The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

Emotionally, she tensed up. Physically she did much the same when Kealey called her out on skipping over the surface of what had bothered her. She shifted in her chair.
"I..." Her hands were shaking. Whether from gripping her chair too tightly beneath her or from severe agitation, it was unclear. There was a lot to say so she just sort of opened her jaw and let it all fall out. "I let my husband and my son down when I answered that call. I was stupid. I got angry and I hit a man and I was stupid to think that Romania would be like the American internment camps. It was worse. It was a lot worse. Shin knows how worse, but he didn't see it. He didn't see it, Kealey."
It was guilt. Guilt was shining out through her wet eyes.
"A lot of people died. And I burned their bodies. I helped cover it up. My hands held the pan that caught the blood. I-" She sucked in breath suddenly, but she wasn't crying. It was something worse. Sort of like panic. "I touch Jude with those hands, hold Sebastian... I don't remember... I don't really know what happened when we got out. One minute we're breathing in gas..." She got inhaled herself... unless that was a gas-induced hallucination. And then... she was waking up. And Sebastian was there.
There was a severe lack of resolution that left everything all... open.

Oh my. Kealey didn’t say anything, just sat, and listened, and felt as Ghost spoke. Romania. As soon as she heard the words from the other woman’s mouth, Kealey’s heart went out to her. It hadn’t been that long ago, after a trip to see Maire, that Shin had told her all about it. What he’d told her had been awful. Absolutely awful. So awful that she still had trouble wrapping her mind around how any of them had survived. One thing stuck in her head for sure, she never would have.
Ghost described things, things that apparently Shin didn’t even know. Ghost’s story was one of blood and bodies, and burning. And the guilt…oh the guilt she felt. Kealey’s eyes teared as she continued to listen, wondering what she could possibly do to help.
The story went on, and on, until Kealey wondered how Ghost had made it this long with the obvious burden she was carrying. She’d so very nearly died. Kealey had been horrified when Shin had told her what they’d all been through. This was…in some ways worse. Shin had the constitution for it…and while it was hard for him to talk about, heart-wrenching even…there was something about the way Ghost spoke, and the way Ghost felt, that made Kealey reach out and hug the other woman.
”Oh Maya.” she said, releasing the other woman, ”How do you handle it all?” She paused for a moment, then continued, ”It couldn’t possibly be your fault. Shin told me about it…you did what you had to do to survive. I’ve never been in a situation like that…but I can’t imagine being as strong as you had to have been… You made it back.” her eyes were wet now, tears threatening to spill over.
”How can I help?”she asked, sincerity clear in her voice.
Well it earned her a hug... Maya remained rigid under Kealey's comfort. She didn't go out of her way to touch others. She was okay with it in a trusting situation, but out in the world she kept physical contact to an absolute minimum.
> "How do you handle it all?"
"I don't." She shifted after being set free from Kealey's friendship squeeze. The other woman was crying. Ghost wasn't crying. She was just... upset inside. (And a bit bewildered as to why Kealey was tearing up. She felt bad for making her feel bad. Which of course would only make Kealey feel worse.) "It's my fault for going in the first place. That means that I can't complain about anything after." And there were plenty of people who had complaints.
Eveything boiled down to something angry and confused. She just wasn't entirely sure what was wrong. "I wouldn't want to go back, but I don't like how it ended... it just ended." She was twisting her ring around on her finger. "Does that make sense? One minute gas, the next adoption? One extreme and then the other and now..." And now it was just her every day. "A-and what happened to Alexandra? I know Sam made it back because I've seen him. And Shin... What happened to the people I met and what about the families of... the others?"
It was maybe a little late to be getting all this out, but she didn't really have anybody else to go to.
"Do you know anything about how it all started?" Because Ghost didn't. She should have asked before now, but... well, she should have been doing a lot of things she didn't.

