The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

It seemed everything in this place echoed, making identifying individual sets of footstep a bit difficult. Still, Neena managed to recognize a certain hurried gait, long before she heard the voice to match.
“Neena?”
She turned her head, and smiled. "Hello, m'friend. Long time, no see. Literally."
She twisted in her seat to face him as he sat. For a long moment neither said anything. Then she heard him sigh slightly. She arched one eyebrow.
"What? Is there something on my face?" Despite the tease, there was an underlying tone in her voice, something akin to concern. Not one to be around the bush, she asked, "Are you still wanting to drink?"
She knew they wouldn't allow alcohol in the prison, though the inmates likely would be able to find some substitute. But that wasn't what she was interested in. She continued to tap the little box in her hand.

"Hello, m'friend. Long time, no see. Literally."
Sam just let soundless laugh as Neena showed him that she hasn’t changed much since he was gone. She still made the same jokes that would cheer any one up.
"Are you still wanting to drink?"
The smile on Sam’s face faded into a straight face showing little emotion. Sam had to think for a few seconds before he lied to her, “Not at all.” Sam hated to lie to Neena but he didn’t want her to worry and this was his burden to bear, Sam wanted to get through this on his own so he could return to the X-Mansion with his head held high.
Sam then said to Neena with a smile, “If I really wanted a drink I would just escape, that’s probably the biggest fear of everyone here. A mutant using his powers to break out.” Sam looked over to the entrance of the room gazed upon the armed guards silently doing their duty. Sure if Sam wanted to have a talk to them they were nice enough but Sam could sense a certain amount of fear floating around them like they knew Sam was going to snap one day and turn them all into frozen popsicles.
Sam looked back to Neena, “So have a missed anything of importance at the mansion?’ This was Sam’s attempt to change the subject off the matter of Sam’s current situation. He also wanted to hear about the others, even though Sam ran away he still regarded them as family and friends.
“If I really wanted a drink I would just escape, that’s probably the biggest fear of everyone here. A mutant using his powers to break out.”
Another blink, followed by one more, and continued tapping.
“So have a missed anything of importance at the mansion?’
Neena arched one eyebrow. The tapping still momentarily. She tilted her head, as if regarding him.
Then she reached out and landed a solid thwack! on his head with her staff.
"Hippo crap," she snorted (her version of 'BS'). "You're a bad liar, Sam, and I don't need my sight to see that. If you can't trust your friends enough with the truth, how do you expect them to help you? And before you say, 'It's my problem to deal with', just remember you didn't deal with it very well on your own the first time."
She leaned one elbow on the table, her chin on her hand, and sighed deeply.
"And everyone is fine at the Mansion. Just the usual amount of uncoordinated-young-mutant destruction and shenanigans. You haven't missed anything vital."

If you can't trust your friends enough with the truth, how do you expect them to help you? And before you say, 'It's my problem to deal with', just remember you didn't deal with it very well on your own the first time."
Sam let out a pained gasp as he grabbed the back of his, “Neena was that nessicary?” Sam wasn’t to surprised that she could tell she was lying, been close to ten years now and somehow Sam could never get a lie past Neena. “Yeah, I was lying you got me, but what did you want me to say? You wanted to hear the truth?” Sam was getting a little flustered as his voice raised and in result the guards from outside pulled out their tasers and night sticks. “You want to hear how every second I think about anything I somehow go back to thinking about a drink, every second it’s burning me up inside.” Sam’s voice dropped back down to his normal prison toned voice, “I’m sorry didn’t mean to get upset.”
Sam took a deep breath and calmed himself noticing that more guards gathered by the door ready to come in if he was going to get out of hand. Sam inhaled again, “I am going to A.A. meetings everyday and I am trying to get my self sober for good, I promise when I get out I will not touch the stuff when I am out.” Sam waited for Neena’s response almost sure she was going to hit him again.
"Yes," she replied without skipping a beat, and then added "Haven't you ever watch Lion King?"
“Yeah, I was lying you got me, but what did you want me to say? You wanted to hear the truth? You want to hear how every second I think about anything I somehow go back to thinking about a drink, every second it’s burning me up inside.”
She didn't flinch as his voice rose, though she picked up the shuffling outside the door. What were the guards so worried about?
“I’m sorry didn’t mean to get upset.”
Neena waved away the apology. "No worries." She could tell he was trying to regain his composure, steady himself again.
“I am going to A.A. meetings everyday and I am trying to get my self sober for good, I promise when I get out I will not touch the stuff when I am out.”
"I don't want to hear a promise that you won't touch it again. It won't be that easy," she scolded, then backed off for a moment. She hadn't intended on giving him lecture, but apparently she was a bit more upset than she thought. When she spoke up again, her tone of voice had softened considerably.
"What I want to hear is that you won't run again. That you'll let your friends help next time. That you'll let me help next time."
She held out her free hand across the table.
"Deal?"
A small smile tugged at the corner of her mouth as she added, "And quit cringing. I'm not gonna hit you again. Not hard anyway."

