Character
Personality: A firm believer in celestial astrology, Nyra is has a deeply Piscean personality. She is highly intuitive, deeply introverted, and prone to loneliness and at times even jealousy of others’ seeming ease in social situations. She needs her alone time, and finds her social battery drained after a few hours, sometimes even less depending on the situation. Nyra is profoundly compassionate and loving toward others, particularly animals. She struggles with self-worth and self-love at times, but is working to continue to overcome this sense of being “less than” others. Extremely empathic and an incredible listener, Nyra often finds herself in the position of unofficial therapist for her friends and family. She is easily affected by others’ negative emotions, but also finds exhilarating happiness in the joys of her loved ones. Somewhat of a self-described scholar, Nyra spends a lot of time by herself studying foreign languages and writing poetry. She has found that there’s an intense desire to express creativity in her life, whether that be through song, mantra, journaling, or singing. Nyra is not easily angered or frustrated, but when injustice and intolerance rise up, she becomes a fierce lioness and protector of those that may not have found their own unique voice yet.
Hobbies/ Interests: Nyra’s number one hobby is foreign language learning. In addition to her native English and Hindi, she currently speaks fluent Spanish, Catalan, Portuguese, Galician, French, and Italian all through self-study, as well as through university. She has intermediate knowledge of Chinese, Japanese, and a few other random languages. Nyra has a passion for poetry, both writing it herself and translating to and from English throughout the many languages that she practices. This Indian woman has recently gone back to her cultural and religious roots, delving deep into the Shakta Hindu tradition of her family. You can often find her discovering new mantras, meditating upon sacred geometric patterns (yantras) and meditating with sacred hand gestures (mudras).
Job or part time job and description: Nyra is a free-lance translator and interpreter for the languages that she speaks fluently. She also privately tutors her various foreign languages online.
Fears/ phobias/ concerns: Spiders terrify her. She fears transphobic assault as a trans-woman, and worries about her own physical safety at times given the constant manifestation of her mutant powers.
Special talents: Aside from an undying motivation to learn, Nyra has been blessed with a special talent to imitate foreign language sounds. She sounds utterly native in all the languages that she speaks.
Morality
Good/ bad/ neutral/ other: Nyra is, at heart, a good and morally compassionate and loving woman. She follows her heart in all matters, and this expresses itself morally as showing love for all, even when others don’t do the same.
Mutations
Mutation description:
A glowing, incandescent silver lotus flower accompanies Nyra in life, generally floating about a foot away from her body around her head. This lotus is psionic in nature and made of pure psycho-spiritual energy. It is an extension of her mind and soul. The lotus glows constantly, shedding a gentle, warm silver-white light, though she can intensify or diminish the light that it gives off at will. It also gives off warmth (though this heat is gentle and cannot be intensified or diminished), and this warmth can be felt in a radius of roughly 10 feet around the lotus.
Aside from being supernaturally beautiful in its glow and flow, Nyra can control the lotus mentally, causing it to move around in the air, floating or zooming about as desired. This requires almost no concentration at this point. Nyra can also cause the lotus to shed petals, manipulating each individual petal to move around in the air as desired. This could mean anywhere from one single petal taken from the lotus to up to the entire lotus exploding in a storm of petals and controlling each petal individually or more generally choosing to manipulate the petals as a whole, similar to a school of fish or a flock of birds, except that the petals only float/fly about according to Nyra’s willpower.
Aside from shedding light, warmth, and being able to be manipulated on a per petal basis, the lotus’s main power is that each petal can attach to an object or person and teleport them to a desired location. Each petal can only teleport a certain amount of weight, with larger objects require multiple petals. Living creatures and human beings can also be teleported via these lotus petals. Nyra can also use the lotus petals to teleport herself.
Strengths:
The ability to teleport objects and people is the advantage of Nyra’s psionic lotus flower and its petals. Due to the nature of each petal being able to teleport a set amount of matter, Nyra can use her teleportation lotus petals offensively and merely choose to teleport a part of an object/living being, disabling a machine, for example, or even severely damaging or killing a living being.
Weaknesses and Limitations:
Each lotus petal can currently teleport up to 30 pounds of weight, and the maximum number of lotus petals available from the lotus flower is 100. So Nyra could potentially teleport objects or group of people with a combined weight of 3000 pounds using all of her lotus petals. However, maxing out her lotus petal use in one go will be incredibly draining and leave her fully fatigued, typically causing her to fall unconscious. Once used to teleport something, her lotus petals disintegrate in a flash of silver. To recover her diminished supply of lotus petals, Nyra must meditate and maintain concentration on this recovery. As she meditates, her lotus flower is gradually rejuvenated and grows its petals back, recovering 1 lotus petal roughly every 30 seconds of meditation/concentration.
