The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

Your Govt. Sanctioned Kidnapping May Be Reviewed for Quality
Sveta did not want to think about how their own government might be working with SUPER. Leave it to people to take the worst ideas a whole other world had to offer. Not that they had not been down that path before all on their own... she shuddered as she remembered the META bots that attacked her and Agnes. Nate was on the same page, and she at least appreciated that he did not try to make her feel better by lying.
>>”Of course. No one really thinks they’re the bad guy. I can see where they’re coming from. Mutants can be a danger to themselves. Regulation and monitoring keeps everyone safe.”
Sveta winced at the sentence that mirrored SUPER's philosophy so closely. The false concern in the 'danger to themselves' was what really rubbed her the wrong way; in her experience, people rarely worried about someone else's safety unless they were personally attached, or if their own interests aligned.
>>”They’re wrong, obviously, but it must be an easy way to sleep at night after a busy day of abductions.”
"Dey do keep busy." Sveta muttered with a frown "I don't know if it is the rip, but even while I was there, they were recruiting like crazy."

Nate could tell Svetlana was not a fan of hearing the SUPER motivations parroted. She was an honest person, and with no reason to lie to Nate, even her facial expressions were expressing her opinions. Nate wondered if they tried imparting that mantra on Sveta. They discussed the idea that brainwashing was a tool in SUPER’s kit, but not all brainwashing was overt or mutation-driven. Sometimes brainwashing was just repeating a sentence over and over until it started making sense.
Nate kept his curiosity to himself; there was a difference between asking about how SUPER operates and asking what SUPER did to the recently released captive he was talking to.
The last thing anyone needed was an increase in SUPER’s membership. ”Great. More SUPER Agents. Well, gotta count my blessings. At least they don’t have a mutation-boosting Agent who could kick my ass anymore.” For all his increased body mass, Nate was still not a well-trained fighter and he knew enough about what Sveta brought to the table not to pick a fight with her.
Sveta sipper her tea, enjoying the small blessings in her life. Sure, SUPER had tea in their cafeteria, but it came with a side of brainwashing and expectations, and that made the taste somewhat bitter.
>>”Great. More SUPER Agents. Well, gotta count my blessings. At least they don’t have a mutation-boosting Agent who could kick my ass anymore.”
"I can still kick your ass." Sveta noted with a smirk. She was glad she got to banter with a colleague, instead of faking it with a SUPER agent. Again, small blessings.
"It seems to be dis is becoming a PR problem." she sighed "SUPER sells the whole keeping-people-safe to mutants on both sides. There needs to be another story told, about what dey really do."

Nate chuckled as Sveta put him in his place. He held his hands up, one still holding his cup of tea. ”Hey, no arguments from me. There’s a reason you don’t see me picking that fight,” he joked. Nate was still not much of a fighter and, whenever possible, he relied on his shadows and his ability to go into an invulnerable shadowform to keep himself protected in a fight. The nice thing about being a shadow was the lack of pain when someone punched him in his malleable face.
When he arrived at Svetlana’s apartment, he was unsure of how much she would want to discuss her captors. Not only were they discussing SUPER, but Svetlana had some insight on the challenges of fighting a government-sanctioned foe. ”I think you’re absolutely right, Svetlana. Another story has to be told. We just have to be careful where it comes from. If we make ourselves vocal opponents of SUPER, we’re painting a target on this place and ourselves.” It did not need to be said, but he doubted SUPER would hesitate to put loved ones in play for leverage. ”We do have connections, though. Politicians, media—old and new. We could get some of the real story floating out there. No definitive origin point; just a lot of story pieces gaining traction.” It was a challenge to fight an enemy while staying in the shadows, but it gave an element of surprise they could keep pulling from.
Nate watched Svetlana closely, hovering over his tea and appreciating the scent as he considered her and her insight. ”I don’t think SUPER is the kind of threat we can dismantle overnight. But I do want to see them dismantled.”
>>”Hey, no arguments from me. There’s a reason you don’t see me picking that fight,”
Despite her gloomy mood, Sveta smirked at the reaction. Damn right. Not that Nate was in a bad shape, but at this point, she had gotten more fight training than half of the X-team, and she was usually desperate enough to resort to it, too. She hoped one day she could use in in a constructive manner.
>>”I think you’re absolutely right, Svetlana. Another story has to be told. We just have to be careful where it comes from. If we make ourselves vocal opponents of SUPER, we’re painting a target on this place and ourselves.”
"They have a target on everyone" Sveta sighed "But yeah, you're right. Direct opposition is not gonna hurt them much. They eat that for breakfast."
>>”We do have connections, though. Politicians, media—old and new. We could get some of the real story floating out there. No definitive origin point; just a lot of story pieces gaining traction.”
"We should get some witness accounts floating." Sveta suggested. If it came from multiple people and personal experiences, maybe it would catch on better.
>>”I don’t think SUPER is the kind of threat we can dismantle overnight. But I do want to see them dismantled.”
"I do too. It was not my first time being kidnapped." she frowned "But there were other recruits in their... young ones... who were getting their minds wiped and their lives wrecked. They need to go down for that."

