The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. "Yes well I hope I won't need you too but over prepared is better than under prepared."
On the way down to the lobby in the elevator Venus relayed his ideas for a few signals if she needed his help in some way. It was a good idea and she nodded as he talked.
"A sound plan. And as to your question," Mina paused for a breath, "Scenarios mostly. I think through all the possible ways my current plan can go wrong and what to do in that situation. Plans don't survive first contact with the enemy and all that."
Moments later the elevator doors slid away to reveal the lobby. Mina led the way once again, pausing only to give Venus the address of the club.
"A place called Slither, of all things."
No accounting for taste in naming. At least she would only be there long enough to hear what she needed and get out.
“My assistance is a standing offer by the way, pro bono of course, your company is award enough, if ever you’d like my assistance you must only call my name. “ his lips curved upward. “It might help to give me a call as well.”
He nodded to her all business answer. And replied with simple approval.” Good.”
A small laugh escaped him, of course he had been to the place, while he didn’t frequent it as it wasn’t the highest caliber of places it was a common place of interest of the underground mutant subculture. Mutant owned and ran business tended to take on that sort of appeal. It did however make things a little bit more interesting, he may have entertained the owner’s daughter, she was twenty five but the old man was protective.
"This should be interesting. You know Slither is a mutant club I take it, which adds all sorts of lovely variables. but we shouldn't stand out either, at least anymore than we do normally"his eyes ran up the length of her appreciatively.
Hmm, free muscle? Well, perhaps free wasn't the best term for it considering that Venus' intentions were pretty well spelled out. Not that Mina minded that of course. Attention of that variety was something she was very well used to. That was her comfort zone.
"Well naturally, otherwise I might think I had a stalker."
His nod and approval of her pre-mission ritual earned a nod from her. As a fellow mercenary he likely understood that mentality well. Of course plans likely didn't involve much for someone like Venus. He definitely had the edge on her in the melee department. There were likely few that could best him. Mina nodded to his information about Slither.
"Naturally, I've been past once or twice. It's not difficult to tell the clientele just from the lines out front."
Mina smirked a little.
"Besides, you won't stick out. In a club like Slither I'll be the one that looks out of place."
It also raised questions about her targets for the evening. Were they mutants? Or perhaps simply humans with a fetish?
The car ride was much another urgent drive. He understood working with time tables, at least they wouldn’t have to wait in line outside, typically He didn’t have trouble at the gate, but this particular club had a rather handsome bouncer that happened to like Venus as much as any Lady ever did. Of course that was before the owner’s daughter, but they both seemed to have an understanding of how things were, he wasn’t looking for anything permanent so there likely wouldn’t be much drama.
He pulled up to the valet and the process of cat mouse and tip was played all over again, keep it close and the tip would be worth it.
They neared the entrance to the dismay of those without the pull to try something of the sort. “Illios, It’s been too long.” The man smirked at Venus shook his head with a smirk., “ Save your lines for those that haven’t heard them. Watch out miss, he’s a lady killer. Have fun inside you two.” He left off with a wink to Venus.
The club was fairly lively. The fact that the clientele was doubtlessly mutant, This should be interesting.
The ride was quick and Mina paid little attention to it or the game that was played with the valet. She merely put on a happy face. She wasn't unhappy. Merely serious and thinking over her last minute mission. Hence the smile in order to blend in.
"I think I'll manage just fine. Thanks for your concern though."
Mina flashed a bright smile and a wink at the bouncer as they walked into the club. Numerous obvious mutants milled about or danced to the pounding beat of the music. Venus, as she'd expected, fit in here quite nicely. The loud music made it difficult to hear much unless it was shouted or you managed to put a wall between yourself and the speakers.
The music itself was what would make her job tonight more difficult than it had to be. The tonight or nothing nature of the job made her frown inwardly. It was too bad she couldn't just sneak into their offices and steal the appropriate documents. Annoyance aside, Mina's eyes began scanning the crowd. As a bunch of business men she had no doubt they'd stick out like sore thumbs but there was a enough of a crowd to slow down the search none the less.
Venus moved through the club with relative ease, it wasn’t too often that he went on dates the required him to go undercover. And in such a fun way. Once on the dance floor his bulk arms went into the air as he dance his way across the room toward where he noticed some suits. The height vantage probably helped him find who he thought she might be looking for quickly. He positioned himself near a group of ladies who were participating in a bachelorette party, Crazy women at their craziest. He could have had more fun with this if he didn’t already have plans. But in the meantime dancing was a good cover.
For her part, Mina faded into the crowds around the dance floor and followed Venus's progress from there. He seemed to have spotted her targets. Mina moved through the crowds with ease. She had changed her demeanor to that of the shy lady who was entirely in over her head at a club. It was difficult for once. By her very nature Mina was not shy in the least. It was a simple fact that she was desirable. Mina knew it and used it quite often. So pretending that she didn't see the obvious was more difficult than any other bit of acting she'd done in recent years.
