The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

Chris was sitting outside at a table. It was a nice sunny day. The wind was blowing, though not hard enough to be a big problem. There didn't seem to be many clouds in the sky; however, the smog always made it look like there were clouds. He waited for the waiter or waitress to come to his table and take his order. The coffee shop was busy so he didn't mind waiting longer than usual to get his order in. Once the waiter came over to where he was patiently sitting he ordered. "I'll have a cappuccino and a muffin." He said to him. The waiter wrote it down and scurried off to place the order as well as take more orders. After waiting another ten minutes the same waiter came over to him and handed him his order. "Sorry it's taken so long. We're not usually this swamped." The waiter said handing Chris the drink and food. "Uh huh." Chris said indifferently to the waiter.
As he took a sip of his coffee the waiter left him alone to see to other customers. Chris ate his muffin and sipped his coffee slowly. It was definitely worth the wait. He watched the people bustle by on their way to their destinations. The variety of people in the city never ceased to amaze him. Short and tall, fat and skinny, business men and hippies. Attractive and homely. All of it was metaphorically, and literally, in the eye of the beholder. He finished his muffin and coffee rather quickly. After paying his tab and giving the waiter a couple dollars tip he went about his previous way. Chris was aimlessly walking down the street, blending in with all the other people that happened to be on the street he continued his self-guided tour of his new home city.

Kealey was doing the same thing she'd done every day since she'd come to New York. She was sitting in a small coffee shop, eating a pastry and drinking a cup of coffee while she people watched. It was a new coffee shop. Kealey tried to mix it up every other week, so nobody got to know her too well. Sometimes she was able to do some good as she sat, usually simple things like alleviating a child's fear or a mother's anxiety. Kealey never knew what caused those feelings, it was the curse of her gift, but she figured that what she was doing had to be a good thing.
It wasn't a long sit, it never was because when she sat in one place for too long the emotions of the people surrounding her started to close in. Constant movement was almost a must, especially when people were bustling as they were on their way here, there, or everywhere.
Paying for her coffee, Kealey did her best to ignore the feelings from the man behind the coffee bar. It was odd for her to feel attraction from men, and lustful thoughts. The nun in her always wanted to shy away from those things, but the woman in her was flattered by the attention. It also helped her ego to know that the outfits she put so much time into each morning did draw a little attention from time to time.
Pushing her blonde hair back as she made her way out into the street, Kealey fished around in her bag for the keys to the library section she'd need to open when she returned from lunch. The wind suddenly blew up, however and the flood of hair in her face blocked Kealey's view as she walked.
Struggling to push the hair out of her face, Kealey kept walking, and therefore didn't see the young man walking down the street towards her until it was far too late.
The collison wasn't violent per se, but Kealey sure felt it! The heels she was wearing lost their traction on the concrete and with a startled yelp she felt herself falling backwards, landing on the padded end of her spine with a solid, "Oof."
There she sat for a few moments, wondering if there was anything hurt worse than her pride. The wind had died down, of course, and Kealey reached up to push her hair out of her face, clearing her line of vision. "I'm so sorry..." she stammered, embarrassment flooding her as she groped around to try and decipher exactly how the person she'd ran into felt about the situation.
He was young, probably no more than 20 at the most and Kealey regarded him from her vantage point on the ground. "I'm a bit of a klutz."
Chris continued walking through the street. He was looking around and saw that it wasn't rush hour. The wind had picked up and he looked around watching the people move around. He was adeptly dodging most of the people that were walking around like robots programmed by their bosses to do their jobs. The wind had picked up and he had stopped paying attention to the people that were around. Shawn ducked his head down a little so that he didn't have to worry about getting dust or anything else in his eyes. Since he wasn't looking forward he was bumping into more people. It wasn't making them very happy with him, however, they continued on their way like it hadn't happened.
Suddenly Chris bumped into a young woman. She was older than him but she looked only a few years older than him. Chris stopped walking when he ran into her and even stumbled back a little bit. He looked around to see that the young woman had fallen to the ground. She was attractive, getting her blond hair out of her face and looking back up at him.
Chris looked at the woman, who immediately started to apologize to him. Chris smiled at her. "It's okay. It's my fault I wasn't paying attention." He said to her. He looked her over from head to toe. She was wearing very stylish looking clothing. The blond was wearing skinny jeans with turned down boots over the top, a lightweight sweater under a jacket with fur trim, and heals. He held out his hands to help her up. He wasn't upset about it, perhaps a little embarrassed, but it was more awkward. Of course the one person I knock over happens to be an attractive woman. I couldn't have been some random guy. He thought. He quickly dismissed those thoughts and smiled at her. "Don't worry about it. It was bound to happen to someone eventually." He told her trying to make her feel less embarrassed about running into him.

