Nightmares Are Strange Creatures (Syn, Isabel, NJ)
Neena glanced around in slight confusion. Usually she enjoyed her dreams, as they often took on the appearance of her homeland. But while the vast savannah of the Serangheti stretched into the distance as always, something obviously was not right.
Rainclouds dominated the sky, obscuring the sun and moving as fast as little trains. A chill wind ruffled the unusually dry grass, and even the tree appeared scragglier than than normal. A deathly still settled over the land.
And the colors.... or lack thereof....
It was like looking at the negative of a photograph. Everything that should be dark was light, and light was dark. Even Neena's skin had turned a sickly gray, and her hair was as white as snow.
"Okay, who messed with the color controls?"
Her voice echoed as if in an empty room. Definitely not right.
She began to wander, trying to figure out what in the world was going on.
Normally Syn didn't dream, or at least she didn't remember her dream. The few she did remember were events she had taken part in. One example would be when herself and her sister Deathstar were still living with their parents. Though this was often just before Deathstar killed their parents by draining them of their life force.
This dream, however, was much different. Her house was not there. Instead a vast landscape sprawled out around her. It kind of reminded her of the movie The Cell. Things had a familiarity about them but they weren't all correct.
Taking in the sight for a moment the girl started walking in hopes of finding a way out.
Well now, wasn't this interesting? Isabel couldn't remember the last time she'd dreamed so vividly. Nothing really seemed out of the ordinary to her at the particular moment. Except for the photo-negative. That was new. Other than that, there was nothing supremely odd about her situation. All kinds of strange things happened in the young mutants dream. Like that one time when Mayor Swiss of Cheddarton asked for her aid him and his Gouda citizens in fending off the hoard of rodents that threatened to gnaw his lovely yellow and orange city to the ground. However, this environment didn't seem to be edible. It was familiar, though. Africa maybe? This ought to be fun.
Only one other thing stuck out to her. The world was upside down. And surprisingly leafy. On further inspection the answer was easily revealed. She was in a tree. Correction: She was in a tree, hanging upside down. Promptly amending the situation, she climbed to the ground and set off in a random direction. It would do no good staying in one place. Especially if she was upside down. Can you imagine the headache that would result? Not exactly her idea of fun.
After a few moments of wandering she stopped for a moment. That lion at the last left turn had been maddeningly unhelpful. Honestly, what kind of direction could she find with an answer like "Ribbit"? Stupid Lion-toad. Consider that the last time she ever asked one of them for help. Oh, now wait one moment. Was that... "Syn?" Now what was that young woman doing in her dreams? And made of human flesh, no doubt. Hm. She'd been Mozzarella last time she'd featured in a dream.
"Hey Syn!" Isabel called, quickly making her way over to her waking world leader, easily falling into step with the photo-negative mutant. "Any idea what's going on here? I tried asking the Hyena back at the watering hole, but he just burst out into tears. I don't even know why I bothered. They're so terribly emotional, those Hyenas." Dream worlds. Go figure.
I’m just a well-adjusted gal who likes to leave a serious amount of mayhem in her wake.
Neena paused to scratch her head. While she couldn't feel fear, she sure could feel confusion. And she was feeling it rather keenly at the moment.
Nothing in this place made sense. She'd run across very few animals so far, far fewer than should be in such a place. And those she did encounter were all mixed up, and not just sound-wise. She decided to keep her distance, in case the cheetahs remembered they were not supposed to be eating fruit.
However, keeping her distance proved to be rather awkward as well, since when she walked, she didn't seem to get anywhere. But when she stopped, the land beneath her feet continued.... or maybe started, to move. Very treadmill-esque, indeed.
Off to her left, she spotted two figures. She blinked, and zoomed in. Two young girls, at least ten years younger than her and of different race, if the black skin tone had been inverted like her own gray skin indicated.
"Jambo!" she greeted them in Swahili, and attempted to walk toward them.
Attempted. She seemed to be going in circles around them. How frustrating. Finally she shrugged.
"Sorry," she called out. "But I seem to be on a spin cycle. I'll try the other way." And she proceed to circle the opposite way, again without making much progress. She stopped, and frowned.
"Well, I dunno, but apparently there's something about you two that my feet dislike. Can't imagine what."
