Alexandra tilted her head to the side looking curiously at some of the book titles. The apartment she’d received from Hunter years ago was filled with books, most of them chemistry books – apparently, at that time he had liked his employees to be well prepared. But since she had decided to occupy all the free time she has had in the past few months with reading there were little books in her apartment that didn’t have their pages touched by Alexandra’s fingers yet.
Today she didn’t have planned to make her book collection richer. But while hurrying out of the coffee shop and go back to work, her eyes fell on the bookstore. She had decided to enter, thinking that she would be out in a few minutes, two or three books sitting comfortably in her hand. That have been 30 minutes ago. Now she wanted more books that she could carry out of the bookstore. Quite a few were already tucked under her arm and she had difficulties keeping them from falling while her other hand was busy picking up another book.
Glancing satisfied at the title – Chemistry: Matter and Change – Alexandra took a step back, ready to concentrate her attention on her next acquisition.

Jorge
When you are an avid book reader, hold your minor degree in literature and have a broken VCR at home, you tend to read through books fairly quickly. Jorge Cervantes, MRC detective was an very avid reader, so much so that he has read every book in his collection at home. Now this was not some bock filled with a couple of crime drama books, no, Jorge had several large book shelves, all of which were bursting to the seams with…well…books. Books from all over the literary periods about women in love, men in love, murderous acts, fantasies come alive, people just trying to survive in an everyday culture. They were the stuff of authors dreams, the kinds of stories that touched mankind to their core…and Jorge loved reading them all.
But, surprisingly, there is only so many times you can read about Elizabeth Bennet trudging through a storm to visit her ailing sister.
Jorge had found himself, for the first time in awhile, lacking something to read. To remedy this, he traveled to a local bookstore he had heard had a good collection. So, once off of work, dressed in a crack, brown leather jacket, dark blue jeans and white shirt underneath, the off duty found his way to the bookstore.
As he wandered the shelves, he peered about and took in all he saw. The bookstore had a very eclectic collection. Their fiction collection embodied not only the masters of classic literature but various types of nonfiction, old and new textbooks for school, as well as a range of other books that covered various subjects.
Jorge had to admit he was impressed as he perused the shelves. He found an old collection of reprinted “Broadside Ballads”, as well as a worn copy of Spenser’s Faerie Queene Book 1. Happily, books in hand, Jorge turned and corner an paused.
Why was there a large cardboard cut of a pale looking, scrawny teen with gelled up hair, baring his teeth. Underneath was written the word TWILIGHT SAGA. Jorge shuddered and shook his head. Crowded about it were tween girls, all fawning and pawing over the picture books that were on display. He had to sigh.
“I guess not every place can be perfect,” he mumbled as he made a beeline out of sight of the vampire romance novels and found himself in the science book area. He turned to notice a book and before he knew it, read the title to himself, a little too loud. “Biological Responses in Human Mating Rituals?”
Her newest book interest had a title that almost made her drool. Almost, mind you. Modern Surface Organometallic Chemistry. Perfect. And the last one on the shelf, too. She needed to have it. Alexandra licked her lips slightly, as her free hand extended to grab the desired object. One more second and she would have touched it.
“Biological Responses in Human Mating Rituals?”
Alexandra stopped. Huh? Sure, it was no surprise that a man would be standing in a bookstore with a book about human mating rituals in hand, but why would he find necessary sharing that with her? Looking at the man clearly unpleased with the interruption, Alexandra spoke, making sure that her voice matched her eyes. “Excuse me?”

>> “Excuse me?”
Jorge at first ignored the question since he did not know he was being addressed. The man had simply saw a book title and read it out loud to himself. He was not trying to strike up conversation or make himself known. But, as he stood there and chuckled a little at the title, he felt as if he were being stared at intently. He turned and that was when he saw her, the woman who had spoken earlier. Apparently her question had been directed at him.
“Oh, nothing,” he replied as he put the book back into its spot on the shelf. “I was just talking to myself.”