Nyra can currently manipulate the movement of her lotus flower petals in a roughly 100 feet radius centered on the current location of the central lotus flower. She can move the central flower to a maximum radius of 100 feet from her body, giving her a potential total range of petal movement of about a 200 feet radius when her central lotus flower is at its maximum distance from her person.
Nyra may choose to mentally guide the lotus flower petals through the air to their target at a speed of up to 30 miles per hour (roughly 45 feet per second), though maxing out the speed at which the petals travel is both physically and mentally taxing and requires more intense concentration. Nyra typically manipulates her petals at a much slower speed (approximately 5 miles per hour, or about 7.5 feet per second), or even slower speeds, when not under pressure.
Once attached to their desired target, the lotus petals cannot be physically removed, as they are purely energetic and psionic in nature. This being said, psionic influence can remove/destroy the lotus petals. Nyra is aware of any psionic attempt to remove/destroy her lotus petals, and can expend energy to defend them psionically to try to prevent this from happening, though she is not used to defending them, and this would require a great deal of energy and generate significant mental stress. If successfully removed psionically, the lotus petal in question dissolves in a flash of silver. Effectively, to remove a petal psionically is to destroy it. Only those that manipulate psionic energy in the physical realm can affect the lotus petals (essentially those with telekinetic or similar psionic abilities).
Additionally, the psionic manipulation of her lotus flower and its petals is facilitated by distinct hand gestures and movements on Nyra's part. A set of hand gestures, for example, are used to mentally move the lotus flower, other specific gestures are used to detach one or more petals from the central lotus flower, and various others are utilized to guide the petals through the air to their target(s), depending on desired speed and trajectory or flight pattern. Nyra may choose to manipulate the lotus flower (and its petals) without any hand gestures/movements, but this is far more draining and taxing on her energy reserves and so would only be used under dire circumstances (such as being physically bound or in a closed space/setting that prevents small hand gestures and movements).
Nyra is only limited by her imagination in terms of where she can teleport her targets, as long as the desired location is within her normal 5 mile power range. She needs to be able to form a clear mental image of where she plans to teleport a given target, but is not limited to places that she has physically visited in the past. This being said, it is extremely draining to teleport a target to a place that Nyra has never been to before, however, it is possible within the scope of her powers. Nyra typically limits her teleportations to either line of sight or immediate vicinity (for example, teleporting an ally from the ground in the front of her to the top of a building within sight). She is most comfortable with local teleportation (and this requires the least amount of energy); however, she is more than capable of longer range teleportation, again, as long as it is within her 5 mile power radius.
Nyra has a 6th sense of sorts when her lotus petals connect with an object or living being, instinctively knowing whether she has chosen enough petals to teleport a given mass. In the case that she has misjudged the mass of a given object/living person, she may choose to attach additional petals rather than automatically teleporting the object/living being only partially (such as removing the core of a machine but leaving the outer shell to disable it or in dire circumstances teleporting perhap a vital organic area away from a living being to certainly incapacitate or even kill said being).
It is very taxing to attempt to manipulate multiple petals at the same time in different directions, which is why Nyra generally directs them as a group toward their target(s). Also, currently Nyra can teleport to a location within about 5 miles of the current location, though maxing out the distance is very draining to her, and she prefers to teleport within a 1 mile radius so as not to tax herself as much. When choosing to teleport only a part of an object or person, Nyra is drained intensely, even to the point of falling unconscious if used to teleport a portion of a person’s/living being’s body away from them. She basically suffers the equivalent to a seizure, with a bloody nose and sometimes even convulsions if she were to teleport a chunk out of a person, particularly if it’s a vital body area. This is a final resort as she will be incapacitated due to the stress of tearing someone apart.
Physical Abilities
General Physical Capabilities: Nyra has the physical capabilities of an average woman with average weight that engages in moderate physical daily exercise.
Fighting Style: Nyra has no current training in hand-to-hand combat and so relies on her lotus flower to remove dangers from her vicinity, whether that be teleporting herself away from harm or teleporting the threat away from her. Fighting Style Pros/Cons: Nyra has incredible mobility as a teleporter, with the ability to teleport not only herself but also allies and/or enemies out of the way as needed. The nature of her ability to quickly manipulate her lotus petals makes her adaptive, but the limited amount of petals currently means that more intense or longer fights force her to be wise with her usage of her powers.
