The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

"It isn't like that doc, and thanks for the vote of confidence there! For the youngn's girls are on the right, guys on the left. Us big people get to sleep in the middle though." Elli got a flash of green in Cafas' eyes again before the joke took over and they went yellow. Elli couldn't imagine what it would be like to have her emotions displayed plain as day on her face. But then again, they often were anyways.
"Us big people, huh? Sounds fun." Cafas led her down the hall, and eventually they reached his room. When Elli saw in the door, she noticed the room was... Disorganized? That was putting it mildly, but Elli didn't really expect much better from a guy. It was in their genes to be messy.
"Don't mind the mess, my roommate seems to have taken the liberty of not cleaning up after himself, not that he's ever around for too long at a time"
Ah, blame the roomie. Might even be true, Elli hadn't met this roommate of Cafas'. And, seeing as the bed that Cafas wasn't sitting on was much messier than his, and indeed almost unsit-on-able, it could entirely be his roommate.
"We also get a decent sized bathroom and laundry, which, as you may have guessed, are due to be used, the laundry by me, and the bathroom by my grubby friend. Feel free to hi-jack the other bed, although watch out for junk an' stuff."
Elli smiled, a little awkwardly, and sat down on Cafas' bed, about 1-2 feet away from him. "Mind if I sit here?" A little belatedly, Elli thought that maybe he didn't want to sit next to her...
Cafas felt the bed sag a little before Elli spoke. He felt his smile broaden and was thankful he had decided to throw everything onto Calley's largely unused bed. He looked up from his splayed out position, rather diagonal now that he observed it, and nodded to Elli. "That's fine. Gimme a sec while I open a window, it's very... stale in here." By stale he meant it smelled like a guy lived in it and by very he meant beyond a joke. He stood and pried open the never before used window. A nice breeze flowed in, nothing like the strong wind on the other side of the tree line. It was a little chilly, but not too bad, the heating seemed to counteract that by blowing hot air out faster. All was well.
'Do I sit next to her or on the other bed... Well she sat next to me, so fair's fair.'
Cafas plonked himself down on the bed again, this time sitting up, about a foot from the girl. He hoped he wouldn't make her uncomfortable, which was always a possibility. Chat could help ease that though. "So have you been laying off the drink? It seems to hit you pretty hard and fast. Sorry about that, I kinda assumed you had noticed." He looked down at his lap, breaking any eye contact, adopting a face of shame which was well deserved. Very well. He still had it in his mind that he owed her for that big time. Though how he could repay her was beyond him.
'I have no money, barely any skills that would be useful to her and I'm no good with the whole not screwing things up thing.'
Pessimism was not Cafas' strong suit however, so he decided to try. "If there's anything I can do to repay you for that lemme know yeah?" The bed seemed to be forming a dent between them and he could feel himself sliding closer as the covers decided they didn't particularly care who was uncomfortable with what. He couldn't shift further out either, partly cos he knew it would do him no good, but mostly because he was quite happy to be close to nice girls. His eyes did wouldn't even change to hint any difference, because they were already yellow.
'You sir, are behaving childishly, just like every other time you come near an attractive girl, you either show off or get stupid.'
"That's fine. Gimme a sec while I open a window, it's very... stale in here."
Stale. That was one way to put that it smelled like a guy lived there. And lived there, not just slept.
"So have you been laying off the drink? It seems to hit you pretty hard and fast. Sorry about that, I kinda assumed you had noticed."
Elli sighed, and attempted to keep the smile on her face, though it undoubtedly wavered, at least. She had feared this would happen. She had wanted to just let go and forget about the whole thing, but it was inevitable that he would bring it up. "Yeah, I've stayed away."
"If there's anything I can do to repay you for that lemme know yeah?"
And now Elli was confused. Cafas somehow managed to feel responsible for that night. Well, it was kindof his fault, a bit, but really Elli only had herself to blame. She had just not been paying as much attention as she should have, and she had payed for it. Cafas had just been kind enough to help her out in a situation, and that was part of what she liked about him. "No, no, it wasn't your fault. I should have just payed more attention to my surroundings." Elli smiled, and looked away from Cafas for a bit, staring at the door. "In fact, I... I um..." Elli petered off as she felt Cafas sliding closer.
