Description of ability(ies): Ruben is able to control the energy emitted by all living things for both positive and negative effects such as healing others through touch or causing them deadly pain. When he heals or harms others, he uses something he calls ‘Ghosting’, becoming as a ghost, able to penetrate others’ bodies to touch the source of their life energy. He can further ghost into what he calls ‘The Phantom’. While in phantom form, he can be seen however he cannot be touched. In this form he exists on a plane somewhere between what people can perceive and what they cannot, such as the life energy which he can see. While in this form he can ‘float’ at an enhanced speed but not quite superhuman speed. He himself heals fastest in this state. Taking this ghosting one step further, he can become invisible however once he is invisible; he cannot manipulate the life energy one way or another.
Cons (weaknesses) of ability(ies): When he heals others, he takes their ailment upon himself which causes him the pain or wound. He generally flashes into his phantom form in order to heal and recover from serious wounds quickly. When he heals the life energy of others he often takes their emotional pain as well, which is something not even his phantom form can ease. When Ruben uses his ability in a negative way to kill someone through life energy, his own energy becomes tainted as if it were poisoned. This affects his personality as if he was losing his very humanity and is something he heals from very slowly. The more he kills, the harder it is to heal and the worse his personality becomes.
Fighting style (if any): Street fighting. Though he was never trained in any form of combat, he’s been in his share of fights since childhood and has an instinctual knowledge of unarmed combat.
History of your character: Little is known of Ruben before he was granted a scholarship to one of the finest medical schools in America. He continued his studies and was well on his way to becoming a licensed doctor. During one of his final exams which was a live surgery, what should have been a flawless operation took a fatal turn which he could only mend quickly enough by exposing himself as a mutant and healing the patient through his powers. The patient whose life he’d saved filed charges against the hospital for allowing a mutant to ‘endanger’ his life. The medical board was forced to suspend Ruben for ‘malpractice’ and ban him from ever receiving a medical license.
Sample RP: The air was cool in New York as Ruben walked along the street taking a bite out of his hot dog. He had nothing but a pack of stolen medical supplies and some clothing on his back. He was quickly running out of money and had no place to go. His eyes were glued to the cracked sidewalk that led him aimlessly along as he contemplated what he would do to survive… what would become of him. As if on cue, he spotted a homeless teenaged girl crying. Ruben froze, staring at the girl in pain. He watched her with pity and wondered if he would soon join her.
Kneeling down beside her, Ruben met the girl’s tear-filled eyes. Slowly, he touched her face. The girl was obviously frightened for a moment but the instant Ruben had made contact with her, she began to feel relief wash over her. Just like that, all her inner pain, even the self-inflicted razorblade cuts on her arms no one could see, were all gone. Ruben forced a smile at her as he opened his eyes up, and gave her the remainder of his meal. Standing up and quickly pulling the hood of his sweater over his head, he turned away and walked as fast as he could as tears formed in his eyes. He was reacting to all the pain he’d taken from her… it was now his burden.
Quickly entering a bar went straight for the bartender. “Scotch please… make it a double.” He said as he began to shake under the duress of pain eating away inside him. As the bartender turned around to grab a bottle, Ruben had already abandoned the idea of waiting for the drinks and darted into the bathroom. Locking the door behind him, he opened his backpack and prepared his cocktail of choice, stolen meds from the hospital he was no longer welcome in. Readying a needle, he pulled up the left arm of his sweater revealing the fading scars which he’d inherited from the homeless girl… ignoring them completely, he closed his eyes and let the medicine go to work in his veins…
