The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

Obviously struggling with her map, Haylee dispiritedly wandered the halls of the second floor of the mansion. She was searching for her assigned room, a search that was clearly in vain. Taking a break, she leaned against one of the wall-papered walls and tried to make sense of the mansion map she had received again. The school was huge, and she had spent the past twenty minutes sauntering through the corridors like an idiot. After pinpointing where she was on the map–somewhere in hallway two–she started walking in what she hoped was the right direction.
“This is insane,” the brunette muttered, “How many kids exactly even go to this school?” She had seen a few students in rooms she had passed and a few walking around the hallways, but they had done their best to avoid her once they saw the snarl on her face. She couldn’t help it if she was a tad touchy today. Wait, wait you have to put your happy face on, she thought as she remembered that she was assigned to a roommate. As grouchy as she was, the teen knew that she didn’t want to start off on the wrong foot with someone she would be living with for a year. She glanced at the index card with her room information on it. She would be rooming with a girl named Elizabeth. Elizabeth Sundance. There wasn’t any other information, other than the fact that the girl owned a parrot. A parrot? Didn’t those things keep people up all night?
After a few more minutes of looking, she finally found a pattern of room numbers that matched her own. Finally…now if I just follow this… And aha! The girl was finally, after half an hour of hunting, at the door to her room. Hopefully her bags had already arrived before her, although considering how long she had taken looking for the room, she was pretty sure they had.
“Okay, so do I knock or just go in…?” Shaking off the apprehension, she grabbed the doorknob and opened the door a crack, peering her head in first. “Hello? I’m Haylee, your new roommate.”

Elizabeth sat on her neatly-made bed, wondering at the suitcases and bags stacked on the bed on the other side of the room. “What do you think, Nico?” she addressed her bird, “I’m thinking…moderately rich girl with an extensive wardrobe and is coming here because her eccentric parents thought boarding school would be a great experience for her. And her powers, um, she can turn into a giant butterfly. How’s that sound to you?”
“Chocolate!” the parrot squawked, flapping off Elizabeth’s desk to land on her arm. Liz laughed and fell back on her bed, stroking the red and grey bird with her other hand. Ever since Liz had taught him that word, he always wanted to use it, even though she knew for a fact that he recognized and knew dozens of other words. African grey parrots were smart enough for that, and Liz suspected that was the precise reason Nico never used his vocabulary. “I love you Nico,” Beth confessed with a light laugh.
The girl remained on her back with her pet on her raised arm, both content without doing much of anything. Then the door cracked open and Liz saw a face poke in.
She smiled at the girl and sat up, slightly disrupting Nico’s perch. “Hello there, Haylee. I’m Elizabeth Sundance,” she said cheerily. “And this here is Nico.” She lifted her left arm up, in case Haylee had somehow missed the parrot. “So I guess we’re going to be roommates, huh? Neat!” Elizabeth was happy to finally meet her roommate. She’d figured she’d be getting one, but she hadn’t known when until just awhile ago when the suitcases arrived.
The brunette was immediately greeted by a smiling face and a rather large, gray parrot. She let in the rest of her body while appraising the moderately-sized room. It was quite spacious for a dorm room, and she noticed that her new roommate’s side of the room was pretty clean. On her side, there was a multitude of bags piled high on her bed, and she cringed inwardly. Stacking them that way made them all look larger, and made her look more spoiled. It was going to be a pain to unpack everything.
>>>“Hello there, Haylee. I’m Elizabeth Sundance. And this here is Nico.”
“Nice to meet you Elizabeth, and hey there, Nico,” the girl replied, putting a smile on even though she wasn’t very sure about the parrot. Are we even allowed to bring pets in here…? She thought with slight irritation. Pushing thoughts of parrots aside, she evaluated the girl in front of her. She looked younger than Haylee, and had a natural kind of beauty in her face. And she seemed pretty nice, if not outstandingly cheerful.
>>>“So I guess we’re going to be roommates, huh? Neat!”
Oh yes, so very cheerful. Almost a little too cheerful. The teen tried to mirror Elizabeth’s enthusiasm, but found it impossible for her to smile that wide. “So what year are you? I’m going to be in twelfth.” Haylee asked as she started moving her (many) bags to the floor.