She also noticed that she was sliding inwards, towards Cafas, and realized that the bed was sagging. What a nasty little predicament. Cafas seemed like he hadn't noticed, and to move would just bring his attention to it and probably be at least a bit embarrassing. Along with the fact that even if she tried to move she wasn't likely to succeed. She knew how those irritating bed-traps worked. So she was forced, on pain of awkwardness, to try and ignore that their bare legs were now in contact with eachother.
"In fact," Elli said, resuming where she had left off, "I feel like I owe you some. You did carry me home, and stayed all night when I'm sure you had much funner things to do." Elli laid her hand on Cafas' leg, just above the knee and on his shorts, in a friendly manner. "I never did say thank you." She moved her hand back to her lap, but the contact lasted just a little.. too... long....
Cafas shook his head. "Nah, you don't owe me anything for that, that was an obligation really. You never leave anyone for dead where I come from. But I still don't feel right about the whole you getting drunk because of me thing." He shut up pretty quick. A friendly gesture had been what the hand had started as, but it seemed a bit prolonged. Now he was puzzled. Brown and pink. He looked at Elli, shook his head again and tried to pretend he hadn't noticed. The train of thought he was on was not a healthy one. His brain opted to do the obvious thing and not notice. Then he felt happiness come back and he knew something hormonal was up. "Look, I dunno how to approach this, but, uh, do you, uh, like me?"
'Abort abort abort, mayday mayday, we have an emergency in sector shut the f*** up'
Alchemists' mind was working to regain control of his voice while his body worked on not doing anything else stupid. meanwhile in the logic department they were frantically working to come up with a solution to the problem. His ambiguity was what they went for, but the battle for vocal cords was still waging. By the time it had been resolved in the brain's victory, the situation had already gone on too long for repair. The choices were weather the storm or cancel operation "Make an actual friend." He took the first one, he had a feeling it wouldn't be too bad. Meanwhile said blush was returning, as, for yet another trip through the eye colour spectrum, were his green and pink eyes.
'Ladies and gentlemen, please report to your defensive stations, we are about to have a siege waged against us. I wish you all good luck.'
"Nah, you don't owe me anything for that, that was an obligation really. You never leave anyone for dead where I come from. But I still don't feel right about the whole you getting drunk because of me thing."
Elli smiled, and nodded politely. She still didn't really agree with him, but whatever. God I am so out of my depth here... Elli really was. Her last experience with any guy, at all, had led to her complete public humiliation. She was so confused, and wasn't even sure if she wanted a friend, now that she came to think of it. Too late, Elli, you dug yourself into this one.
"Look, I dunno how to approach this, but, uh, do you, uh, like me?" And, lo and behold, the green and pink eyes were back. Oh, and Elli had managed to screw that up as well.
Elli blinked, and then rose abruptly from the bed, and paced the room in front of Cafas, her hands nervously smoothing down her dress, and then pushing back her hair, and then twisting the ring, and then the hair again. It was obvious she had no clue how to respond, and was wracking her brain for what she wanted to say. Elli stopped, and looked at Cafas.
"Honestly, Cafas.. I. I-I don't know... I." Elli stopped, thought God I screwed this up, and continued. "I think, maybe.. But I don't know if.. If i'm quite ready for.. for more.. for anything, really..." Elli sighed explosivly, and then plopped down on the bed next to Cafas again. She took his left hand in both of hers and said "I have.. issues.. things have happened. I.. Just need to think, for a bit, okay?"
She released Cafas' hand, and sat there, staring straight ahead, trying not to look at Cafas' eyes. She didn't want to know what he was thinking. After a few moments silence, she smiled that 'after-awkward' shy smile, and spoke softly. "So how about that food you promised?"
Cafas nodded, he wasn't used to the whole emotional side of people. However he did sort of understand where she was coming from. Damn those hormones. Now he'd messed it up for her, made her sad. The mention of personal life issues dulled his eyes to a natural looking brown. He barely noticed when she mentioned food. He was having flashbacks to what seemed like a lifetime ago. There was crushed and melted metal, ambulances, police, and those men in their official looking suits. Amidst it all he could now see, clearer than when it had happened, the girl in the other car. Maybe future knowledge was corrupting his memory, but it hurt deep inside him.
