There was something chasing after her. She didn't know what it was, but it was coming closer. She fled through the hallways of the school until she reached the staircase and started climbing up. And up. The staircase never seemed to end, but it was getting more and more narrow. Soon she wouldn't be able to keep going because she wouldn't fit...
She glanced backwards, she still couldn't see her pursuer. She fled onward. Through a cornfield. The leaves were golden and the ears were nothing but dried husks, scratching her, clinging to her with their insignificant wispy hairs. The corn knew that winter was near. The season of death was coming. The plants stood tall, sentinels unafraid of the death that awaited them, already golden, already anticipating the storm.
As she ran, the corn stalks that stood like soldiers became actual soldiers. They stood tall and straight in golden battle uniforms, their rifles resting, but ready, upon their shoulders. This was the human army, and she recognized many of their faces. Senators and representatives whom she had met many times stood ready. There were several of her old teachers with determined looks in their eyes. There was her father, standing straight and proud.
Behind the soldiers stood their families, spouses and children also dressed in gold, also bracing themselves for the future battles.
She ran past the army, her eyes burning with tears. Faster and faster. She had to get away. She couldn't stand to watch all those people get killed. - Katrina was clutching her blankets with tight fists, not quite awake. There were tears on her pillow. She knew it was just a dream. She could change it. She could make it better. Save all those people. - She stopped running and slowly turned back toward the field that would soon see battle. She was determined to make them see sense. They had to listen before they started fighting.
Slowly, slowly she made her way back. It felt like she was moving through water, her feet were heavy with the effort to change the outcome of the dream.
There was a figure standing there. A woman that she knew. Iris! She ran toward her. Iris could help stop the armies. She open her mouth to yell out, but at that moment the older woman turned toward her, her eyes a brilliant emerald green and she smiled with fanged teeth. - Katrina awoke for real this time. The images from the dream quickly faded away, but the sense of unease remained. She glanced at the clock. It would hardly even be worth going back to sleep now. Although it was still dark outside, it was almost time for her to start getting ready for her classes. She had a history test today, too.
