The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

She was so beautiful as she stood at the railing looking out over the water. A perfect silhouette in the figure hugging evening grown that flowed all the way down to her ankles. Her hair was gently waving around her shoulders as the cool breeze blew through it.
"Hi'." He murmured quietly as he moved up to stand beside her while slipping one arm around her waist. "You look more radiant than ever."
Her laugh was musical and seemed to fill the air with a joy that just made his heart swell. Gently gripping her shoulder he turned her so that he was looking down full into her face. Her features were smooth and flawless and it was even as though he could see the deep red shades that ran through her hair.
Without hesitation he slowly tilted his head downward. Her lips were parted ever so slightly and they looked so full and inviting that he knew he just couldn't resist.
*** Luke's eyes suddenly popped open and he lay still on the recliner with his heart racing. "A dream... just a dream." He murmured quietly as he worked to get his body calmed down and relaxed once again. He knew that he was interested in the young woman but to be dreaming about her was going quite a bit further than he realized.
For several minutes he lay still, breathing and listening to the sounds in the apartment but other than the sound of the air conditioner running things were mostly quiet. He was still kind of groggy and had no clue how much time had passed or how long he had slept but he really didn't care. After some time had passed he forced himself up out of the chair and walked to the kitchen. His muscles were still sore and while he knew without a doubt that his strength was still not back up to normal, some of the smoothness of movement was beginning to come back.
After pulling a jug of water out of the fridge and pouring himself a glass Luke wandered back into the living room, this time taking a seat on the brown leather couch. His heart beat had finally evened out once more and Luke could tell his adrenaline and hormones were moving back to normal levels. "Pull yourself together." He told himself sternly as he reached a hand out to grab the stereo remote that sat on the coffee table, "She's a friend right now."
Lifting the remote he turned on the CD in the player and immediately checked the volume to make sure it was low and wouldn't disturb Raina if she were still sleeping. Within a few seconds music from the 'Phantom Of The Opera' soundtrack began to float through the apartment. Taking another sip of water Luke placed the glass back on the coffee table and then leaned back full into the couch's cushions. "Just a dream... but what a dream."

ooc: good call on jumping threads! I liked your dream idea so forgive me for stealing Also, Cal/Rupert... I dont think this is GModding as it's a dream... so I hope it's ok!
IC: "No more talk of darkness, Forget these wide-eyed fears. I'm here, nothing can harm you - my words will warm and calm you. "
Raina was drifting somewhere and there was a lullaby of music in her ears. She felt weightless and fluid. She was looking into a mirror. She was looking at herself. Her hair was dark, it's true colour not the red. She was dressed in something white, furry, and carefully beaded. She looked like herself, her true self.
There were men and women standing behind her in the reflections. She was worried if she turned around they wouldn't be there in reality so she continued to stare into the mirror taking no note of her surroundings. Familiar faces stared back- family, friends, tribe members... In the faces she saw Naveed her brother and smiled. Following his gaze she saw Flloyd. He looked happy and fine but her eyebrows still came togeather. Next to Flloyd was a very angry Rupert Kelley and he was pointing a gun right at her. Her blood ran cold.
She turned from the mirror and began to run through a blank canvas but Rupert stepped through the mirror and followed. He wasn't the Rupert she'd glued her memories to- the nice Rupert, the Kind Rupert... but instead he was the Rupert of the camps... distraught with twisted contortions in his face. He aimed the gun at her she tripped. She heard the fire from it but it had missed her she was sure.
Everything felt more urgent now as she got to her feet. Looking back she saw that Naveed and Flloyd were chasing them. Perhaps chasing Rupert, perhaps chasing her... she wasn't sure but she did realise she was now running toward the mansion.
"Hounded out by everyone! Met with hatred everywhere! No kind word from anyone! No compassion anywhere!"
The music she heard was now urgent and violent. She had to get to the mansion she knew that much. The white dress seemed heavy like concrete and slowed her down like she was barely running at all.
At the steps of the mansion she fell and twisted around to see Rupert facing her with the gun. "Christine, Christine . . .Why, why . . .?" Said Rupert pulling the trigger on the gun.
"My name isn't Christine..." was the last thing Raina thought as she watched the red explode from her chest.
A shrill scream filled the apartment as Raina not entierly awake yet sat up and howled shaking violently with tears streaming down her face. She clutched at her chest like it held the most pain in the world and she could make no sense of where she was or what was happening. Just that Rupert had shot her. Just like he'd shot her twice before. The man who was supposed to love her had shot her. Because she was a mutant. He'd tried to shoot her dead.