"I don't want to hear a promise that you won't touch it again. It won't be that easy,"
Sam was a little floored about how calmly Neena was handling the whole situation but that was Neena and that was one of Sam’s favorite qualities about her. Neena always found a way to surprise Sam with the amount of kindness and understanding that was so abundant in her.
Sam looked to the glass doored windows and saw that the extra guards were now dispersing but the ones that remained kept their hands on their weapons. Sam eased a bit in his seat and then looked back to Neena as she spoke. "What I want to hear is that you won't run again. That you'll let your friends help next time. That you'll let me help next time."
Once again Neena had a way of making things seem a simple as they should be. Sam smiled a little bit, glad that she cared about him. A strong emotion over came Sam he couldn’t figure out what it was but he liked the feeling he suddenly felt like him old self again.
"Deal?"
Sam let out a small chuckle as the strange emotion warmed his insides. He smiled at Neena and shook her hand, “Neena, it sounds like a good deal to me.” Sam looked to the door as a guard walked in, “Sam you got 5 more minutes.” Just as fast as the man opened the door he closed it just as fast.
Neena nodded her head sharply. "Good. And don't you forget this time, or else." She shook her staff at him in warning.
Her eyes moved slightly as the guard entered with a five minute warning, and nodded.
"That's my cue to skidoo. Oh! Before I forget...."
She finally held out the little box for him to take. But as he took it, she held onto the other end for a moment.
"I'll come visit again, and we'll talk about things other than alcohol. But-" and her voice took on what people called her lecture mode, "-the next time I see you outside of the prison fence, I expect this box to be full. If its not, I'm gonna do a lot more than just bonk ya on the head. Ya got that?"
She waited for an affirmative before releasing her hold on the carved, A.A. medallion case. Yes, she was still upset with him. Yes, she felt more than a little betrayed at his unexplained disappearance. Yes, she was very disappointed in his lapse in judgment and where he'd ended up because of it. No, she wasn't sure she trusted him not to have a relapse or three once this was behind him.
But.... they were friends. At the very least, she owed him support on the path to recovery.
She stood and walked around the table, arms open for a hug. Then she smacked him again, though not as hard.
"And quit scaring the guards so much, ya Lunkhead. You're supposed to be proving that not all mutants are dangerous, remember?" But she was smiling as she gave him a quick peck on the cheek. "See ya next time."

Sam hesitated for a second before he put his hand on the black box. But when Neena didn’t let go Sam listened and took in every word she had to say. He was curious on what the box had to be full of so Sam answered, “Yes Ma’m” in a stern tone.
Taking the box Sam looked at it and a single tear streaked down his face, it was a box with 12 vacant slots that looked like large medals or coins could be placed. At the top of the box their was a small sign saying ‘One Day At A Time”. Sam wiped the tear from his face and smiled at Neena as she stood up and walked around the table for a hug. Sam gave her a big hug and then was pelted in the head by Neena. Though it wasn’t as hard as the first one it still stung a bit. "And quit scaring the guards so much, ya Lunkhead. You're supposed to be proving that not all mutants are dangerous, remember?"
Sam just grinned at her comment, he didn’t mean to do it but for some reason the guards would just expect the worst from him, even though at one point they relied on him to help them return some of the escapees when there was a prison break.
The next thing Neena did took Sam by complete surprise, she kissed him on the cheek. Sam thought for a while Neena couldn’t do anything that would surprise him but this single move threw that theory out of the window. Sam didn’t really know how to take this he just stood their until she spoke again.
"See ya next time."
Sam snapped to and waved to Neena waving, “Bye Neena, I’ll look forward to it.” With that she left and Sam went to go meet Kevin to help him with the floor chores.