'Come on man, snap out of it, it's bad enough you dream about it. Focus on the present.'
Alchemist's vision faded back in on the room and he looked back up at Elli, his eyes still reflecting the inner emotion. The brown was usually a nice change from the pinks and oranges. However it was hardly as fulfilling for Cafas. " Yeah, I'm sorry I upset you. I do understand it can be... difficult after a hard experience. For now though, food, yes." Cafas stood and walked towards the still open door. He wasn't sure if it just hadn't latched or what, but it was ajar. "Would madam care to recommence the tour, which shall end with a lovely meal in the mansion's very own dining room." Fake British accent was back.
" Yeah, I'm sorry I upset you. I do understand it can be... difficult after a hard experience. For now though, food, yes. Would madam care to recommence the tour, which shall end with a lovely meal in the mansion's very own dining room."
Elli smiled, almost apologetically, and said "It's okay." She then followed Cafas out the door, trying to keep herself together and not show how torn up she was inside. Not the hurt kind of torn up, no, just the kind of I have no idea what to do! torn up. She did like Cafas, really, but she felt that it was too soon to know if she really liked him like that. She thought she did, but the last time ended so horribly that she is hesitant even to admit it to herself. But she also thought that her not just going with her gut and saying yes to him might drive him away, make him think she didn't even want to be friends.
When they were at the doors to the dining hall, Elli couldn't take it anymore. She had to at least give Cafas a reason, she owed him that much, she felt. She put a light touch on his arm, and stopped walking. "Cafas. I... This is. Hard.. For me, to talk about it. I didn't even talk to my brothers... Although that was partly because they would probably have gone out first thing and tried to beat him up." Elli smiled, thinking of her brothers and how she was helping to get them college. "But last time I... Cared about someone, who wasn't family.. I thought they cared too, they acted like it... I did... things, stupid things.. He humiliated me..." Elli stopped, and Cafas could undoubtedly hear the hurt, and anger, and tears that were being held back in her voice. "And I lost the few friends I had... My life was a living hell. All because I thought he gave more than a passing rat's ass!"
It was a quiet trip to the dining room doors. Cafas was just about to enter and break the silence when a gentle touch on his arm caused him to turn around. He would have to get that reflex looked to. He was faced with a distraught looking Elli. Well, there went that part of his plan too. This could explain his lack of love life. Well that and the frequent lack of showering in his pre-mansion times.
"Cafas. I... This is. Hard.. For me, to talk about it. I didn't even talk to my brothers... Although that was partly because they would probably have gone out first thing and tried to beat him up."
Cafas noted the smile and was momentarily relieved, however the story that was clearly upsetting her had not been told yet, so he tried not to get too hopeful. He was however now concerned rather than sad. Joy, one red eye, one brown eye, that was sure natural.
"But last time I... Cared about someone, who wasn't family.. I thought they cared too, they acted like it... I did... things, stupid things.. He humiliated me..."
She was not sounding happy at all. Rather like she was having her heart removed with a spoon in many pieces. He had no idea what to do. Should he let her stand by herself? No that seemed a little cold, but other things were too personal. It was one of those damned if you do damned if you don't situations.
"And I lost the few friends I had... My life was a living hell. All because I thought he gave more than a passing rat's ass!"
It was about that point that it was decided for him. For someone who had never really dealt with too many distraught people he still had the comforting instinct. He stepped forward to close the gap a little and embraced Elli in as much of a comforting hug as one can give when they are A frame hugging. He just hoped it came across as what it was rather than what it could be interpreted as by such a hurt party. Damn you misinterpretable kindness.
'Sad people need hugs, she is getting hugged and she will damned well appreciate it. I just wish there was something more I could do.'
