Character

Ashamed of his mutation, hates being a freak.
He knows who his friends are and looks out for them, but doesn't owe anything to anyone else. -- and as far as he's concerned, he left all his friends back in Phoenix.

Morality
Neutral: Mason has lived a privileged and unexamined life. Right and wrong are determined by what he is or isn't allowed to do by the adults in his life. He has respect for authority only when the authority is exercised.
Mutations
Mutation description:
Directed portal creation.
Mason can create spatial anomalies with each hand. The portals can be placed at range. Each anomaly is linked to the other and consists of a circular portal linked to the other. When created, the portals are 'locked in place' and can't be changed except to be closed.
Strengths: The power is very reliable, particularly at short range. Perfect for controlling the environment around physical fighters.
Weaknesses and Limitations:
Distance: No limit has been determined but a) there is one, evidenced by the fact that he can't open a portal into space by aiming at the sky, and b) aiming the placement of a portal is much harder as the distance grows.
Limit: Only two portals can be open at a time. There must be two portals active to keep the other stable. If one portal is open for too long (~5 seconds) without another to stabilise it, the portal closes.
Maintained effect: Each portal is active only so long as Mason is focussed on it. If Mason is incapacitated or his attention is significantly disrupted, the portals destabilise and close.
Physical Abilities
General Physical Capabilities: Well-built for a normal standard of 15yos. Fitness is largely related to sports ability. Running, throwing, tackling.
Fighting Style: A scattering of fist-fights before mutation emerged. Can throw a punch but no formal training. Is used to being the bigger guy and punching down.
Fighting Style Pros/Cons:
History Of Your Character
Tricia and Thom Cornwall didn't have much. Everything they did have, they purposed toward giving Mason all the advantages a child could hope for. The Cornwalls loved their son every day and expressed it easily. In return, Mason Cornwall grew into exactly the boy they had hoped for.
There were some hiccups. Small ones. Barely worth mentioning.
Freddie Turner had been giving Mason some grief for a while before they finally came to blows. Mason said as much. The teachers could attest that there had been mounting conflict, and had ultimately understood that Mason was very sorry for the damage he had done to the Turner boy. Boys will be boys, after all.
The Cornwalls couldn't have been more proud of their son. He was on track to be the first Cornwall to go to a university, he was happy, talented, and considerate of those around him.
****
Mason kept the dirty secret hidden.
Had to.
Freak.
God, what if his friends found out? Or his coaches? What if his parents knew?
The memory of the morning never failed to summon the pit in his stomach. Confusion. Elation. Realisation. Revulsion. Determination. Noone could ever find out.
But of course they found out. He wasn't built for keeping secrets. Didn't work that way. Mum might have known already. He suspected but couldn't ask. Obviously.
Freddie found out. Presumably Freddie would be taking his place on the team now.
Mason resisted the urge to cry into his hands when they told him he was being sent away. He'd tried -- and failed -- to be a good son.

This was it. Oak and mahogany. Smiling faces all pretending things were fine and the world hadn't gone to hell. Some of these people (a generous assessment, knowing what these things really were) had horns. No clearer indication of their deep wrongness could possibly exist.
He'd seen them on the news. Seen the things they could do. Maybe an influencer would come out and tell him that he was a prank victim.
Alas, no influencer came.
Mum and Dad had said their goodbyes at the airport. He'd insisted. Didn't want them to see the sorts of people (there was that word again) that he'd been condemned to spent the rest of his life around. He didn't want to - and thus didn't - listen to their voices. If he kept at it, surely they'd take the hint eventually.
"Let me go, mutie," Mason tore his arm from the gentle hand that offered to guide him to the place where he'd sleep, "I'll carry my own bags.
