The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

Raina sat uncomfortably in the pre-op room looking at her clothes and belongings in the clear plastic bag. She’d been here nearly four hours at the center doing preliminary tests and prepping for the surgery. She hadn’t felt nervous until the moment the nurse left her alone in this sterile room.
Doctor Che had walked her through what the surgery would cover several times now to be sure she’d understood. First an incision would be made on both sides of her neck. It would follow the existing scar she already had left from the camps. Then they’d insert a temporary silicone barrier to keep her air ways open from the inside and keep air from leaking out when her throat shifted to gills. When this was secure they’d induce her mutation. The tail would be the hardest aspect to conquer and Dr. Che felt that removing her voice power would entail removing her voice completely while she was treated with radiation therapy- in other words that was something that would occur after she healed from this surgery.
Through testing Doctor Che had discovered that Raina had a swim bladder. She was likely born with it and due to the lack of medical facilities in the north it went undetected. He believed her mutation was linked to the swim bladder and that if it were removed or stabilized she could stop transforming. He couldn’t be sure if he had to remove it or stabilize it until he was in there. It was rather experimental- even for him so instead of going any further than that he wanted to stop there and see how she healed and how her powers were affected. This would be the start of many procedures for Raina but also the most invasive.
Looking around Raina wondered what it would be like to be unconscious. She’s never had a real surgery before and wondered if she’d dream or be aware of everything happening. Doctor Che said she’d have the choice to use conventional medicine to heal her or have a healing mutant provide its ability and she hadn’t made up her mind yet.
They’d be calling Iris now to let her know Raina was prepped and ready to go into surgery. Her hair was tied back and her piercings removed. She looked thin and weak under the hospital gown and it reminded her far too much of the camps. She’d put Naveed as her emergency contact as well- though he still didn’t know about the procedure… Raina wasn’t brave enough to tell him and it was her hope that he wouldn’t find out until everything was well and over with. If not, she’d leave it with Flloyd. After all, he owed her.
”Raina?” Came Doctor Che’s voice and a knock at the door. ”We’re ready for you now”
Raina took a deep breath and opened the door standing in front of Dr. Che. Shakily she took his arm as he led her down the long hallway to the operating room. Many smiling mutants and humans were seated in chairs along the way. They waved and smiled at her. These could very well be her last steps as a full mutant.

”Okay Raina, this is it. Take a deep breath and you will drift off. Count backwards from ten.” Instructed Dr. Che while Raina lied on the cold operating table. There was an IV in her hand that seemed to drip with the ticking of the clock and mask on her face to give her gas that would knock her out. She still felt shaky and she felt really cold which was unusual for her but she took deep breaths as the doctor directed her to.
”ten…. Nine… eight…” she thought in her head as things around her began to feel fuzzy. She could still see but the lights above her were bright and blinding. Busy hands pulled at the sheet around her and she felt the stab of a few more needles. ”Seven… six…. F-five…” She was really falling now and her body felt numb. Her eyelids felt heavy and her breathing even. “four… t-thirty…” her eyelids closed and Raina fell asleep.

“Scalpel”
She stood on the snow drift staring out into the wild storm. It was impossible to tell where the horizon was when all she could see was white and the splash of her own red hair. She wasn’t wearing anything at all but this didn’t seem to bother her. She felt natural and at home in the cold.
In the distance she heard the lonely howl of an Arctic wolf and a staff materialized in her hand. She started to trudge in the direction of the noise. She expected to sink in the cold snow but instead she walked upon it without leaving a footstep or trace that she’d been there. There was indeed a wolf ahead of her- he did not have the white coat she was sure she’d see but a radiant dark blue coat that seemed to carry the night stars in it’s fur.
“You made it” came the Wolfs gentle voice.
“Yes.” Raina found herself saying. “I didn’t think I would, or that I could get away but I am here.” She bowed low for the wolf.
“Give me the hose; this isn’t what I expected…”
”You may stand.” he said with a curt voice. ”you’re changing.” he observed.
Raina looked at her naked body to see it swirling with colours like ancient lineart. “Yes” she admitted.
”But you were chosen. You were gifted.” commented the Wolf walking around her and looking.
“Not gifted.” Said Raina. “different. Mutated. Changed.”
“no” barked the wolf. “You were chosen. By me. By your ancestors. You were given gifts to protect your people!” though he was loud the Wolf was patient and didn’t appear annoyed.
“My people cast me out.” Replied Raina with a dark tone. “They don’t want me to protect them. They cast out my brother too.”
“Your brother” Snarled the wolf. ”has evil in his heart. But you. You have purity. Purity to lead your people.”
