The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Sometimes it was best to remain close to home. That was the number one thing that Amber had learned on her unfortunate trip to the New Jersey dig site only a short while ago. If she hadn't left home then she never would have gotten kidnapped and if she hadn't gotten kidnapped then she never would have been forced to fight wolves and bears to the death. The animals she had been forced to fight were no less victims than she was, it was the humans that she blamed for the entire situations. Humans that, for the most part, didn't live around Sanctuary. She wasn't entirely sure of the details of that situation as to why all the troublesome humans had left, but she did know that the people who ran Sanctuary were very careful to keep the neighborhood mutant friendly. And mutant friendly neighborhood meant no risk of being kidnapped by evil scientists and submitted to inhumane experiments and fights to the death.
Every night since returning from her unfortunate trip, Amber had gone into the city, found a quiet little back alley, and shifted into the dinosaur form of her choosing. Lately it had been her Compsognathus, the smallest and most unassuming of her forms. Well, aside from the tiny gliding lizard she had so recently picked up and hadn't had a chance to practice with yet. Her Compsognathus not only had the advantage of a small size, but it also made hunting easier because no one missed mice or rats and it wasn't large enough to hunt much of anything else.
Tonight, however, she wanted to pursue bigger prey. Amber needed the challenge of the hunt, to keep her mind off the nightmares that had plagued her recently and to rebuild her mentality such that she would no longer be the victim. With that in mind, she chose her very first form which also happened to be her favourite, the Deinonychus. It was a fast and sleek predator, roughly human sized. In it, she could hunt comfortably anything up to the size of a large dog, and that's what she needed that night. Plus, she had yet to pick up any predatory forms that were larger than human. One day, perhaps, she'd pick up a truly massive predator, but that day had yet to come.
There was a particular alley Amber had known about for some time, low traffic and very quiet, not far from Sanctuary. She made her way there, crouched in a corner and removed her robes. Shifting started only moments later and, gritting her teeth against the pain, less than a minute later a Deinonychus stood in the place where a teenage girl had been only moments before. All that was left now was to find a target, something challenging and dangerous, but not too dangerous, something that could be used to train up her skills without truly risking killing her.
As long as Amber remained within Sanctuary territory she knew that there wasn't (too much of) a risk of angry mobs attacking her or anyone else, for that matter. She remained careful, however, not wanting to tempt fate. The shadows were her ally, both in hunting and in ensuring that she did not become the hunted. She wasn't entirely sure how long had passed until she found her target, a large rottweiler dog, no owner, no leash and simply walking the streets. Maybe it was someone's pet but more likely, in Amber's mind at least, it was a dangerous pest. Perhaps it had gotten free from someone's yard or something, and weren't rotweiler's known for attacking people anyway? Thus, her hunting and killing it would actually be a benefit to society because there would be one less danger on the street. With that internal justification, she began stalking her prey.
Strolling down the sidewalk in the middle of the night in 4 inch heels and a strapless cocktail dress was not what people considered normal. Especially this close to the Sanctuary when you looked like a human. But Seyta was still a mutant and walking was allot faster than getting a cab to a club. Funny how getting to a nightclub was always the hard part. She never had to wait in line to get in, always sat in a VIP booth, never paid for her drink...and never got a date. Sure Seyta was pretty enough, she even got the occasional grin and nod from across the bar but that was it. So, like most nights when she wasn't working Seyta found herself cutting through back alleys and such heading for a place to get a relax and pretend to have a good time.
Seyta wasn't exactly paying the closest attention to her surroundings though as she made her way to the club she had chosen for the night. This lead to not realizing which alley she had ducked into to get to the next block, when she looked up from the pavement she saw what she first though was an Ostrich in the low light. Half a second later she realized it was a dinosaur, a real, living dinosaur. Seyta then noticed the dog it was following, towards her... "Oh s***!" Seyta yelped and ducked behind a stack of boxes. It looked like the Jurassic Park version of a velociraptor, she knew those were scaled up for the movie but that's what came to mind.
