Rules & Character Applications

Site Rules

Character Creation and Powers:

1. You may apply as a mutant, human, Adapted human character, or Mystic. You should not be one of the canon Marvel characters, and you should not make references to them. In order to avoid discrepancies they don't officially exist in the MRO universe.

2. Mental disorders, photographic memory, hyper-intelligence, millionaires, political / business / underworld powerhouses, and other things rare in RL should be rare on MRO. Applications will be dealt with on a case-by-case basis, but be aware that these will be subject to Mod veto. For things like photographic memory, hyper-intelligence, etc, you'll stand a better chance if it's related to your mutation.

3. This site uses an original system of magic. It you want to play a Mystic or want your non-Mystic to use the most basic of magic, it is expected that you have read how our system of magic works and are familiar with overall site power levels. Mystic characters must also follows the rules laid out in A Player's Guide To Mystics.

4. No aliens, reality manipulation, broad-spectrum atomic/molecular manipulators, and advanced technology. Aliens don't fit in well with the MRO universe, and reality manipulators are inherently too overpowered to be fair. As far as atomic/molecular manipulation, that power is too broad; a targeted manipulation of related substances such as "metal," "water," or "plastics" is okay, but "the periodic table" is not. Finally, as a site that looks to focus on how mutations and magical powers affect an otherwise "real-world setting," we strive to keep the tech level of the site to modern-day levels.

5. All changes in the Powers, Mutations, and Mystic Abilities sections of character profiles must be approved first. Send any proposed changes to MutantRevolver@gmail.com or ask a mod on Discord if it's alright. For power growths for both Mutants and Mystics, make sure to use the appropriate Power Growth Template. You may not use any ability that you haven't been approved to use.

6. All characters must link to their application in the provided field in their profile. This makes it easy to look up your RP partners' profiles with a click. The rest of the fields are optional, but encouraged. If you chose to have an avatar, the max size is 150 x 150 pixels; for cover images, it's 220 x 350 pixels. 7. Rules to creating multiple characters: All characters must be approved. Post your proposed character profiles to the character applications sub-board. You will be asked to wait 2 weeks between each new character application. If a player seems to be having trouble with their current cast of characters (eg, not posting on them frequently or very much), the Mods may ask them to get their existing characters active again before approving a new character for them. Each player may have seven characters who can be either a Mutant, Adapted, Mystic, or Human as well as their one free human and one free mystic for a total of nine characters. Due to their free-form nature and additional complexities, we are not allowing a player's first character to be a Mystic.

Second - Ninth characters: Wait two weeks before creating an account and posting an application between each new character. We have removed the post-count requirements for characters in favor of a short time limit.

We understand that occasionally, some of us might feel the need to retire a character or shelve them because the muse is just not there. We get it, and we don’t want people feeling like they are stuck trying to make something work that isn’t. We do want to clarify one rule, however:

You will be asked to wait two weeks between new character applications. Period. This is not a loophole to get around the waiting period.

8. Be aware of the current site plot and history as you RP. (Click the "Plots" tab in the header for details.)

9. No god modding. This means you cannot control another character's actions. You cannot have your character use knowledge that they as a character had no way of knowing, even if you as a writer know something. During a battle you must let your opponent decide if your attack hits them or misses. You must allow other players a chance to respond to your actions; don't write so many actions happening in one post that other characters seem like they are standing still while everything happens. If you're going to cause property damage, maimings, or deaths in a thread, make sure it's okay with the other people you're RPing with--not everyone wants to end up as a witness, or accomplice, to a crime.

10. Don't overuse NPCs. Some people may fall in love with an NPC and start looking for excuses to use it in threads—it's better to wait, and just make that NPC into a real character when you've met the requirements. Some people may be tempted to use NPC minions to make their own character's position more powerful—if you can't get things done by working with PCs, though, it doesn't mean much. There are a lot that NPCs can be used for that they shouldn't: see the NPC Rules for more information.

11. This site is intermediate-to-advanced writing level and uses standard writing conventions including the following: third person, past tense, and normal grammar, spelling, and punctuation rules. This helps keep things readable for everyone. Also, please avoid over-coding your posts: italics to indicate thoughts/telepathy or color tags to make your character's spoken dialogue stand out are fine, but please leave things at that. 12. MRO is a T for Teen site. Based on RPG Rating Guidelines, MRO is a 2-2-2 site. What that means to us is: be subtle/non-graphic when writing violence, do not overuse or abuse swearing and vulgar language, keep the sexual content subtle, nongraphic, and make liberal use of fade to blacks, and avoid using/explicitly referencing illegal drugs. 13. Be polite and respectful in posts, PMs, and the Discord at all times. Out of character that is, the characters themselves probably won’t always be polite and respectful, but you, their players, should be.

• Discord-specific etiquette: Chat under your alias. Don't spam. If a controversial topic has been raised and someone asks for a subject change, change the subject.
  
  
• Thread-specific etiquette: Take turns in threads--if you need/want to change the posting order, talk to your RP partners, first. If someone goes AWOL, give them three days before you move on without them. If you're going to be away for an extended period, make sure to tell your RP partners and post in the Damn_absence_announcements Discord Channel or  Damn! I have to leave MRO!! thread.
  
  
• Player Disputes: If you have a disagreement with another player, try to work things out through PM/DMs first. If mediation is necessary, email MutantRevolver@gmail.com or PM The Mod Team and a Mod will step in to help.

Character Application

Please post your Completed Application in the "Character Applications" subforum under "Character Profiles". MRO does not have word count requirements for posts, but we are a "literate" RP site: please be descriptive in your profile and make sure to proofread, but don't worry about writing the next great novel. For examples, check out our approved Character Profiles.

Once you send in your application, a Moderator will work with you to make sure your mutation is unique and balanced. If you'd like to give yourself a head start, make sure to check our Taken Mutations List to see what powers are already in use by our active members, and our Guide to Creating a Well Defined Power for information on what we look for in the Mutations section. Once your character profile is approved, you'll be able to start posting.
