MutationsMutation description: Crystal MetabolizingRather than eating food, Ezmeralda derives her nutrition from mineral crystals. Ingesting the stones as one would food, her mouth, esophagus, and digestive system are built to handle the hard, potentially jagged stones and break down and process these minerals. To derive enough nutritional value from these stones to go about her day normally, she needs to eat roughly half a pound to a pound of crystals. Her system processes crystals throughout the day, “burning” them for fuel.
Gemstone Property-Based Elemental BurstsWhen certain high-quality cut gemstones are consumed, they are stored in Ezmeralda’s body and can be burned as fuel as a last resort, but they are otherwise stored. Depending on the type of stone, Ezmeralda can “burn” these gems to access elemental abilities.
- Garnet, Ruby- Ezmeralda expels a burst of flame from her palm.
- Sapphire, Lapis Lazuli- Ezmeralda rapidly expels a dense mist that can hang in the air for minutes.
- Peridot, Tiger Eye- Ezmeralda’s skin is reinforced to a rock-like durability. This effect starts from her palms and covers her back from there.
- Amethyst, Citrine- Wind whips up and forms around Ezmeralda, spinning around her as the eye.
Strengths:Ezmeralda does not need to eat food for her nutrition, and quartz crystals are surprisingly inexpensive. She can also keep three gems “stored” at a time as a resource. These allow her some flexibility with offensive and defensive capabilities.
Weaknesses and Limitations:Money Money MoneyWhile eating cheap crystals is affordable, gemstones are pricey, so using her powers actually comes at great monetary cost.
Dinner Dates? NopeEzmeralda gets no nutritional value from actual food, and if she does eat it, she’ll get sick akin to someone with lactose intolerance eating a sundae. The food will quickly become weight gained and she will have to work it off through exercise.
Burn, Baby, BurnGemstones burn when they are used for their properties, and while the burn rate can vary between gems or intensity of usage, 1 carat will generally burn with about ten to fifteen minutes worth of usage as a baseline.
Limited GemslotsEzmeralda can only have three gemstones stored to burn at a time. If she tries consumes a fourth gem, the oldest stone she stored will be passed through her and unused. This means she can only have three elements maximum at any given time.
Over the Lips, Through the Gums, Look Out Stomach, Here It Comes… SoonEating a gem does not make it immediately available. It takes about a minute for a gem to go from swallowed to stored, but in that minute, if Ez has three gems already stored, the third one will pass. This means for that minute, Ez only has access to two gems.
Elemental Weaknesses and Limitations- Fire- Bursts of flame cannot travel far before dissipating, being most effective within ten feet. She cannot sustain a stream of fire, cannot control the flames she creates, and individual bursts of flame burn more than sustained usage of the others. Excessive use of these gems in a short time will drop Ezmeralda’s body temperature quickly.
- Water- The mist is dense and Ezmeralda actually has no greater ability to see through it than anyone else. It can generally cover a hundred-foot area before dissipating completely, though it would be less dense at the edges. Excessive use of these gems in a short time will dehydrate Ezmeralda quickly.
- Earth- The rock-like skin is durable, but not unbreakable. High-caliber gunfire will shatter it, and it will not keep her totally unharmed from standard gunfire, though it does hold up well to knives. The rate at which it coats her skin is about an inch per second, so there is time where she is vulnerable. This skin also makes Ezmeralda slightly less maneuverable. Excessive use of these gems in a short time will leave Ezmeralda lethargic.
- Wind- The gusting wind is strong enough to make it hard for people directly around Ezmeralda to balance and it will kick up small items around her, but she is not creating a tornado. This is enough of an air cushion that she can use this gust to soften her descent when falling or dropping from a high place. If she wants to burn her own stones rapidly, the vortex could be enough to take someone off their feet, but this will burn up her gem about sixty times faster than her standard burn rate. Excessive use of these gems in a short time will make it harder for Ezmeralda to breathe.