“I don’t understand. Do you realize what this could mean?…”
“I don’t want to lead my people. “ cried Raina tumbling to the ground in on herself. “I want to be like the rest. I want to get away”
”To turn away such a gift…” said the Wolf with a sigh. “Is such a pity. You would be legendary. Your people would love you.
Raina shook her head. “No.” she said loudly and the wolf’s image began to waver. “I am no longer with the tribe. They are not my people. I will not fight for them. I will not be changed for them.” She pulled herself to stand and hit the ground with her staff.
The wolf looked at her with sadness in his eyes and suddenly she saw what he saw. “ Your people are not your tribe. Your people are your children. But it is done.” She saw the images of the children at the camps, on the street, in the mansion. Suddenly she understood.
“No…” the word escaped her lips but it was too late.
Raina felt an intense wave of pain wash over her body and somewhere in the background people were screaming. She felt wet and wasn’t sure why. But it was too much and the consciousness she had regained went as quickly as it came.

Meanwhile… “Scalpel” Said Doctor Che when he knew Raina to be completely unconscious. A woman doctor to his right passed the tool he requested and he began to make the incision along Raina’s throat. He was unsure if their tactic alone would be enough to keep he breathing once the gills came in place but for now an air tube snaked it’s way through her nose and down her throat.
It was strange- from this angle he could really see her ethnicity and despite being a woman of nearly 23 she seemed so child like lying on the table. “Hold the skin steady for me. This will be tricky. Get the silicone” .
Now Doctor Che really was all the bit the man he said and appeared to be. A credited doctor with majors in gene therapy and genetics he’d been specializing in mutants for about 15 years now- almost his entire career. He was every bit as talented and successful as he appeared as well but of course this all came at a price. But currently, Raina was his patient- a profitable one- and despite the severity of her surgery he was confident about the outcome. She’d already agreed to allow him to keep whatever materials he recovered from inside her –in this case he was most interested in the swim bladder- for future research.
Her throat was going well and the other doctors admired his handy work and he sealed it temporarily closed. “Get the water and be sure she’s strapped down tight. This is a violent transformation and unlike anything we’ve had before” he ordered shifting his glasses on his nose.
He had a team of doctors on the case today and each was responsible for something different. One was responsible for watching over her vitals, another was taping the session and making observations, one would monitor her throat for the entire surgery and a few others were giving him extra sets of hands. Currently the female doctor was aiding him again and brought the bowl of water over while the others strapped her down. He could tell by their faces that they couldn’t understand why someone so tiny would need so many straps but they would understand soon and be met with the same horror and intrigue that he had been that first time a few weeks ok. “ok. Stand back”
He took the water and sprinkled just a little around her legs. He could hear the rumbling instantly and her heart rate sky rocketed up. Her breathing seemed to remain the same and he watched her throat as it shifted- or rather tried to shift- to gills that were held shut by the makeshift silicone guard. He smiled proud of his work and turned his attention back to her legs. They squirmed as if worms were wriggling around underneath the surface and the skin shifted colours like an oil slick- looking bruised. He watched the expression of the others as little scales began to spider and dot their way around her hips and down to her knees and ankles. Her toes fanned and flattened in the strangest way becoming shiny and wet while her legs twisted and melted together to form one unit. The gaps raised in the room.
Finally it was done and he stared down at the magnificent mermaid. “It makes you wonder if the old sea tales were really true” he commented saying what they were all thinking. “Scalpel” he demanded again trying to judge where to make his next incision. He knew roughly where the swim bladder was thanks to the previous tests and thought that would be the best place to start. Honestly he couldn’t stop his mind from wondering what if any her reproductive organs had changed into, her digest system, her circulation… true he’d been dealing with mutants his whole career but none were quite as unique as Raina. They may have looked vastly different on the outside but on the inside most of them where very much the same.
As he made his incision and started to search it was as if Raina’s body was fighting back. Somewhere in her body something was secreting a lot of water and though she wasn’t losing any blood the water was pouring out of her.
“Give me the hose; this isn’t what I expected…” he hollered trying his best to drain it away and see what was going on. “keep checking those vitals, notify me of any change.” he fumbled around with those hose and was finally able to see the swim bladder. It wasn’t anything like he expected. No- not at all.
He stared as the others stared. It was obviously a vital organ as a major artery probably unique to her was connected to it. Everything else seemed to wind its way around it as well. The swim bladder itself looked like any other large organ you’d expect to see in a person except it seemed… crystallized ? Was that the right word to even describe its beauty? Clearly her powers originated from this organ and if he removed it she would be completely human again. It looked like a diamond inside of her and his mind was racing with the scientific -among other- possibilities.