Her mind raced as she huddled in the false safety of the boxes. Had it seen her? Was it a mutant? Was it close enough for her powers to protect her? She dared a peek out from her cover to see how close she was to the creature. She couldn't give an exact distance but it was outside her range, that much was clear. That meant after it finished with the dog, she was an available target. Even if it was another mutant, Seyta looked human, and couldn't exactly prove her powers to them in defense if they attacked her. Her options seemed slim, Seyta couldn't fight it. Running would be too risky, her heels wouldn't help that either. That left hiding there and hoping it walked into range long enough for her power to take effect so she could slip past it. Seyta tried not to whimper as more scenes from Jurassic Park about pack hunting flashed through her head. Please, oh please let it be alone...
Amber wasn't used to going after such large prey, especially large prey with such keen senses. The trick was to remain as silent and still as possible, sneaking up until she was within range to pounce. Dogs, of course, had both keen hearing and an even keener sense of smell. She could only hope that her stealth skills were up to the task of avoiding its hearing and as for the dog's sense of smell, well, she could only hope that the scents of the city masked her own scent enough to catch her prey. One agonizingly slow step at a time, she got closer to the dog and she was fairly certain that she could run faster than it, if it came down to a chase. Which, now that she thought about it, a chase did sound kind of fun.
"Oh s***!"
Both dog and dinosaur turned their heads at exactly the same moment as an unknown woman uttered an explanation, startling them both. Amber couldn't' say why the dog had been startled, but for herself, her only excuse was that she had been so focused upon the hunt that she had forgotten to pay close enough attention to what was going on around her, in particular who was around her. Even in the relative safety of Sanctuary territory it was an unforgivable thing to do, to let her guard down on so extreme a fashion. Even allowing someone to get as close to her as she had could potentially be a death sentence. She had all ready been captured and held prisoner once, she most certainly didn't want a repeat of the experience, nor anything worse for that matter.
Keeping the dog within sight, just in case it should prove to dangerous and aggressive, Amber let out a warning trilling screech at the woman and bared here rather exceptional collection of pointed teeth. Although she made no aggressive moves towards the woman, too many bad things had happened to her in recent memory to let her guard down. Until the woman proved herself to not be a threat, Amber wasn't about to show weakness. It wasn't that she wanted a fight, far from it, but being the victim yet again was simply not an option. She stared at the stranger with her unnatural pitch black eyes, waiting for her next move.
Seyta gulped trying to stay hidden behind the boxes. The situation really was bad, and getting worse. She shivered hearing the dinosaur screech at her and saw the dog run past her out of the alley... It did see me. Great, now what do I do? Running was still the worst option other than fighting, and since she had been seen hiding was pointless in all honesty. Why was she even hiding in the first place? Because she looked like a human. Seyta was a mutant though, and in Sanctuary territory.
Rash action wasn't her style in most cases but this was one that called for it. Going against her better judgment Seyta pushed herself up from hiding turned to face the creature, half holding her arms up in surrender. There was no turning back now, she was completely at, what she hoped was, a mutants mercy. Given her attire and not even carrying a purse it things went south, she was going to join the long list of unknown New York killings. Swallowing hard she forced a shy smile. "Um... s-s-sorry I didn't mean to um, bother you... Please don't kill me."
Despite the lack of light Seyta was able to get a better look at the Dinosaur now. No wonder she thought it wan an ostrich at first, it was covered in feathers. But the eyes, they proved to Seyta this was a mutant, so it could probably understand her. Despite still being terrified of it, trying to talk her way out of this was now a possibility. Glancing over at the shiny row of teeth, she swallowed again since it was likely going to be a one sided conversation. The downside to that, she had no idea what else to say. Great, this was suppose to be a casual night at the club and instead in stuck here in a staring contest with a dinosaur This new though landed a firm hold in Seyta's mind. Pushing against her fear now was a sense of annoyance. Annoyance that just happened to take this alley and run into this mutant. Annoyance that she had been scared into hiding behind a box like a little kid. Annoyance that the first time her power was actually helpful it wasn't going to work.
After a few moments Seyta crossed her arms and let herself succumb to her new emotion over the fear. Tapping her foot in mock impatience she kept her smile up and waited for some kind of response from the mutant. If it attacked her she wasn't going to be a defenseless coward. Hopefully it wouldn't come to that and They both could get on with their lives.