This act, difficult as it was, got her to the edge of the party in question. The only issue being that Mina could barely hear. The ability to focus on sound like she did was a detriment in a club with the music turned up so loud. The music overpowered any other sound she might try and listen to that wasn't shouted. Without being part of the group there was little she could do. Frustration coursed through her. She would have to either find a way to listen in or get invited into the group.
Unfortunately the club seemed to be doing an excellent job of keeping anyone that had not been invited away. Mina's temper momentarily slipped her control. Thankfully she was in a fairly dark spot against the wall. The momentary slip that cause her fist to pound against the wall went unnoticed by those around her even as a slight headache began to pulse behind her eyes. Unfortunately for Mina the headache quickly grew into something she wasn't able to suppress. Instead of leaning casually against the wall in the darkness near the group of business men Mina was clutching the wall for support.
Venus paid particular attention to his date, yes she had dragged him away from their date to fulfill a last minute business request, but she was worth the trouble. At the moment she looked slightly frustrated as she slouched in the shadows. He wondered at how she was hearing the conversation with all of the music pounding around them.
For now, he could only dance and not give her spot away, she wasn’t in danger that he could see, so he would keep playing his part, he looked back down to find the club owners daughter before him. She was dancing, smiling and looking mischievous as usual. She wasn’t happy that he had moved on. He made it clear that what they had while special was temporary and not exclusive, but the girl apparently had fallen head over heels for him…and not just literally. She had managed to shoo away the girl he was dancing with and replaced her without him noticing, that probably pointed to him paying too much attention to Mina. That said wasn’t paying attention to random females what a man did in a club? he should be ok if he managed to not draw any unnecessary attention to her. a glance away from the petite young thing in front of him told him that all was not going according to plan and so he should be ready.
He circled his dance partner so that she was between him and the table of men, now instead of watching Mina he would watch their movements, anything aggressive and he would descend on them like hell incarnate.
Mina was paying absolutely no attention to her partner. Her head was killing her and to top it off her eyesight seemed to be fading. There was no perceivable reason for this and thus Mina was not happy at all. Unbeknownst to Mina there was a perfectly good reason for her ailment. He happened to be sitting among the gentlemen she was supposed to be spying on. They were all, save one, human and thrill seekers to boot. Coming to this club had been their idea of an adrenaline rush. But they realized that perhaps they ought to bring a little insurance. Thusly it wasn't the bouncers keeping the rest of the club at bay. No it was one gentleman of dark suit and swarthy skin that sat leisurely with the more stiff businessmen.
His particular unique talent only worked on other mutants. It didn't stop them using their abilities. No, it simply gave any mutant that got within a certain radius of him a blistering headache. Mina had unwittingly hit that radius, and being as she was entirely unprepared for it, was hit by it. Between her own frustration and the mutant power acting on her there were some interesting side effects. None of this really had much bearing on Mina's plight at the moment though, unaware of most of it as she was.
Besides, her sudden and growing lack of eyesight was of more import to her than why she had such a headache. Though the music that was exacerbating that music certainly wasn't helping at all. Angrily and without thinking, Mina threw up a silencing field with little care as to how far it extended. Thus it easily covered the men she was supposed to be spying on. However, unlike the usual bubble this one had a new effect. A dizzying flow of words and sounds cascaded through Mina's head, regardless of the field. The headache made it difficult to concentrate and this wasn't helping much. However the knowledge of how to make it stop was not something she possessed. Mina could tell the field was in place and yet it seemed to be having no effect at all! Everything went on as normal, save that she could now hear everything within the field with perfect clarity.
Venus danced, and hovered about the group going unnoted for the most part, the group was having fun, save for one gentle men that seemed to be on security duty. All business, he was the man to watch if things got sticky.
He found that his dance partner was working to his advantage, apparently they knew who’s daddy the club belonged to because mr. suit wasn’t really casting the same I am going to melt your face look he was giving the rest of the club. The other guys however seemed to be amazed by Venus atleast until a pair of green and blue twins walked by behind him in what might have been enough fabric to make a single dress between them.
Venus would have been chasing them himself if he didn’t already have a date and a decoy dance partner. Val laughed at him as his eyes wondered to the twins. “You haven’t changed have you?” Venus smiled winningly. “Should I?”
Val hesitated but shook her head. “ I guess not, you wouldn’t be you, I just wish I could tame you.”
“A caged Tiger, is no tiger at all.” Venus replied smoothly.
One man was wondering under his breath whether his wife would catch him this time or not. The woman that had just waltzed past had a much deeper voice than almost any woman ought to have when she wasn't flirting with one of the bouncers. In a corner a couple was likely doing things that were better left behind closed doors. And in the middle of the group of businessmen to gentlemen were having a quiet but terse argument over the price of some thing or another. It was plenty clear that there would be no agreement this night and her employer need not have worried. She carefully noted the prices the man was willing to pay to give them over the phone once she was out of the club. Now she simply had to figure out which way was out.