(OOC: Wow... I was going with the happy dreams but your nightmare was something else to read. And nice influence with the background music affecting what she was dreaming.)
It was amazing how quickly a person could react or come completely awake when the right sort of shock was applied. For some it was realizing that they were late for an appointment... for some, the sound of a creaking floorboard or door... for Luke it was the sound of a woman he had begun to care deeply for screaming as they she were dieing.
As the sound filled the apartment, the blind man was leaping up and moving towards the spare bedroom with the grace and power of a trained combatant. Gone was the weariness and muscle soreness, temporarily drowned out by the adrenaline coursing through his veins. Someone must have gotten in. Somehow they had gotten past his security as well as his own senses and were now attacking Raina within his own home. Retribution would be swift and without the slightest hint of mercy as his bare feet moved silently across the carpetted floor.
Pushing the door open he continued forward, his sonar taking in the room in less than a second's time. Raina was alone... noone was attacking her but she had still just screamed and if the expression on her face were any indication she was terrified by something. Something in her dreams had pushed her almost to the breaking point and she had cried out because she had no other way to respond.
Moving immediately to the bed Luke wrapped his arms around the woman and held her tightly as he began to whisper soothing noises into her ear. For several minutes he couldn't think of any words to say... just the shushing sounds that made most anyone feel reassured and safe.
"I'm here Raina... it was just a dream." He finally murmured when words began to flow into his mind again, "You're safe... noone can hurt you here. You're safe."

ooc: welps, I think since she's thinking so much in comparison to her past relationship it was about time for some trauma and nothing like a traumatic situation to bring out some traumatic dreams!
Ic:
When Luke first put his arms around Raina she shook violently. Her eyes were still darting around the room and she was panting. Everything was coming into focus and she felt pains in her stomach from the anxiety. She still wasnt quite at the calmed down point and tears were still pouring down. Poor Raina was so emotional.
"he shot me he shot me he shot me" she kept saying rocking just a little and leaning wearily into Luke's embrace. She started to calm and her hysterical crying turned to quiet sobs. She'd realized she'd been dreaming once Luke told her so but she couldn't turn off the reaction of her body.
There was no qwerky apologies now, no jokes about the situation, just a pure high of fear that Raina seriously wanted to come down from. Her skin was clammy and cold and her breathing was shallow. All her brain could think about for the moment was Rupert.
Why now? She'd been so happy. Despite the near death experieince Raina was feeling real happiness since before the camps. For nearly a year she'd never felt so calm, so herself, so real, so happy. Was that why the old fears of Rupert were sneaking up again?
She knew she wasn't in love with him anymore. Maybe she never was to begin with... just an infatuation. Spending time with Flloyd and her surgery experience had shed the light on that. But could it be she really was this afraid of the man? Or maybe she was afraid of the idea... the idea of being close to someone again, the idea that she might hurt them or they might hurt her.
There really wasn't any getting around this. If she wanted to persue Luke or be persued by Luke she'd have to tell him the truth and all of it. About Rupert, about the Camps, about Flloyd... if he wasn't interested after that she couldn't blame him, but at least next time she became interested in someone hopefully these old demons wouldn't come back again.
She took a deep breath. The situation was somewhat exagerated in her mind due to not being properly awake yet... but she knew it was now or never while the fear was still pumping through her. "Luke..." she murmered." I think I need to tell you some things..."

As Raina slowly calmed and came down from the screaming and crying to just gentle sobbing Luke continued to hold her, his right hand gently rubbing her back in a circular motion as he rocked back and forth with her.
"Someone shot her? Who in the world would she be dreaming about that would shoot her?" Luke wondered to himself as he continued to murmur soothing words in the young woman's ear, "Who could ever want to hurt her?"
In all the times Luke had rushed in to defend people on the street and save them from danger he had never felt this protective towards anyone. There had been women he escorted to events but in almost every case their evening together ended with his limo dropping the woman off at her own home before going back to his house. He didn't know whether what he felt for this woman would go anywhere beyond just a friendship but he did know that what they had was already something precious and he didn't want to ever lose it.
"Luke... I think I need to tell you some things..."
"You don't owe me anything Raina." Luke replied softly, never releasing his gentle but firm hold on her, "I'm your friend so I'm here if you need me but I'm not hurt if you need to keep secrets."
Even as the words came out of his mouth a part of his mind was screaming out against them. He did want more from this woman... he wanted to known about her past and he wanted her to be able to confide in him completely. He wanted to be the one she could run to for comfort and in just a few words he was completely blowing the opportunity!
"We're friends. No expectation and no pushing." He told himself sternly as he waited for Raina's answer, "I'm just here if she needs me... that's all."

