The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

It was a good thing he could clean up, was it? Tarin thought with a chuckle and a shake of his head as they made their way outside, gratified that Lee had liked the shirt. Though, he thought with no small amount of satisfaction, she’d seemed to like him just fine without any shirt at all the other night. It would have been ungracious to bring that up though, so he didn’t.
”A cab it is, then.” Tarin said when Lee agreed that a cab might be best and immediately stepped out to the curb to flag one down. It didn’t take long at all, and soon enough they were climbing in the back and giving the driver the address of the bar.
”I have to admit that I’m kind of excited to see this place.” Tarin said, watching the shops and apartment buildings move by as the cab made its way through traffic. ”I’m also admittedly curious about this Matt guy.” The brave, or incredibly foolish man who was dating Lee’s sister, ran the bar where Lee worked, and wasn’t very good at remembering why he had set up meetings.
The cab ride wasn’t long at all though, especially considering traffic this time of night and soon enough they were climbing out as Tarin took care of the fare. It was the least he could do after allowing Rachel to talk him into this whole thing.

It didn’t take long for Tarin to grab a cab for them. Well, even if it was a Sunday night, this was still Manhattan. After they climbed in, Lee gave the driver the address for the bar and off they went.
Lee knew that it wouldn’t take too long to get there, but during the trip Tarin commented about being interested to see the bar. And to meet Matt. “Matt has done a pretty good job with the place over the years,” Lee said. “It definitely looks nicer than when I first saw the place, but he’s still somehow managed to keep more or less of the same vibe: a small, friendly rock bar. And honestly, even though he’s dressed the place up, and a lot of the, especially younger, customers are dressing fancier than they used to, there are still some regulars that show up at times in just t-shirts.”
About that time, they had stopped in front of the bar, and as Tarin paid, Lee got out pulling her guitar case behind her. Once Tarin had joined her on the sidewalk, Lee led the way to the door. And the 6’4” tall bouncer standing there.
“Hi Tony, how’s it looking tonight?” Lee said as they came up to the man.
“Hey Lee. It’s a decent crowd for a Sunday,” Tony said as he pulled the door open. “And no trouble that I’ve heard about yet.”
“Great. Thanks Tony,” she said as she walked through the door and into the bar.

Lee spoke about the bar with no small amount of pride and it quickly became even more obvious that this place meant a lot to her. It piqued his curiosity even more, and as they approached the door he marvelled at the ease with which Lee conversed with the absolute giant of a man at the front door before heading inside.
For a split second as Tarin followed behind, he wondered if Tony was going to stop him from entering the establishment with Lee but he didn’t and then they were inside.
The place was…exactly how Lee had described it. A cute, homey Little Rock bar that toed the line admirably between comfortable and edgy. Tarin liked it immediately and followed Lee wherever it was she wanted to go. Tony had been right, the place was honestly pretty busy for a bar on a Sunday night, but New Yorkers had schedules as diverse as the population and it was always somebody’s Friday night.
”That incredibly large man seemed nice.” Tarin commented as he caught up with her, ”I think I like this place already.”

Making sure that Tarin was inside and following her, Lee made her way through the crowd toward the bar. But she had to keep glancing behind her to make sure he was still following; her siphoning would now be of absolutely no use for knowing if he was following without looking.
Suddenly, Lee felt a surge of energy beside her, and she glanced over to see that it was just Tarin who had finally caught up with her. And she laughed when she heard his comment about Tony. “He’s a teddy bear, to be honest. But he’s a damn good bouncer when there’s trouble.”
Lee then smiled when he said that he already liked this place. “Good,” she said. “There’s just something about this place. I’ve been in a lot of bars over the years, and I’ve never found another place even close to this.”
By this point, they had come up to the bar. Setting the guitar down on its end, Lee leaned it against the bar as she looked around. She didn’t see Matt at the moment, though she knew he would be around somewhere. He always was. But it didn’t really take long for a bartender to come over. “Can we get two beers?”

Tony, as it turned out, was a teddy bear. Tarin couldn’t help but laugh when Lee said it because he was sure he was a teddy bear to her. It was hard to imagine anyone not being a teddy bear to Lee, up to and including a real grizzly bear. If they were anything else she’d have kicked their ass, put them in their place, and they’d have learned their lesson for the next time.
”I’ll keep that in mind.” he said.
Lee seemed pleased with Tarin’s approval of the bar and he took a closer look around. It was another piece of Lee’s story, and he found himself wanting to know more and more about what made her tick. About why she was so simultaneously bold and hesitant, why she seemed so afraid to reach out when she needed something, but always willing to help when it was someone else.
Deep thoughts for a bar.
They made it to a place Lee found favorable and she sat down her guitar, looking around for who had to be the famous Matt. It didn’t seem like Lee found him though and she took the liberty of ordering a beer for each of them.
When the bartender returned, Tarin took a sip of his, planning to nurse it for a while. He wasn’t a big drinker in the first place, and if Lee wasn’t planning on staying out late it wouldn’t be smart to go too hard too fast.
”I don’t know what time they signed you up.” he said, then nodded to the guitar, moving just a little bit closer and leaning down so Lee could hear better, of course, ”I’ve never thought to ask you what you sing.”

