The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

Lee hoped that the chaos in the city didn’t have anything to do with the Mystic. Train didn’t either because that meant that whatever Michael was trying to do hadn’t worked. She didn’t want it to not be the Mystic either.
Two huge problems going on at once would have probably been worse, but while they knew a bit about the Mystic, what they knew wasn't helpful in the current situation.
They stood there for a moment and Tarin could see Lee thinking until suddenly she spoke, and the tone of her voice and the change in her body language said every bit as much as the words coming out of her mouth.
Lee had her phone out and was dialing. How widespread was this? Tarin had no idea, but he knew what Lee was really asking. Was the same thing happening outside in the street happening at the Mansion? Was the same thing happening when Kevin was?
Answer your phone, answer your phone, answer your phone, Tarin said internally.
Meanwhile, Tarin realized he had something he could do to help and brought down his mental shield, allowing the spirits to come into the shop. And they did. And they were restless. Spirits that normally shuffled and stared were lurching and wailing, the ones who were restless by nature were flying all about.
Enough! Tarin said mentally, sending a firm mental command out into the general area and the spirits, at least the ones close enough, settled.
”I need to know how widespread this mess is.” he said, ”And fast.”

The phone was ringing. And ringing. With each and every time she heard her panic grew.
And while Kevin rarely actually talked on his phone, he also knew that if his mother was actually calling him rather than sending a text, it was important and better answer the phone.
As she listened to the rings, Lee could hear Tarin's voice. But she was too focused on the phone, to really hear what he was saying.
Voicemail.
Lee's heart felt like it was pounding in her throat as she waited for the beep. "Kevin, call me the moment you get this. It's important. Love you."
Hanging up, Lee looked over at Tarin. Sam and Shin had both said that when the mystics had attacked the mansion, all the students had been kept safe. But if this was happening all over the city, or if worse was happening somewhere, who was protecting the students?
Suddenly, the mansion felt like it was so far away.
Unless the mansion has been attacked first, Lee knew that the X-Men would have left, gone into the city to deal with whatever all this was.
"I need to get to Kevin," Lee said to Tarin before glancing between the panic door and the door to the alley. She didn't have a plan about how she would get there, and she didn't have a plan for what she would do when she did, but that didn't change anything. Lee needed to get to her son.

The spirits left and Lee was still on the phone. That definitely wasn’t a good sign. Kevin almost always had his phone on him. Taking that long to answer probably meant that he wasn’t going to answer.
More time passed, the seconds feeling longer and longer all the time and then Lee spoke, and for a moment Tarin was flooded with relief…until he heard what she was saying.
Lee was leaving a message.
She looked up at him and Tarin could see the panic on her face as she lowered the phone. The gears were turning in her head and Tarin knew the next words that were going to come out of Lee’s mouth before she even spoke.
”I need to get to Kevin.” she said, glancing between the two doors in the shop like she had to decide which one to take. She did, and he’d go with her.
”Yep.” Tarin said, ”You lead and I’ll follow, watching your back I’ve already got spirits figuring out how widespread everything is. When we get outside I’ll have more check and clear the way for us. You haven’t ever conveniently left any better shoes here have you?”

Tarin didn't argue with her. He didn't try to talk her out of it. Tarin simply agreed with Lee that she needed to get to Kevin. And that he would watch her back on the way.
Tarin had just admitted to Lee that he'd pretty much been terrified in the way to the shop, yet he was ready to head back out without hesitation so that Lee could get to Kevin.
Stepping toward Tarin, Lee wrapped her arms around Tarin in a hug. "Thank you," Lee said.
"And I can't think of any shoes that I've left here," Lee admitted as she stepped back from the hug. Then Lee glanced between the two doors again before walking toward the back door. At least leaving the panic door closed, the back of the shop would still be protected since there was a broken window.

