Growing up had never been a concept that Pix could grasp. As time passed, the idea of it became a sort of science and a challenge. I mean how is it that one grows up? Most people physically grew but Pix had never become tall. You couldn't actually grow up if you couldn't do it physically. Could you?
It wasn't till one day, when pix was reclining on her bed, that she came to a realization about her bugs. A few of her caterpillars were making cocoons. Later the caterpillars emerged into butterflies. The cycle of her bugs growing up with her age caught in one place went on and on until one day, Petunia Gardener decided that she was going to take her bugs' teachings and grow up too.
So Pix shifted herself into a caterpillar, like her bugs that had tought her how to grow up, and as that caterpillar, she inched her way into one of the walls of the Sanctuary. Once there, she cocooned herself a bed, and waited for growing up to happen.
Weeks turned into months. petunia lived off of the bugs that she created. They kept her stomach full and on the whim of her thoughts, took care of her. Kept her warm, moved her, cleaned her. Time moved past months and petunia repeatedly forced herself to loose track of time because that's what grown ups were supposed to do. Right?
It was over a year now, since Pix had gone missing from her bedroom, and she was sure that she was a grown up now. She'd spent so long as a caterpillar in a cocoon, that the time had to be long enough. Right?
Obediently, Pix's bugs carried her out of her wall, and into the room that had once been her room. Though with her no longer there, her things had been moved out and divided up long ago. Once in the middle of the room, Petunia began to grow. At first the cocoon tried to peek petunia from getting bigger, and her little bug face pressed against it because that was only natural and what a cocoon was supposed to do. Keep you little and you fight it. She'd watched her bugs do it millions of times. After a moment's struggle, a caterpillar emerged and grew, shifting back into pix the short little lady with dragon fly wings.
Pix stretched her wings and her arms. Bugs pulled their way loose from her skin and scurried to form a sort of suit over her body to keep her modest, and she looked around with her hands on her hips. Satisfied with her accomplishment. So this is what being a grown up was like.
The insect godess left the room and wondered down the hall till she stepped on an abandoned toy that squeaked. She stepped back, then stomped on the toy again giggling. repeating the stomping and the giggling till a terrible realization hit her.
"Ahhhh DARN IT!"