History Of Your Character
Born in New Delhi, India to a devout Shakta Hindu family, Nyra soon after left India with her family to move to the United States, settling in New York City when she was 4 years old. From a very early age her feminine nature was apparent to not only herself but everyone around her. She spent her early years and adolescence being bullied at school due to her femininity. Her family always supported her, and encouraged Nyra to dress and act as feminine as she wanted. At the age of 8 Nyra chose to start dressing entirely as a girl and use feminine pronouns. Her family saw Nyra’s transgender nature as a blessing from the goddess, and so at least at home Nyra always felt loved and accepted. Attending school in a low-income neighborhood and interacting with other children outside of school was another story often filled with tears, fights, and the occasional beating from a bully. From an extremely young age Nyra found comfort not only amidst her family but in foreign languages. By the time she could drive a car she was conversationally fluent in several languages, with a particular passion for the Romance language family.
At the age of 16, Nyra was nearly killed by a transphobic man who had followed her home after a night of clubbing. He had attempted to sexually assault her but when he approached and pinned her to the ground to realize that she had male genitalia, he went into a rage and started to beat Nyra senseless. It was in this tragic moment that Nyra’s mutant powers activated, an intense silvery light burst forth from her third-eye region between the eyes and an impossibly beautiful lotus flower manifested between her and her attacker. There was no fear. Nyra knew that the goddess had come to save her. Her only thought was “get him away from me!” and the lotus responded immediately, shedding 5 petals that then zoomed toward the man and attached to him. A split second later he had vanished in a sparkling flash of silver. Nyra was left alone, beaten, bloodied and crying, but at least she had made it away with her life. Now this mysterious lotus was humming softly, illuminating the alley where she lay and spreading gentle warmth that engulfed her entire body on that cold December night.
Knowing the sacred significance of the white lotus from the Hindu religion of her family, Nyra was strangely comforted by its presence. She slowly made her way home, realizing that she too must be one of those mutants she had seen on TV and occasionally in New York City. Her arrival at home was a mix of utter concern due to her bloodied and bruised appearance but also intense joy at the discovery of this sacred floating lotus flower. Her parents took it as a sign from the divine, and prayed that night with Nyra to the goddess Saraswati, thanking her for this gift that had saved their daughter’s life. From then on they decided that it was not safe to let Nyra go to school in public, so she was home schooled for the final years of high school. Nyra spent those years mostly inside, afraid that others might see this lotus companion and discover her mutant nature.
At 18, Nyra began university online in translation and interpretation of the Romance languages. She worked through her degree diligently and graduated with honors at 22. She also spent these years discovering more and more about her lotus flower, realizing the relative limitations of her powers and their psycho-spiritual nature. Nyra became very spiritual after the manifestation of her mutant powers, seeing the lotus as a divine gift from the goddess Saraswati. She studied the Shakta Hindu texts and became a true believer in the divine feminine. Now at 22, having finished her education and having spent the past several years basically inside her home with little contact with the outside world, Nyra knew it was time to move forward in her life, to live her truth and let the world see her true nature not only as a trans-woman but as a mutant with an obvious mutation. Her goal was to meet other mutants who also lived openly in society and integrate into that community.

Nyra’s normally bright green eyes suddenly burned completely silver. Her exposed arms and legs were slowly covered in metallic white spirals and fractals, burning bright on her light brown skin. The lotus flower, her constant companion, was floating before her as the ever-present friend that she wished she could have met sooner. Nyra made a deliberate gesture with her left hand, swiping the air, as several flower petals detached from the lotus and began zooming around the room as she guided them mentally. She directed one to her laptop, another few to her bed, and the last one to a shoe on the floor. As each petal made contact with their target there were flashes of silver light and suddenly they had vanished. Nyra smiled. She had been practicing controlling her flower petals individually and being able to manipulate them in different ways at the same time was a sure improvement. She heard a yell from her mother downstairs, “Stop sending all this stuff down here, Nyra! Could you at least stop moving your bed around? You’re making a mess!”
The laptop, her bed, and that odd shoe were transported instantaneously to the living room downstairs, exactly where Nyra had intended for them to reappear. The young woman responded with excitement and joy: “Sorry Mom! I was just trying something out!”
Smiling to herself, Nyra made her way downstairs, her lotus flower floating cheerfully down with her. She sent several flower petals into the air and to their targets, teleporting her bed, computer, and shoe back up to her room. Nyra, who had come to call herself Shakti over the past few years in honor of the goddess, then directed 5 lotus petals to fly through the air to her own body. She loved the sensation of teleportation, the incredible flash of silvery light, and the sensation of moving between dimensions ever so briefly. Shakti reappeared upstairs in her bedroom a split-second later. Another knowing smile made its way up her face. She was getting the hang of this, and she wanted so desperately to meet other mutants. “Maybe one day…” she whispered gently before going back to her language studies.