Cafas decided to open up to her as she had opened up to him. He could be quite warm to people who made an effort to open up to him. A low voice was given as the best volume for the situation by his brain, not a whisper, just low. "I try not to talk about this, in fact, I never have. When I was seventeen I had a best friend. She was the closest person I had to a girlfriend I guess. I'd known her for, well, years. We had no secrets, but I don't recall telling her I was a mutant. I'd been down at the shops buying a present for her birthday. I was about ready to go all in and ask her on a date. I was driving home. I was going to fast through an intersection." He paused, regained control over his tear ducts and continued. "A truck pulled out, he wasn't watching the road, it was my right of way. I still should have looked. I swerved to avoid him and had a head on collision with an oncoming car." Cafas could feel the tears running down his face. His eyes were a deeper brown than before, though still natural looking. "I naturally saved myself. It was the single hardest use of my mutation I've ever experienced. Nearly a quarter ton in under a second. I just grabbed the door and let the energy flow. I passed out nearly immediately, the pain was beyond belief, I really thought I was too late. when I came to there were cops, ambos, fireys everywhere. I was on a stretched surrounded by guys in suits. Once I realised what was going on I ran for it." He let go of Elli to finish his story, which was getting a lot longer than hers had been.
'Come on, wrap it up I guess, can't spend too much time leaking from the eyes.'
Cafas blinked the tears from his eyes, stopped the flor then continued as best he could. "I only found out on the evening news that she had been in the other car. They couldn't do a thing for her, she was gone before the ambos arrived." he decided it best to cut the story off before it became a novel. He hoped his story could be considered fair trade for hers. Secret for secret. People had been killed for less.
Elli was completely surprised with the hug, and at first she didn't know how to respond. Her arms just hung limp by her sides for a few moments. Then she recovered, and they circled Cafas. She sniffled a little, and tried to keep the tears in, so they wouldn't run into Cafas' shirt. Though she had been impressed by it when they had first met, it was just at that moment she realized how tall Cafas really was. He was a head above her, and it was very comforting to be able too press her face into his chest. It was so comfoting, in fact, that Elli's tears begun to flow. In return she felt tears slip into her hair, coming from Cafas. She didn't mind, really, she was glad he understood.
"Thank you. I needed that."
I was going to fast through an intersection. A truck pulled out, he wasn't watching the road, it was my right of way. I still should have looked. I swerved to avoid him and had a head on collision with an oncoming car. I naturally saved myself. Once I realised what was going on I ran for it."
So that was why Cafas was crying. It made sense now. Or rather, it made more sense. When Cafas released her, Elli was smiling, though there were still a few tears in her eyes. "Same here. You are the first person I've actually talked to about it. It feels... Better, I guess."
Cafas was not expecting a smile, so he was caught off guard when his natural reaction was to smile back. But this was understandable; he was being a big wimp. He needed to take two spoonfuls of cement and harden up. "Yeah I spose it does a bit." He inwardly hoped it would get rid of the recurring dream, but didn't hold much faith in the healing power of talking, not to that extent anyway. However it was food time, and Mansion food was always worthy of it's surrounds. Well, sort of, lunch tended to be less of a big affair. He had no idea what was on the menu for that night but he assumed it would be delicious. "Well now... time to eat yes?" He smiled more genuinely at the thought of food and entered the completely empty dining room. A head popped out of the kitchen then ducked back in. So the staff were home, good, he would hate to actually have to cook.
'Mostly cos I suck but partly cos it's time consuming'
He sat at the nearest table and waited for the chef to arrive, or the waiter, he wasn't sure if they were one and the same. "So... what movies do you like?" Cafas had an idea, back in the rear of his mind. Watching a movie gave the more time to hang out, and the mansions up to date-ness was almost verging on the brink of scary. How they seemed to get DVDs the day they came out was beyond him, but they always did. Not that all the movies they had were good, they just had everything.
Elli was glad that was over, though she was also happy to have the chance to unload on someone. She had held that inside of her for years, and It had made her wary. So, Cafas led her into the dining room, and Elli didn't notice the guy duck into the kitchen. "Wow Cafas, this is really nice. You eat here all the time?" Elli did notice that it was empty. Maybe Cafas reserved it for them? "So... what movies do you like?"
Movies? Dinner, and a movie? Well, that sounded like a cheap date to Elli. Good thing she was a cheap date... Mostly... "Oh, I like horror, Sci-Fi, and sometimes a romance, if I'm in the mood. Why? What do you like?"