Lee stepped forward to hug him and Tarin wrapped his arms around her tightly for a second, ”It’s Kevin…” he said, as if that explained everything because really, it did.
Tarin was worried too. If he was rational he knew that the explanation was simple. Kevin had drained his phone playing with his shield and it was charging somewhere. He was taking a shower and didn’t have it. He was hanging out with friends and didn’t want to be interrupted. Surely the kids at the Mansion knew what was going on though. Surely they knew that the people who cared about them were going to be trying to get ahold of them…
It was a moot point though. Lee stepped back and confirmed what he’d already known, that she didn’t have any shoes stowed at the shop and was already moving towards the back door of the shop.
Keeping his mental walls down, Tarin followed Lee out into the street as spirits started to return and report back what they’d found. ”Widespread chaos Lee. None of them know anything about the Mansion though. It’s worse down this way, but there’s looters all the way down at least 113th st and Columbia University.”
As they walked, Tarin changed his tactic and started linking up with as many spirits as he felt comfortable holding on to at a single time. Once he’d done that he gave them very simple instructions in groups of two or three. Find the clearest path. If there is no clear path, make one. Protect Lee.
Tarin knew he was building a lot of leeway in there and he sincerely hoped that anyone in their way was out looking for trouble, because even if they weren’t, they were going to find it today. ”Lead the way. There’s gonna be lots of spirits around, but they’re just clearing the way.” Using his powers like this, in the open, where anyone could see and tell exactly what he was capable of doing made Tarin a little sick to his stomach. He’d never done anything like this before with the exception of a mutant induced crazy few minutes in the park the previous May.
Lee needed to get to Kevin though, and Tarin realized that maybe did too. So he took a deep breath and pushed forward behind Lee, ”I’ll let you know if we need to turn.”

Making sure that the volume on her phone was at max, Lee put it back in her pocket. Tarin simply replied that it was Kevin as he gave her a hug back. That was enough of a reason for her, but the fact that Tarin said it, as though the fact that it was Kevin was enough reason for him as well…
Lee didn't have time to think about that, though, as she was out the back door and into the alley. She needed her mind on the task at hand, and she was already going to be distracted enough with her worry about Kevin.
As Lee made her way through the alley toward the street again, Tarin started speaking. Spirits were already coming back with reports that this was widespread. At least as far north as 113th street. Over 60 blocks. This was something huge, and that thought just made Lee more anxious to get to Kevin.
As before they had gotten to the shop, Lee's head was moving, trying to watch everywhere as she also focused on her siphoning. That was one nice thing, at least. Lee didn't have to spend time checking over her shoulder to make sure that Tarin was still with her. She could feel how far behind her he was and was grateful about this seeming change in her siphoning that somehow made Tarin's energy identifiable to her, even when others were around.
When Tarin spoke again, though, Lee did turn back to look at him. There were going to be 'lots of spirits'? It would make sense for Tarin to have the same spirits who had been sent out to see how bad everything was to try and find the best path for them, but to clear the path? But for that to happen, the spirits would have to…
Even though Tarin had given her the heads up, Lee was surprised when multiple spirits suddenly sprang into view. Glancing back quickly again, Lee saw that Tarin's eyes were white. He was actually using his powers, in public, to make it safer and faster to get to the mansion.
"That's probably a good idea," Lee told Tarin as she turned her eyes back to the front. "I don't think I have enough energy for if we have more than one come at us at once. Especially if they are mutants."

Lee was surprised and Tarin couldn’t blame her for her reaction a single bit. He was still an absolute nervous wreck as he walked behind her, but sometimes there were things that were more important than one’s personal comfort. This was one of those things.
If nothing else, Lee agreed that having the spirits there was a good thing. A not so good thing was that Lee didn’t think she had the energy to take on much of anything if they came acros trouble. Hopefully the spirits would be enough to help, but there were only so many that Tarin could control at a time, and if he went down…
The fact of the matter was that they had a long way to go. Even by cab, the trip from the apartment to the Mansion took more than a couple of minutes and they were even a bit further away than that. This was going to be a marathon.
”They’re looking for the fastest path, clearing the way if there isn’t one, and protecting us.” Tarin said as they walked, ”Anything else? Want me to let someone through if the opportunity arises? Have a spirit bring someone in?”
There were options here, the commands he gave to the spirits were malleable, all it took was a thought. ”We should be good about 50 ft in any direction.”

The spirits…seemed to be doing a decent job actually. While there weren't as many people on the street right now as there had been when they had arrived at the shop, no one living was actually making it to her and Tarin. But more than that, from what Lee could tell, the spirits weren't doing anything permanent to the people they were 'getting out of the way'. Knocking them out, incapacitating them, or dragging them down alleys or cross streets to get them out of their path, but Lee didn't see a single person so far who looked to have been killed or injured.
Tarin really did have solid control when he got spirits to do something. Not that Lee had doubted him at all, but this was impressive and they were actually making decent time down the street considering what was going on in the city.
Lee did not particularly like siphoning from people until they passed out, but it was easier on her conscience if she did it instead of physically hurting them (or worse) in a fight. "It would be smart if I had more energy," Lee told Tarin, still looking around as they went. The spirits were doing a good job, yes, but the motorcycle that had been thrown at them earlier was proof that the danger could come from further away, as well. "Just in case. Someone at least mostly conscious so I know when they pass out and don't have to worry about taking too much energy from them."