Raina sniffled and spoke as she whiped her eyes with her wrists "I think I need to tell you for me." she replied. She didnt want to go on some lengthy explination about her past or every little gory detail but there were some things she really just needed to say.
"My first boyfriend was a cop here in New York." she began. "Just over a year ago." he she was nearly 23 and just over a year ago she was only then experieincing her first relationship. "He was nice... but totally afraid of mutants. I wasn't really feeling brave about my mutation back then...' she admitted while reaching for a box of Kleenix that was on the night stand by the bed.
"I liked him a lot but I didnt tell him the truth about myself. I figured if things got serious I could feel things out as I go and drop the bomb so to say when it seemed like the right time. I guess I waited too long because when the registration act passed our school was raided and who do you think was leading the raid?" she paused for the obvious and took another deep breath.
She wasn't shaking as much anymore, so talking about it was obviously helping. "He saw me like I was some criminal... like some animal... I guess it's only fair since I didn't tell him the truth... but I guess part of me... after everything that happened..." she thought back to that night at his apartment "thought he'd still care." she finished.
"He shot me with some sort of tranq gun and the last thing I saw before blacking out was him pointing it at me. I use to dream about it all the time but I hadn't in a few months so I never expected I'd have a Rupert dream while I was here. I feel safe here. Maybe that's why it happened... it snuck up on me." she explained apologetically. "There was a lot of things that went down between me and him at the camps..." she wondered if she should explain about the miscariage but decided that it could wait if at all. "and when I got out I was obviously messed up. I thought I could have a surgery to make my mutation go away. Like if I could just be human he'd take me back right? I don't think I really wanted things to be back the way they were... I just have this naive brain where everything is nice and people only have the best intentions so seeing Rupert in that dark light made me snap a little and my only way to put things back to normal was to be something he could approve of."
She got a little desgusted with herself at that point and straightened up still leaning on Luke. "I'm over it. I think I'm over it. I feel like I'm over it. But just sometimes... when bad things happen... Iguess I sorta flash back and those old fears sneak up on me."
She was proud of how she explained everything. She'd given him enough information that he could hopefully gain some insight, but not so much that he knew more than he needed to.
"there's one more thing." as if explaining about your psychotic ex wasn't enough. "I'm engaged."
she went silent. "Not, engaged engaged like how they do it here... you know people fall in love guy pops the question... but the bad kind of engaged where someone else makes the decision for you." she thought carefully on how to explain the rest knowing this would likely answer some questions for him but also bring up more. "Arranged marriage I guess is what they call it." she said. "but... it's not valid... so long as I never go home." she looked sad for a moment. "Its a friend of mine, and my brothers actually... I spoke about him earlier Flloyd. He's a nice guy actually once you get past the mutation but he was brought up being told always that I'd be his wife. He took care of me lots as a kid and when I left the tribe he went looking. I think he honstly does care for me but it's pretty deluded."
She thought of her recent experieince with Flloyd and decided that didn't need to be explained. "Anyway, my brother helped me figure out that it's void if I'm not an active member of the tribe. I don't think Flloyd would make me do anything I didn't want to either... but he still hangs around a lot and treats me like I'm a fiance. He's not my boyfriend or anything. I don't love him. Well, at least not like that. He's kinda like the second older brother I don't need." she laughed.
This was a lot to process and she was absolutley terrified given her past two experieinces... at what Luke's reaction would be.

