer," she joked (hehe rupert cartoon joke there!) "Miss me?" she didn't wait for a responce but leapt forward with arms outstretched and embraced him tightly kissing him squarely on the lips. "Who's your friend?" she grinned.

The reference to Rupert Bear was lost on him--all he could think of was "Mr. Grizzly", the nickname a certain wolf mutie had given him. It puzzled him for a second. A cool embrace and a very nice--very nice--kiss were more than enough to push such petty thoughts from his mind. He wrapped his arms around her loosely, with a foolish grin on his face. Now it was introduction time.
"Raina, this is Kyle. Kyle, this is Raina." He realized, suddenly, that he didn't know either of their last names. That seemed a rather big oversight. A somewhat bigger oversight with Raina than it was with Kyle. ...He'd make sure to fix that. Later. "It's Kyle's first day in the city."

Raina reached her hand out. "Hi there, Raina Hiltz, Please to meet you." she beamed kyle a smile. "Welcome to the big apple. I just got here at the end of spring. Been working at a home for runaways. " Had he searched her mind it would have been easy to tell she was a mutant, with a rather strange ability. But he'd also see right in the front of her mind was how deep she was in love with rupert, and how desperate she was for him not to know she was a mutie.
