Character's real name: Eleki Csonka Codename: Borealis (Latin name for red bat)
Gender: Female Age: 16 Nationality/Ethnicity: Hungarian American Birthplace: Ohiopyle, Pennsylvania Notes (hobbies, phobias, worries, etc.): Eleki’s parents were direct immigrants from Hungary, so she talks with a bit of an accent. It can take some getting used to, but it’s not too hard to figure out. Also, and very important, Eleki has been blind since she was a little girl. Personality: Eleki is a bit shy, but she loves people, and she loves helping them. She will touch anyone she meets right away because it’s one of the few ways she can identify them due to her blindness. She’s very friendly and rather matter-of-fact and to-the-point when she talks. She is a little bit more proper due to her upbringing, but her manners have a tendency to slide once she gets to know someone.
Side (good, bad, or neutral): good, if she had to pick one, she wants to help as many people as she can, in any way she can.
Everyday clothing: simple babydoll-style tees; bootcut blue jeans; a hip-length black jacket if it’s cold outside; black Converse low-tops for shoes. She almost always has a hand-carved walking stick with her that she calls “Asztrik” (she says it ash-trick). Uniform: none Pajamas: boxers and a spaghetti-strap tank top
Hair color and style: Auburn/Red-orange, shoulder-length, curls Eye color: a vacant, green-gray hazel (green around the pupil, then gray) Height: 5’ 7” Build: average build: not skinny, but not fat either.
Scars: various scrapes and cuts from bumping into things and the like Tattoos: none Piercings: none
Description of ability(ies): Eleki has a variation of telepathy (she calls it telelocation) where her brain sends out a sort of net that lets her know where things are. She gets it back in shapes, so if a person were curled in a ball she might not realize it’s a person, which could be problematic at times. She can also receive back feelings from this net-thing because sometimes when people have strong emotions they radiate off their shape. There is a potential for her to broaden the horizons of her ‘net’ as well as make it more sensitive so that she can sense feelings that aren’t quite so strong, and maybe sense what kind of feelings they are (she can’t sense the type of feeling, only that it’s a strong feeling). Cons (weaknesses) of ability(ies): As of yet, her net only has an approximated ten foot radius, which works in small rooms, but in larger areas she can’t tell where she’s headed so easily because she has to make her trips in short increments of ten feet, rather annoying on a longer trip. The other problem is that she can’t sense what kind of feelings someone has even though she can sense that the feelings are strong, so they could be happy, or they could be enraged, or just about anything. Fighting style (if any): none really, she never learned how to fight, she just tries to hit things. It is possible that she could develop a way to use her telepathy to fight, but she doesn’t know how she would go about that.
History of your character: Eleki was born and raised in the U.S., but her parents were both from Hungary. Eleki had a great childhood until she lost her sight. There was a propane explosion that she was right by when she was only five and it completely blinded her. Eleki had a difficult time getting used to not being able to see. The kids at her school were hardly understanding, always pushing her around and playing off her weakness. Eleki didn’t have any friends and was getting beat up a lot; the kids thought it a great game to come up behind her and push her because she couldn’t do anything about to stop them, and she almost always fell. Eleki was ashamed and never told her parents what was going on at school. It was the same way for her all the way up to high school. In the summer before her going into high school Eleki and her parents moved to Philadelphia for her father’s work. Eleki discovered her powers quite recently. When she was a freshman she went to the school homecoming dance with a boy who had asked her out only to find that in the parking lot he and some other boys had planned to embarrass her by pushing her around. She was in tears, she was so embarrassed, wearing her pretty dress and heels and getting pushed around by all these boys that she couldn’t see. And that’s when she snapped and her powers came out in full force, knocking all the boys to the ground. Eleki was as shocked as they were. She took off her shoes and ran home, crying, to her parents. When they asked how she had managed to walk home all by herself she explained to them what had happened. They looked around and decided that the best thing for them to do was to send her to the Institute for Gifted Youngsters in New York. Eleki and packed her bags and her parents drove her to New York.
Sample RP: Tap, tap, tap. Eleki was walking down the street, her faithful walking stick tapping out the ground ahead of her. She didn’t need the cane anymore, but she felt at a loss without it, besides: it kept others aware of her blind condition, which had its perks, even if it wasn’t completely true anymore. She counted her steps under her breath, 114, 115, 116, 117, 118, 119, 120. She was there. She knocked the doorframe of the apartment and was soon welcomed inside by a sweet little old lady. “Eleki! It’s so nice to see you! How have you been doing?” she asked. “I’ve been very well, thank you,” Eleki replied. “My mother was wondering if you had gotten in the spices she ordered yet.” Eleki could sense the lady’s movements as she bustled about the apartment, opening and closing what she guessed were cupboards – she had never realized how many the woman had until now! The woman came back with a small wooden case. She carefully handed it to Eleki, who opened it, eager to know what was inside. She had been eager to ‘see’ so many things since she had discovered her ability. She sniffed each spice to make sure it was right, admiring the bumps and grooves of the glass bottles. She repacked the box and felt around, sliding it into her carrier bag, replacing its spot in her hands with the money her mother had given her for the spices. The old woman took them gently. “Thank you Eleki, you be careful on the way back now, you hear?” she cautioned. Eleki smiled. “Of course Mrs. Nelson, always.” she replied. “Now if you’ll excuse me, I have to be getting home.” Eleki tapped her way back out of the apartment and down into the street. She began counting her steps once more, the one thing she was still required to do. Because she sensed things in such a small area, she got lost easily without her usual counting of steps, she wasn’t used to knowing where everything was because she ‘saw’ it, she was used to having layouts memorized in numbers: fifteen steps here, forty-seven steps there. She made it back most of the way without much happening. But about forty steps from the corner of her street she was blocked by a man. She could sense him waving his hands around in front of her face, probably testing if she was really blind, then he grabbed her messenger bag. She tugged back, but he had already taken it. She could ‘see’ him going away, just walking. She could also ‘see’ a stone on the sidewalk. She reached down and picked it up, took aim, and let loose the stone as hard as she could. It hit its mark and the man went down. She tapped her way up to him and casually picked her messenger bag up, placing it back over her shoulder. She left the man lying there on the sidewalk, he deserved it. She took a few more steps and turned down her street, a few more and she was home. She left the spices on the table for her mom and went down the hall to her room. She laid on her bed and smiled. “I love being able to do that,” she thought.