The woman was trying to hide behind boxes. No psycho mutant killing woman would hide behind boxes when faced with an actual mutant, would they? Because clearly a walking dinosaur could be nothing other than a mutant. If the woman wanted to kill mutants, she could have just come at her with a knife or, even worse, shot at her with a gun but she hadn't done anything like that yet. Which was probably a sign that she wasn't a psycho killer and wasn't about to turn and attack her. Probably.
"Um... s-s-sorry I didn't mean to um, bother you... Please don't kill me."
As the dog ran off in the opposite direction, Amber straightened herself from her defensive crouch. Psycho killers, in her experience, also did not tend to plead for their own life and apologize for bothering a person. Scared innocent women confronted by rather dangerous looking dinosaurs, however, might. Especially when they were in Sanctuary territory. Amber didn't know much about how Sanctuary kept hostile humans out if its territory, but she had heard the rumours of mutant violence just like everyone else had and if the woman was indeed human then there was probably a good reason for her to be frightened.
Amber trilled at the woman, this time trying to sound friendly rather than murderously intimidating. How did one seem unassuming and non-threatening when one was a dinosaur with very large claws and teeth anyway? It was surprisingly difficult. Instead of baring her teeth again in some morbid imitation of a smile, however, she rose the feathers on her neck and spread her tail feathers, hoping that such a display would be taken as a sign of 'I am not going to attack and eat you'. There were definite disadvantages to not actually being able to talk.
Seyta took a step back at the trill but relaxed again seeing the dino-mutant stand up strait, thats what it looked like anyway, and fluff out its feathers at her. She almost chuckled at this, What little she knew about animals would make that be one of two things. Trying to look bigger and scare off an enemy or, if dinosaurs where related to birds as scientists claimed, it was some time of mating dance. Neither one of those options seemed likely since this was a mutant not a real dinosaur...but how much of the mutants mind was in control? Well there was an easy way to find out. "Ok um, shake your head or something if you understand me and aren't going to eat me. Cuz it's really weired standing here talking to a dinosaur."
All thoughts of her other plans that night had left Seyta's mind as she stood there waiting for a response. In hind sight this would make a really funny story to tell friends, if she had any that she talked to on a regular basis. A not so funny part was that she didn't know anything about this mutant and they didn't know Seyta was a mutant. That was a very bad situation in this neighborhood when the opposing mutant wasn't in range of her powers. On top of that, Seyta couldn't exactly prove her powers to a skeptic either. "And I'm a mutant so no need to get upset about me being here...."
Seyta's voice held firm confidence now, a complete bluff but she was good at that. The conversation here was definitely confusing but it could be worse. Even if she was human it was obvious that she was hopelessly outmatched by the other mutant. So the confidence had to be because she was telling the truth right? She waited and tried to plan her next move. Not an easy thing to do when the person you are looking at has no readable facial expression.
"Ok um, shake your head or something if you understand me and aren't going to eat me. Cuz it's really weired standing here talking to a dinosaur."
So, judging by both the expression of the woman and the words, Amber had managed to get across the fact that she was not going to charge and eat the poor woman. That was good, no one was going to attack anyone here and that was good for them both. She gave another chirp and a bobbing nod of her long neck. Because yes, she was in fact a mutant and no, she wasn't going to eat the woman. Predator she might have been at that moment, but human was not something that was on the menu, either now or at any time in the future. Although she had the appetite of whatever it was she was shifted into at the time and although things that might make her squeamish as a human did not make her squeamish while shifted, she was still human in mind and therefore could not consider ever eating human flesh. Even thinking about such a thing made her shudder.
"And I'm a mutant so no need to get upset about me being here...."
Which most certainly explained the lack of either murderous intent or running away screaming. In Amber's experience it wasn't the mutants that she had to worry about, not really. Although mutants weren't always entirely innocent, it was almost always the humans that caused problems. It was the humans that formed angry riots, the humans that tried to stab her with knives and the humans who kidnapped her against her will and did experiments on her while forcing her to fight wild animals. The most any mutant had done to her was have his giant symbiotic worms try to eat her while she was in Compsognathus, but that had only happened once and at the time that mutant had neither known what she was nor had direct control over his worms. So really, her logic that it was humans that caused all of her problems pretty much still remained accurate.