Once ordered, service was fast, and they quickly had beers in hand. Taking a sip, Lee turned to look at Tarin as he started speaking. “I’m sure I’ll be told before too long,” Lee assured Tarin. “Though I’m not sure what I’ll sing yet. I’ve got a couple of ideas. But I wouldn’t have put it past Rachel to have picked something out and had Matt write that down, too. Not that I’d follow that if she has.”
Shaking her head, Lee took another sip of beer. She had to admit, though she never would to Rachel, this was nice.
Then she heard a voice behind her.
“It’s about time you’re back, Lee! The bar has been languishing without your beauty to drive all the men crazy.”

Good lord, did Rachel need to learn some boundaries where her sister was concerned. While he was happy to be here, and admittedly excited to see what Lee was going to sing, Tarin knew that he wasn’t going to let Lee’s sister bully him into doing something like this again. If Rachel was stubborn, he knew what he was up against now and would be prepared the next time they had to do battle.
A voice rang out behind them, loud and animated enough that Tarin had no trouble hearing him over the din of the crowd.
Soooo. This was Matt.
He was an unadulterated flirt, and Tarin couldn’t help but chuckle. It would take a large personality to put up with someone like Rachel, and despite the fact that it had only been a moment, Tarin could tell Matt had that in spades.
”I’m guessing that’s Matt?” Tarin said, taking another drink of his beer.

Lee chucked slightly as she heard Matt’s voice behind her. “Yes, that would be Matt,” Lee confirmed before turning to face her old friend. “Well, I had to do something. The women around here were starting to get mad. Plus, we couldn’t have you flirting with me all night once you started dating Rachel, could we?” Lee raised a knowing eyebrow at Matt as she took a sip of her beer.
“Ah, but we make more money from the men pining over you,” Matt countered. “Though, your sister can be scary when she doesn’t get her way.”
Lee laughed. Rachel could be bitchy when she didn’t get her way, but Lee wouldn’t call it scary. “Well, speaking of that, what time am I supposed to be going on stage tonight?”
Matt pulled out his phone and checked the time. “Looks like you’ve still got about 40 minutes,” he said as he put his phone back in his pocket. “She said she was expecting a fight to get you here, so had me put you on the list a little later. But she said that Tarin…the other…you know what I mean,” Matt stammered as he glanced around. “That he was supposed to be here with you. Where is he?”
“Matt,” Lee said slowly before lifting the hand not holding her beer and resting it on Tarin’s arm. “This is Tarin Brooks. And Tarin, this is Matt Devries, probably the person I’ve known longest in this city at this point.”

Oh, Matt liked to lay it on thick. Lee took it in stride though and Tarin simply watched her as she responded. The last couple of days, Tarin had seen flashes of this Lee, with her easy smile and laugh. A stark contrast from how serious she’d needed to be previously when they’d interacted. As he watched and smiled slightly, Tarin wondered what was more her natural state of being. Was this more of a persona that Lee put on when she was in the bar, or was this how she really was when she wasn’t dealing with a whole lot of crazy.
Again. Very deep thoughts for a bar.
Matt pointed out that he knew Rachel could be scary when she didn’t get her way though, and Tarin instantly empathized. He’d only had to deal with Rachel with her mind set on something once and he didn’t want to ever do it again. Imagining dealing with it all the time, he almost shuddered.
It sounded like Lee had 40 minutes before she even went on stage, so it seemed like they would be staying for a little while at least. Rachel had been sure that Lee would put up more of a fight before leaving and Tarin was once again glad that he’d come clean…as awkward as it had initially been.
Then Matt did the thing.
Tarin was absolutely going to have to ask to see a picture of the other Tarin because even standing next to Lee and speaking to her. Even with the expectation that Lee was going to be at the bar with him tonight, Matt had absolutely no idea who Tarin was.
Lee placed a hand on his arm and Tarin shot a quick grin in her direction before offering Matt his other hand to shake, ”Nice to put a face to the name. I’m…well, I guess you already know who I am, but I’m “the other” Tarin.” he said with an affable smile, ”You’ll be gratified to know that Lee talks about you all the time.”
Well, strictly speaking it was true. Matt was probably the person Lee talked about most outside of her siblings. Now, would he get the hat trick on people who were close to Lee being utterly shocked that he was…well…himself?

