The computer kept telling Zeke that he needed to take a break, so he did. Putting down his weapons, Zeke exited the practice room and walked back to his computer, sweating as he went. Several weeks of solid practice had honed his skills, and he was feeling way more proficient than the week before. So far, so good.
There were rumors of camp breakout everywhere, even among the humans on the street. Zeke caught a word here and there without being too conspicuous, and the humans typically had a decent idea of what was going on.
Actually, unlike most mutants, Zeke wasn't very hostile against the humans. Although the Registration Act had done much to defeat mutant and human relations, Zeke remained convinced that it was vital for the two to coexist somehow. After all, if they didn't, one group would have to die, while the others ruled. Eventually, one or the other would win out, and the loser would be in bad shape. Ezekiel didn't exactly enjoy the idea of a 50/50 shot at survival.
And truth be told, the battle was close. With the Act, humans and mutants were decisively enemies in both of their minds, and enemies couldn't live together.
He walked to the nearby chair and slumped down in, breathing hard and trying to calm his heart. Firing a weapon or flinging a star wasn't exactly effortless these days. Zeke knew that the training would come in handy soon, especially if the rumors were true. Knowing that Evie was in the camps was the start, getting her out of there was the finish. His ultimate goal was her safety.
He started to click through some emails, all junk as far as he could tell. Then, a title caught his eye. The subject read, "The Truth about the Act", and seemed to be talking about the Registration. Zeke opened it and prayed a virus wouldn't worm in. Instead, he found an article claiming that although the camps were a crime against mutant-kind, the humans had a point of view on all this too.
Surprising himself, Zeke started to agree. He pulled up more and more websites, clicking until his mosue-finger hurt. Later into the night Zeke researched the Registration Act and the human reasoning behind it. It was vile, it was defensive, it was real, it was their only option. Zeke sat there and realized that the humans had introduced the act only to provide their own saftey.
For the first time, he was empathetic to their cause. The camps were extreme, yes. His girl was deep inside one after all, probably in pain right now. But still, the humans were simply scared, trying to save their race from extinction like the dinosaurs would have naturally done if they had had the chance.
Zeke's mindset started to change on the humans. He would absolutely go in after Evie and attack humans if he had to, to save her. But if at all possible, he would do his best to protect the humans just like the mutants.
Some would call it heresy, others would call it heroism. But little did Zeke know that his opening of that email would shape his career to come.
