The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

Cookies or brownies? Or maybe a cake? Some pastries perhaps? Andrew had no idea what to bake tonight. On top of that he was getting used to a new kitchen with new appliances. Some ovens heated quicker than others and some didn't cook as evenly as they should. Andrew had yet to run across any such problems in this kitchen but it was still worth noting. The oven he'd used back at the apartment took forever to get hot. Andrew could count on adding at least ten minutes to any recipe's baking time because of the fact that it just didn't heat well.
None of that mattered at the moment since he couldn't decide what to make at all. Tonight's endeavors were destined to be a thank you gift to Kealey for bringing him here and being so easy to talk to. Andrew felt comfortable here and part of that he was sure was because of Kealey. Therefore he wanted to thank her and the best way he knew how to do that would be to bake her something.
However he hadn't purposely baked for anyone else before. He did it to relax when he was anxious. Not only that but Andrew didn't know what she liked as far as baked goods went. He stopped thinking about it for a moment to smell and check on what he did have in the oven. The first thing had been to figure out what this particular oven was like. Therefore he'd made a recipe he knew by heart, cinnamon rolls. They were looking good and smelling even better. He'd already made the glaze that was to go over the top and set it aside, keeping it warm so that it didn't set up before the rolls were done.
Perhaps if this were being done during the day or early morning it might not seem strange. Andrew however had chosen to bake in the middle of the night because he really didn't want anyone knowing about it yet. Even in a place as big as the mansion it had to be safe to bake in the dead of night. Right?

When it came to baked goods, no location was safe, no time of night sacred, and no recipe too much or too little for a late night snack. For those such as Shin, who rarely slept, these Midnight snacks were vital for keeping the energy up. Cakes, cookies, sandwiches, soups... he burned it off. He wasn't flabby. He could handle a hearty snack now and again, during his breaks in studying and practice. It didn't go to any hips, and it certainly didn't weigh him down. Tonight, he needed it. He'd been doing the usual routine.
It was fascinating, and sometimes mind-boggling, how the usual routine worked. Shin studied for college late into the night. He managed a small bit of shut-eye, then walked his dog, got in a small run, ate breakfast, and went to classes or work. When he got home from school or the book store, he worked some more, and then ate and got to more studying. Somewhere in there, there was socializing, Kealey time, and Thor time. Occasionally, there was Shin-time and practice. This daytime routine always ended the same way, by looping to the start. He'd work and work and work, then work, and when he had the time, he'd stay up and work at studying some more. Yesterday, he'd done the bulk of the routine. Today, he was continuing this vicious cycle.
As he walked through the halls for his little snack, he focused on the palm of his hand. His brows were knitted. On the palm, small triangles of mental energy moved, locking together in complex patterns. He had the image in his mind. It was a glove. He'd shown it to Kealey. He still wasn't a master. This was but one instance of practicing in a long line of the stuff. He was lucky he was good at it, and knew the halls like the palm of his hand. Otherwise, he might have stumbled down stairs, or into other peoples' rooms, or even... into the kitchen, where another late-night person was busy with their own work.
Or, wait. What was that last one again? Shin glanced up on entering the kitchen, shard-glove vanishing as his control went slack. Triangular pupils focused on the baker. Shin did something he'd picked up from his girlfriend. He tilted his head.
"Hey there. What are you doing?" He asked with a curious look. To him, it looked like cooking. One never could tell these days, though. The man could have been raising all kinds of hell in that oven... or at least, some yummy cinnamon rolls. Wait, what had he been thinking again? He'd drifted off... because, yum... cinnamon...
He wiped what might have been drool from the corner of his mouth with the back of his right hand.

An assortment of baked goods would work out nicely. That way there was bound to be something Kealey liked and she could share with whoever she wanted. About three different things would do nice, maybe three of each. Now the only question was what to make? Andrew mulled over the various recipes that he knew in an attempt to put together a thank you gift in his head. He knew a fair few bread recipes and several of those were sweet dessert breads. One of those wouldn't be amiss.
Some cookies would do well too if only for the texture change. Andrew wouldn't want everything in the gift to be fluffy and soft. While that was nice it might get boring. To top it off some form of brownie. Now that he'd decided that Andrew could just relax and enjoy his task. At least until a voice sounded at the doorway and he jumped. Who was up at this hour? Andrew glanced over to see who had caught him baking.
"Uh, just waiting on the cinnamon rolls to get done."
That didn't directly implicate Andrew as the baker. He directed his gaze at the oven and then back to the doorway. Was..was he drooling? For a second there, before he wiped the corners of his mouth it had looked like that. Well it was nice to know that his efforts at least smelled good. Andrew hadn't had someone around when he baked since he was a child helping out his mother. As a general he'd only baked in the apartment when his roommates were dead asleep or gone.

