Mutations
Mutation description:
Energy absorption and rechanneling
He can channel absorbed energy into a single beam or outward all around him (concussive blast, plasma emission). The heat and light around him changes (heat and light manipulation) especially in his "mutant form".
When engaging his powers, his body turns entirely nonreflective black. His eyes turn a glowing bright white or yellow with pupils no longer visible. When in this form or "mutant form", his body also displays a corona effect. Appearing like an aura around him, different sizes of black, yellow, and orange orbs float around the air close to him and a unified glowing field of bright yellow or white radiance.
Strengths:
Very strong single blast of concussive and plasma energy. It is emitted either in a single direction or radially. Anything in its path gets disintegrated or destroyed. During a linear emission of his energy, heat and light radiates outward like an explosion two yards all around him. The heat to others would feel like a very hot oven and the light would cause normal human beings to look away. The duration of this lasts only until all his energy is exhausted out into the beam.
Kala changes into "mutant form" only when he is engaged in his power. In normal form, he is automatically absorbing energy but in mutant form his energy absorption is increased.
Weaknesses and Limitations:
At the moment or level of his mutation, the only known energy he is absorbing is solar. He absorbs solar energy at all times but when he is not in direct sunlight, use of solar energy stored in his body rapidly exhausts. In his "mutant form", the color black optimizes solar absorption but without sunlight he has no source of energy. It is not yet known if he is capable of absorbing other types of energy. In his "mutant form", the heat and light is not harmful to others.
He can only energy blast at full strength. In doing so, all his energy is exhausted and may even cause him to become very fatigued or unconscious after. After all energy is exhausted in a single burst, his body needs to recharge a day (at least 24 hours) of rest and recuperation to maximum storage.
His blast is limited to only two directions---linear and radial. In a linear blast, the distance this blast reaches is two blocks if it does not hit an object. As it reaches its distance limit of two blocks, the strength of the blast weakens. This linear blast only shoots out his hands. In a radial direction blast, the energy shoots out the surface of his body in all directions and has a radius limit of fifty yards. The outer edges of this radial blast are weaker in strength.
Physical Abilities
General Physical Capabilities: He can run, lift, jump, and perform average physical feats according to a male of his age who exercises regularly at an amateur level and for fitness purposes. He has no superhuman or professional physical capabilities.
Fighting Style: Sanda, Kali, Boxing
Fighting Style Pros/Cons: His training is at a beginner level practitioner and enough to just defend himself. He is not advanced enough as to challenge a group of assailants and is still possible of losing a one-on-one fight.
History Of Your Character
Kala Reign Escalante was born in Miami, FL. His father is of Filipino and Latino descent and his mother is of Hawaiian and Samoan descent. His father was a Philippine Scout Ranger who moved to Florida after some time in service. Here his father met Kala's mother who was working at a resort. Kala grew up with a lot of family around and developed closeness as both sides of his parents' cultures encouraged it.
As a young boy, Kala naturally had fights especially in school. With all the mixed ethnicities around, it was bound for other kids of different ethnicity to tease each other. When he had a few fights with some bigger and older kids, his father decided he needed to train his son in self-defense and emphasized the best way to win a fight is to avoid a fight. Utilizing his training as a Scout Ranger in the Philippines, his father taught him various skills in Sanda, Kali, and boxing. As a side lesson, his father trained him skills in survival. It was nice for Kala as he began to appreciate being outdoors and soon after he began spending more time at the beach along with his cousins.
As a young teenager, Kala started surfing and it became one of his regular hobbies on the weekends and sometimes after school. His relatives shared the same interests as he did including music. This influenced him to get into playing the guitar, ukulele, and encouraged upon by his father, piano. He often spent nights at the beach with cousins or friends at a bonfire playing music and singing together.
The summer was hot a couple years after his graduation. Kala had landed a job at the resort his mother used to work at. His mother trained the current manager years ago so she helped her son to be considered for a position. Although it wasn't like a position in management, he knew hard work starting at the bottom would be a great learning experience and character builder. He accepted an offer and started as a towel boy on the beach. He thought this to be a win for him because he was working on the beach and after work he could meet up with friends.
One night after work, him and his friends decided to go surfing. They wanted to go as a group to look out for each other. Another group of surfers were out also and were being disrespectful. Some even stole their opportunity for waves. One of Kala's friends had had enough and went for a wave. Another surfer of the other group went for the same wave. They both were side by side until the other surfer punched his friend in the face and they both tumbled into the water. Both groups grouped up and faced up, yelling at each other trying to argue who had the wave first.
Kala grabbed his friend and tried to deescalate the situation, "Brah, let's just go already. Getting too late anyway and I still have work tomorrow."
As his friend turned, the other surfer pounced on his friend. Everybody started fighting in the water. Kala was still trying to stop the fight when all of a sudden he was being pummeled on. He did his best to block and parry strikes but the waves were also knocking him around. He could hear some of his friends yelling out for help. At this point, Kala was being pummeled more and being pushed down into the water. He was struggling to breath. A few more punches and Kala could feel himself about to get knocked out.
