The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

>>"I've seen some cool powers over the past while. But that is trippy as hell. I mean it freaked me the **** out at first, but now that it's over and that rush of holy **** wore off...that's kinda cool."
"Yeah. I don't really advertise it." Sveta muttered. She did not mind people complimenting, or even interacting with, her powers, but lately she had been a lot less open about them, thanks to SUPER showing an interest. Also, one could never know when someone could lose control over their boosted powers, even with the best of intentions. It was the mutant version of people who say 'I have good reflexes' while speeding.
>>"My name's Jay. I'd shake your hand, but...let's say we're even."
"Effie." Sveta had recently returned to using her old name for casual encounters. Another safety measure that was almost by second nature by now. "And yeah, let's not... although I am kind of curious how many more dogs you can turn into..."

He nodded. "I understand. I don't exactly wear a neon sign, myself. Didn't take me long to realize that not everyone thinks you're special," he murmured with a shrug. He found himself beginning to relax as they spoke, and he had to admit, her power was pretty damn unique.
"Well, that's kind of a long list, I have the ones you saw, obviously, plus...a boxer, a Jack Russel, a german shepherd and collie mix, a wolf...a corgi pup..." he let his voice trail off as he tried to list them all, and he was sure he was missing at least a few. Then...he had a thought. She had gloves on, and yet...
"Wait...if your power does that through gloves...is it even more potent without them?" he asked quietly; he was curious, but he didn't want everyone and their grandmother to hear what they were talking about.
They mutually agreed on skipping the handshake. Jay was probably tried of randomly shifting into things, and Sveta did not want to show her powers off any more than she already had.
>>"I understand. I don't exactly wear a neon sign, myself. Didn't take me long to realize that not everyone thinks you're special,"
"Yeah" Sveta smirked. The problem was, most people tended to think she was very special. And then she would be kidnapped again. Or attacked, or collected, or whatever. Her powers seemed to be in high demand lately. Turning into dogs... probably not as exciting, but still pretty fun.
>>"Well, that's kind of a long list, I have the ones you saw, obviously, plus...a boxer, a Jack Russel, a german shepherd and collie mix, a wolf...a corgi pup..."
Sveta chuckled at the list. "Dat sounds cute." Turning into a corgi pup? She bet he got a whole lot of belly rubs for that one. Not a bad survival tactic either, as long as no one accidentally stepped on him.
>>"Wait...if your power does that through gloves...is it even more potent without them?"
Sveta sighed. She really did not want more people to know exactly how her powers worked, but she couldn't just outright lie either. The dog-boy had already experienced some of it...
"Not stronger... just... more permanent" she explained finally "If I touch you with gloves, it only lasts while we are touching,,. Still enough to freak people out on accident. I just thought that dogs were safer." she added with a smirk.

"Yeah, it is rather cute, so I've been told," he said with a slight smirk, considering what had happened the last time he used his corgi shift. Sure, that hadn't ended well, but it was sure as hell fun while it lasted. But for multiple reasons, there was no way this was going that direction.
"Wow..that's both awesome, and kinda scary, now that I think of it," he didn't want to think of any other implications that would lead to, but frankly, it was none of his business. Standing to his feet, he moved to sit on the bench next to her. "And here I am with the only major drawback to my power being that I shift naked," he said with a slight chuckle. "But...rapid shifting usually leaves me drained, but I guess your power kinda staved that because I feel fine now. Nothing more than usual."
Sveta chuckled. Of course he had been told that he was cute. A guy that turned into a puppy? Best of both worlds. Who wouldn't want to take one home?... Definitely more entertaining (and fluffier) than Sveta's own mutation.
>>"Wow..that's both awesome, and kinda scary, now that I think of it,"
That was a good summary of Sveta's powers, so she just shrugged in agreement. He joined her on the bench.

"So if the dog shelter picks you up, you gotta explain how a naked guy got into a cage, huh" Sveta smirked "I didn't see a collar on you. Isn't that kinda dangerous in New York City?"

He chuckled as she spoke. "Well...." he paused a moment. "Let's just say I have a handful of 'indecent exposure' infractions on my record. It would probably be more but no judge really knows what else to stick me with besides public nudity. And anything implying that I got arrested for merely being a mutant would be one hell of a lawsuit. Which is a damn shame. I could use that kinda money," he said with a grin, but then sorta shrugged it off.
"Usually anything I'm wearing just sorta....falls off. While I can put my backpack on after shifting...that took practice. And I'm not sure a canine has what it takes to put a collar on. So I just have to hope for the best. Though usually I can outrun them pretty well. I may look like a dog, but inside I'm still me, and I know this part of the city better than I know most people," he said, still sort of grinning.

And anything implying that I got arrested for merely being a mutant would be one hell of a lawsuit. Which is a damn shame. I could use that kinda money,"
Sveta chuckled. "You'd need a good lawyer." Sure, it sounded like he had a case, but probably only if they could prove that the people knew the dog was a mutant before putting it in a cage... indecent exposure was not the worst that could happen to Jay, but then again, it was not exactly easy to explain either, without going into detail about his mutation.

The whole thing... was funny. Sure, it was his life, his mutation, but still, the idea of a guy randomly turning into a dog and running from Animal Control... sounded like a movie. "Well, at least if you are a dog with a backpack, you look like you have an owner. Or on de run from a secret government lab."
How smart did a dog have to be to become suspicious?...
"So, do you... do anything, as a dog? Or is it just for fun?"

Jay chuckled lightly. "Yeeeah...I'd also need good lawyer money..." he said with a mock-pained expression. "But it sure is fun to think about, right?" He looked over at her and flashed a smile.
He laughed as she mentioned his backpack, and he nodded. "Yeah, at least then, people think I'm trained. Though that doesn't exactly help with the sticklers, though. Usually I can outsmart them, get lost in the crowd, something like that. But the backpack is kind of a necessity, otherwise I'm trekking around the city naked, and...well frankly it's too cold for that ****." He gave another laugh, having relaxed considerably since the whole puppy roulette ordeal.
"Usually it's for fun. It's an escape for me, when I'm not playing bass. But you'd be surprised what a roaming dog can hear. Lots of good information can be gathered that way."
>>"Yeeeah...I'd also need good lawyer money... But it sure is fun to think about, right?"
It was. Kind of. Shapeshifting was one of the classics, but everyone put their own spin on it; this guy apparently could turn into various dogs, but could not take the clothes along. It had a whole lot of legal implications, and Sveta was not even sure the American legal system was keeping up with basic mutations just yet. Was there a department for that?... Maybe Haven should look into it.
>>"Yeah, at least then, people think I'm trained. Though that doesn't exactly help with the sticklers, though. Usually I can outsmart them, get lost in the crowd, something like that. Sveta chuckled. New York was not warm enough this kind of the year to go around naked, canine or otherwise. In fact, some overly protective owners were putting little sweaters and coats on their dogs. Sveta thought it was overkill, but at least it made the backpack less conspicuous... on whatever adventures a shifter-dog could get up to in New York.
>>"Usually it's for fun. It's an escape for me, when I'm not playing bass. But you'd be surprised what a roaming dog can hear. Lots of good information can be gathered that way."
Sveta arched an eyebrow. Now that sounded useful.
"Not as much of a puppy as it sounds, huh" she smirked "Is that your side job?... Or is music the side job?"