He noted the irritated look in her eyes and he had to admit…that irritated him a little. Really? What deep thoughts did he disturb? It was not like he even asked her to step aside or move her car or something that usually got him glared at. He was talking to himself!
He shook his head a little as he backed away from the mass of chemistry book and gave her a little bow.
“Sorry to disturb you. Won’t happen again.”
With that he left the science books and returned to his classic literature. Sometimes the rudeness of people really just got to him. Getting so now or days you really can’t even talk to yourself without getting some type of grief in return. That was not right.
He continued to rant inside his head as he stepped into the shelves of literature and wandered there again. Once back in his element, his mind began to wander, slipping away from the irritating woman and her need for complete and utter silence in the shelves of science books. Though Jorge himself preferred it to be quiet while he searched for books, it was not about to shoot someone daggers for mumbling too loud. So, with that last thought he shunned the rest away. He was off work and all he wanted was to find a good book to ready. Maybe at the same time he could find a good book for Gemma.
Another turn and he moved down the aisle, keeping an eye out for any good literature for his girlfriend, while at the same time trying to sure he would not mumble too loud to bother that woman again. After all, he did not want irritate her, even from way over on this side of the bookstore.
Sometimes, Alexandra couldn’t quite understand men. Actually, humans, in general. Seriously. Why was he the one that looked irritated when he had been the disturbing element? She watched him mumble something about speaking to himself, that he wouldn’t disturb her again then quickly padding away from the science books. Alexandra shrugged. At least he was gone. Now, back to her book.
Except… there was no book when she turned around to pick it. Alexandra blinked a couple of times, was her mind playing tricks on her? Highly unlikely. Blue eyes shifted to the side, where another female was wandering away with her book in hand. Oh, come on… And this seemed to be such a perfectly good day. With her eyes still on the book, Alexandra sighed. She couldn’t do much about it now. It wasn’t like she could swat the woman with a book or something and take it away from her. Another sigh left her mouth as blue eyes shifted toward the bookshelf.
Of course… there was something she could do… Her eyes gleamed for a second and a smirk appeared on her lips as Alexandra quickly turned her head around, scanning her surroundings to locate the man that had caused the interruption. When she didn’t see him anywhere near her, silently, she walked among the bookshelves until she had found him in the Literature section. Keeping her distance but making sure she could comfortably keep an eye on him as well, Alexandra scanned her surroundings to find how she would get her revenge. And the idea appeared as soon as she noticed the shine of metal on the side of a bookshelf.
Unfortunately for the man, the wooden boards that held the books were kept in place by metal bolts and whoever made the bookshelf didn’t bother to hide the bolt heads, leaving them exposed to Alexandra’s molecular manipulation. Smiling slightly, Alexandra grabbed a random book from another shelf and pretended to be actually interested in it while waiting for the moment when the man would be extending his hand to grab a book.

Jorge
Jorge had continued to browse the books, his eyes peeled for something anything else that could catch his attention. Then he saw it, there was it was, a small book lying gently on its side in the midst of several other books. It looked like the only one, and it was so easily overlooked. It was a rare book of by Lennox. The title etched in gold across the spine said “Henrietta”. It was a rare book and hard to find except for annotated or instructional copies. He wanted a regularly published book but those went out of print ages ago. To find one here, he was both shocked and exceedingly pleased.
“Wow, this’ll be good to complete my collection,” he mumbled to himself as he reached out for it.
His hand was just about to graze the cover when there was a sudden pierce of a ringtone filled the air. Jorge sighed as he pulled back and fished around in his pocket. He had forgotten the turn off the ringtone in the store. Quickly he flipped it open and held it to his ear.