Nico puffed himself up as if he knew Haylee was talking to him when she greeted him, which he probably did. Liz glanced at her parrot for a moment and let some emotions seep into her. Yep, that’s what she thought. The bird was happy and it was catchy. Nico’s attitude bolstered Elizabeth’s own chipper spirit. Which looked to be a bit contrasting to her new roommate’s. Not much, just the girl didn’t look as happy as Beth felt. She shrugged to herself.
“So what year are you? I’m going to be in twelfth.”
A senior? Liz suddenly felt young. But not by much. “I’m going to be in tenth grade. It’ll be weird, going to school at the same place you live,” she babbled, honestly not knowing why. She normally didn’t talk as much. She was always polite and answered questions fully, but she normally didn’t volunteer much miscellaneous information like that. Maybe I’ve been nipping at Nico’s emotions too much. I should lay off awhile before I start talking like him and trying to fly down the halls.
She cut the river of emotions flowing from Nico off and shifted the guy to her other arm. He didn’t like that perch and flapped off her arm to land on the empty dresser on Haylee’s side of the room. He didn’t use Elizabeth’s own dresser because it was currently occupied by his cage. He couldn’t go free all the time, and she didn’t want him relieving himself all over the room either. Watching Haylee move her belongings while only occasionally glancing at Nico, Liz asked, “Do you need help with any of that?” She always liked helping people out; it made her feel good. Besides, it was a pretty good idea to get off on the right foot when making first impressions.
>>>“I’m going to be in tenth grade. It’ll be weird, going to school at the same place you live.”
“Yeah it is. I’m going to assume this is your first boarding school, then? It’s mine too,” Haylee replied with a light chuckle. She could take a roommate who was a little talkative. If anything it made things less awkward. The younger girl seemed attached to her parrot, who stayed perched on her arm until she tried to move him to the other one. The brunette narrowed her eyes as the bird flew over to her side of the room, on her dresser. Um…can someone get that bird off?
>>>“Do you need help with any of that?”
“Huh? Oh no it’s fine. I’m just getting all of this off the bed for now. Unpacking is where the real problem’s going to start,” she replied, making a not-so-subtle gesture towards the Nico-occupied dresser. It suddenly occurred to the teen to inquire about Elizabeth’s mutation. That was why she was here, wasn’t it? Wait, so how does one even ask that? “Uh, so… what’s your mutation?” Haylee asked, not exactly sure how to go about these things, “I’m a walking thermostat, if that makes any sense.” She grinned, trying to cover up the way she had uneasily asked her question. Hopefully her new roommate was equally as new to this as she was.
The girl ran a hand through her long hair, removing the last of her things and falling down in a collapsing heap onto her new bed. She was actually going to be living here, this was her actual bed. It was strange to wrap her head around it.

Liz nodded and smiled at Haylee’s assumption. Yes, this was very first boarding school. It was also her first private school. She’d only gone to local public schools back in New Jersey. Which made settling down at the Institute a bit challenging for her, especially since she wasn’t a very outgoing person when it came to people. That is why she’d snuck out a few fateful times and had chosen to retreat to her room on occasions after her visit to the movies and her walk in the park. Yes, her room was much safer for her than the rest of New York.
Haylee declined her offer to help her, but she did show her view towards Nico sitting on her dresser. “Sorry ‘bout that,” Liz said as she got up to manually remove her bird. Nico was smart enough to understand verbal commands, but he was also mischievous enough to completely ignore them when he wanted. Thus far, he hadn’t been able to ignore physical demands like Liz picking him up and moving him to perch on his cage. “Stay,” she said, staring directly into Nico’s eyes and directing a small bit of happiness into the parrot. Hopefully he’d associate happiness with staying still, making him more apt to do so.
“Uh, so… what’s your mutation? I’m a walking thermostat, if that makes any sense.”
It was funny, at a normal school, people always asked what your parents did, or what your favorite music was, or stuff like that. At the mansion, it was always “What can you do? What’s your power?” Liz didn’t mind it, she just thought it was funny. “I can sense and control the emotions of animals. I can take over an animal’s mind and body via physical contact,” she said with a hint of pride and a bit of shame at how weak her abilities were. Like what can animals do? So far, excepting her influence over Nico, her powers hadn’t helped so far. They normally seemed to make matters worse, actually.
She turned her attention back to Haylee. “So does that mean you can control the temperature around you? And freeze stuff or make them hot?” That sounded like a really cool and useful power. Air conditioner broken on a hot summer day? No problem! Just lower the temperature yourself! Snow days freezing you to the bone? Easy! Just make the air inside feel like a sauna! Liz was liking her roommate even more, imagining all the possibilities and benefits that could spring from her.