The first question that always came to Amber's mind when meeting a new mutant was, what could that mutant do? Of course, being a dinosaur which was also lacking in any means of speach, asking what one's power might be was rather difficult. Thus, the only logical thing to do was to retain human form which but only if she could first go in search of her robes. With another chirp and a hop, Amber gestured for the woman to follow her. Her robes weren't far and once she was shifted back to normal, communication would be about 1000 times easier.
Seyta raised an eyebrow at the mutant, did they just ask her to follow them? Thats what the gesture seemed like. Generally that was a very bad idea, there where people who would easily try to take advantage of a woman like Seyta in this situation, but she had an easy escape plan if it ended up like that. She nodded slowly and moved closer following the mutant. They where in range now so if things did go bad Seyta could just walk away.
The way it had chirped at Seyta though made her thin it was not hostile, atlesat at the present moment. That was a good enough reason to follow for now. Getting to know another mutant wasn't a bad idea. So she followed the Dino mutant, most likely some form of shifter. She had no idea where they where actually going but as long as she was in range it wasn't an issue."So, I guess you're a animal shifter... or dinosaur shifter?" Seyta tilted her head questioningly, until she had reason to slip away she was going to keep their attention. Even though the conversation was one sided it was necessary to keep the other mutant from forgetting her there and walking off to do whatever dinosaurs do.
Seyta kept close and resisted a slight urge to pet the mutant, those feathers just looked like they needed it. Either way she followed the mutant back to what looked like a pile of bedsheets at least partially hidden from view. Clothes? That made sense to Seyta, why would clothed change with the mutant shifter? This brought another thought to her head, was this mutant a man or a woman? Several slightly disturbing images flashed through her head before she took a few steps back and turned around. "Ok, I'm going to just let you um, yeah whatever..." She chuckles dropping her head to her hands. This was definatly one situation worth remembering if she ever got around to telling a funny story.
Maybe it wasn't the brightest idea in the world for Amber to lead a strange mutant back to the place she had stashed her robes in order to shift back into human form and satisfy her curiosity about the woman. After all, while she was a Deinonychus she had some very potent natural weapons as opposed to being human in which she had pretty much nothing. Aura had promised to teach her to defend herself, but so far they hadn't gotten very far with it. Plus, she had no idea what the mutant woman could do which was partially the point of leading her away, of course, but also where the risk lay. She had no idea just how dangerous the woman might be and even though she didn't consider mutants likely to be hostile towards her, she had learned that some powers were, by their very nature, dangerous, even if unintentionally so. There was one lady who had stayed in Sanctuary for a little while with acidic sweat, for example. Any time she started sweating, her sweat would pretty much eat through anything it touched, including both clothing and human flesh. It made Amber pretty relieved that, despite the drawbacks of her own power, at least she wasn't a danger to anyone.
"So, I guess you're a animal shifter... or dinosaur shifter?"
Amber nodded and chirped again, pleased that the woman had decided to follow her, despite any potential risks. Besides, if she had a truly unintentionally dangerous power, wouldn't there be some sort of sign? Like holes being eaten into her clothing from acidic sweat, for example? Or maybe she was actually a skunk mutant and would therefore smell really bad. Amusing thought, that, but the woman didn't seem to smell any worse than any other person. Or perhaps she was like the little girl in Sanctuary, Kaitlyn, who accidentally blew stuff up. That wouldn't be good at all, Amber would rather avoid being accidentally blown up. Or have her skin start falling off. Or anything else that sounded equally unpleasant and disturbing, for that matter. She tried to force her mind away from thinking of every single possible horrible and uncontrollable power possible. Hopefully she would find out soon enough one way or another anyway.
"Ok, I'm going to just let you um, yeah whatever..."
The words were spoken just as Amber's dark green pile of robes came into view. Turning around, she let out one final chirp and gestured for the woman to turn her back so Amber could change. Approaching the location where she had hidden her robes, she promptly completely forgot about the woman who had prompted her to decide to change back early at all. She didn't worry about whether or not the woman might be watching her as she retained human form, something that normally would have been of more than a minor concern. In normal circumstances, not only did she not like to shift in front of an audience because of the grotesque and disturbing nature of her shifting, but also because she was self conscious about her paper white body. It was as if she were completely alone and, being alone, she didn't have to worry about any of the things she normally would have worried about with a pair of eyes watching her.