The man wasn't phased by the bump. It figured, Kealey got a lock on his emotions and felt slight embarrassment mixed with regret and genuine good humor. Relaxation was evident too and something else that made Kealy almost sigh out loud...attraction. It didn't matter, she'd learned a long time ago not to judge a book by its cover. Just because someone was attracted to her didn't mean they were automatically going to treat her like a piece of meat. It had happened more than she wanted to admit since she'd come to New York, but Kealey was still optimistic enough to give at least this young man the benefit of the doubt. She owed him something for her lack of attention, after all.
The man held out his hands to help her up and Kealey looked at them for a moment a little dumb. It was rare that she elected for voluntary contact, she chewed her bottom lip as she considered for a second, then took the hands, using them for leverage as she pulled herself to her feet.
Now that she was up, the guy wasn't only trying to make her feel better about running into him, he was taking the blame for the accident completely on his shoulders. Kealey looked at him closely and realized that he was telling the truth, there was no deceit or anything that could be equated to a malicious intent, at least that she could tell.
She hadn't let go of the young man's hands yet and she realized that with a startled little chuckle and released them, blushing and taking a step back. The wind had died down by this point, so Kealey occupied herself and took the opportunity to catch her hair in a loose ponytail at the nape of her neck so it wouldn't blow away if the wind picked up again.
"Thank you for your help, though I can't let you take all the blame. I was careless with this unruly mop" she said, reaching a hand back into her hair, "I'm Kealey, Kealey Quinn." she added, her accent thick even though her voice was soft.
It took the lady a while before she had decided to accept his help up. Why's she taking so long to decide. It doesn't seem like that hard of a question. He thought to himself. Before he knew it she had taken his hands and pulled herself up. He continued to smile at her as she used him for leverage to get up. There was definitely something different about her. He thought there must be since it took her so long to decide if she wanted help up. Especially since she thought it was her fault. He looked into her face and didn't noticed until she did that she was still holding his hands.
When she let go of his hands she was obviously embarrassed that she'd held on so long. It was easy to tell because of her blushing cheeks. She then spoke to him again,
"Thank you for your help, though I can't let you take all the blame. I was careless with this unruly mop" "I'm Kealey, Kealey Quinn."
He watched her put her hair in a pony tail. It was something that he'd seen a million times but he still enjoyed watching woman do that. When she spoke he noticed that she had a very distinct and strong accent. She also had a very quiet voice but the accent made it strong. "Hi Kealey. Nice to meet you. I'm Chris and I don't think it's unruly. In fact I think it looks nice. Especially pulled back like that." He told her. He couldn't help but smile at her when he said this. It was the truth and he seemed to have a certain habit, whether good or bad, of telling the truth. Many times he couldn't help it and he was often embarrassed by what he would end up saying. This was not the case right now, however, and he was happy that he was telling her this, no matter how forward he seemed. "I'm sorry but where's your accent from. Is it Irish? or Scottish?" He couldn't help asking because he knew it would bother him if he didn't find out.

Kealey could feel the pleasure the young man felt as she pulled her hair back into the ponytail. Kealey tilted her head as she looked at him, trying to figure out what had made him so happy. There were other feelings too, general well being, and now a strong current of curiosity running under everything else.
His name was Chris and Kealey smiled, "Chris." she repeated, trying the name out and smiling wider at the way that it rolled off her tongue. American names were so much more simple than some of the Irish ones she'd encountered back home.
Then the source of the curiosity was revealed and Kealey nodded her head, laughing softly at the question. It was one of the first things people always asked her and it made for good conversation. "I'm of Ireland. Actually just immigrated a couple of months ago."
Kealey studied the man, reveling in his emotions, he was far more centered than most of the people she ran into in New York. It was a large city and people had a tendency to let their emotions run away with themselves. This young man was sure of himself, and he seemed to be happy...something else that was becoming more and more rare as she encountered the general population in New York.
The confidence and general youth were refreshing, and Chris so far was unlike anyone she'd ever met. "What about you?" she asked with a smile, wanting to prolong the conversation, "Are you from New York? You don't seem to be rushing to get anywhere, and you offered an apology for the bump. Not typical characteristics of the locals."
When she repeated his name it sounded nice hearing her say it. With most people they just sort of spit out the words and didn't really take the time to listen to what they were saying. He listened to her and it was nice. He liked listening to her accent. Aside from it sounding a little funny it was entertaining to listen to.
"I'm actually not from here. That's why I cared that I knocked you down." He said giving a little chuckle. The New York people always seemed to be to busy to listen to other people or to help others out. "Nah, I'm in no rush. I'm from Texas actually. I agree, most people here are to busy to do anything about a bump like that." he said to her. he didn't want to stop their conversation because he wanted to learn more about her.
"So, where were you headed to before we bumped into each other? Off to meet someone? Parents? Boyfriend? Job interview?" He was just throwing out ideas as to where she was going. He honestly had no idea but wanted to keep talking to her. "What made you come to America?" He finally asked her before waiting for her answers.