As Raina began to speak, Luke just remained silent as he reverted back to just being a good listener. If she had to get something off of her chest for her own self then he was more than willing to be taken in to her confidence. It was obvious that the first revelation was a big step for her but it really wasn't that big an issue to him.
"She fell for a mutant hating cop... no big problem. Anyone can fall for anyone if the conditions are right I suppose." Luke thought to himself, his arms never leaving their place around Raina. She wasn't pushing him away so either she didn't realize he had his arms around her or she found them comforting... hopefully the latter.
The fact Raina had tried to remove her mutation wasn't an issue either... it was something of a surprise but it wasn't something that would change the way Luke felt about her. Once again, when people are in love, or think they're in love they can do very strange things. Even without love affecting your judgement there were plenty of mutants in the world that would give anything just to be 'normal'.
But, as fate would have it, it was just as Luke thought she was finished talking that she finally dropped the bombshell that completely threw him for a loop.
"There's one more thing. I'm engaged."
A detached part of Luke's mind wondered if she could feel the fact that his heart had stopped beating and his breath was frozen in his lungs. She had told him there were no other suitors? She had even said she'd dress to match him at the birthday party. Was this girl toying with his emotions? Leading him on?
Even as all those thoughts rushed through his brain Raina began to explain. At first, the words didn't seem to truly be hitting home but as the meaning of what she was saying began to sink into his brain Luke felt himself relax. Raina hadn't chosen to become engaged and that was all that really mattered in his eyes. If her parents wanted to arrange something that was their business but what was most important was what she felt in her heart.
"He's kinda like the second older brother I don't need." Raina finished with a laugh that sounded at least a little tenative. Luke could guess that she was waiting for his reaction and almost without thinking he knew what to do and what to say.
Slowly relaxing his arms enough that he could pull back and 'look' directly into the woman's face he kept his face blank for a moment before a kind smile slowly moved over his features.
"I'm not either one of those guys Raina." Luke said, doing his best to make his cloudy eyes look down into her own, "I'll be completely honest and say that I like you... I like you more than any woman I've ever met. You intrigue me and make me think about things in ways I never have before. I'd love to date you at some point but, more than anything I want to be your friend. I'm not going to push you away and I'm not going to try to push you into something you're not ready for."
After dropping his own bombshell of sorts it was time to address some of the issues she had brought up. Two of them really didn't matter... ex-boyfriend and arranged fiance were minor issue but he knew she's be wondering what his opinion on her operation was.
"I don't look down on you for wanting to erase your mutation." His voice remained as gentle and caring as he could make it while his arms were still looped loosely around her waist, "A lot of people wish they could be normal and they would do anything to be that way. I've said before, my mutation is easy. I can blend in and fit in anywhere that I want to. I like you Raina, and none of what you said is gonna change that."

Raina sat silently as Luke reacted to everything she said. She felt at times like she was babbling because he was so quiet, gentle, and a good listener. he began to let her know that none of these things really concerned him and that he still liked her.
When he confessed to really likeing her she was a bit confused. She could totally feel the energy between them but she wasn't sure if he meant it romantically or as a friend as he continued talking about being a friend. He didn't want to push her into anything- and that was good but she wasnt sure what that meant either.
Maybe she was just a little blinded herself right now by all her emotions. It had taken a lot of bravery to explain these things to Luke and though she felt comfortable with Luke she was eager to jump to the next thing and stop feeling so vulnerable.
He did say he'd love to date her right? Well maybe they could consider this a date. A I promise to never drown you again date. She was relieved he didn't judge her mutation, and relieved that he still liked her none the less.
"Well then I guess telling you I'm really a man wont be a problem.' she joked with heavy sarasim standing up. "Thanks for listening, and for everything today Luke." she said feeling still a bit shakey and weak. "..and I like you a lot too." she said flashing a smile.
She felt a little clearer in the head stepping away from him. the moment had been so charged she thought she might kiss him. She wouldn't want him to think she was doing it out of some false sense of vulnerability or a twisted fear. If she was going to make a real move on Luke Jacobs... she was going to do it right!
"well, now that we've been below sea level, nearly died, and been figuritively shot while was it- the phantom of the opera?- plays... what do you say we get moving to get me a dress?"

"She likes me too?" Luke thought as a spark of excitement settled itself in his chest, "Then maybe... just maybe..."
"Did the sound track spark your dream?" Luke asked suddenly as he realized that Raina had said she was shot while the 'Phantom of the Opera' was playing. If he had any idea that she would be susceptible to the music that he never would have turned it on. The very idea that he had been part of the cause of her nightmare was... well to horrible to think about.
Things were moving so fast that Luke's mind just kept whirling and as she mentioned buying a dress his subconscious immediately brought back the image of her in a long evening gown, just like he had envision in his dream. "Some day I'll take her somewhere where she has the opportunity to dress like that... I might even buy the dress for her." Luke thought as he firmly placed that particular dream on the back burner. For now he was going to enjoy the evening with Raina in whatever dress she happened to like.
"Well before we go to get you a dress I think there's one little detail we need to take care of first." Luke said firmly as his mind settled on the path he wanted to take. It was dangerous and more than a little risky but he felt like it was a good time to chance it.
Walking back over to stand near Raina he look down at her and gave the woman his most winning smile. "Raina... would you allow me the privilege of buying you something really nice to wear followed by my escorting you out for a night on the town on what I hope will be the first of many dates between us as we consider the possibility of being more than just friends?"
In one fell swoop he had laid it all on the line... his feeling were clearly stated with no hidden agendas. It was up to Raina to either accept or reject him with hopefully just as much directness as he had already shown.