"Mmmm... cinnamon rolls..." Shin swayed.
Wait. That... he'd just said that out loud, hadn't he? He must've been sleepy. His judgment was waning. "That is," Shin corrected himself hastily. "They smell good. Who are you making them for?" Can I have one once they're done?
Yeah. He managed to leave that last one out. He did want one, though. He wanted one a lot. "My name's Shin, by the way." With a long 'e' sound, like Sheen. His sleepy accent was just a bit heavier on the Japanese side of things. Usually, he was pretty good about that. Not tonight.

Andrew let the other man finish talking before he even dared to say anything. Shin must have been tired because Andrew figured that a couple of those sentences weren't meant for him to hear. Wait, Shin was the name of Kealey's boyfriend. At least, if he remembered correctly it was. Now he knew who he'd helped pick out that game for, though it might not be a good thing to mention just yet. Andrew wasn't entirely sure that Kealey had given the gift to him yet so no spoilers.
"Um, I'm Andrew and I honestly wasn't baking the cinnamon rolls for anyone. They should be almost done. You can have one once I get them glazed."
Andrew checked on the aforementioned sweets and found out that they were indeed done. One pair of oven mitts and a quick step to the counter and they were ready for glazing. He pulled the glaze over and began pouring it over the cinnamon rolls without even sparing Shin a glance. Right now Andrew was dead to the world so to speak. It would have taken pain or injury to get Andrew to notice Shin's existence. That was just how he was when he baked. Once the last one had glaze dripping down the side Andrew put the bowl down and looked over at Shin.

Mmm, glazed was a good word, like dazed or amazed. Phased? Sugar-crazed. Tazed.
Why had he suddenly imagined someone with a TASER stealing cinnamon rolls? His sleepiness was making him weird.
"Sweet," He said, in an effort to come off wide awake. He walked up to the refrigerator, and popped open the door, hauling out the milk. He spared a few glances towards the dutiful Andrew as he worked. Shin filled a glass with milk. Then, he put it away. He put the gallon of milk away too. Then, he took his glass out again like he'd meant to do that, bead of sweat rolling down the side of his face.
Mmm, milk. And cinnamon rolls. A great combination.
The cinnamon rolls looked great. Shin set his glass of milk down on the table. He walked to the cupboard for a small plate, and picked out a fork, then, he got one roll. He wanted to take more, but he held back. One was plenty to start out. It smelled good, but there was the chance it would eat him. It was a chance he was willing to take once. He'd eat the first one to test the waters before he risked it twice.
He'd already decided he'd risk it twice, regardless of how much the sugar devoured him, but he didn't tell himself that. It was a secret.
Shin cut out a piece and speared it, bring it to his mouth. He ate the cinnamon roll, and was absorbed by an 'mmmmm'. He looked to Andrew appreciatively. "Sho good... bet Kealey'd love deez..." Maybe he'd make her some tasty treats some time soon? Maybe if he found the time to sleep first. He didn't want to risk making all-consuming baked goods on low sleep. Not again.

Somehow Andrew became a little nervous before Shin took his first bite and pronounced them good. Just like how he hadn't baked for anyone before he tried not to be around when they ate his baking. That way he could cheerfully believe any lies they wanted to tell about his baking being good. Mind you this wasn't nervous as if someone had just held a gun to his head but still. Even better, he said Kealey would love them! That made his task easier.
"Really? I'm glad they are good."
Andrew picked up the items he'd used in the creation of the cinnamon rolls and got to washing and drying them. He'd need pretty much all of it for his next batch of...well whatever they were going to be. Maybe he could ask Shin what to bake for Kealey? He'd probably know what she liked better than Andrew did. That might get awkward quick if he didn't explain. Explain first ask after? It was either that or risk having his baking passed off to someone else or thrown in the trash. And yet any way he could think of asking sounded really weird.
The dishes were soon scrubbed up and left to drip dry. Once Andrew had sorted out what he was going to bake next he'd dry them off with a towel or something. That brought him back to the problem of what to make and that of course eventually led him right back to the guy sitting at the table devouring one of his cinnamon rolls. Ok devouring might not be the right word. Bah, who cared what word he'd used. Not like there was a telepath around at the moment. That he knew of. No need to freak yourself out Andrew. Just suck it up and ask the man.
"So what would you suggest baking for Kealey as a thank you gift? Since she brought me here and all and was so nice about everything."
Time to stop talking before talking turned to babbling.

Shin looked up from the last bite of cinnamon roll at the baker. "So, you were baking something for someone?" He asked innocuously. Or rather, he'd been planning to. And it was Kealey. Shin bowed his head for a moment, and chuckled knowingly to himself. "I see, I see. I was actually going to ask you to help me bake something for her. You're such a good baker. This works out nicely." Just as planned.
Was he coming off less sluggish now? It must've been something Andrew had said. Suddenly, he was wide awake.
Shin moved the little plate he'd rested his cinnamon roll on from the table, over to the sink. He eyed Andrew. "She likes German Chocolate cake," He said honestly. "And cheesecake brownies. If you're making her something, I definitely want to help. Only the best for her, you know?" He smiled to himself, and turned his attention to washing off his dish in the sink.