Steeling herself against the inevitable pain, Amber began concentrating upon the mental image of her human self. Almost immediately she felt red hot agony rip through her as feathers began to recede back into pale, smooth human flesh. Sleek, agile dinosaur limbs began to reshape and smooth themselves, contorting her body into unnatural positions. Her tail shriveled and died, receding back into her body while her neck also shortened significantly. The last thing to change was her head, her jaw shortening as teeth disappeared back into her jaw. Her eyes, as always, remained their same pitch black colour.
Amber shuddered as the final waves of pain receded and she was left human once again. It was always somewhat disheartening to return to human form, feeling the weakness of her muscles and the dullness of her senses. Hastily, she returned her robes to her body, covering herself just in case someone should happen to come across her while she was naked. She wasn't comfortable with anyone seeing her naked. It was only then that she realized that the mutant woman had disappeared. Had she wandered off during the short time her back was turned and she was shifting? But no, if that was the case she couldn't' have gotten that far and she didn't see the woman off in the distance anywhere, nor did she hear her. Maybe she was some kind of teleporting mutant and had simply decided that she no longer wanted to be here? It was a little disappointing not be be able to discover for certain what she could do, but somehow Amber figured she would survive her disappointment. At least she didn't have to worry about some uncontrollable power shrinking her to the size of a mouse, although now that she considered it, she wasn't even sure such a power would be very effective on her. After all, couldn't she just change her form into something larger and thereby reverse the effects? With something new to ponder, she shrugged and turned to head back to Sanctuary.
Seyta turned around as the sound of rustling clothed stopped and was replaced by footsteps. Seeing the mutant walking away she realized her powers had taken effect and the other mutant didn't notice Seyta still standing there. Doing her best to catch up in her heels Seyta Called out. "Hey! Dino person! Over here, turn around." Given the rather quiet nature of the night the mutant was likely to notice her voice but Seyta continued to attempt to catch up to them.
As she drew closer Seyta managed to get a better look at the other mutant, sort of. It was difficult to see much about them due to the large mass of fabric her clothes consisted of. It reminded Seyta of a Muslim Burka even, perhaps that was the other mutants religion? Either way, one thing Seyta could tell is that the other mutant was a girl, the robes couldn't hide that. Anything else was impossible to tell though. Finally catching up she reached out to tap the girl on the shoulder but hesitated. If she was Muslim, as the robes suggested, that would be offending her wouldn't it? Then again she may just need the robes because of some other part of her mutation. Deciding not to chance it Seyta stepped up beside the girl and waved speaking up again. "Um, hi. I'm still here. I think you wanted to talk to me?"
Amber had only taken a few steps before she heard a voice behind her. She blinked a couple of times, confused. Hadn't the woman left somewhere? How had she missed her return? She turned around, quite startled to realize that yes, she had in fact returned. Either that, or she hadn't gone anywhere, which made things even more confusing than they all ready were.
"Where did you go?" Amber asked. It seemed the logical question, after all. It also occurred to her just how nice it was to actually be able to speak. That was the one downside of her power, really, the inability to communicate directly with people. In a couple of her forms she did have fingers that made it possible to write clumsily or, in the case of her Compsognathus form even text message, but speaking was so much more convenient.
"Um, hi. I'm still here. I think you wanted to talk to me?"
"Oh, I was j-just curious is all, what your power was." Amber smiled sheepishly, knowing it wasn't exactly the most pressing or important of questions. Maybe Aura and her love of mutant powers was rubbing off on her. And maybe the woman's power was turning invisible, which would certainly explain the miraculous disappearance. She waited in eager anticipation for the answer.
>> "Oh, I was j-just curious is all, what your power was."
Seyta nodded slowly, of course thats what they wanted to know. If they lived near they sanctuary it was obvious that they wanted proof she was a mutant. Proof was of course confusing. On another note entirely though, the girls accent was not middle eastern. So the chances of her being Muslim as Seyta had though were much lower. That meant she didn't have to worry about being offensive either. "Ever played Where's Waldo? Thats me basically. You got a first hand experience while you were getting dressed even."
