The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

It was very early in the morning. The time was just a few minutes after one in the morning. A light in the kitchen was on and a cat girl with pure white fur was gathering some snack food.
A plate set on the counter held several items. A red apple, a few cubes of cheddar cheese and a cup of vanilla yogurt. To wash it down there was a cold glass of milk.
Nika didn't bother to sit at the small table preffering to stand instead. The tip of her tail swayed slightly in a content manner. Her ears and nose passively seeking movement or the presence of others, but for now things were very quiet.

"Doh doh doh, fighting evil by moonlight~ Winning love by daylight~ Never running from a real fight~ She is the one called dohdohdoh—" Shin hummed along to himself sleepily as he walked towards the kitchen. There was a slight clip to his step, a minor bounce in his hop. The doctor had told him it was nearly time to remove the cast.
The average broken bone takes about 6 to 7 weeks to heal. Shin’s arm had been a relatively clean fracture (thanks, Sammy), so he was no exception to the eyeballed number rule. Four weeks of sloshing about the mansion like a drip with no purpose had gotten him everywhere, and the two weeks spent in the body of another…? Well… it was difficult to talk about the results of that journey of self-discovery, but the other guy’d got to deal with his cast while Shin strong-armed his way through life. Doc Prof’s news that the bone was nearly healed brought Shin relief.
At the same time… he skipped into the kitchen, pewpewing his way to the cereal with raised arm-cannon/cast. He might miss being unable to use his right hand for filling out paperwork, or the difficulties life presented him with in training to do things he’d normally had no problems doing with his good hand when suddenly converted to being left-handed.
The cereal bowl scraped down against the counter, fresh from the cabinet. Shin swayed hips towards the refrigerator, wheeling ‘round the catgirl for the milk. He hummed to himself a bit more as he picked up the jug, and veered back.
“She is the one~ Sailor Moo—!” He suddenly paused and turned around to look at the catgirl. A slight double take. “Good morning,” Shin smiled brightly. A second thought, he glanced at his watch (with minor difficulty. A one-handed milk juggle nearly ensued). “Er… early morning, that is… man, it’s only 1AM? I thought I’d slept longer than that…” He must’ve been energetic from the good news.

Nika's cat hearing picked up a voice singing in the hallway. It was a male voice and one she didn't remember hearing before. His foot steps sounded energetic to match his tone in his singing. From what she could tell this person was in a very pleasant mood.
Her deduction was correct as a male entered the kitchen and moved about. She saw a cast on his right arm which instantly made her wonder how he had been injured. He stood nearly the same height as herself as he moved around the girl to get some milk for himself.
"Umm...good morning to you too. What happened to your arm?"

"Ask Cold Steel," Shin shrugged. He slid around her to his bowl and set down the milk. Cereal rattled out into the bowl like a jackhammer to just-woken ears. Shin glanced back at the pretty catgirl with a shrug and a half-smile. "Although it doesn't matter much who did it anymore. DocProf says it'll be able to come off soon. For that, I am grateful."
"So, why are you up at 1AM, Miss Catgirl? Me? I guess I'm just excited about the possibility of getting my right hand back. You? Can't sleep? Shin carefully poured a bit of milk into the bowl, using his right hand to steady the jug. He set it down and reached for the silverware drawer, snagging a spoon after that. Metal dinged against bowl as the spoon plopped in. Shin picked the cereal bowl up in one hand, and drifted off to the table.
He sat down and dug in. It was the breakfast of champions. Raisin Bran and more raisin bran. Maybe he'd attempt to fry an egg? His eyes drifted deftly back to the fruit and cheese the white-furred girl was eating. Apples sounded good as well. She had quite the spread. "My name's Shin," he added in-between cereal mouthfuls.

Cold Steel. It took her a moment to remember who that was, but then it came to her. He was in the big X-Men training session ran by Tricity. She had heard he had been placed into a higher postition. Part of her disliked that thought. She liked doing her own thing. Afterall, what cat doesn't?
"I see. That's good that you'll be getting it off soon though."
Nika bit into the apple and let the juice pool on her tongue before swallowing it followed by the pulp. Then a cube of cheese and a gulp of milk were next. There was always good food here.
"Yeah, I couldn't sleep. The truth is I had a bad dream and then my stomach told me it was hungry. My name is Nika by the way. Have you been at the mansion very long?"

"Ah, I see. Can't blame a stomach for being tempermental and demanding. They are gluttons for punishment." Shin smirked into his cereal. Face lowered over the bowl, it was slightly difficult to hear his response. He worked fast at that bowl. By the time she'd asked her question, he was tilting the cereal dish backwards with one hand to drain the last of the milk. The bowl clattered back down on the table as Shin let out a satisfied gasp. "Gah~ Good food. ...Eh?!" Table legs screeched slightly as he turned around to face her. He pointed a semi-confuzzled finger at himself.
"Me? I thought more people knew I was a mansion greeter now... I work here. Guess I'm still kinda new." A light laugh. "I came to the mansion around December of last year... or was it New Year's? Hmm..." He stopped to ponder, then struck a tangent. "So, what was your bad dream about?" Some dreams were better when shared.
This Shin boy was a little strange, but then again it was the early morning. Maybe he was different when he got his normal amount of sleep. He finished his cereal and then positioned himself to direct his responses more to Nika.
"I've been here for quite a bit longer, but then I also have been out quite a bit lately. So it's possible we just never met due to timing."
He asked about her bad dream. Truth was that it was more like a nightmare. It was all a bunch of jumbles and not anything following any sort of order. Nika tumbled one of the cheese cubes around her plate with her index finger.
"All I really remember was bodies and blood everywhere."