Raina thought for a moment about the music "I don't think it triggered it. Usually I sleep right through background noise.. it probably just filtered it's way through once I started getting close to waking up. I usually have dreams when I'm sleeping lighter... well at least dreams that I can remember." she thought out loud.
""Well before we go to get you a dress I think there's one little detail we need to take care of first." Raina looked up a little fearful. Was he going to be upset with her about this afternoon now that he'd regained his strength? Was he going to say he decided after everything he didn't want to go out tonight? Maybe he was over tired.... she waited anxiously.
""Raina... would you allow me the privilege of buying you something really nice to wear followed by my escorting you out for a night on the town on what I hope will be the first of many dates between us as we consider the possibility of being more than just friends?"
Raina cocked her head to the side ever so slightly and blinked. Wow. well... that cleared up a few things. He really was interested in dating her and though they'd been sending each other signals the past few days she couldn't have seen this coming. Was that the near drown victim talking? She couldn't be sure... nearly dying had that sort of an affect on a person... but her heart started beating so fast and her hands started to jitter a little and she knew her voice was going to betray her before her brain even had a chance to catch up.
"I'd...." she paused not on purpose but at mere shock that Raina was about to go on an actual and officially planned first date. "Love too." she exclaimed. "I'm not sure about you buying me a dress." she chuckled. "You can't see the price tag! What if I choose something rediculous?" she never would. "But I'd love to go out on a night on the town with the possibility of other nights on the town- maybe for my birthday-" she added "while considering the possibility of being more than just friends"
So this was how it worked. This was how real people- mutants- went on dates, started relationships, decided if someone fit them or not. It wasn't that the concept was at all forien to Raina... she just never usually had the chance to experieince it in the traditional order.
She was happy all over and tingled from her head to her toes. She knew he likely couldn't see the look on her face of the movement of her eyes but she darted them all over him anyway. She wondered if he knew that if they wanted to be technical about it they'd already kissed and filed that little thought away for later for teasing.

Had he heard right? Had Raina really just said yes to going out with him? Inwardly, Luke wanted to pump his fist in celebration... he wanted to cheer, or yell, or something. Just about anything would do as long as he got to express the excitement that was suddenly coursing through his veins.
"Well if you don't want me buying you a gift for the first date that's OK but if you would accept it I definitely wouldn't be worried about the price. You'd never go taking advantage of a poor blind man." Luke teased in response with a broad smile on his face, "If it helps you could always just consider it an early birthday gift."
This was amazing... but what time was it? Luke's internal clock was all out of whack thanks to his near drowning experience and he really had no idea how late it was or how much time they had before the Jazz club would open.
"I'm fine for leaving right now... um, will we be coming back here before going to the jazz club because of we won't be then I really need to change before we go."
Come to think of it, Luke knew he probably needed to change even if they were coming back. Sweat pants and a t-shirt were perfect for just lounging around the house but wearing that kind of ensemble while out shopping was not the norm... especially if you were shopping in nicer stores to get something a little more formal to wear.
"And do you want anything to wear over your... jumpsuit? I can't offer much but I have T-Shirts you could always knot to make them fit a little better if you're interested." Luke offered as he prayed that Raina would look at the clock on the nightstand. Unfortunately it wasn't one of the special clocks like he had in his room where it would announced the time audibly but it would be the correct time since it connected by satellite to the atomic clock in order to maintain pinpoint accuracy.

"Well, I guess if it's a birthday present." she agreed feeling a little guilty but excited at the same time. She did a little twirl "it's been a while since I've worn a dress." she admitted. "It'll be neat!"
This really was a first date. She was so excited! Her mind filled with images of the jazz club and what it would be like. She couldn't wait to show Luke. There would be some acts there tonight that she was sure he'd like.
"I'm fine for leaving right now... um, will we be coming back here before going to the jazz club because of we won't be then I really need to change before we go."
Raina glanced at the clock. "it's seven." she announced. "We should have plenty of time to go shopping and come back, or if you' dlike to get dressed now and you let me drive your car I can change wherever I buy the dress and put my clothes in the car." she thought again, "We could get a cab but it may take longer to get there and back... It does start at 7 and the openings are usually great. "
She gave a stretch. "I think I'm fine with this, you cant see the colours but it actually looks pretty appropriate." she grinned. "I might look a little like that Julia Roberts movie... pretty woman? hehe if the nice rich guy takes me to the fancy store in his clothes." She laughed.