Haylee watched from the corner of her eye as Elizabeth went up to her dresser and picked the gray parrot of its perch. She hoped she didn’t seem like a bird-hater or anything, she just wasn’t…comfortable being around them. One time when she was an elementary-school student, her neighbor let her over to see his pet parakeet. Well, the parakeet decided that it wanted to take a taste of the young girl’s flesh, and decidedly bit her square on the nose, hard. Needless to say, she had been wary of birds ever since.
It was a little odd, seeing the relationship between pet and owner. Not odd in a bad way, just odd in a different way. It was almost as if they had a telepathic bond and Elizabeth was wordlessly telling her bird to calm down.
>>>“I can sense and control the emotions of animals. I can take over an animal’s mind and body via physical contact.”
Ah, that explains the bond. “That’s really cool,” the brunette replied, not actually knowing what to think of it. She didn’t really know if she was supposed to be proud or scared or indifferent about mutants, and her own mutation. “So does that mean you can talk to them, or just understand how they feel?” So she was just a tad curious, could you blame her? Frankly, talking to animals would be pretty exciting.
>>>“So does that mean you can control the temperature around you? And freeze stuff or make them hot?”
Haylee frowned slightly. Her roommate actually seemed to take an interest in her power, even though Elizabeth’s was so much more fascinating. “Well, not exactly. It’s more of an internal thing, inside the body. I can’t do much for the outside environment. Otherwise…I don’t really know what to tell you.” Perhaps it was time she actually started reading those books that counselor had gotten her on biology and thermoregulation. She didn’t like being clueless about her mutation, regardless of how she felt about it.

“That’s really cool. So does that mean you can talk to them, or just understand how they feel?”
A sheepish expression crossed over Elizabeth’s face when she heard the compliment. “Actually, it’s not really that awesome. I can only understand how animals feel. I can’t communicate with them any better than you can. It’s more of a hassle than a gift, because I’m constantly harassed by feelings that aren’t my own and I lose control easy,” Liz explained, trying to give Haylee a sense of how problematic her powers were. Not to mention how pathetic they were. Seriously, how could influencing what an animal feels help anything? Besides landing her a decent job in a circus or something. And possessing an animal? Hah, yeah right.
“Well, not exactly. It’s more of an internal thing, inside the body. I can’t do much for the outside environment. Otherwise…I don’t really know what to tell you.”
“Well, that’s still pretty nifty,” Liz said, preferring to shift the conversation from her abilities to Haylee’s ability. The older teen’s power seemed much cooler. Did that mean the girl could freeze herself or make herself hotter? She voiced her thoughts. “So, you can control your own temperature. Radical!” Dreams and visions of perfect temperatures year-round vanished, only to be replaced by thoughts of running around in the snow in shorts and a tank-top. Or randomly wearing a parka in the middle of July. A corner of her mouth turned up at the thought.
The blonde watched Haylee messing around. Another question came to mind. “So where you from?” Liz asked. “I’m from Jersey City myself.” My! She was talkative today! I blame you, she thought, trying her hardest to spontaneously develop telepathy so she could send the thought to Nico. She needed to get a turtle or something, some type of animal that had a very mellow personality and would not make her inclined to spout off everything that came to the top of her head.
>>>“Actually, it’s not really that awesome. I can only understand how animals feel. I can’t communicate with them any better than you can. It’s more of a hassle than a gift, because I’m constantly harassed by feelings that aren’t my own and I lose control easy.”
The older girl nodded her head, understanding the general gist of Elizabeth’s explanation. She had to admit, she was a little let down when her roommate said she couldn’t talk to animals. It would have been interesting, to say the least. “When did you first find out you were a mutant…?” It sounded as if she had just found out, like Haylee had, from her lack of control.
>>>“So, you can control your own temperature. Radical!”
And here we go with the cheery, again, the brunette thought as her eyebrows shot up a little. Her mutation really wasn’t that interesting…a nice perk maybe, but not much else. “Uh, it’s really not that great. Honestly,” Haylee answered while pulling herself up into a sitting position, “And I hardly even know that much about what I can do, just surface facts. I haven’t really had time to experiment or anything.” Did she even want to? She hadn’t exactly come to the school with a “ooh, I want to learn more about my ‘special powers’” kind of mindset.
>> “So where you from? I’m from Jersey City myself.”