Matt clasped Tarin's hand and returned the handshake. Then turned a knowing grin on Lee when Tarin mentioned her talking about him. “Is that so?” he asked as he pulled his hand back, the handshake finished.
Lee rolled her eyes and shook her head. 'Well, someone's gotta keep this bar running, don't they?” Lee quipped back.
“That's why I hire people, Lee.” Matt replied. “Leaves me free to chat with any beautiful women who may come in.
“Though Lee hasn't really talked about you. Not in years.” Matt continued, turning back to Tarin. “And Rachel didn't really say a whole lot, to be honest, which is the really surprising part. So how did all this,” Matt waved his hand slightly between them. “Suddenly happen?”
Lee’s head tilted slightly as she looked at Matt. Had Rachel really not told him much of anything that had happened in the last week? Lee felt that was strange; Matt had learned more about her being a mutant in the time he’d been dating Rachel than in the whole rest of their friendship. Not that she’d hidden it, she just…didn’t really share the knowledge at the bar.
“We…kind of ran into each other last weekend,” Lee replied, trying to figure out a way to phrase the situation without telling the dirty, truthful details. “And got to talking enough that your girlfriend plotted to have me dragged here tonight”

Something in Matt’s over-the-top and charisma-oozing manner simply had put people at ease and made it obvious why he was so comfortable in his job. Tarin didn’t know much about tending bar, but in movies, TV, and even advertisements they were always the ‘face’ of the establishment and their demeanor and personality set the tone for the space. It made a little more sense that Lee was willing to put up with the shortcomings she’d mentioned to have him working on the front end.
Matt mentioned that it had been years since Lee had talked about Tarin and he frowned slightly in confusion wondering when Lee had ever talked about him before. Maybe it had been that single day when the rift had just closed and Tarin had been wandering past the shop, trying to figure out exactly what happened next. Otherwise, he hadn’t seen Lee until the previous Friday night.
It was odd that Rachel hadn’t said much though. It made Tarin wonder if he wasn’t giving Lee’s sister enough credit because obviously she did have at least a shred of discretion where her sister was concerned…just not with Lee herself.
There wasn’t much for Tarin to say as Lee explained how this had suddenly happened and it struck Tarin that a lot had happened in a week. In fact, a week ago today, they’d stood at the top of the Empire State Building and Tarin had decided that maybe he did deserve a second chance.
Lee pointed out that it was Matt’s girlfriend who had orchestrated the whole thing and Tarin shrugged helplessly, ”She ambushed me at my place of business. I didn’t stand a chance.”

Matt chuckled hearing Tarin’s comment. “Few do, I’ve noticed,” he replied. “I only lasted as long as I did as a bachelor because I kept holding out for you, Lee,” he continued with a wink.
“Yeah, but I think Rachel’s a much better match for you,” Lee replied. “Plus, we only ever see each other at work. Not the best way to start a relationship.
“Speaking of work, you should be getting back to running my bar, Matt,” Lee said, a slight teasing tone in her voice. She knew full well that he owned the place, even if she had helped with that. “But no updates for Rachel through the night. You can let her know I actually showed up, and when I get on stage if you must, but that’s it. If you think Rachel can be scary, that’s nothing.”
Matt just chuckled again, thinking Lee was joking. “Yeah, yeah, Lee. I wasn’t going to send her any to start with.”

There it was again, that easy teasing and banter. It was almost, but not quite flirting, but the dynamic between Lee and Matt absolutely blurred the lines a little bit. Noting he didn’t particularly like the way Matt continued to…do whatever it was Matt was doing…Tarin realized he was a little jealous and squashed the offending little emotion immediately. That wouldn’t do.
Lee sent Matt off to work again with a threat that Tarin did not think the other man was taking half seriously enough. He’d clearly never seen Lee in all of her furious glory. Tarin had, interestingly enough, and knew she was a force to be reckoned with…or not reckoned…with as it was.
For some reason it made him smile.
Matt made his way off to do whatever else it was that Matt did and Tarin found himself leaning against the bar and looking at Lee again. He seemed to be doing that a lot tonight, but her entire presence was so different that it was hard not to look. He also liked her hair like that.
”Well, that seemed to settle that.” he said, taking another drink, ”Think he’ll actually keep to himself, or do you think she’ll break him down?”

Lee raised her eyebrows. Clearly Matt didn’t know her as well as he thought he did if he didn’t realize that she could be scarier than her younger sister. Then again, Matt didn’t know half of what she’d done, and it wasn’t like there were many instances in the bar where that kind of situation occurred for Lee.
“You better not,” she said as Matt walked away. Then she turned back to look at Tarin as she took a sip of her beer.
“Oh, he won’t send her anything tonight,” Lee confirmed what Matt had said. She knew him that well. But she also knew her sister. “But I also wouldn’t be surprised if she’d found everything she wants to know out by noon tomorrow. Not that there’ll be much to tell. We’re going to what, have a few beers, I’ll sing a song, we go home, right?”

That made total sense. Tarin decided. He did not envy Matt his position between the wills of the Smith sisters. In the same spot, Tarin probably would have done the same thing. It was undoubtedly the easiest way to stay in one piece around them.
As for the rest, Lee had a point and Tarin had to laugh a little bit, ”Good point.” he said, ”Though, you didn’t ever tell me what happened here, that was so shocking and irresponsible. Maybe that’s why Rachel wants updates?”
Tarin sat the beer down on the bar and turned so he was facing Lee a little more fully, ”Anything in particular I need to watch out for?”
