Character's real name: Derrick Brice Codename: Bolt
Gender: Male Age: 18 Nationality/Ethnicity: British Birthplace: London Personality: Derrick can easily be described as an arrogant person, this is mainly due to his Parkour skills which enable him to escape from almost any situation. Depending on his mood he will act the perfect like a gentlemen or a smart mouthed wise cracker, taking ever opportunity to whittle away his current companion’s patience.
Although Derrick’s last name is of Celtic origin his family has lived in England for seven generations and he takes great pride in this, considering himself British through and through, and believing he is slightly superior to everyone because of it. Naturally if anyone insults his homeland he will quickly become angered but rarely does he react physically, preferring to use his wit to turn the tables on the other speaker.
Derrick has few hobbies; one of them as mentioned above is Parkour which is essentially just a discipline that focuses on how to get from point A to point B in the most efficient/quickest way possible. This will normally involve vaulting barriers, climbing walls, jumping from rooftops etc. He will also take any opportunity he can to get his hands on anything containing alcohol, even though he is under age for the states. It’s not that he is an alcoholic; it’s just that he believes he should be able to drink at the age of 18 because that is the legal age in the UK.
Derrick also has a sporadic interest in gambling, which is odd because he appears to have the worst luck in the world, unless he’s running the game that is.
Notes: Does not react well to seeing children being abused. Also has a phobia of drowning, although he can swim. Side: neutral/good
Everyday clothing: Derrick normally wears a long sleeved, grey, unbuttoned collar shirt and a black wife beater under that. He also wears loose fitting, but not baggy, black jeans. He wears no jewelry of any kind except for a slim black digital watch on his right hand. On his feet he wears a pair of weathered grey running shoes. Uniform: covert ops style jump suit (think splinter cell) designed to provide minimal restriction to movement while at the same time granting adequate protection. Pajamas: light grey trousers.
Hair color and style: Black, short Eye color: Green Height: 5’10 Build: Athletic
Scars: N/A Tattoos: N/A Piercings: N/A
Description of ability(ies): Light manipulation and amplification. Essentially it is the ability to create intense flashes of light. He can also concentrate light particles together to create an intense beam of heat roughly two inches long from the end of his fingers. Later his mutation could evolve to allow him to divert light around his form and essentially make him invisible.
He is also skilled at Parkour; meaning that he is in excellent physical condition and is capable of outlasting most normal people.
Also has a small amount of skill with picking locks.
Cons (weaknesses) of ability(ies): The intense flash of light he produces can blind both and friend and foe as well derrick himself if he isn’t careful. He also lacks any true combat skills, relying on the element of surprise to take down quickly before they realize what’s happening. Normally though he will use his Parkour skills to turn tail and run at the first sign of trouble.
Fighting style (if any): Underhanded?
History of your character: Derrick was born in Britain and grew up in a rather rich flat in London. His mother was a chief executive in a marketing firm and his father was high ranking politician. Although his parents were kind and caring they had very little time for him due to their respective jobs. Due to this Derrick found himself spending a lot of time inside when he was young. As he got older (12) he started spending more time outside and eventually made friends with a gang that specialized in Parkour due to their dubious activities and called themselves the “Evaders”. Since nearly everyone in the group was older than Kael they gave him the position of ‘mascot’ and started showing him the basics of Parkour; how to run up and kick off a wall to gain an advantage in height or overcome an opposite wall, how to perform a vault and various acrobatic style dives and most importantly, how to fall.
It was at the age of 15 that Derrick’s mutant abilities manifested themselves. He had been walking home late at night (or morning depending on your point of view) after having competed in midnight tracer course through the city with the rest of the Evaders and had come in fifth out of a group of 25 or so. He had been somewhat pleased with the result because it proved that his Parkour skills were improving. He had been so excited with the results that he failed to make any attempt to check the road he was crossing and ended up in the path of an ambulance that was heading back to the hospital. Derrick had been wearing dark clothing for the run and therefore the vehicle hadn’t seen him but he had seen the headlights. Fear had gripped him at the moment and he had been sure that he was about to die, in sheer desperation he threw his arms up in a meager attempt to shield his body when an intense burst of white light seemed to explode from his very being like a flare. The ambulance had swerved in effort to avoid what it thought was another vehicle and ended up only hitting derrick a glancing blow instead of a direct collision. The force was still enough to knock him off his feet however and he quickly lost consciousness.
Derrick had woken up a few days later in hospital and was surprised to see both his mother and father waiting at his bedside. They had never left the hospital since he had been committed; weathering the uncomfortable seats, bad food and ignoring their jobs until they were sure that he was going to be alright.
Three years passed and during that time Derrick managed to keep his mutation a secret for the most part, even from his parents. Derrick wasn’t stupid; he had watched the news, he knew what happened to mutants when they revealed themselves without any form of protection. The only ones who knew about his abilities were himself and two members of the Evaders whom he knew could be trusted. His control over the intense bursts of light was passable meaning that he could summon it at will and control how the large the flash would be, recently though Derrick has started to think that there might be another aspect of his powers he hasn’t considered.
Eventually though Derricks powers were revealed. He had been out with the other members of the Evaders who had just finished raiding a warehouse down at the docks. They had been ambushed by police just as they had been getting ready to leave. With no obvious avenue of escape Derrick had blinded the law enforcers with a flash equal to 20 flares, this gave him the few seconds he needed to break out and escape along with the other members of the Evaders, however his actions had somehow been caught on camera and he was quickly identified and arrested. Derricks father managed to use his influence to keep the entire incident under wraps and keep it from reaching public ears.
In many ways Derrick was extremely fortunate, although he didn’t see it that way at the time. Both his parents proved to be rather excepting of the idea, after the initial shock had worn off. They had heard of the Xavier institute and decided it was the best option available for Derrick and without asking for his opinion reserved him a place at the school and bought him a ticket for the next plane to New York.
To say that Derrick hadn’t liked the idea would be understatement; he had vehemently argued against their decision since it would mean leaving behind his, friends, country and his home. Gradually though Derrick seemed to comply with their idea and he boarded the plane. Little did they know that Derrick had no intention of going anywhere near the ‘gifted’ institute, he was 18 and both the UK and the US classified him as an adult. He could make his own decisions and he’d be damned before he went to what sounded like some military institute in sheep’s clothing.
Sample RP: Derrick yawned as he slowly shuffled out of the New York airport, as he looked around though his fatigue seemed to vanish. It was late night yet the city only just seemed to be coming alive. Artificial light came from every structure eradicating the dark and almost making it seem like day. The roads were packed with fast driving vehicles, their headlights making a strange blurring affect as they charged past derricks vision. Derrick smirked. He had only just landed and he was suffering from jetlag yet he couldn’t help but feel excited. This place seemed to be the perfect playground for someone with his skills; there were numerous railings, barriers, ledges, tight alleyways and of course fire escapes. He could count at least ten ways he could get onto the surrounding rooftops through unconventional means.
‘Hehe, I can already tell this place is gonna be a blast.’ Derrick thought as he walked down the crowded streets. The streets were somewhat crowded but it was nothing compared to London, but this only made Derrick’s smirk grow; fewer people just means fewer obstacles, the fewer the obstacles the faster he could go and the greater the rush.
As Derrick continued to walk through the dense city he started to wonder what he was going to do to get by. He had already decided that he wasn’t going to go to the institute and he had precious little US currency. He sighed, he would have to get some meager job, probably serving tables or something like that until he got to know the city better and found places that appreciated his talents. ‘Now where the hell am I gonna sleep tonight?’