Not the best explanation but it wasn't easy to explain. Seyta barely understood it herself and she had her powers for about a decade. She knew what her powers did, more or less, but not the faintest clue how. This girl had it easy frankly. From what Seyta could tell she had a clear cut and simple ability. Something understandable and easy to explain. "Call me Seyta by the way, mind telling me your name? And for curiosities sake, why a young girl like you is waking around this late at night?"
Granted the girl had a power that made her more than a challenge in a fight but still... From the sound of her voice she couldn't be much older 17... possibly a bit younger. There where plenty of unsavory people who sulked in the alleys on New York. Seyta's powers kept her safe but most people would have to plan ahead for a situation like that. Of course this was sanctuary territory, here the girl was probably about as safe as Seyta would be in any other alley.
Where's Waldo was certainly an interesting power, Amber had to give her that. And it also explained, in a weird sort of way, why it had seemed as if the woman had just disappeared like that. She frowned, trying to contemplate how such a power might operate. "But I'm talking to you now, aren't I? I can see you now." Her normally pale white cheeks reddened at the embarrassed thought that the woman might have been watching as she got dressed.
"Call me Seyta by the way, mind telling me your name? And for curiosities sake, why a young girl like you is waking around this late at night?"
"I'm Amber, n-nice to meet you Seyta." Amber held out a hand, in case the woman wanted to shake it. After all, her own power was no risk to anyone else and, if the other woman had been honest, touch shouldn't be a risk when it came to her power either. "I d-don't do well in the daylight. I'm an albino. So I usually come out at night to, you know, escape the world and s-stuff."
Amber wasn't certain if someone like Seyta could really understand what it was like to be a visible mutant who couldn't go outside during the daylight hours. She loved her power, but in some ways it made life extremely difficult. She could barely go out at all during the daytime and even at night, she never knew who might turn on her for the simple fact that she was a mutant and it was difficult to hide that fact.
"It must be nice to be able to disappear sometimes." Amber said the words with a tone of longing in her voice, her mind once again going back to the idea she had had recently of simply disappearing from the world for a few weeks and living life as a prehistoric lizard.
>> "I'm Amber, n-nice to meet you Seyta. I d-don't do well in the daylight. I'm an albino. So I usually come out at night to, you know, escape the world and s-stuff."
Albino? Seyta didn't know people could be albino. Either way it almost sounded like Amber would want Seyta's power. Something she couldn't imagine. Seyta hated it, always had and probably would. Although the chat she had with the girl in the sanctuary did give her some encouragement about using it for something.
>> "It must be nice to be able to disappear sometimes."
Seyta tilted her head and shrugged "Not really. Not when you always disappear, even when you want to be seen." She didn't even try to cover the anger in her voice. If she could Seyta would trade powers with Amber in an instant. Someone else could have them and Seyta wouldn't even blink at it.
In the middle of all that Seyta looked up for a minute suddenly realizing that she was blindly following Amber and had no clue where they were going. Getting lost was a bad spot for her since getting help in finding a way home would be near imposable this time of night. She could stay at the sanctuary though if It got too late, at least it was easy to find from where they were. On the other hand she rented an apartment for a reason and Seyta liked using her own bed. "Um, mind if I ask where we are going?" Seyta mentally slapped herself for getting distracted by some kid and getting lost in New York. She didn't hold it against Amber, it was Seyta's fault in the first place but annoying all the same.
"Not really. Not when you always disappear, even when you want to be seen."
"I think I understand j-just a little," Amber stated sympathetically. Before she had become a mutant, she had always felt invisible. Unless her peers were making fun of her or otherwise trying to make her life difficult, people just had a tendency to ignore her. She was the quiet one, the strange one that no one wanted to talk to or have anything to do with. Maybe it wasn't the result of a mutant power and it probably wasn't nearly as bad, but she could at least understand a little bit. "I wouldn't want to disappear always just...sometimes."
"Um, mind if I ask where we are going?"
Amber blinked, realized she was still walking and that Seyta was following her. "Oh, I guess back to Sanctuary. D-do you know of the place? D-do you have a place to stay?" She knew that many mutants stayed at Sanctuary, that it was a haven, of sorts, for mutants with nowhere else to go. She didn't know much about Seyta, although she didn't seem the violent sort that Sanctuary often attracted, but it seemed like a good idea to ask anyway.
