Mini Power Growths—A New way to git gud

Howdy MRO, we have some fun news!

We know that waiting 300 posts for any kind of character growth is a long time, especially as we are in a season of lower activity. We also know that if you hit a power growth and only use it to amp up the numbers on your current power that feels kind of lame. So we have come up with something to make it feel like your character is progressing a little faster while also saving those power growths for shiny new powers or abilities.

Introducing the Mini Power Growth!

Nestled halfway between regular power growths a Mini Power Growth or MPG is a way to give a boost to one of your character’s existing powers. For mutants it is just one power, and just one aspect of it. The boost can be up to one-third (rounded up) of an increase to any part of the power keeping the same unit. So days stay days, hours stay hours etc. For mystics it is easier. One spell of any school.

All Mini Power Growths require moderation, just as standard Power Growths do.

For Mutants:

You gain the ability to increase an attribute of a currently existing power up to an extra third. Examples:
--Your range increases by a third
--You can control a third more targets
--You can move a third more mass
--You can do a third more damage
--Your power lasts a third longer

Or you may reduce the severity of a weakness by up to a third. If your power doesn’t have facets that can easily be increased, or when doing so would cross a threshold into being extremely unbalanced, a moderator will help you find a way to level up without throwing things out of whack.

For Mystics:

You gain the ability to learn a single spell of any level from any school of magic. This even includes top tier spells from schools your character does not have access to. This allows you more flexibility in shaping your character without having to devote up to three normal Power Growths in a school when you only need a single ability from it.

When you submit your Mini Power Growth, use the standard spell template and write up your chosen spell.



Here’s are some examples:

Rhia- Rhia can swap two other people. She could use her MPG to allow her to swap another group of two! She could also choose to instead lengthen the duration of the swap by another day, going from 2 days to 3.

Ranger- Has a lot of powers so here’s a short list of possible options
-Lifting 65,000 becomes 86,450 lbs
-5 uses of the defensive aspect of their power becomes 6
-Time limit on proactive instincts increase from 2 hours to 3 hours

Null- Null currently has access to the Somation and Metation schools of magic, but he might go for an Evocation spell so he can shoot bullets that explode on contact.

The MPGs come 150 posts after the previous PG. If you want to use it right away, cool! You can also wait and use it when you get your next PG. If you don’t use it when you apply for the PG you lose it. We’ll try to remind you if we know you haven’t used it. You can apply for an MPG at the same time you apply for a PG, although the MPG cannot be used on any new ability introduced by the PG.

Here’s a little chart showing the earliest you could get MPGs and PGs:
0 posts - New character! Creating the power.
150 posts - MPG
300 posts - PG
450 posts - MPG
600 posts - PG
And so on.

As part of this rollout, any character that has already achieved at least one PG can immediately redeem a free, retconned MPG for their first 150 posts. This way long-time characters don’t have to miss out completely on this new system. If you’ve already posted at least 150 times after the last PG, or have posted 150 times since your character was created, you can apply for that MPG immediately as well.

To make things easier, we are also making a change. Instead of having to email the modmail for a power growth or mini power growth, feel free to drop the application for it in the character application board. You may still send an email to the modmail if you are more comfortable with that.

And one more thing! You will notice there was no mention of a time requirement on that chart. That was not an oversight. If you can achieve 300 posts in less than a year you can apply for the PG immediately. No need to wait for the calendar to hit a specific date. We have removed the wait period for getting Power Growths! You no longer have to wait a year in between character creation and your first PG, or in between PGs.