All of a sudden, he began to feel his anger overcome him. He felt his arms begin to get hot and light began to glow out his body. As he reached upward trying to gasp for air, a big blast of energy came out his fists and shot into the night sky. The beam was long and seemed to go nonstop lighting up the sky as it traveled then disappearing into the distance. The blast was so strong, it propelled him downwards into the water and forced the water to be pushed downward and out all around him. When the water reformed, it launched him into the air and he splashed back into the water feeling very tired. The other surfers were already doing their best to swim back to shore. Some of his friends were doing the same while two of his friends were trying to retrieve him and carry him while swimming back to shore. His two friends brought him home as Kala was too tired to walk and even speak. Upon arrival at his home, his two friends explained to his family what had happened. Kala's family instructed his two friends not to tell anybody. They agreed and left.
Kala was told to stay home by his family. They had warned if any bystanders or even the other surfers they fought with that night would try to identify him or come after him. His mother had covered for him and told his work a story that let him go on sick leave for some time. Kala's family was ready to defend him for what would come if anything would.
In the next few weeks, Kala continued to struggle with thoughts recurring about what happened that night surfing. His friends tried to reach out to him also letting him know they wouldn't say anything to nobody and that they'd be there for him. He had gone into seclusion. He didn't want to be around people fearing he could harm them. He didn't know when his powers would power up and engage again. In concern for their son, his parents sat down with him and asked him what he wanted to do. They brainstormed as a family trying to think if there was anywhere to get help.
Later that night, Kala's father had approached him privately in his room. He encouraged his son to stay strong then went into giving him a suggestion. He had told Kala about the Xavier Mansion. His father had asked if he would like to go and seek this school that could help youths who discovered superhuman abilities. His father, knowing how close Kala is to his family and wouldn't want to leave them, assured him that their family would always be there for him no matter where he would be and that his home would always be here.
Kala had heard of this school. Something he never really thought about until now. He began to think and wonder, what would it be like? Also, being around others like him. Pretty cool, he thought to himself. What helped him decide was the thought of being able to control what he didn't understand and for him to feel he was safe towards others especially his family. He looked over to his father and gave him a nod in agreement, "Give me some time with family first. Then I'll be ready."

It was like any ordinary day. The sky was sunny with clouds and every so often a nice breeze would come through. Kala was grabbing the Greyhound bus to New York and then a cab to the Mansion. He had decided to be left alone at the bus station. He didn't want to go through all the heartache of goodbyes. Plus, he had a big family he would have to go through with all the hugging and consoling. Hours earlier at home, there was a little get together for all that just before he left. He began to think about every detail of the morning…
Waking up was slow. Kala dragged himself to the bathroom as his mother called out. "Hurry up, you don't want to miss your bus. I have breakfast for you ready," she yelled. He just grunted in response. He did his usual routine and was out in thirty minutes. Another yell his mother gave, "Hurry up!!" He rushed over as he began to say, "Alright already, what…"
One of his bigger cousins grabbed him as he passed. Lifted him up and Kala was caught with a barrage of "Hi"s and " Good morning"s. Everybody then came close to give their hugs. Behind his family he noticed his friends. He heard his father begin to speak, "Kala, we put this together because…" His father cut through the crowd and placed his hand on his shoulder. "...we don't know when you'll be back," his father did a fake cry. His mother smacked his father on the arm, "Stop trying to scare him. You come visit when you can, Kala. And call as soon as you get there." Kala could notice his mother tear up as she played it off turning away and trying to fix him a plate of breakfast. All his relatives became silent as they watched. He walked over to his mother and hugged her, "Thanks for the breakfast, ma. I'm sure they can't beat your cooking. I'll come home before you know it and I'll definitely call every chance." His bigger cousin who grabbed him earlier interrupted with a deep voice, "Ehh, I still hea. Why nobody miss me when I go leave fo somewea?" Kala answered, "Coz, you always try fo eat all da food anyway!" Everybody tried to reach over to smack his cousin and laughed. A loud speaker went on and his thoughts went back to his current time. The pa speaker announced it was time to board. He breathed in deep and glanced over to the bus he was to get on. Grabbing his backpack and duffel bag he entered the bus.
As he sat closer to the end of the bus, he settled in comfortably and started to think again. His father had decided to drop him off. When they reached the bus station he listened to his father. "Kala, you can do this. What you have is a gift. You'll figure it out. You'll find 'how' and 'what for'. You'll do good, son. We're proud of you. I'm proud of you. We'll definitely miss you. And like I said, we're always here for you. I love you, son," his father reached over to embrace him. Kala returned the hug, "Thanks, dad. I'll miss and love you all too." He opened the car door, stepped out and closed it shut. At that moment, the bus engine started up and Kala's thoughts were back in his bus seat.
Kala stared out the window as the bus turned to exit and head to its destination. He noticed a billboard as they exited the city with the words "The Sunshine State". A sun on the side of the wording, rays radiating outwards, with a single big beam shooting across the whole sign. He rested his head back till he dozed off to sleep.