The spirits were doing their jobs, and they were doing them well. Everywhere Tarin and Lee went, the spirits swarmed ahead, to the side, or behind. If there were people there causing trouble, they were quickly incapacitated and either drug out of the way, or left to lay in the ground where they’d been dropped.
So far, so good. Tarin knew he was going to have a headache later, the barrage of images from all of the connections was intense. Somehow, though, it wasn’t as bad as when he’d tried to link up with that lobotomized spirit. That had been worse than the 10-15 spirits who were in and out of his range at the moment.
Lee commented that it probably wouldn’t be a bad idea for her to have more energy, and as they walked, Tarin nodded. ’No problem.” The further they walked, the more things continued to go well the less nervous he felt using his powers. The more comfortable, the more confident.
A quick mental command had a spirit shooting off into the street ahead. A few moments later it returned with a weakly struggling man dangling a couple of feet off of the ground, held up by his shirt. The man had bandoliers strapped across his chest and an empty holster strapped around his waist. Information flowed down the bond and Tarin huffed.
”He was looting with a bunch of others, fired a couple of warning shots at a shop owner a few blocks down. Shot someone who fought back in the leg. A nice long nap might really do him some good.” Tarin said, wishing they had time to get this guy to the authorities.

Lee mentioned that it would probably be a good idea that she have more energy, and Tarin said no problem. Almost instantly, Lee saw one of the spirits quickly shooting down the street ahead of them, only to return very quickly carrying a man. A man who was struggling against the grip that the spirit had on him, but not very effectively.
A man who looked like he was dressed more for some kind of war or military action than being on the streets of New York.
"Sure sounds like it might," Lee agreed as she stepped closer, reaching her hand out to clasp around the man's wrist and started quickly siphoning.
Even before Lee had touched the man, he was trying to fight her off without success. Lee had said that it would be good if she had more energy, just in case she actually had to do something. But that hadn't meant she didn't have any. Lee had still had more energy than she typically would have on a normal day. It just wasn't nearly enough to feel comfortable going into a fight.
It didn't take long for the man's already rather feeble attempts to get away from Lee and the spirit became less and less, and in just under a minute after Lee had first touched the man's wrist, he went completely limp as he dangled from the spirit's grip on his shirt. Much less time than it had taken when Lee had done this to Tarin in the back of the shop months earlier.
Lee continued siphoning for about another 10 seconds before letting go. "Well, hopefully his dreams over the next 12-15 hours teach him a lesson," Lee said as she stepped around the man and continued down the street.

Tarin watched as the spirit dangled the man, who continued to weakly protest and say all sorts of things that would have been inappropriate in polite company. Neither Tarin nor Lee cared though and Lee quickly had a hold of the man’s wrist and was doing her thing.
Tarin remembered, vaguely, what that was like. It was a blur, a couple of blurs, but Tarin still thought that this guy was getting off way easier than he deserved. It wasn’t like Lee was hurting the jerk. He’d just sleep for a while and be fine. At least for the next long bit of time, the guy wouldn’t be able to hurt anyone.
Lee said that hopefully the other man’s dreams would teach him a lesson and Tarin shook his head, ”Hopefully he wakes up naked in the gutter and can’t ever find that gun again.” he said as he also stepped around the man and continued to follow Lee down the street.
New York was never really quiet, but the sounds of chaos were still echoing up and down the streets as Tarin and Lee continued to make their way towards the mansion. It was going to take forever, and Tarin wished there was a faster or easier way.
Tarin was getting constant feedback from the spirits, where they were, what they were doing, and a few times over the next few minutes, he had to direct himself and Lee a block to the left or right before they could continue in the direction they wanted to go. ”I just don’t understand what the point of this would be…” Tarin said after the second time they’d had to turn because the clear sounds of battle and even a couple of booms that could have only been explosions had the spirits convinced that he and Lee needed to go another way.

Lee definitely had enough energy that she would be able to handle things with a human, or even multiple humans at once, without a worry. But the sprouts were still doing a damn good job keeping the path clear for her and Tarin.
A few times Tarin told her, seemingly out of the blue, to turn rather continue straight. Lee knew, however, that it would have been information from a spirit. But not one that was corporeal, who came to tell Tarin verbally.
Lee was very glad for these directions especially when she heard what she thought was an explosion in the direction of where they had been. But at the same time, Lee wondered just how many spirits Tarin had linked with. There were already a lot of them that Lee was able to see.
Lee glanced back at Tarin again. It was certainly a little shocking to see him walking down the street with his eyes completely white like they were. He so rarely used his powers in general that Lee wasn't used to seeing Tarin's eyes like this in general, never mind while walking down the street.
"You doing alright still?" Lee asked before she turned back forward. This was a lot more than Lee had ever seen Tarin do with his powers before. And for such a long time.
The part of her mind that wasn't panicking about Kevin was quite impressed.
"I don't know either," Lee admitted. "My guess would be distraction? If the summer proper isn't just chaos and bloodshed."

