The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

"Totally."
The bus pulled to a stop by the side of the street. Shin bumped forward a little, but he'd been prepared. Shoes braced against metal. Hands steadied knees. As she'd spoken her feelings of wanting to do something, of hearing the differing voices, but never one of moderation, the Asian had stealthily tracked the street going by out of the corner of his eye. One street, then another, and another. Closer and closer to Full Circle. And then, the street before. Without a single wasted movement, he'd reached up to pull the cord that let the bus driver know to stop at the end of the next block. This was his stop.
Shin rose, and nodded to Twyla. "The feelings you're talking about are similar to what I went through in my mind before I joined. To desire to help others, to do something positive for the world, to set an example of what good mutants can do... that's what I wanted. I don't usually say this to students, since I'm wary about putting them in danger, but... you'd make a good X-men."
He'd tried to shield Kasumi from it, to shade Kokoro's eyes from the reality of mutants, and kept his parents out of the loop for as long as he could, but there was no denying it. Mutants existed. They needed all the help they could get. People would do what they felt needed doing, regardless whatever he did to stop them. All he could do was do his best, and help every single person he could.
One or two people filed off the bus. Shin smiled at Twyla and waited for her to get up. "Full Circle's about a half a block's walk away. Do you drink coffee?"

Twyla jerked when the bus stopped. At some point she had noted that Shin had pulled the cord to stop the bus but her mind was so focused on other thoughts that it was still surprising when she slid forward in her seat and her knees collided with the seat in front of her. He stood up and it was made clear that this was indeed their stop. After he stood he proceeded to tell her that he had had similar thoughts before he joined the X-men. Maybe this could be her outlet for doing something for a change? It was a lot to think about, the pile made even large with the tail-end of Shin’s remarks. “...you'd make a good X-men." Would she? Twyla wasn’t so sure. Surprise showed on her face and she stood up to hide some of the emotions that went across her face. Surprise, excitement, worry, and then doubt all in rapid succession before a confused sounding “Thanks.” She returned the smile, although it was a confused one. Huh, that was something to think about.
The piece of paper got refolded and put safely in her back pocket once more. "Full Circle's about a half a block's walk away. Do you drink coffee?" He’d said he worked at a bookstore, hadn’t he? That was something to look forward to and Twyla was silently thankful that she didn’t have more than enough money for bus fare–she didn’t do well around books that required money to read. She walked into the isle before replying. “When you hit highschool it gets really hard to get but at for forty-five to feed calves.” There was a small laugh after this but it was the truth–Twyla had begun to appreciate coffee when she had realized that a highschool schedule was much more demanding than the middle school equivalent. As she made her way off the bus she took another glance at the girl with the pink mohawk. Pink was definitely a good color as far as hair dyes went, Twyla decided. A very good color.

>>When you hit high school it gets really hard to get up at 4:45 to feed calves.” She laughed lightly.
Shin smiled. "Totally understand you there. My grandparents lived in the country. Prime farmland. Not quite the same as farms over here, but getting up early? I can relate. When I visited, they used to get me up early to do odd chores... with a pinch of a cheek and a wink, they'd seal my daily fate."
He stepped off the bus, and paused momentarily by the bus stop's sign, looking left, then right. Shin turned towards Twyla. "Lately, I've been getting up earlier though. I've tried something a bit better than coffee... apples and chocolate. I heard that caffeine wakes one up, but doesn't get them moving as well... or something like that. This way." He began walking down the sidewalk at a leisurely pace. "Apples and chocolate are supposed to be easier on the body... either way, it's fruit, and it's candy. Can't go wrong."
After a few minutes of walking, they reached those famous revolving doors. Shin walked through the spinning panes of glass, into Full Circle.
"Hey Aurum," Shin leaned against the counter of the coffee bar, and gave the brown-haired barista the eye. "Two cups of coffee. Decaf for me. And Twyla?" Shin glanced back over his shoulder at the girl.