The hug had made Ghost uncomfortable…that hadn’t been Kealey’s intention. She was selfish for a moment though, because the hug hadn’t been completely for the other woman’s benefit. Kealey had needed the comfort too. Ghost was confused though, and Kealey took a deep breath, trying to calm herself down.
”I’m sorry…” she explained when she had the chance, ”I can just feel it all…I’m obviously not as good at handling it as you are.” There was one thing the blond knew and she shook her head at Ghost‘s admission of guilt, ”Things like this aren’t anyone’s fault but the evil people who started it.” Memories came back to Kealey of a ferry, what had Shin said to her, that made it make sense, “All you can do sometimes is your best.” That wasn’t exactly it…not by a long shot, but it was something.
Ghost was angry now, and confused, and Kealey tried to work through it. If this was how she could help Ghost, than this was what was going to happen. The other woman had helped her so much already, it was the least Kealey could do.
Ghost explained the extremes, the emotional roller coaster and Kealey almost explained that she felt that every day. Highs and lows all mixed together, sometimes at the same time. It was hard to deal with, and she’d been doing it for almost a decade. Kealey took a moment and thought back. It was a lot. A whole lot.
Ghost was worried about people, people she hadn’t seen since they’d gotten back. She knew about some of them, about Shin and Sam…they’d all been there. Kealey knew details, more than she’d ever thought she’d want to know about the subject, and when Ghost asked if she knew how it started, she nodded.
”Some…Shin said they were opening camps in Romania like the ones they had here in New York.” Kealey’s eyes dropped slightly and she frowned. She didn’t feel left out…you were only left out of something if you wanted to be there…but she hadn’t been there to help anyone through these things.
”I never knew anything about either of them. By the time I came to the states…the camps were gone…and I didn’t get involved with the X-Men until after Romania. I just know that they were horrible, and you guys were trying to stop them. It was the right thing to do.”
"It's not enough to think it's the right thing. I can't just take orders and then sit here and stew in the aftermath. Somebody tipped Sam off to the bombing, somebody tipped Sebastian and his friends too. Somebody knew the situation and stirred the pot anyway."
She was dissolving into grumpiness now which was a lot more comfortable territory. "And I'd like to meet that somebody and introduce them to my foot."
"I haven't done anything for the X's since besides answering police calls. Well, you know that. Mittens." She was grumpy about that too. Maybe the person she was really needing to talk to was Sam. "I have a son and a husband but that doesn't mean that I'm suddenly more fragile. I would much rather do something."

Kealey frowned at what Ghost said. If people had known the dangers, why had they still put themselves on the line. As she thought it, the thought suddenly seemed a little bit silly.
”Ultimately it worked though…I know it cost a lot…to everyone involved, and it’s easy for me to say it…but stirring the pot worked.” The words tasted bitter, even as she said them, though. How could that be okay? Kealey sighed, ”I wish I was more help.”
Ghost was grumpy now, and uncomfortable with it, and Kealey found herself squirming slightly in her seat. The other woman wanted to find the person who’d known, the person who’d tipped them all off without a thought for what might happen. Kealey thought about the things Shin had told her, and the way he’d felt when he’d told her. That coupled with the way Ghost felt made the blond nod her head in agreement. ”If you ever find them. Let me know.”
Ghost pointed out how few and far between the things she’d been doing for the X’s were and Kealey frowned. Ghost was one of the most senior members of the team. What was the point in sitting her around. Maya pointed out her family and Kealey mmm’d slightly, leaning back in her chair. That was something to consider. Ghost still seemed committed though, and if that was the case…
”You should talk to Sam.” she suggested, ”Though the NYPD does seem to be handling a lot of things lately. They’re everywhere I turn around when I get a call on the X-Com…and with us working so closely with them.” Kealey shrugged.
”I know I’d like having you around more. You’re always so calm and collected. It’s nice to have that to hold on to.”
Stirring the post may have worked, but it should have been handled differently. Of course hindsight was 20/20.
The sylph rubbed her forehead and let out a sort of suppressed and frustrated sigh through her nose. "I'll let you know." Heck. She would take Kealey with her just to be sure they were good and scared... Ghost mentally stepped back a moment and let that thought roll around for a moment. She had surprised herself. Would she really do that to anyone? Even the director of the camps...
> ”You should talk to Sam.”
She sighed again. "You're right." As usual. "And I will. I should have a long time ago, I guess, instead of getting all tangled up about it." Though stewing in her own juices had proved for better brooding.
"I like going on a mission because you have a task, an endgame. Everything else has too much else attached to it. It gets easy to loose track, you know?" She wasn't entirely sure what she was talking about but it had sounded right when it was in her head. "Be sure to call me, if you ever need help out there. I think we work well together anyway."
She pulled the children's book into her lap and fiddled with the pages. Somehow, all this talking and thinking and feeling was exhausting.