Andrew was inclined to smile. He'd thought it would be awkward to have someone else around him when he was baking. Normally it might have been. Rather, had it been anyone but a mutant from the mansion and had he been baking someplace aside from the mansion it Andrew figured it would have been a lot more awkward. This place, especially this kitchen, had a calming effect on him.
"Why don't we make both then? You can give her the cake and I'll give her the brownies."
It was fortunate that Andrew knew how to make both items. He pulled together the ingredients for both confections from memory. They'd end up taking around the same amount of baking time so it wouldn't be too hard to get them pulled together and make a frosting for the cake while the cake and the brownies were baking. This kitchen was about to smell delicious. Well, even more delicious.
"So which do you want to put together first? They'll go in the oven at the same time and we can make a frosting for the cake while they bake."
Sharing his domain wasn't half bad, all things considered.

"The cheesecake brownies," Shin replied confidently, without hesitation. He remembered. Kealey loved them. They'd both loved them, the night they'd... hmm. A thought had struck him. He suddenly remembered where he'd learned she loved those brownies.
It had been when Kealey and Aurum and him had gone out drinking. They'd had too much. He'd needed it. That had been the night he'd broken up with Kasumi, and... come to think of it...
Interesting...
That had been the first time he'd... slept with Kealey.
Shin fell silent while Andrew got to work making the baked goods. That was a strange thought. When it had happened, he'd been startled, serious... maybe, afraid? Nothing had happened. It had just been... what was a good term to describe it?
Platonic sharing of warmth.
It hadn't been the world's worst cuddle. Warm, comfortable... everything he knew to expect from Kealey, now. When he'd woken up then, he'd fled from it. Now, how did he feel about it, after he'd... "Y-yeah," Shin coughed into his fist, shoving himself back to the subject at-hand. There was no need to stray. "Definitely cheesecake brownies. She loves those." He said quickly.
Definitely.
Shin shook off fluttery feelings, and filed something away on his schedule for later.

Shin told Andrew which item to start with and he got to work. Andrew zoned out like he always did when he baked. Well, maybe zoned out wasn't the right word. It was a similar experience but baking was more like meditation to Andrew than just straight up zoning out. It put his mind to rest so he could just exist for a while. It had done the same for his mother and she'd shared that with him as a child. Aside from calming his mind and thoughts baking put him in touch with that simple happiness.
He lost track of time and before Andrew knew it he was coming back to reality after having put the two baked goods into the oven. Had Shin spoken? Andrew didn't know if he had or he hadn't. He had to think about it for a minute before he realized that yes Shin had spoken but it wasn't anything that Andrew needed to reply to. Andrew lost himself again just long enough to put together the icing for the cake.
Now he was at a loss. The brownies and cake were baking and the icing was made. There wasn't anything else to do for about forty minutes or so. What did one do in the middle of the night with the boyfriend of the girl you just made confections for? Andrew washed up everything, including Shin's plate and such, and then headed for the table.
"We've got forty minutes before we need to check on them."
He'd set the timer when he'd put them in the oven so they wouldn't accidentally leave them in too long. So again, now what?

Oh bother, had he zoned out while the guy was cooking for him? He hadn't done much to help... he'd just stood there, looking pretty. Well, that wouldn't do. Now they had forty minutes to kill, and no baking to keep them busy.
Well, he supposed they could talk. But what to talk about? Andrew had said Kealey'd brought him here. Heh, did that mean she'd helped with his job, getting the man situated at the mansion? That had been nice of her.
Once again, he noted, Best. Girlfriend. Ever.
"So, uh... what do you do?" Shin started conversationally. He was a mutant. Kealey'd brought him to the mansion, hadn't she? So, what did he do?

Andrew blinked at the question that Shin posed. What did he do? Did he mean as a job or for his mutation? It could be either. That same old surge of paranoia rose up at the thought and Andrew squashed it down. The man was Kealey's boyfriend and a mansion resident. Yeah he didn't know him but Kealey would have better judgment than to date someone that would take advantage of his mutation. Andrew decided that he'd meant mutation and answered accordingly.
"I make promises. If I break them I get hurt."
One power description, the super short version, given.
"What about you?"
Andrew was curious about Shin. It wasn't every day an Asian guy walked in on you baking in the middle of the night and asked you to bake something for his girlfriend. One more for the book of strange experiences brought on by mutants.

Andrew had an interesting mutation. He made promises, and if he broke them, he got hurt? It was self-destruction at its best. Where was the positive? He tilted his head curiously.
Maybe it forced the man to keep his word?
Andrew turned the question back on him before Shin could ask more about the man's power. Shin paused, and looked at Andrew thoughtfully. "Would you like the long version, or the short one?"

Yup, Shin was likely curious about Andrew's mutation. Most people were. It wasn't every day that you ran across a mutation with zero upsides to it. Andrew had begun to learn that most mutants were used to getting something from stuff they were forced to endure. Good for them.
"Well...it's not like we're going anywhere. Long version. I'll fill in any blanks you might have about my power afterward."