As they walked, Tarin noticed that Lee kept looking back at him and it took a while for him to figure out that this was probably a little bit weird for her. It was a little bit weird for him too. Outside of the shop he rarely ever used his powers and almost never to this degree. In fact, in the last week he’d used them more and more extensively than he probably had since he’d come through the rift.
Lee looked back again and Tarin smiled a little bit at her as she asked if he was doing alright.
Was he doing alright?
Tarin shrugged a bit as they walked, ”Mentally, It’s been a while since I did anything on this scale, but I’m okay.” He connected with spirits all day every day, just rarely more than one at a time. ”Just getting a lot of input from a lot of places.” If there was one thing that a lot of restless spirits loved, it was chaos and they were thriving and agreeable right now. That meant that Tarin didn’t have to work nearly as hard to get them to do what he wanted. Unfortunately, that didn’t stop the flow of information from being 2 way, and the constant barrage of information and images was a lot to parse.
”Physically? There’s a reason I work out beyond trying to impress you.” he said with a bit of a smirk, ”I’m hoping that the faster we can get through, the quicker we’ll get there.” he paused for a moment, thoughtful. ”I’m probably going to be pretty worn out by that point though.” he admitted. Eventually the walking and the work with his powers would take a toll.
Lee pointed out that the point of all of this was probably just chaos and Tarin had to nod. ”Chaos on this scale is usually a distraction though…” he left the rest unspoken, but he had to wonder, a distraction from what?

Tarin gave her a bit of a smile, and Lee gave him a small one back. It had been a while since he'd done anything like this? With what Lee knew about Tarin and his past, which was a lot more than most people would have known a person after 4 months, the only situation Lee could think of where Tarin would have done anything even remotely similar to this would have been on Hart Island.
When Tarin mentioned his working out to impress her, Lee shot a grin back at him. Lee definitely appreciated Tarin working out, and the results that produced. "And here I thought you did it all for me," Lee teased. She knew that her interest in and appreciation of his physique was only a very happy side effect of his workout routine.
Though it did make sense that Tarin would be worn out by the time they made it to the mansion. It really was a long way. Virtually everyone would be worn out at the end of the trek they were currently making. Lee was the exception in that she could do this for literal days as long as she had sufficient energy. And as long as this chaos was continuing, she would be able to get that energy from people.
"Well, if you need to pull back on how many or need a break, let me know." Would Lee be happy about having to stop and wait? No, she wanted to get to Kevin and make sure that he was alright now. But thanks to the spirits clearing a path, they were making much faster progress than if they had to depend on completely avoiding trouble or Lee clearing a path, which made the idea a little more tolerable. And despite all of her worries, Lee didn't want Tarin to push himself too far.
Slowly, Lee realized that she was hearing a familiar sound through the general din of the streets. When she realized what she was hearing, Lee stopped dead, her hand shooting into her pocket to pull out her phone.
"Oh thank god," Lee breathed as she swiped to accept the call. "Kevin? Are you alright?"

”That would be worth it all on its own, but no.” Tarin said winningly. This sort of banter was not moving them more quickly towards the Mansion, but it wasn’t slowing them down either and the fact that Lee seemed to be relatively calm and not panicking at the moment made it worth it. Once they found out that Kevin was safe, because of course he was safe, Tarin told himself, they could revisit this line of thinking.
Lee said that he could pull back on the number of spirits or rest if he needed and that he should just let her know and Tarin nodded. ”I won’t push too far…” he said a bit more softly, but loud enough Lee could hear. Not only would it be detrimental to getting to the Mansion if he was too exhausted to continue, letting himself get to that point was a sure fire way to invite a more insidious action from a spirit. That was the last thing anyone needed.
Suddenly though, Lee stopped and pulled out her phone. Did that mean?
Lee’s breathed little statement of thanks immediately sent a similar pulse of relief through Tarin as she answered the phone.
——
”Uh..hi Mum.” Kevin said, ”Don’t be mad. We were watching a movie because we can’t go outside and I had my phone on silent on the table. I didn’t see that you called until now.”