It had been a few hours since Sam saw Neena and the lasting cheer she brought whenever she would talk with him didn’t seem to leave. Even in the gloomy prison Sam still had a smile on his face. After dropping off the gracious gift Neena got him in his room Sam realized that A.A. meeting was going to start soon.
Sam ended up being a few minutes late to the meeting but ever one still greeted him as Kevin said, “Right now all of us are hear we can start.” Sam smiled at Kevin and sat down in his normal chair across from his kind gray cellmate.
The talk seemed to be shorted and more interesting than usual which struck Sam as a little odd; he actually seemed to be interested about the life of his fellow inmates. After four stories from for different people it was Sam’s turn. Kevin smiled and said, “Sam, have anything you would like to share today?” Sam sat up in his chair and said, “Yeah I do.”
The people around the circle were very tentative to what Sam had to say, Sam started about how he resorted to drinking because it was his way of emotionally removing himself from various situations in his life. Kevin smiled and the guy next to Sam patted Sam on the back. Sam then took a deep breath and added, “I’m sorry for not taking this as serious as I should have.” It was completely silent for couple seconds and then Kevin spoke, “Sam I not only I but the group is so proud of you.” Kevin got up and walked over to Sam and stuck out his hand for a shake. Hesitant at first but then realized what Kevin just had said. Sam clapped his hand into a shake with Kevin’s hand then Kevin turned around sat down and then let the others speak. After everyone said their piece “Alright all I think that’s enough for the night.” With that Sam and Kevin headed back to their cell.

(2018) Days turned into weeks and weeks turned into months it was now the last day, Sam would be released from prison in only a few short hours. Sam had been making steady improvement when it came to talking in the A.A. group and people actually listened to him when he gave out criticism. The guards had been ridiculously relaxed when ever he was around and almost four hours a day Sam was meditating. No longer was Sam the angry man he was before, he was now calm and conserved when it came to anything in prison.
Sam woke up in and then jumping from his bed landed on his feet and examined the box that Neena had giving him a few months ago, it was now full of all the medals for completing the twelve steps of becoming alcohol free. Sam yawned and stretched as he looked outside, it was a clear day with blue sky. Birds could be heard singing their songs in the distance. Sam smiled and looked to Kevin who was now walking up.
“Hey guy how are you doing this morning?” Sam smiled as Kevin asked him the same question every morning. Sam let out another big yawn, “Doing great Kevin, how about you?” Kevin let out a big grin standing up and patting Sam on the back, “Doing fantastic, you excited for today?” Sam’s smile faded he was so used to prison life he was afraid he wouldn’t be able to cope with the real world, but of coarse he didn’t voice his fear to Kevin, “Yeah, I’ll come visit you and everyone else, I already talked to the warden he said he would be thrilled if I stopped in every now and then for an A.A. meeting.”
Kevin let out a small chuckle as he guessed what was wrong, “Fraid you won’t be able to handle it out there?” Sam laughed and nodded a little as Kevin spoke, “well you should be it’s very hard life for the inmates once they get out, society can’t handle us once we are released and often we find our self back in here.” Sam nodded as Kevin’s wisdom. Sam often met several people who had been in and out several times in their life because they couldn’t find means to make money on the outside and often resorted to crime to live.
Sam looked to Kevin realizing in the two years he had been in prison he never asked the old man what he did to be in jail for so long. Sam waited for a second and asked Kevin, “Out of the Two years, I’ve been here I never heard or asked about what you did to end up in here so now being my last day and all I wanted to know what you did.” Sam kept eye contact with Kevin as Kevin smiled a sad smile and said, “I killed a man.” Sam was a little surprised that Kevin his cellmate who always seemed kind and generous killed a man. Sam was about to ask why when a tear came fell from Kevin’s eyes as he sat down on his bed. “He killed my wife, he was nothing more than a rapist and murder, so once I saw my wife’s mangled body lying in our bed I tracked him down and killed him without second thought, ended up getting life in here.” Kevin paused wiping a tear from his face as he continued to speak. “I loved my wife so much, I just fell apart when I saw her lifeless body. The messed up thing was when I killed him, I felt sick to my stomach, he was a monster and I killed him. So what does that make me?” Sam didn’t say anything but just listened as he was so moved by Kevin and his words, which surged with raw emotions. “My biggest regret was killing him, I see his face full of fear every time I close my eyes, part of me died that day I killed him.” Kevin wiped the last tear and stood up and put an arm on Sam’s shoulder and looked deep into Sam’s eyes, feeling a little uncomfortable Sam averted his gaze only to have his eyes land back on Kevin’s.
“Sam, remember these words well cause I know you’ll end up coming into numerous situations where the best option is for you to kill, fight the urge to Sam.” Sam listened to every word Kevin was saying, “Even in the darkest of suffering a man can sleep. But for the man that inflicts the suffering, his mind cannot rest.” The words moved Sam so much, he never before felt weak in the knees as someone spoke to him.
Sam hugged Kevin, ”Guess I should be going, I promise I’ll come visit you every now and then.” With that Sam walked out of his cell as he said his good byes to his former inmates. Once he walked to the gates of the prison walls Sam took a deep breath smelling the air resisting the urge to cry, he was one his way to the mansion, his home and his family.
