Maintaining a high level of fitness is important for his work as an officer and as someone who wants to rid the world of mutations.
Fighting Style: A mixture of police combatives and muy thai with an emphasis of subduing his opponents. Against a mutant he will attempt to negate or reduce their mutation with his magic.
Fighting Style Pros/Cons:While he is capable of causing severe damage to another by shooting or laying hands on another, he normally holds back to avoid causing severe injury to another. Use of deadly force or enough to permanently harm another is an extreme he will often hold back from using until it is long past where he should have and has been hurt himself.
History Of Your CharacterBorn to a family in the oil business in West Texas, Sam didn’t have to fight for much growing up. He had the standard fair for the child of a more affluent family growing up; piano lessons, tutors, and an enrollment in various martial arts programs.
He proved to be popular enough at school. He was generally taller and had nicer clothes than most of the other kids. This was until as he grew he began to be bullied. In middle and high school a group of kids from the poorer side of the tracks decided they needed to bring him down a peg or twelve and aimed to make his life hell wherever they could. The group all being mutants made this exceedingly easy. Strength, spikes, and some kind of weird making walkways slither like you were walking along a snake in motion were his torments.
Through it all he couldn’t bring himself to hate his tormentors, they had cause for the anger, however misplaced. While it wasn’t Sam’s fault that the kids had terrible lives that drove them to torment others and the kids were in their situations, initially, through no fault of their own. It was their powers. Their mutations were what Sam knew had corrupted them from the inside. Their mutations led them to feeling like they could and should someone to hurt to feel better.
Sam never forgot his tormentors, even as he went through college at NYU for a philosophy degree. He never forgot it when he signed up for the NYPD. His beliefs even seemed to aid him in his life as an officer. He viewed perpetrators as worthy of respect, victims of their situations.
It was when he came across the Welldrinker Cult that he finally found a way to help those cursed by their mutations. Unable to handle the power, they lash out against others.
Sam found he could mitigate mutations.
By engraving sigils onto objects, he could stab a mutant and their mutation would be reduced. Even greater, were it to be a knife or bullet theri would be no damage as the spell took effect. This was how he could save people. With his magic, perhaps one day he could remove mutations and set the chaos right.
This newfound power was a key point in changing his career trajectory. Suddenly his record had him more capable of apprehending mutants and a transfer to MRC was almost immediately granted.

Rhiannon Curtis Sample RP:Sam sat in his undercover car watching the front of a Best Buy. He had been sitting their for over an hour, waiting for one Colten Waller to leave. Sam was there to apprehend Colten but he wanted to do it without endangering random passersby.
Colten was a mutant. One who seemed to think this gave him the right to trample over the citizens of New York. Typical. He had done well, covering his tracks and keeping NYPD off his trail for years. Were it not for a slipup a few months back, MRC wouldn’t have officers waiting at his home, his place of employment, and right outside the store he was presently patronizing.
Not a violent offender, Colten’s mutation allowed him to feel encrypted data from objects he was near and could see. For years he had been going to different stores and finding reasons to stay near registers. As consumers paid with credit cards he became aware of the data from the chip. He could then go home and use this card information to purchase items online and ship them to dead drop homes.
It went well for him. Until it didn’t.
Colten walked out of the best buy, a broad grin on his face as he slid on a paid of Ray Ban sunglasses. Sam smiled to himself as he said over the radio,
”Suspect has left. Beginning pursuit.” Stepping out of his blue Ford Taurus, Sam took a breath before he set after Colton. He moved quickly, but not so quickly as to arouse suspicion. He needed to close the distance but not spook Colten. It took him a half block before he was walking a few paces behind Colten.
When an alley presented itself, Sam shoved Colten into it. The man stumbled and as he wheeled around to shout at the man who had just forced him into an alley he saw Sam standing at the mouth of the alley with his badge on display, hanging from around his neck.
”Colten Waller, I’m Detective Samuel Travis with NYPD’s Mutant Related Crimes. You’re under arrest.” Sam said as he reached with his strong hand behind his back and under his jacket.
“No way, man!”[/color] Colten said as he reached into the back of his pants for a concealed firearm.
Sam passed his handcuffs and drew out a four inch fixed blade knife. It had sigils and runes engraved all along the blade. Sam had anticipated that Colton wouldn’t surrender without some level of fight. Colton’s mutation was too lucrative to have it locked behind bars.
Before Colton could have the gun drawn and brought to bear, Sam was upon him the knife slashing across the man’s hoodie.
In a flash of dim light from the blade, the spell took hold. The knife failed to cut through any fabric, it passed through like it was made of nothing. The hoodie, however, immediately flailed. Colton’s arms shot out to the sides and shook violently. The pistol was forcibly ejected from his hands before his arms were then drawn back behind him. They wrenched painfully behind Colton and he dropped to his knees.
Sam returned the knife to its sheath and drew his handcuffs. Colton’s arms were perfectly positioned for him to make the arrest.
”A shame you didn’t have a power to fight with. I wanted to test my latest attempt at mutation nullification. No matter… I hope you like prison.” Sam said quietly as Colton cried out in surprise, anger, and pain.
”You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can be used against you in court. You have the right to talk to a lawyer for advice before we ask you any questions…” Sam spoke the Miranda warning loudly to Colton as other officers arrived to lend a hand. Sam wasn’t about to question Colton so the Miranda warning was not necessary, but there was no harm in doing it immediately. In case their was a failure to Mirandize later, they knew he had been given one.