“I don’t understand. Do you realize what this could mean?…” He said out loud without meaning to. “this could revolutionize everything we thought we knew about mutants… with this organ we could derive a way for regular people to breathe underwater. Think of the military possibilities! Think of the profits!”
Now it was true that Dr. Che was a man of science and a dependable mutant… but there was something darker beneath his success. For every 5 or 6 mutants he treated there was always the one- the sacrifice- that was ‘kept’ for scientific study. After all, how could someone become so successful in this type of work without a few ‘dissections’? And if he could make some money along the way… Dr. Che really did care about mutants becoming humans again but he also acknowledged that in order to further understanding there would need to be a few casualties.
His eyes were greedy and his hands were shaking. “for the greater good” he said to his staff who would not meet his eyes. “there are too many possibilities for us to pass up an opportunity like this. We’ll tell the others that there were unforeseeable complications. She was a type of mutant we weren’t expecting she…” he was searching for more reasons when the door to the operating room was kicked down and a gun was pointed in his face…
Flloyd had arrived at the center while Raina had just been admitted into surgery. He hadn't been alerted by anyone but he knew that today was the day and he wanted to be here for it. He wasn’t sure if Iris was here or not because he couldn’t quite recall meeting her but Raina had told him she’d be her person here.
He was in the waiting room and was being bombarded by everyone’s fears. It was rather unsettling at first but nothing too unexpected. People scared for their appointments, people worried about loved ones, people scared of mutants and people scared of doctors.
He even found Raina’s fear drifting through- also one he had expected- fear of the unknown. It was silenced and he knew she was undergoing her surgery and he knew it would take quite a while so he made himself comfortable with some magazines still keeping his mind alert.
It was when he saw the fears of Doctor Che and the doctors with him that Flloyd was on his feet throwing himself through the center toward the OR. A few nurses and staff tried to stop him along the way but he already had a good momentum going and there was no way they were catching up. He wasn’t sure where the OR was but the stronger the smell of those fears the closer he knew he was.
Raina didn’t know that Flloyd occasionally carried weapons. After a few run-ins with local poachers back home Flloyd had been black listed so he knew he had to protect himself. He promised himself he’d never purposely hurt someone unless it was self defense but that rule flew out the window when he kicked the door of the OR open and pointed the gun at Dr. Che’s head. “Stitch her back up you fu**er”

“…” Dr. Che turned to face his assailant- a man his own age with dark features and a gun pointed in his face. Maybe it was the gun or maybe the guy was a mutant but the room suddenly felt a whole lot darker. There was a collective gasp from the other professionals in the room as everything came to a halt except the steady beeping of Raina’s EKG.
Doctor Che’s hands where shaking now as the realization washed over him for what he was about to do. He gave his head a shake to clear it. “you’re being unreasonable” he growled. “…and besides I can’t just stitch her up right now and have everything be ok.”
He stared at the man with the gun and couldn’t believe he was doing so. “I’ve either got to remove the swim bladder or stabilize it. Otherwise she’ll stay a mutant”
“Why would you fu** with the man holding a gun to your face?” yelled Flloyd mentally trying to calm himself while he felt like throwing up looking at Raina’s contorted body strewn all over the table.
“Her home has an infirmary and people there capable of undoing the frakenstien-esq surgery you’ve tried to do. “ he pushed the gun to the good doctors temple. “You can call security if you like but I’ll have you dead before they get here. Stitch her back up.” He turned to the other doctors. “And you people get off your asses and do something to help. Keep her wet until he’s done. I want her file back too. And someone call her emergency contact Iris and get her here. Tell her to bring transportation. Now move it!” he ordered.
“And you do what I told you and stitch her back up.” He growled to doctor Che. He looked down at Raina and felt his face burn with anger.

“You don’t know what you’re dealing with. The complications. The problems. Not just anyone can put this girl back together” growled Doctor Che as he began to put Raina back in order and stitch her up. “I need to remove the silicone; we need to check her vitals…” he continued listing things that needed to be done when the man said about calling security.
“There’s no need to involve the authorities. ” he spat. “Raina gave her consent. She’ll never be human if I don’t go through with this”
He looked back to the man as he finished. “There. Stitched up. But she’ll need antibiotics and she needs to have the silicone removed. We have to keep her wet or she’ll transform back and the gills we’ll be stuck that way. She needs breathing apparatus… ”
“I’ll take my chances” growled Flloyd running to the sink and soaking as many towels and blankets as he could. He pushed the doctor out of the way and wrapped Raina in them wincing at the state of her body. The little man was right she’d need to be kept wet and probably still need that breathing thing and the IV. So he’d have to take her all like that!