Twyla nodded as Shin told her about his grandparents’ farm. It was the same everywhere, farms required more work than there were hours in a day. They made their way off the bus an onto the street.
Chocolate and apples? That sounded better that chalky coffee for sure. It made sense that an apple would be good for starting the body up, with all of its healthy goodness. Chocolate was amazing by itself and Twyla didn’t need to reason out the importance of it. The suggestion was definitely made a mental note of and tucked away in the Comments Box for later.
As they walked the teen made sure to mark the streets so that she could find her way back to this bookstore that she still didn’t know the name of. When they reached it Twyla wondered for a moment why it looked familiar and then she realized that she had seen it on the news. It was special for some reason, but she couldn’t remember why. She almost got distracted by the revolving doors, but managed to resist the urge to ride in them. Coffee was the mission, so she followed Shin (there she was, following again) to the coffee bar. When asked about hers Twyla panicked for a moment before mentally counting up the pocket change she had. “Regular, please.” She replied when she remembered the ten she had hastily stashed in her pocket as ‘just in case’ money.
Now that she had a moment to look around, Twyla smiled. Full Circle was decidedly better in person than the blurry pictures from the news that she half-remembered. Most bookstores were good places, this one didn’t disappoint.

"Normal and decaf, it is." Aurum nodded. "Size?"
"Small." Shin replied distractedly. He set enough money to pay for them both on the counter, and turned to smile at Twyla. "My treat?" Behind the counter, Aurum worked filling their cups. After a moment, he set the drinks down for the pair with the comment. 'Careful, hot.' Shin picked up his change, and held out a cup for Twyla, then nodded towards a rounded table not too far away.
Full Circle was nice in that, aside from the numerous shelves of books, it had a cafe area with comfortable chairs, a frumpy couch or two, and tables big enough for two. Shin sank down into his seat at the table, and sipped his coffee with a complacent smile. He glanced at his watch. His shift started soon. Still, there was time enough for a conversation.
"This is where I work," Shin commented offhandedly, then paused. A light laugh. He scratched the back of his head. "Think I told you that already. Anyways, this bookstore has quite the history. I'm not certain if you heard on the news, but... it survived an anti-mutant rally. When it was rebuilt, the owner (who'd been hurt in the rally) decided to make the store's stance known. This store tries to take a decidedly-neutral stance on things. We sell books here, not our opinions. It's one of the reasons I thought you'd get something out of tagging along with me. This is a great place to study, to ponder the big questions over a cup of cocoa or coffee. Plus, books?" He seemed to remember Twyla being a big fan of books. "All sorts of fair and balanced sources to sift through, here."

“Thank you very much.” Twyla said with a smile as she was handed the steaming cup. No sugar packets were grabbed nor any dairy or fake-dairy mix-ins. Twyla liked her coffee black, plain, simple, no extra work needed. She took a seat at the table half-distracted as she drank in her surroundings. The place had a nice feel to it–it was very calm and comfortable.
When he glanced at his watch Twyla remembered that the coffee buyer had been on his way to work–which was their current location--before their meeting. Hopefully she wasn’t keeping him. He reiterated half of her last thought when he said "This is where I work," Twyla smiled into her sip of coffee. Her cells cheered for the caffeine that would soon be flooding her system as Shin laughed quietly before continuing talking. So Full Circled HAD been on the news then, her initial inklings had been right. An anti-mutant rally...Twyla wasn’t sure if she remembered hearing about it or if her mind was just filling in the memories to go with the information being given to her. It was a pretty intense situation and Twyla liked the final outcome. If more businesses took the neutral stance and made it known it could have a big impact on the mutant and human communities alike. It made sense that he would want to show her a place like this, especially after she had just received so much biased information. “...Plus, books?” Twyla’s eyes left the speaker and roamed the shelves surrounding her, hunting through the covers for the interesting looking and familiar ones "All sorts of fair and balanced sources to sift through, here." Lots and lots of everything. Not for the first time, she was glad that the majority of her cash was at the mansion, tucked in a box under her bed, away from temptation “This place is pretty cool.” On last skim while she spoke quietly and to no one in particular and then her eyes were back in the conversation. Sitting again after the rally, the bus and the walk that ensued, her body realized that it was tired, despite the incoming caffeine. She’d had a day and her everything was tired from just processing it all. Soon she would need to think about everything and make sense of the things that had been so clear earlier. Her mind needed sorting, and she was the only one responsible for that. Besides, some people had jobs that needed doing.
But, one last question that had popped up at some point on the bus ride and then Twyla would be at full capacity–a teenage mind can only take so much all at once. Big question and big answers were taking up a lot of space in her head. “I had one more question, If I decided I wanted to–I still have a lot to think about–but if I decided I wanted to try to become an...X-man–” Her voice dropped on the word, since she was not sure if the man behind the coffee bar was allowed to hear that kind of a conversation. “What would I have to do?” Twyla still wasn’t sure what her path was going to be but it was best to use a fount of knowledge, in this case Shin, while she had it.