"Yipes, bodies and blood. Worst I've ever had was losing someone I cared for..." His face fell. It wasn't scarring like verbose viscera and stagnant stigmata, but still. After the brawl at King's Pharmaceuticals, he'd had his nights where he shot up in bed in a cold sweat, worrying, only to glance at the phone, then the wall clock, and kick himself for wanting to call Kasumi at 1AM. Things had been tough for him for the first few days after Kasumi'd nearly died. What with getting the cast and dealing with Sam... even though Sam had made things seem alright at the meeting in the War Room, there was still something there beneath the ice.
Shin looked at Nika curiously. He spoke lightly, voice a tentative calm. "Ever have one of those dreams where you're running after something, or away from someone, and no matter how fast you run, you get nowhere...?" Or worse. "That maybe you'll never see them the same way again... that maybe they're gone for good."

The reaction from Shin's face told Nika that perhaps he had a similar dream before. At the very least it was something he seemed to be relating to. While Shin appeared to drift off in thought Nika finished her apple. The images from her nightmare were beginning to fade from her mind and she was returning to her normal self.
A few moments past before Shin spoke up again. His voice was softer than it previously had been. His question struck nothingness with Nika and she shook her head.
"I'm sorry but I've never had such a dream. I've never been close to anyone and no has been close to me. I guess I've always been on my own."

"That sounds very sad," Shin noted offhandedly.
He rose from his seat and walked the bowl to the sink, dropping it in. Water ran. Brown fingers brushed over the side of the bowl, scrubbed it clean, and rinsed. It clinked into the rack by the sink, next to its yellow-and blue dish brethren. They were all family, just like the mutants at the mansion. They lived together, served the same purposes, and shattered just as easily alone as with each other.
To live alone... Shin wondered how it felt. "I don't know what I'd do if I didn't have family and friends," Shin muttered. He walked over to the refrigerator and bent down to pick a package of bacon up from the meat drawer. Tearing it open, he turned towards the oven and set down a pan. Cooking oil spread out across the metal as Shin drained a greenish bottle. He cranked the heat and got things ready. "I always had someone growing up. A big sister, a grandmother, the jerks at school. Even my teacher, Mr. Ishida... I can't imagine living all one's life and never making connections. It just seems too sad." He turned to smile at Nika weakly. "Wanna be friends?"

He couldn't have hit the nail on the head any harder than when he commented on how sad Nika's life must be. Her life really had been a sad one. Given up by her parents then abused and used for entertainment by her adopted father. In fact, Nika never really did make any friends anywhere.
"You have no idea."
Her voice was sad and soft.
With all her snack foods having been consumed Nika also washed off her plate and put it in the rack to dry. She still had half a glass of milk remaining so she turned and leaned back against the counter. This gave her a better view of what Shin was doing.
She listened to him spill off about all the people he had in his life, and she tried to compare her life to his with no real similarity. Maybe that was part of why she was always doing things her own way. Granted, she had been part of a mission with Streak but afterwards they never had time to do anything else.
Out of the blue Shin asked a curious question. Nika tilted her head slightly to the left and gave the male a curious look. He wanted to be friends? They had only just met. She didn't know anything about her nor did she know much about him.
"Is that possible? Can you be friends with people you've only known for a few minutes?"

"Certainly." Shin replied as he walked past her to grab a carton of eggs from the fridge. He set the carton next to the bacon, and continued talking. "It's no different than meeting a nice person on the bus. You hardly know them, you smile. They smile." He spread the bacon across the pan like a grin, then cracked two eggs for eyes. "Friendship doesn't have to be a massive thing. It can be as simple as listening when someone needs to talk... So yeah. I think it's possible to be friends with someone you've only known a brief while. Stranger things have happened."
Shin aimed a smile back at Nika over his right shoulder as he fried.

Shin was making sense as Nika listened to him. On top of that she was also paying attention to his cooking. The smells were very nice, but with her stomach already working on her snack food it wasn't making her hungry.
"Ok then let's be friends."
An excited feeling rushed over Nika as she made her statement. While she liked Silver Streak she never had an actual friendship with him. It was more like a working partnership though she had hoped to be friends with him. Out of everyone in the Mansion Streak was the only person she knew the most about. Now she was starting something new with a new person.

The bacon sizzled happily as he heard her reply. Friends with a catgirl. When Shin had woken up that morning, he certainly hadn't figured that would happen. "Awesome." Shin enthused. He flipped an egg, contemplating what friends usually talked about at 1AM. How long she'd been at the mansion? No. She'd already said 'longer than him'. And to ask who Nika knew at the mansion might bring up the whole 'friends' topic again. Which was fine, since polite acquaintances were better than nothing, but— oh, Shin got lost in his head again, and now the bacon was in need of turning. A lightbulb went off over his head.
"So. What's your favorite food?" He asked point-blank, flipping the piece of meat over. The spatula slid in under the second egg like a scalpel, cutting it free from the pan.
And the first one was nearly done. He glanced over at Nika, with a pleading look in his eye. "Hey, can you grab me a plate please?"
That was the cat portion of her. Seriously, what cat doesn't like fish? Other than that Nika hadn't had too many other foods besides what could be called the norm. Maybe she could start trying new foods and drinks.
Nika retrieved a plate upon Shin's polite request and handed it to him.