He gave Dr. Che a shove and showed him the gun to remind him he wasn’t afraid of using it. Then he covered Raina up and started wheeling her out of the OR with the IV and breathing machine pulling behind. He kicked open the door not sure if Iris was here or not but figuring he’d have to try anyway…
“IRIS!” he bellowed. “IRIS I NEED YOUR HELP” he started screaming as much as he could setting the whole place in an uproar. Hopefully he’d find her.

Iris fidgeted in the waiting room. She couldn't seem to keep still, no matter what she tried. Reading didn't help, nor did writing. Even coffee couldn't calm her jitters, which said a lot for Iris, who's blood must have rivaled Kona Coffee in caffeine content by now. Thinking was definitely no good. What Raina's decision had been, and her reasons for it. The pre-tests of her powers. The many visits and consultations before the actual surgery. And now the actual date, and time was approaching.
Yeah. Dwelling on the event wasn't smart.
Instead she sat in a corner of the waiting room, away from everyone, and messed around with her stress-relief toy. The little item she'd won at the carnival, shaped like a Whack-a-mole whose eyes popped out when you squeezed, proved to be a rather effective distraction. Especially trying to figure out just how hard she could squeeze before it squeaked.
Surgery time came and went, and the hardcore waiting began. She had to keep telling herself that this was no simple, half an hour to an hour surgery. No, this was major surgery, likely several hours long, on par with a c-section.
Iris shuddered. Okay, time for a bathroom and mental break. And maybe another coffee break.....
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Fifteen minutes later, her feet led her back down the hall toward the waiting room, caffeine fix in hand, anxiously glancing at her watch. As she approached, it became obvious something had stirred up the other waiting roomies.
“IRIS!” Her heart stopped. “IRIS I NEED YOUR HELP!”
She didn't remember dropping the coffee, or feel the burn as it hit her leg before redecorating the floor. She didn't remember much of those few minutes actually. What she did remember was the look on the face of the man coming out of the medical ward doors. The man who was holding a transformed Raina in his arms. A very, very pale Raina....
She didn't think twice before activating her own mutation. Her hair and eyes hadn't finished changing to a dull purple before the nearest water fountain erupted. People nearby yelped and scattered away from the chilling rainfall, though some stopped to stare at the stream shooting toward the man holding the mermaid, drenching them both.
"Sorry!" Iris apologized half-heartedly as she raced to her friend's side. She simply knew that Raina had to be kept wet. "What happened??!" Even the gem-induced calm couldn't keep her rising fear at bay.
\Flloyd may have had a tough exterior but when he saw Iris relief washed over his face and tears filled his eyes. "You're Iris" he panted. "That doctor. I read his fears..." he shook his head. "I'm Flloyd," he explained quickly. "A friend of Rainas and I hear people's fears and that doctor was afraid he'd be caught." he looked angerly around at the people fleeing the building. "He doesn't even in his twisted head think he's doing something wrong! He really does want to help mutants but...." he looked down at Raina's pale little body wrapped in towels. "he's got one of those mentalities..." he tried to think of how to explain it. When he read a fear it was so clear to him yet so hard to describe with words. "You know, a one for all except less noble. He was going to kill her in the name of science once he figured out how she worked in the hopes of helping other mutants but also humanity by adapting her powers for the military or something. I couldn't get everything from his fear it's not like mind reading." he was frusturated and hoped he got the point across. "She's still transformed and she needs whatever he put in her neck taken out so when she tranforms back she can breathe. And I think we need a healer mutant. But I dont think we can go to a regular hospital. You guys have an infirmary at the mansion right? She told me she'd been there before. A doctor maybe? Even a healer can't fix her neck but maybe her other incisions. " He looked around frantically suddenly feeling very small.
"You're Iris."
"Last time I checked." Her tone denied the sarcasm in her statement.
"That doctor. I read his fears... I'm Flloyd, a friend of Raina's and I hear people's fears and that doctor was afraid he'd be caught."
"Caught? Caught what?" Many other questions whirled around in Iris's mind, but that one managed to make it past her lips.
"He doesn't even in his twisted head think he's doing something wrong! He really does want to help mutants but.... he's got one of those mentalities..."
Iris looked over Flloyd's shoulder; Doctor Che was nowhere to be seen. Her eyes narrowed slightly.
"You know, a one for all except less noble. He was going to kill her in the name of science once he figured out how she worked-"
"What??!"[/b] she exclaimed angrily, drowning out everything else he was saying.