>> “I had one more question, If I decided I wanted to–I still have a lot to think about–but if I decided I wanted to try to become an...X-man–” Her voice lowered as if uncertain. Shin kept silent, and let her finish. “What would I have to do?”
Shin took another drink and reeled in his thoughts. "What I did, before I joined up, was trained. You've gotta be prepared for the challenges you'll face, since I'll tell you up front, what we do isn't easy. It's best to have a couple training sessions completed in that room I didn't mention... remember, the one that wasn't 'that dangerous'?" He took a bemused sip, hiding his smile in the cup. "You're supposed to contact a member of the team to let you in there, and have at least one training session with a member of the current team." Shin casually jabbed himself in the chest with a thumb, then moved on without taking a breath. "You should probably talk to another member of the team, just to be safe. Have you met Sam? Or... Ghost? Or maybe Streak? Ghost works here, so maybe if you lurk, you'll meet her..."
He set down his coffee and folded his hands. "The last thing you'll need is a tryout thread with one of the X-men leaders. I could introduce you to them. If you manage to get through all that, you get to be a trainee."
"Oh, and you have to be at least 15. I think you met that requirement a while back."

The first rule of gymnastics was training and the same went for making the dance team; so it made perfect sense that the first advice given in reply to her question was...drum roll please...training! But not just any training, training in the danger room...that’s what it was called, right? Twyla was pretty sure but she had learned a lot that first day at the Mansion and some of it had gotten jumbled in her brain. And then there was training with someone else. Twyla hadn’t met any of the people that Shin mentioned–she shook her head no in an embarrassed way in response to his question. Hearing about someone and actually meeting someone were very different things and Twyla was only really good at the hearing things.
It all sounded like a lot of work but the end result would be worth it–if she decided she wanted to mess with any of the business at all of course. She still wasn’t sure what she wanted to do. In the back of her mind a voice whispered that she could always attempt something, it didn’t mean she had to like it or run with it forever. The same voice told her that there was nothing worse than no attempt at all; that it was better to try and fail than to have never tried. In any case, Twyla didn’t have to make a decision on the spot, so there was no use overloading her brain.
"Oh, and you have to be at least 15. I think you met that requirement a while back." This comment made Twyla let out a startled half-giggle. She'd met that requirement almost three years ago. Whoa, she was getting old.
A sip of coffee and then: “If I decide I want to try this, I’d really appreciate your help.” Her face was honest and her brown eyes were shy as she spoke. “Thank you for everything today, you’ve helped me get focused.” Her lack of center had been replaced by a new option...maybe it would become a goal at some point?
“I mean it, thanks so much. I’m sorry if I took up too much of your time.” Some habits were hard to break. Twyla stood up after taking the last drink of her coffee. The tired feeling had been replaced by an urge to move–to go and run. “I think I’ll let you get to work now...” She stood there awkwardly for a minute, the sudden caffeine and the shyness causing her legs to match the color of the carpet. “This place is cool, I’ll have to come back sometime....Um, bye...?” It was intoned as more of a question than anything else and caused her discomfort to crawl all the way up her legs and past her waist.
Looking down at her trunk she sighed inwardly and brought herself back into focus.