Crystal Emotional Side-EffectsWhatever crystals Ezmeralda is metabolizing will influence her based on the traits they are said to encourage. Burning Clear Quartz helps her stay calm and clear, Amethyst makes her less prone to stress, and Garnet makes her prone to passion and intimacy. These are effects she cannot turn off, and if she burned gemstones, those effects will be stronger and linger for hours after the stone has finished burning.
Physical AbilitiesGeneral Physical Capabilities: Ezmeralda’s Strength, Reflexes, Stamina, and Flexibility are all above average for a woman of her height and weight due to her time training as a gymnast and a fighter. Her speeds, she admits, is nothing special and roughly average for a woman of her build.
Fighting Style: Since her parents did not pay close attention to the ways Ezmeralda occupied her time, she used their money to take courses in kickboxing and aikido. Up close and personal, she uses a mix of techniques from those lessons to defend herself. She also learned to shoot a firearm and got her license to carry, so at a distance or in a firefight, she can hold her own under pressure.
Fighting Style Pros/Cons: Between her lessons in two styles, Ez has a firm grasp on grappling and kicking to control space. That said, she is 5’2” so her reach with both her arms and legs is limited compared to some attackers. Her strikes are also not as aggressive, particularly in hand-to-hand, which is a style that can be exploited by someone who can defend against her initial strikes and take advantage of the sloppiness of those strikes to counter-attack.
While she learned to fight foes larger than her, there’s a limit to how effective that can be. This is why she supplements her fighting style with her powers and, when necessary, a gun. She is no on the streets to sacrifice herself.
History Of Your CharacterEzmeralda will not talk about it, but she was born into a comfortable lifestyle. She was also born as Catalina Pérez. Her parents’ wealth allowed her to enjoy relative luxury and while they were never the most affectionate parents, Catalina and her siblings were spoiled to make up for it. When Catalina wanted to learn the guitar? She was given lessons. Gymnastics? A coach. Witchcraft? Okay, that one they were less willing to approve of, but Catalina kept studying that one in private. It was not like her parents paid enough attention to care about what she was up to in her private life. As long as their children were happy, healthy, and occupied, they could focus on their own affairs.
The problem came when a fourteen-year-old Catalina stopped being healthy and no one could figure out why. By all accounts, she was drastically malnourished and no diet was fixing her. The family was concerned she had some undiagnosable illness, but they never considered the truth; she was a mutant. Through a stroke of luck, delirious and alone in her room, Catalina needed to eat something—anything. A piece of nearby quartz triggered a hunger response in her and, without overthinking it, she let herself eat the stone, choking it down only to find it passed through her throat surprisingly easily.
And then, much to everyone’s surprise, she started making a full recovery. No one could explain it and Catalina was not about to explain to her parents that she was eating rocks and throwing away her actual dinner. They were happy to see things returning to the status quo, so Catalina focused on avoiding meals when she could, realizing they kept making her feel sick.
Once she was on her mineral diet, Catalina found herself blossoming into her adolescence, bolstering her confidence and social skills at the private school she was enrolled in. After a string of early boyfriends, her parents considered putting her in an all-girls school and she responded by bringing home a string of girlfriends in her junior year.
It was the summer leading into her senior year when Catalina discovered how her parents made their money. Sneaking around the mansion late at night with a classmate, Catalina overheard her parents conducting a private meeting in a hidden study. She listened in horror as they spoke about their plans; M distribution, human trafficking, blackmail. She was faced with the truth that her parents earned their power through crime and exploitation.
Angry, Catalina held her tongue, biding her time until she was eighteen. It was apparent to her that the freedom she had as a kid was an illusion. They would let her indulge in her curiosities, but her lessons were all at home. Her school was private and closely watched, as was her time as a gymnast. She waited, taking up new hobbies like martial arts and firearms. When it was time for her to go to college, despite her parents’ protests, she applied to a school in Chicago. They were not keen on letting her so far out of their sight, but she argued defiantly for why it was the right school.