That was going to be trouble considering she still could not see. Almost as though it were an afterthought, Mina let go of the silencing. It wasn't needed anymore, now that she had what she needed. The disturbing clarity of sound returned to cacophony. Mina's headache remained, as it had been, a fresh throbbing reminder that leaving soon would be good. The series of signals she'd worked out with Venus in advance came to her mind but without knowing whether or not someone was looking it would not be safe to draw her gun.
She was, in effect, stranded in a corner of a club with no discernible way out and a headache that only seemed to increase as the moments passed. Well, Mina had certainly gotten herself out of worse scrapes. At least this wasn't life threatening that she was aware of. With one hand against the wall, Mina began making a slow retreat in the direction she remembered as being away from the group of business men. Hopefully Venus would take the hint. Otherwise this would take far longer than she wanted.
Venus smiled down at the young woman before him, “ do you think you might like to get together later this week? Give me a call.”
She nodded hopefully. He gave Val a brief hug.” I’m off, I see a friend in a bit of a bind.”
Val’s eyes immediately darted to the blue and green twins, but when Venus strutted off in another direction only to find and scoop up a woman in his arms she was no less displeased.
The large red man scooped the woman up with out asking she looked like shed been roofied or something. At the very least she was out of her comfort zone.Venus wasn’t one to not keep his eye on the prize so when she made her tactical retreat he was on his way and a man of this size didn’t have the typical troubles of moving through a club.
“Mina, are you alright? I didn’t see any action so I played it cool. “ He spoke softly to the woman now in his arms.
All of her muscles tensed immediately upon being picked up. In these few brief moments was coming to realize just how much she'd depended on her eyesight. She only relaxed when Venus's voice issued forth near her ears. Normally she'd have protested this sort of treatment but at this precise moment Mina was quite grateful for it. With a frown on her face, Mina replied.
"No. The job is done though so get me out of here. I'll tell you when there are fewer ears listening."
As they left the vicinity of the business men the headache that had caused the whole issue slowly began to recede. A breath left her body in a quick sigh. That had caused most of the problem. Yet it had only started when she'd gotten close to the business men. A mutant among them? It was a possibility. Mutation was a strange and unpredictable thing most times.
If her back up for the evening wasn't proof enough of that then Mina wasn't sure what was.
"I can walk as long as you guide me."
Now that he was there Mina was growing increasingly annoyed with the portrait of weakness she was projecting. At the least she needed to be walking. Even if she had to use her date like one might use a seeing eye dog.
No, was not the answer he expected. “ Absolutely.” He replied calmly, she wasn’t ok, but her instinct was to leave and take what that had come for. It was reasonable to him and he could always revisit them once he had seen her safely home.
Venus gently set Mina on her own two feet, but left a large red arm settled around her back and his palm on her opposite side. If she missed a step she wouldn’t come any close to the ground.
They made their way slowly but steadily towards the exit. Again his girth was allowing them to progress for the most part unchallenged. Ever so often he would clear his throat and get the attention of whoever foolishly hadn’t moved out of their way. The valet had earned himself a even better tip than usual as he had been tipped off by a bartender or someone of them leaving. The car was waiting on them. and just like that they had fled the scene, Venus wondered momentarily if he shouldn’t have gone back in and made a mess out of them.
He sped through the streets once more and handed his keys to yet another valet at Mina’s building, they continued their slow but steady pace to the elevator and then to Mina’s Apartment.
He refrained from asking what had gone down again, she’d talk when she was ready. Venus smirked as a tended cart was waiting near Cosmina’s door, it was the food from earlier. It looked like the chef’s staf had coordinated well with Mina’s apartment staff. More money slipped to more help. The bellhop nodded and made haste away from the apartment as Venus waited for Mina to unlock the door.
Mina remained silent as Venus undertook the necessary steps to get them back to her apartment. It was strange having her capabilities reduced like this. As a mercenary or assassin she thrived on depriving her targets of one of their key senses. She could make sure she wasn't seen so as long as they didn't hear her Mina was as good as invisible. Now she was blind and it ripped away most of her strength. How could you avoid what you couldn't see? Or shoot it for that matter. Plus she had to retrain her abilities now. Never before had her silencing acted in such a manner when she'd used it. An unpredictable asset was useless to her.
Eventually they arrived to her apartment. Still as a statue Mina stood as she debated between looking foolish and simply passing Venus the keys. Relying on someone else so much was anathema to the women that had spent so much of her life alone. However in this situation...Mina sighed and held her keys out toward where she remembered Venus being.
"You do it."
She stood there in the hall and strode into her apartment after she heard the door sweep open and could be sure the doorway was clear. Now that she was on more familiar turf Mina could make her way through the apartment easily. Plunking herself down in a chair she grimaced.
"It's probably blatantly obvious but I'm blind. I'm not sure what happened but that's what went wrong. There was a mutant with the targets that prevented me from getting close enough to get the information. I managed to obtain the information regardless but the damage is done."