"She's still transformed and she needs whatever he put in her neck taken out so when she transforms back she can breathe. And I think we need a healer mutant. But I dont think we can go to a regular hospital. You guys have an infirmary at the mansion right? She told me she'd been there before. A doctor maybe? Even a healer can't fix her neck but maybe her other incisions."
Iris had started moving before Flloyd finished speaking. She could freak out about all of this later. Right now, Raina needed her to stay levelheaded. Concentrating as hard as she could, she pulled the extra moisture away from the man's body, and let it splash over Raina. Then she pulled more from the fountain water to her, as much as she could handle, and soaked the towels as thoroughly as possible. When they began to drip, she gathered the droplets and returned them to the fabric. As the water evaporated, she could add more from the floating blob of liquid. But they still needed to act fast, before her supply, and her nerves, gave out.
"Do you have a car?" Tension turned her voice to a growl that she hoped he wouldn't take personally. "If not, we need one, like, yesterday. Preferably fast."
She looked around for Doctor Che. Surely this was just a misunderstanding. It had to be.
Flloyd watched momentarily forgetting the situation at hand when Iris used her powers. It was amazing- the water manipulation. Not unlike Raina's power though she could only seem to do it with ice. He shook his head to clear the noise. "I only have... my bike." he admitted. "I was hoping you'd have a car..." he could hear sirens in the background and wondered if someone tripped some sort of alarm or if Doctor Che was going crazy back there. "I've got one option...." he pulled out his cellphone and without explaining himself any furthur he dialed the number and waited.
"Yeah. Naveed. It's me. You need to come to the medical clinic on the corner of 53rd street- it's the one with the changing star as a logo. It's Raina. She's hurt. Bring a car- a big one-"
He slapped the phone shut. "He's going to fuc**** kill me." he admitted. Swearing reminded him he still had the gun and he slid it into his pocket before turning on the safety. "Don't usually carry one of these... I just had a weird feeling today." he watched the doors expenantly for the mountain man to come through.
ooc: Hey Iris, there's an NPC doctor at the infirmary right? Can anyone of us play him?
Naveed had arrived back in NYC only two days before the phone call from Flloyd. He'd been travelling to the Eastern shore and heading up to Canada through Maine when he decided to head back. He made the decision to follow Flloyd's lead and stay in NYC at least a little long while Raina adjusted to being a teacher. He knew she was hiding a few things- and that Flloyd was probably sugar coating some things as well- but he felt better about the progess his sister seemed to be making in getting over 'The Cop'.
He'd actually been musing about that exact thing when he parked his new rental van in the driveway of the house he'd just put the first months rent down for. Flloyd may have been an apartment man, and Raina may have liked living with other people- but Naveed loved big open spaces all for himself and that's exactly what this was. A big open house with nothing but a bed and some dishes so far.
He wasn't surprised when his caller ID showed Flloyd's name- his friend had mentioned needing to talk to him later today about something and maybe meeting for a few beers but he instantly became concerned when he heard the tone of Flloyd's voice.
Once he understood that what was happening was bad he floored the gas and zoomed out of the driveway nearly hitting the mailbox. He drove down the street like a maniac not really remembering Flloyd's directions and deciding to just floor it until he saw that weird star sign he vaguly remembered seeing before. It was a wonder he didn't get stopped by any cops- though he might drop Detective Kelley's name in on that one for a laugh.
He finally saw this center and his memory flashed back once he did see the star. He didn't bother parking but drove up on the sidewalk like the lunatic he was. People were pouring out of the building in a frenzy. He ran in with his plait flying in the dramtic wind and kicked the door open. He saw Flloyd instantly holding some giant package in his arm and a woman he recognized from the mansion - Iris wasn't it?
"So what's the big-" that's when his eyes fell on the 'package' and he realized it was Raina. "WHAT THE HELL WENT ON HERE." his eyes were ablaze and his mind was a fury over how many people he'd be ordering to kill themselves. "Flloyd, You- er Iris, van... NOW"
Flloyd gave Iris the look that meant they better listen to the crazed mind controller. "It's too much to explain right now we need to get her stabalized. All you need to know for now is that your sister could die if we don't get her back to the mansion."
He followed Naveed's lead and just about threw-up when he saw the van on the sidewalk. "Seriously?" he asked embaressed. "Oh man, I gotta leave my poor bike." he looked back at his bike apologetically. "Sorry man, girls before wheels." he loaded Raina into the back of the van and put a hand out for Iris.
"Iris- what's the quickest route back to the mansion, and can we call ahead or something to have someone meet us to help?"