Texas. It sounded like a foreign country to Kealey. Chris was from Texas and she was from Ireland and they were both in New York. In fact, out of the seemingly huge crowd of people, they'd ran into each other. He was friendly, he was nice, and his emotions betrayed nothing out of the ordinary. Kealey was suddenly excited, she may have met her first friend in New York City.
"Iv'e noticed that." Kealey said, referring to the fact that people in New York never stopped to smell the roses, figuratively speaking of course. "It's nice to meet someone a little different..." she added.
Kealey grinned when Chris launched into a fresh round of questions, he didn't want the conversation to end either, but when she heard the questions he was asking, Kealey frowned for a second before bursting into laughter. Odd reaction yes, but the myriad of questions was loaded...simply loaded.
"Exactly how much time do you have?" Kealey said, eyebrows raised at Chris as she considered his questions.
"The sweetened condensed version goes something like this." she continued with a thoughtful look, "I was going back to the library where I work to open back up after my lunch. I have no family, boyfriends, or even friends for that matter." The last question, pivitol...did she answer truthfully or pass on the carefully constructed story she'd told the people she'd needed to. Then confessed the lie later of course..Kealey looked at Chris thoughtfully, then did something she hadn't done since before she came to New York. She ignored the feelings she could read from the young man, and she spoke.
"Do you want the real story, or the one that I've been telling everyone?"
Chris listened to her comments. He listened to her short story. It seemed to pass by relatively quickly. It definitely was a short story. "Same here. I'm glad I found the one person that can appreciate slowing down for a minute." he said to her.
Kealey then started to laugh at his questions to her. It troubled him a little. A confused look came across his face. He wondered why she was laughing at the questions. He thought back to what he asked her and didn't see anything that was funny. He listened to her answer his questions. He gave a small chuckle when she asked how much time he had he said, "I've got all day."
The short version still seemed to contain a lot of information that he'd wanted to know. He was a little happier that Kealey didn't have a boyfriend, however, he wasn't that happy that she had no friends or family. She didn't specify whether there were none here or she didn't have any for one reason or another.
"Well, that depends. Is it a long story. Cause if it is, let's go with the real story. And after that maybe you can tell me the story you've told everyone else." He told her. He was hoping to get her to talk more. Chris was curious about this woman and wasn't going to try to let off until he got to the root of what was different about her.

He had all day. Kealey smiled at that, it wasn't very often that someone spoke to her long enough to know this much about her, let alone offer all the time left in a day. That was a great gift. Chris had been confused though, at what, Kealey couldn't figure out, again her powers frustrated her. The confusion was fading now and was replaced with amusement and contentedness and slight anticipation, excited anticipation. Kealey could feel it washing through her as she concentrated on it. It was always weird when other peoples' moods effected her that way.
As she spoke, Kealey could feel the small roller coaster of emotions Chris was going through with her story. People always reacted that way when she commented on her lack of family, she had to assume that was the connection between the story and the emotions. The thought of her parents and sister sent a shot of remourse through Kealey but she shook it off, one of her moods settling in would be a disaster at this happy moment.
Chris spoke and Kealey grinned again, brightly at his suggestion that she tell the long story...then the one she told everyone else. He really did want to spend more time with her. Kealey felt herself blushing and looked down at the ground, she was still so unaccustomed to the attentions of men. After years of a catholic school uniform and a novice's habit the street clothes she wore got her far more attention.
Kealey jingled her keys in her hand as she looked around and suddenly remembered that she was probably late returning from lunch. She shelved books in the seemingly endless stacks that occupied the metropolitin public library right smack dab in the middle of New York City and it was usually therapeutic solitude free of the emotions of others. Today, the solitude didn't seem so nice.
"I have to go back to work..." she said, face falling slightly, then brightening with an idea, "But you could come along if you want...I'm a cataloguer at the metropolitan Library...they don't mind if I talk on the job...you said you have all day...and I only work a couple more hours."
Kealey was slightly surprised at herself, asking an almost complete stranger to accompany her to her place of employ...what if the guy turned out to be a perv? Mother superior would have had a heart attack. Kealey resisted the urge to cross herself and smiled, at least Chris' emotions didn't portray him as a pervert of any kind.
"Well?" she said, anticipation coloring her features.
Chris was a little surprised by the fact that she didn't seem very sad about her parents. He didn't show that emotion at all on his face. He thought it was a good thing that she didn't dwell on this fact but was able to move on and look at the brighter side of life. He was enjoying listening to her. Her accent really held his attention. He also couldn't help but notice when she playing with the keys and books she had on her.
It didn't seem like that big of a move; however, it did seem like she was starting to get bored with him. He didn't think about this because he figured that she had work to do, unlike him, who only spent much of his free time walking around the city seeing the sites. Kealey surprised him with her statement about her work. He hadn't expected her to bring up her work, unless she was trying to get away from him. Which he thought was her motive for mentioning her work. That is until she blushed and invited him to go with her.
She looked expectantly at him, waiting for his answer. It was true he did say that he had the entire day free. Before he could answer her she seemed to be rushed and he could see the anticipation on her face as she waited for his answer. He was flattered that she had invited him there so he said. "Sure I'll come with you. Lead the way."