"Well if we're gonna have time to come back here then let me just go throw on some other pants and some shoes and I'll be all set to go." Luke said with a grin as he turned to walk out of the room. Pausing in the doorway, he turned his head as though glancing back at Raina. "Besides... if you were changing clothes in the car it would be awful tempting to watch." He finished in an obvious tease for moving quickly into the living room before she could respond.
"I'm going on a date with Raina!" He mentally congratulated himself, the smile never leaving his face as he closed the master bedroom door and made his way over to the dresser. If their relationship continued for a little while then maybe he'd have a chance to take her to one of the fancy dinners he occasionally had to attend... it would either be her going with him or going by himself because there was no way he could show up with some other woman on his arm. Before he had done it simply to maintain appearances but those were of no importance when compared with the possibility of ever hurting Raina.
As soon as he had picked out a pair of jeans Luke pulled off his sweatpants and threw them in the closet for the time being. "I'll sleep in those tonight... then into the hamper." He thought as he tried to control his mind at least a little bit. In a matter of second he had pulled on his jeans followed by a simple pair of leather sandals. They weren't the classiest thing in the world but they were at least a little dressier than flip flops.
As Luke opened the door and stepped back out into the living room he slipped his wallet in the back left pocket and smiled winning in the direction of Raina before pulling car keys out of his pocket and tossing them toward her. "Ready? I think you can handle the driving."

Raina laughed at Luke's teasing and watched him walk to his bedroom with a silly grin on her face. As soon as he was away she got butterflies in her stomach. "Oh my, keep your head on girl." she told herself feeling nervous. "it's not like he hasn't seen you naked already!"
When he came back out Raina felt the pangs of anticipation. "Ok, i'm ready, lead the way!" she said catching the keys

(OOC: GModing permission noted and accepted. Prepare for shopping center arrival.)
The two people walked out of the apartment and over to the elevator, chatting amiably about whatever little things came to mind. Even though the big step of making this evening an official date had been made it seemed like both had retreated back to the channels of friendship that had been working so well between them.
"You pick the shopping center milady." Luke said a few minutes later as the two climbed into the PT Cruiser, "I'm sure you're more experienced in choosing women's wear than I am."
Traffic had lightened up from the earlier rush hour and, for New York at least, the drive was pretty easy. The sun had set not that long before so there was still a tinge of light on the horizon but what shone out more spectacularly than that was the lights of the city. New York was one of those places where things never completely stopped or came to a halt. 'A City That Never Sleeps' one person had described it rather accurately.
"The 'Jacobs & Jacobs' main office is about three or four blocks down that way." Luke provided something of a commentary as the vehicle passed on particular cross street, "Most people don't like to see me there to much anymore so I pretty much have a hand off policy with the company. Miss Langstan keeps me informed of what's going on but if there's one thing Uncle Oliver is good at its making money so I don't have to do a whole lot. Since it is technically public knowledge that I have the X-Gene the board thought it would be best for me to stay away unless absolutely necessary."
It felt strange to basically be barred from the company his family had founded several generations before but that was the way things worked. And of course, unknown to anyone but Miss Langstan and also Luke's attorney, he was the majority shareholder so he could go in and completely replace the board of directors if he so wished. At the moment and in the foreseeable future there would be no reason to take such action but it was comforting to know that he could regain control if something were to happen.
"I guess that's why I ended up taking on my night time pursuits... when there's no set schedule you have to be up it's very easy to perform random patrols and help out where you can."
Inwardly Luke had to wonder what Raina thought of his night 'activities'. They had seen each other at the meeting back at the mansion the other day but there had been little time for conversation. He wasn't sure if she had been purposely busy to avoid him or had simply been truly busy but that didn't matter. Raina was going on a date with him and that was the important fact he had to keep reminding himself of.
Finally after the time driving Raina announced that they had arrived at their destination. "So how nice of a birthday present do you want?" Luke asked with a mischievous grin on his face, "Am I expected to pay for undergarments as well as the outfit or are we just sticking with outerwear?"