“Detective Cervantes here, currently off duty…” he said as he began to pace. There was definitely irritation on his face. “I know Clemens, but it is not my fault you did not get time off for your kid’s baseball game…What?...You’re kidding right? I told you needed to start filing your reports in on time…”
Jorge sighed as he began to wander away from the shelf and his precious book, still on the phone. He was always a man who threw himself into his job. Normally he did not mind so much, but only when it was because he was really needed. Not to listen to a co-worker complain because of getting backlash for his own mistakes. The detective sighed as he leaned against a wall, nodded his head and replied in short answers. He needed to get off the phone now and back to his book browsings…
So close. So very close. Her mutation was already activated, Alexandra just waiting for the moment when he would grab the book to summon the molecules of metal to her. And then AC/DC ruined her fun. The hand retracted to retrieve the phone and then he was gone from the bookshelf.
A low growl left the woman’s lips. Was he under the effects of a good luck spell or something? Why would the damn phone ring just before he touched that book? Taking a deep breath, Alexandra moved. She’d be the end of his good luck. Her attention turned to the book he has been interested in, while she was half listening to his phone conversation. A detective. How interesting. She never quite liked anyone that represented a public authority. And it wasn’t a mystery why – she’d been trough two Registration Acts.
Her eyes roamed over the books – searching for the one with the golden title. She found it quickly and a finger moved over the title - `Henrietta’. Mentally, she smirked. Rare. An eye for an eye. And a book for a book. Alexandra retrieved the book from the shelf and placed it on top of her other books. Casually, she glanced over where the detective – what was his name? Cer-something. Ah, she remembered. Where Detective Cervantes was leaning against a wall. Perhaps she should make a lamp fall on his head too. She’d certainly feel better.
Dismissing the idea (for now), Alexandra shifted her eyes to the books but only half paying attention to them. The rest of her attention was dedicated to the man and the reaction he would have when seeing his book gone.

Jorge
“Yeah Clemens…No the chief is not out to get you…” he said with a roll of his eyes. It was always easier for people to believe that the world was out to get you than admit that maybe there was something wrong with yourself. “No…No Clemens…NO! Okay, that’s it, I’ve told you over and over again I didn’t say anything, and I didn’t. You want to get the chief off your back, then I suggest you do your work. Now goodbye!”
He sighed as she snapped his phone closed and shoved it back into his pocket.
“Insanity…” he muttered with a shake of his head.
Jorge was dedicated to his job…but only when it was to his job! Not the nonsensical ravings of a co-worker who felt as if the whole world were railing against him. The detective sighed as she tried to shake the thought away. He wanted to have his time to himself when he was in the bookstore. Already he peace was slightly ruined by the looks of that rude woman from earlier and just as he found the perfect book to finish his collection…
The book!
Jorge moved back over to the shelf where he had found that rare copy of Henrietta but just as he peered at the shelf where he left it, he was surprised! Gone! It was gone! He hung his head for moment and took a calming breath. He get Clemens back for this. Next he really was going to report him for not filing his paper work on time. Teeth ground and very irritated, Jorge shook his head and exited out of the aisle where his most perfect book once resided, now in the arms of someone he hoped would be a better for reading it.
As he stepped into the open he nudged a table that had several graphic novels laid about its top. Supereroes…who reads those types of comics anymore? He still remembered Ziggy and Ziggy was awesome. But as he looked them over, he sighed when he noticed a book out of place. He picked up the thick volume and shook his head. It must have been left there by mistake, tossed aside instead of being taken back to its rightful place.
“Modern Surface Organometallic Chemistry?” he said silently to himself. “You don’t belong here, do you?”
He sighed as he wandered back over to the science aisles. As he peeked in he saw that the antagonizing woman from earlier had left. He was glad for that because the last thing he wanted was another confrontation. Another glance at the spine of the book and he moved down the shelf and placed the book once more in its rightful place which was once empty. Unfortunately he was like this when he went into bookstores. Unconsciously he would fixed crooked books or shelve stray ones into their proper areas. His sister used to comment that if he every failed at being a cop, he could be a librarian. This was usually followed by a wrestling match between the two until one cried uncle.