Cafas could feel the muscles in his cheeks complaining about the terrible abuse he was putting them through what with the smiling all over the place. He did indeed always eat here. But the answer was meant to be aloud. "Breakfast, lunch and dinner. snacks we have to make ourselves but I'm no master chef, so I tend to avoid cooking for myself." He watched as the kitchen personnel made his way toward them. It was almost funny to watch him negotiate the treacherous path between tables. Alchemist turned back to Elli.
'The lady asked a question.'
C.J. raised an eyebrow at her choice of genres, well now, how out of the ordinary, a girl into horror and sci-fi movies. Cafas wasn't the bravest soul but he was willing to give it a go. "I'll watch anything that doesn't feature a young girl's collectible doll." He didn't mention that he was somewhat afraid of the dark, it didn't seem like the right time. The right time for that would be never. Well, possibly never. It was then that the kitchen person arrived.
"Would you like the steak this evening or the fettuccini alfredo."
The very cultured palate of a nineteen year old middle class Sydneyite was far from touching anything with too many syllables it it's name. He would of course have the steak. "I'll have the steak thank you. Medium rare." Yes Cafas was the classy type of guy who likes his food simple. Partly because of his parents, mostly because he had never had enough money to eat anything fancy. That and they didn't serve proper steak often enough in the mansion.
"Breakfast, lunch and dinner. snacks we have to make ourselves but I'm no master chef, so I tend to avoid cooking for myself. I'll watch anything that doesn't feature a young girl's collectible doll."
Elli laughed, then said "Barbie, you guys honestly have Barbie? Really?"
"Would you like the steak this evening or the fettuccini alfredo."
"I'll have the steak thank you. Medium rare."
"Simple tastes, eh? I guess I'll be having the fettuccini alfredo, then. Could we get a salad, as well?" Elli asked
"Of course. If you will just allow me to show you to your seats, then I will take your orders back." The waiter guy showed Cafas and Elli to two seats at the end of the long table that faced each other, and then went into the kitchen.
Elli was content to sit in silence, at least for a bit, as she didn't really know what to talk about..
"Yes, we do indeed have barbie, also Polly pocket and bratz. Even the mansion has its deep dark secrets I suppose." Cafas noted the simple tastes comment with a smile. Now was no time to start arguments over choice in food. Besides, the mansion only seemed to get the finest ingredients for their food so he was confident it would be the best steak of his life. The kitchen person showed them to two seats facing each other. Apparently Elli was quite happy to sit in silence. Well, fine by him. No immediate topic sprung into the normally quite chatty male's head, so he was left without a subject in the first place. Instead he watched Elli. Not in a creepy way, more like one studies a friend to determine how they're feeling.
'Well most likely glad to be off topics of the romantic kind.'
He hadn't noticed a gentle smile warm his face, neither did he really note his mood raising, the yellow eyes returning in all their parchment coloured glory. He had a proper friend. After so many months he had someone he could genuinely say he shared an emotional moment with. The connection was now permanent as far as he saw it. The room was completely silent but for the sounds of the kitchen in the background and the hum of the heating system. It was a pleasant atmosphere to be sure.
'I must be a completely different person now, I have yet to break the silence. Perhaps I am just smart enough to perceive that conversation is not necessary.'
Cafas shifted his gaze away from Elli’s body language, which may as well have been Japanese for all he could read of it, to her eyes. He didn't know why really, eye contact tended to make him uncomfortable. His smile broadened from content to happy without him noticing. Must have been something in the water.
The silence that enveloped Elli and Cafas was not an oppressive one. It was the comfortable kind of silence between two friends who, at the moment, have nothing more to say. She was just glad the... emotional moment was over. Sure, it felt good to finally talk about it to someone who cared, and sure Cafas probably felt the same way, but it was still supposed to be a fun night. Now that Elli was thinking along those relatively romantic lines, she saw that that night was starting to resemble a date more closely than she had really thought it would. And maybe it was a date, sorta. I mean, dinner, and then a movie. Still, Elli liked to keep it as just a friendly get-together.
Elli noticed that Cafas was looking at her eyes when she returned her attention to the present, and saw his smile. His eyes had gone from the brown they were earlier to a yellow that Elli know knew to be happy, or at least content. She was glad that whole sobfest was over, and just in time, it seemed, for their food arrived just as she was about to break the silence. Elli's salad and fettuccini was set down in front of her, and Cafas received his steak.