“I’m from Chicago. Well, from the suburbs really, but most people haven’t heard about those,” the teen replied, pleased with how outgoing her roommate was. Sure, she talked a bit much, but Haylee would prefer that over a quiet, mousy girl any day.

Well, that was a bummer that Haylee didn’t really know much about her powers. And then the ball got dropped back in her court again. When did I first find out that I was a mutant? Lovely. As much as she’d rather forgetting the whole incident, she knew it was burned into her memory for all time. Too many things had happened then, each one changing her life. She paused for a few seconds, trying to figure out how to begin and how to say all the important stuff while leaving out the more painful stuff.
“Well,” she began, “I came home one day and my parents told me some terrible news.” A tear threatened to well up in her eyes so she moved on, banishing the thought of the news. “It was horrible so I locked myself in my room and cried. Hours later, I think, I was just petting and holding my cat when I suddenly transferred my consciousness to him. And now my cat hates me.” She paused for affect and then smiled. “What’s your origin story?” Her smile was forced, as well as her expression. She didn’t bounce back from that memory very well.
“I’m from Chicago. Well, from the suburbs really, but most people haven’t heard about those.”
“I didn’t know Chicago had suburbs. I always thought it was giant buildings, active crime scene, and a fast-paced life. Kinda like New York, really,” Liz wondered, conveniently having something else to do than remember. So far, her experiences hadn’t proved her wrong. There were definitely tall buildings, days did whiz by, and she’d seen her unfair share of the criminal element. “Which is why I’m starting to like staying at the mansion.”
>>>“I came home one day and my parents told me some terrible news. It was horrible so I locked myself in my room and cried. Hours later, I think, I was just petting and holding my cat when I suddenly transferred my consciousness to him. And now my cat hates me.”
One glimpse of Elizabeth’s eyes made the older girl regret asking her anything. Of course there would be other mutants with sad mutant beginning stories! She mentally kicked herself for being so careless and unthinking, and helplessly watched her roommate’s eyes grow misty, saddened by whatever memory she had been forced to conjure up. “I’m so sorry. It must have been such a horrible time for you to discover your mutation.” She could only guess what the “terrible news” was, but she assumed it had something to do with a loss.
>>>“What’s your origin story?”
Ah, she should’ve expected the question to be redirected at her. She should have been prepared to face the consequences of her curiosity. No matter what she should’ve been, the girl was still completely taken aback when she got asked the question. It took her a few seconds to recover her composure and plan exactly what she was going to say before she opened her mouth to respond. Unfortunately, her answer was going to be just as painful to utter as Elizabeth’s, and not as concise.
“Well, I thought I was going crazy when I started seeing all these people with thermometers in their brains. It didn’t help that I saw them all multi-colored like I was using infrared vision, either. So I panicked and went to see a school counselor for help; turns out I went to the one who was secretly a mutant. Weird coincidence, right?” She paused, readying herself for the painful part of her tale, “The counselor confirmed that I was a mutant, which thoroughly freaked me out. My school doesn’t have a high tolerance for mutants, you see, so I really didn’t know much about them. Aside from negative things, that is. I ran out terrified and told the only person I thought I could trust, my best friend. Well, I guess she’s my former best friend now…” Haylee cleared her throat and tried to stop her hands from shaking, “Long story short, she told everyone and I became the school pariah.”
She took a deep breath when she finished her story, stuffing her hands in her pockets to try and mask their convulsing. She was normally an honest girl, but in this case she didn’t mind sugar-coating the truth a little. Telling it in this lighter way almost made her believe things didn’t happen as badly as they did. There was a lot she left out too, but the brunette hadn’t exactly known her story-swapping companion for that long.
>>>“I didn’t know Chicago had suburbs. I always thought it was giant buildings, active crime scene, and a fast-paced life. Kinda like New York, really.”
Haylee was relieved when her roommate lightened the mood with her curious comment about Chicago. “Hah, I get that a lot, actually. The city might be a little crazy, but the suburbs are pretty calm and boring. New York is probably infinitely crazier than Chicago is.”

Liz bit back a comment. No, she was not going to go on a tirade about her experiences. For one, she didn’t want to remember them. The people, yeah, but not the things themselves. For another thought that there had been enough doom and gloom. Mental Note: Remind me to not talk about my past or ask about hers. Either one will only turn out bad. “I’ll bet,” was all the blonde said in return to the New York comment.