A shake of his head as he made sure the Chemistry book was back in its rightful place and Jorge wandered back into another section for Literature. May be he would get lucky and stumble upon another copy of Henrietta or at least something as equally as tantalizing.
Alexandra sighed happily while watching the man’s reaction. Mission accomplished. There. Perhaps, next time, he wouldn’t disturb other people. Not really interested in what the man did next, Alexandra turned on her heels, heading for the Science books area, checking books as she passed them. Until she’d reached the Science books, she had already picked up Dan Brown’s Lost Symbol although she had a copy back at the Mansion. But she wasn’t sure when she would go to the mansion to retrieve her belongings and Dan Brown’s books where those type of books that she could read a hundred times and still not be bored with it. Looking down at the Lost Symbol’s cover, Alexandra walked around a corner, failing to see that she would bump right into the detective until it was too late. Until her books were laying on the book store’s floor. Angry, she looked down. Then up. A sigh left her lips as the irritated look returned. “You again. Are you trying to ruin any chance of actually buying a book from here?” Shaking her head, she looked back at the books as several have opened during the fall and now had their pages folded in various ways. She just hoped that no permanent damage was done. And she really wished she would have dropped that lamp on his head. With another sigh, Alexandra kneeled down and started to gather her books.

Jorge
Everything was going fine thus far, except the losing of his precious book to another costumer. Whatever the case, Jorge was not going to let this ruin his time off. Instead he simply returned a lost book to its proper place, he already had quite the collection that would serve him well, and he was about to turn to leave. As he walked, he was so engaged with reading the back of the jacket of his own copy of The Faerie Queene that he did not see where he was going. Then…there was the bump.
Startled for a second, Jorge had a better hold on his books as he shot his head up and noticed that there she was again. That woman who had admonished him earlier for talking to himself. Already he could see the irritation on her face, but all he could do was sigh.
Then came the comment.
>> “You again. Are you trying to ruin any chance of actually buying a book from here?”
Jorge sighed once more, noticed the fallen books and knelt to grab one of the books that had skidded a bit farther away than the rest of them. He silently picked it up, then saw the familiar gold lettering of the title…Henrietta. So…she was the one who took it. For a moment Jorge suspected that she had done it out of spite for whatever reason, but then quickly shooed those thoughts away. Who could be that petty and small? Instead he did his best to be civil and gave her at least a warm smile and handed over the fallen book.
“If I am, it is purely unintentional,” he said. He then nodded to the bookshelf he had just came from and to the science book he put back. “I was simply returning a book I found shelved incorrectly.” he then stepped back, his own books held under his arm. “I’m leaving right now, so I won’t be bothering you anymore.” he nodded and then turned to leave.
Some people… was all he thought as he headed to the front counter with his new acquisitions in hand.
Alexandra could almost smile when seeing the man's face when he picked up Henrietta. Yet, she didn't, keeping the smile to herself. Yes, perhaps it was childish what she did but it certainly made her feel better. Gathering the rest of the books, Alexandra stood up, and, when he handed her Henrietta she placed it on top. Where he could see it.
“If I am, it is purely unintentional, I was simply returning a book I found shelved incorrectly."
Alexandra's eyes followed the direction of the nod. Her eyes widened slightly at seeing the book back on the shelf, and, simply forgetting about the man, she let her feet carry her to it. When the book was safely placed on top of the others, Alexandra sighed happily. "And here I wanted to drop a lamp on his head." She said to herself. Perhaps a bit louder than necessary.

Jorge
Jorge had nearly left the shelves. Books in hand, he had just about made the turn to leave for the counter when the woman he left behind him spoke. For a second he could not make out the words because they were so soft. But, as he thought about it for a second, the mind filled in the gaps of what she could have possibly said.
>> “And here I wanted to drop a lamp on his head.”
He paused…thought for a second…then he had to smirk. He would have said something but it was apparent that she was simply talking to herself. The irony made him chuckle. It was this type of thing that got him into this mess in the first place, mumbling to himself a little too loud in a place that advocated quiet and piece. He gave her another look and noticed that she had picked up the book that he had just placed back on the shelf. He guessed maybe that appeased her.