They were walking now, walking towards the place where Kealey worked. The library had been the most delightful thing to happen to her since she'd come to New York. The Mother Superior had written a hundred letters seeking employment for her when she'd decided New York was the place she'd wanted to be. Kealey had loved working with the children in Dublin, but she'd asked for something else when she decided to move to New York. This was perfection, and the old Mother had known that the peace that a job in a huge library would provide would be much appreciated.
Kealey realized she was being incredibly rude, inviting someone to walk with her and not speaking to them, "I guess I can start the story now. It's quite long." Kealey paused in thought for a moment, trying to find a place to start, "I suppose my story starts long before I got on a plane to come here." Kealey's eyes grew far away as she continued, "My mother, father, and sister were killed in an IRA bombing many years ago. Somehow I survived, they pulled me from the rubble and when I woke up in the hospital it was then that I discovered my gift." She paused and turned to look at Chris as they walked, "I hope you don't mind that. I am gifted, I'll understand if you want to leave me now. People in this country aren't as accepting of my talents a other places I've been."
Chris followed Kealey down the side walk. He passed people on the side walk but continued to walk with her in silence. Finally she started talking to him. She started telling her story. As far as she'd told, it was an interesting story. He'd heard about the IRA and what they did. They were pretty violent at times and they never seemed to get what they wanted. He felt sorry for her because she'd lost her parents in one of their attacks. He thought it was a little interesting that she'd managed to survive the attack.
Her gifts? What did she mean by that? Is she a mutant? He continued to wonder about it when she asked if he wanted to leave her. "What do you mean? Gifted. Like talented at sports or something?" He asked her. He had a strong feeling that she meant she was a mutant but he wanted to b sure that's what she meant. If she was a mutant then he would tell her that he was. Since he discovered his powers he had never been to inclined to show them off to people or even tell people about them.

One question...a single solitary question, but the answer presented many difficulties, but the possibility of so many opportunities too. Chris had felt sympathetic when she'd mentioned what had happened to her family. Kealey was grateful for the sympathy and even more grateful that she didn't sense any overwhelming pity. Pity was something she'd grown tired of very quickly as she'd grown.
There was curiosity now along with the question and the question itself seemed so innocent, too innocent and Kealey could feel the indecision radiating from ther young man walking beside her. She walked in silence a little ways as they moved up the steps and walked into the library.
Kealey smiled at her bosses and colleagues as they walked past them, nobody very surprised at Kealey's company. As a library, she'd always been known as incredibly helpful, her vast knowledge of literature making it easy for her to aid people looking for a specific topic.
Even if she hadn't been able to feel it, Kealey would have assumed Chris' curiosity had grown exponentially since he'd asked his question what seemed like ages ago now.
"It's not a physical talent." Kealey said once they were safely in the stacks and away from hearing, "They call people like me mutants here." she said softly as she went back to shelving a cart of returned books, "In the convent I was raised in, they called me a gift from God. I can tell what people are feeling. That kind of talent."
Chris continued to walk with Kealey towards the library. It didn't seem to take much time to get there. He wasn't sure if he'd asked something to personal for her to explain. Especially to someone that he'd just, quite literally, run into. Finally they'd arrived at the library. Although they passed some other workers in the library, none seemed to think anything of it. Perhaps she led people around may times here at work. After all that's basically what they're here for. To help others. He gave a courteous smile to a few of them.
Once they'd gotten somewhere where they wouldn't be overheard, Kealey started talking. Surprisingly, she was answering his question. while listening to her answer he smiled. He was happy because they had something else in common besides running into people on the street. "I think I know what you're talkin' about. I'm a mutant as well. Although my powers aint nearly as benign as your are." his southern drawl creeping in a little.
"So when you say you 'can tell what people are feeling' you mean like emotions? or their thoughts?" He'd never heard about a power like her's before. Then again, here were a lot of power he hadn't heard of yet. It was a simple question and he wanted to know more about her powers. Unfortunately he thought that he might have to explain more about his powers because of his vague hint at his own. He never enjoyed talking about that because he was always afraid that most people would freak out and treat him like a disease.