Liz was still left curious about the girl. She wanted to know more about her. But none of the questions she could think of were “safe” questions. They all had something to do with the past or things that could potentially lead down painful thoughts. Establishing a short connection with Nico and allowing his upbeat attitude to buffer her weaker spirit, Elizabeth’s smile became more real as happiness filled her. But she still didn’t know what to say. She glanced out the window for some inspiration, hoping that Carrick would fly by or something that could spark a conversation. One that didn’t involve memories.
Then Nico said, “Chocolate! Squa-a-awk!” Liz laughed. She’d taught him to say “Squawk”, thinking that every self-respecting parrot ought to know that word. “What do you think?” she asked Haylee as the bird hopped and glided toward her outstretched arm. “Why don’t we head down to the kitchen and see if we can rustle up something chocolate? I think there’s some Oreos in one of the cabinets. I tend to hoard some whenever we get a new package.” She looked up at the older girl, watching for a “Yay” or “Nay”.
She could sense that her roommate still had things she wanted to ask her, and she admittedly still had things she wanted to ask her roommate. These were dangerous waters to tread though, as any simple question could lead to a depressing, past-filled answer. She watched as Elizabeth seemed to grow happier, her smile starting to glow with more and more sincerity. Haylee followed her eyes to Nico, and then understood what was happening. Ah, she can connect with her bird and soak up some happy… She thought with a little envy, I want to get some happy…
>>>“Why don’t we head down to the kitchen and see if we can rustle up something chocolate? I think there’s some Oreos in one of the cabinets. I tend to hoard some whenever we get a new package.”
Aha! Chocolate was another good method for getting happy. “Hah, I’m going to guess those kinds of things tend to get eaten through pretty fast?” The teen replied with a light chuckle, “Then we better grab some before everyone else does. And save a bit for Nico too.” The older girl uncrossed her legs and hopped off her bed (which was surprisingly comfier than expected), stretching her arms as her head adjusted to getting up so quickly. “Please lead the way.”

Liz smiled. Haylee was a girl after her own heart. But then again, it was chocolate! Everyone loved chocolate! She could see the effect the announcement had on the older girl and Liz mirrored her laugh. “Yeah, they’re usually gone in a day. They’re reeeally popular,” she explained. Nico flapped his wings at his name, but he wouldn’t be getting any chocolate, as much as he loved using the word. Chocolate was poisonous to African Grey Parrots.
She grabbed a short leash off her desk and attached one end to Nico’s foot and the other end to her wrist. This was their preferred method of traveling, since Nico didn’t have his wings clipped or liked staying in the same room all day. And it allowed them both to kind of do their own thing, since the leash was about four feet long. She was ready to leave and take the bird with her. Haylee asked her to lead the way and Liz, ever the gracious host, accepted with a bow and exited the room.
She took the hallways at a decent pace, not very fast in case Haylee was exhausted or wanted to look around, but not so slow that Nico could walk there faster than them. She periodically made sure that Haylee was keeping up and gave occasional summaries of some of the rooms she passed, mentioning who lived in them (the ones she knew, anyways).
They eventually made it to the kitchen, Liz surprising herself that she didn’t get lost. She still tended to do that for some of the less well-known areas and usually resorted to asking another student for help. She quickly located her secret stash of Oreos, neatly tucked away in one of the cabinets, hidden behind some old bottles of vinegar, under a blue plastic measuring cup, inside a sealed plastic baggie. She retrieved her hidden treasures and held the half-full bag out to her roommate, a mischievous grin on her face. “Enjoy!”
It was kind of funny, seeing the gray parrot on a leash, walking around like any other leashed pet. He didn’t seem to make any effort to fly away. Haylee listened as her new guide explained who lived in some of the rooms they passed on their trek through the hallways, and she realized that a lot more kids went to the school than she thought. She tried to memorize the way they were going, remembering how she had gotten lost earlier. Knowing the way to the kitchen was probably good information to have.
“How are the other students here?” She asked as the two (well three, if you count the bird) rounded a corner and arrived at their destination. The older girl observed her roommate retrieve her stash of Oreos from its elaborate hiding spot, an amused expression on her face. She already saw a bright future with Elizabeth, one filled with hidden Oreos and late-night girl talk. “Shall I grab some milk to accompany those Oreos?” She asked with a grin, moving towards the steel refrigerator door. “Let’s hope no one comes in and spies us eating these little delicacies.”