At least her last memory of me won’t be so bad he thought with a chuckle.
With that Jorge turned to get into the line to pay for his items. As it was he found a pretty good collection of items, even if he did not get his coveted Henrietta copy. It would cross his path again later. So, as he checked his books, he rose a brow at the person in front of him in line. They seemed to be purchasing an entire collection of those sickly, tween vampire books. He wanted to shake his head, but who was he to pass judgment on others. Who knows, it might have been a gift for someone else, a gag gift, or any multitude of reasons.
“Like…O-M-G! I LOVE reading about Edmund!” the girl in front of him said to her cohort who giggled intently. “He is SO hot!”
Jorge visibly shuddered and shook his head. He will never understand young people or the things they read.
With the book safe in her hands, Alexandra walked out of the Science books area, as she couldn't carry any more books with her. She paced toward the line, groaning as she noticed just how many people where waiting there. Darn it. She was already late for work. Alexandra exhaled, scanning the crowd, in search of a solution. It was quick to come. And its name was Edward Cullen. Twilight, huh? Apparently the sparkling vampire still made young girl's hormones go crazy. And yes, she had seen the movies too. Made her roll her eyes a lot but hormones weren't bothered.
Alexandra smirked. Then cleared her throat. "OH LOOK! Robert Pattinson is outside!" What happened next was a blur. Alexandra quietly stepped to the side as books flew around, a lot of squealing happened and then a horde of teen females rushed toward the door. She shook her head slightly. They did look dangerous as they fought their way out to the door.
Looking now at the line, Alexandra was happy to observe that only a few persons were left. Poor customers. They looked surprised. Still smirking, she stepped in line, glancing at her watch. It shouldn't take more than five minutes to be out of the store with her precious books in hand.

Jorge
Jorge rolled his eyes as he stared at the line in front of him. Several girls were in line ahead, all giggling and shouting for those Twilight books he could not stand. There was a lot of them and they all seemed to be taking their time in reading the books in line, giggling and shrieking every time they got to certain points in the books they all shared amongst themselves. He really was tempted to just throw himself outside and run all the way home screaming about the madness he had to listen to. Instead he sighed and simply shook his head. He would deal…he had the books he wanted…he just…had…to…make it…
>> "OH LOOK! Robert Pattinson is outside!"
The detective jumped at the sudden shout. He was not normally that jumpy but the shout had come from directly behind him and it was in a sound register that made his teeth cringe. But…there was a reason behind this madness. As he turned to look over his shoulder he saw that the woman whom he had bumped into, twice, with her science books was the one who shouted. He arched a brow in confusion but that was soon remedied.
“O-M-G!!! THERE HE IS! AAHHHH!!!”
A wide-eyed Jorge stepped out the way as a gang of girls all ran towards the exits of the bookstore. Unfortunate circumstances had led a very pale, spiky haired boy to walk by the bookstore at just that same time. He did surprisingly look a little like that vampire kid from the movies. It was not him, the detective could tell that much, but rabid girls don’t always need to look at details. Before he knew it, the flood of them were gone, chasing the young teen boy, screaming for autographs while carrying their “shoplifted” books from the store. They were immediately chased after by a few of the staff members.
Jorge smirked as he glanced to the woman again and gave her an approving nod. He now knew what to do the next time that happened to him.
“NEXT!”
Jorge turned to see that he was indeed next in line. “Sorry,” he said quickly as he set his books down on the counter. The detective then proceeded to pay for his books quickly, took his bag with his new material in hand and sighed contently. Though the book store trip was a little shaky, he found most of what he needed and was thankful.
Once he was done, he dropped a five dollar bill into the tip jar and made his way towards the store. Across the street he could see that girls had corner the boy near a restaurant. He could always intervene. He was an officer after all.