And it was all a lie. In the first week of school, Catalina staged her own disappearance and ran. She ran and retreated underground, using whatever money she snuck off with to get her new life started. She did not want to use her parents’ blood money, but it helped set her up with a false name and ID, giving her a chance to become Ezmeralda in a city too crowded to care about noticing her: New York City.
Continuing her training while she laid low, she let a few years pass. She let herself continue to blossom and used her looks to start a career online, flaunting what she had to make enough money to buy herself cheap crystals. She waited three years before she started showing her face online, finally convinced her appearance had changed enough to make it harder for anyone to associate her with an eighteen-year-old who went missing years earlier in a different city.
When looking over her collection of crystals that came with her into her new life, Ezmeralda felt a rising anger when she held a ruby necklace her mother had bought her. In an act of defiance, she forced the gem out of its setting and ate it. She was surprised to realize something felt different when she ate the gem. Something… powerful. Seeing this as the goddess giving her a sign, she started exploring the effects gemstones had on her and the effect she could have on the world around her.
Ez was focused on keeping herself safe, but after hearing news reports of a widespread mutant-abduction epidemic, she felt her blood boil like it did when she first discovered her parents’ crimes. She wanted to do something about the crime that kept some oppressed and others thriving. Finally comfortable with her mutation, her fighting ability, and her sidearm, she hit the night streets as the Crystal Witch.
RoleplayWhat’s your OOC alias?: Aly
Where did you learn about this site?: The old gods.
Do you have any other characters on MRO, if so who: Rebecca Grey-Morris Stephanie Graves Vanessa Berry Marisol Cervantes Chrysanthemum Van Hart Sabine Sang Eupraxia Sample RP:Brushing curled locks from her forehead, Charmz smirked and shrugged her bare shoulders at the webcam she was laying in front of. It was a tame night, but she was laying on her stomach across her bed. No one in the chat was complaining. That changed with her next breathy whisper.
”Alright you heathens, this witch is going to take a shower and call it a night.” Noticing the influx of comments, she giggled and added,
”Sorry. The shower’s a single-player game tonight. Til next time.” She closed out by blowing a kiss. The chat protested, but she already clicked the stop button on her stream.
Sighing, she rolled out of bed and to the floor of her apartment, transitioning into some pushups. She had been burning some Celestite all day, keeping her in a calm, almost spacy headspace all day. That was fine for a day of lounging and being ogled, though it also probably led to a tamer show and a lighter income day. She was doing fine for herself right now, so she could take a day like that. Still, if she wanted to go out and
really party tonight, she needed to get her blood pumping.
Getting to her feet, Ezmeralda grabbed a smooth fire agate from the alter on her nightstand and popped it in her mouth, letting is pass her tongue and down her throat. That would keep her fed for a while, encouraging her courage, passion, and risk-taking the longer she let that burn in her stomach.
The steamy shower helped her focus. It was part of her ritual; a cleansing of the world and her distractions. It allowed her to focus and return to the world centered and ready to bring balance to New York.
Donning her costume in the bedroom, Ezmeralda opened her jewelry chest where she had a small collection of gems neatly sorted. After debating, she picked out an amethyst, a tiger’s eye, and a garnet and consumed them in that order. She kept one of each, along with a sapphire, stored in a pouch on her belt and escaped through her alley-side window, carefully scaling the wall from her second-story studio.
She had an earpiece listening into the police radios, hoping for something she could sink her teeth into. Crime was rampant, but she needed to listen for hints to something more sinister. Suspicious activity the police were not willing to address. Reports of criminal enterprises. If nothing came up, she could press some people on the street for leads on something more corrupt than a typical B&E.
For now, she would keep to the shadows and rooftops, treading areas she was treating as high-risk for mutant abduction. What was happening was a rot in her universe, and she wanted to do anything she could to heal it.