Nate knew Haven needed the kind of experience Svetlana could bring to the table, but he wanted to know she could see the big picture. Running up to a problem and beating it with a stick was the way X-Men solved problems. Haven had to operate with more finesse.
Fortunately, her head was in the right place. Witness accounts speaking out against what SUPER is doing would be a great start. People would oppose an organization more if they saw the evidence of people suffering. The human (or mutant) element made any problem more real and easier to empathize with. ”I totally agree. Start a groundswell of support we can build on.”
Whatever happened at SUPER, it had an emotional impact on Svetlana. She was not the only one captured, and according to her, young recruits were being molded and even brainwashed to join the SUPER cause. It was sickening, but it also meant Svetlana was not just looking for personal revenge. That was important, as well; revenge was a messy motivator that kept people from making logical decisions. ”You’re gonna be vital in all this, Svetlana. No one knows what we’re dealing with to the extent that you do. I really hope, when the time comes, you would be willing to be at the table when we decide how to deal with them. Not just them, but any group like them.” Nate did not want to overtly offer a seat at the Inner Echelon to Svetlana because he alone did not have that authority. That was the whole point of their structure. He did want to know, before anything else, that Svetlana was interested and ready to take on a larger role to deal with the threats to mutantkind, regardless of the world it came from.
Sveta did not like to imagine what the young recruits went through after SUPER got their hands on them. She still felt deeply ashamed about helping to recruit Samantha, even though she knew Kristoph would have gotten to her with or without her help.
>>”I totally agree. Start a groundswell of support we can build on.”
Sveta wondered if it would take. There were many people passionate about social justice... but also a lot of them that still believed mutants were a threat to humanity. Would one outweigh the other, if the right stories were told with the right emotional impact? Honestly aside, that sounded like a job for a PR professional.
>>”You’re gonna be vital in all this, Svetlana. No one knows what we’re dealing with to the extent that you do. I really hope, when the time comes, you would be willing to be at the table when we decide how to deal with them. Not just them, but any group like them.”
Sveta tilted her head as she nursed the mug of tea between her palms. Was there more to that question than what it sounded like? She knew that Devon had an inner circle running Haven, and that they had considerable resources and influence for the specific purpose of helping mutants in the face of situations like this... but after so many years of being a lone wolf, by chance and by choice, Sveta was surprised to even think of the option.
"I want to help" she nodded slowly "After being forced to work with SUPER, de least I can do is put in the work with what I know, and help take them down. But even beyond that..." she paused "Let me put it this way. Did Devon send you?"
*italics are spoken in Russian* Thanks to Siren for the sig and avi!
It was no surprise that Svetlana might think Nate was an agent of Devon for the visit. The founder of Haven had a very hands-on approach and a desire to keep control of everything in his life. Devon was a good guy, but he operated on a foundation of order that disliked variables out of his hands.
As much as Devon could be a bit of a control freak, he also trusted the members of his Inner Echelon. Nate had a degree of autonomy, even if all major decisions had to be discussed by the IE before proceeding. Once again, order and control.
”I sent me,” Nate replied, taking a sip of what remained in his teacup. ”I wanted to check in and I wanted to have a talk with you, if you were up for it. I’m glad you were, because I think you have experience and insight that Haven could really use. And not just with SUPER. I really think you have a lot to offer beyond your a**-kicking abilities. If you were interested in a larger role, of course.”
Nate placed the empty teacup on a nearby table, meeting eye-to-eye with Svetlana. ”This isn’t SUPER. We’re not going to make your decisions for you.”
Sveta paused for Nate's answer, waiting for him to help her make a point.
>>”I sent me. I wanted to check in and I wanted to have a talk with you, if you were up for it."
"See, dat's exactly what I mean. People in Haven care. They don't just do what the boss tells them to do. That's why I was willing to talk."
>>"I’m glad you were, because I think you have experience and insight that Haven could really use. And not just with SUPER. I really think you have a lot to offer beyond your a**-kicking abilities. If you were interested in a larger role, of course.”
Sveta smiled a little. It was nice to be recognized for her a**-kicking abilities. For the longest time, she was mostly used for her power boosting; it was good to be an active agent on her how merit, for once. Another point for Haven.
>>”This isn’t SUPER. We’re not going to make your decisions for you.”
"I know." Sveta nodded "I was... working alone for years, because with what I do... and how I do it... it is hard to fit into any place. But Haven... somehow, is different. And you are right, not just because of Devon." she added with a small smile "But de answer is yes. I want to put in the work. I think we can make things happen."
*italics are spoken in Russian* Thanks to Siren for the sig and avi!
Despite his nature as a cautious, calculated person, Nate had very few doubts about his decision to side with Haven in a world where many organizations claimed to be working for mutantkind. Haven went about its work in a smart, methodical way unlike the X-Men, but it also gave its members the freedom not to feel forced into any choices, especially ones they would not be comfortable making. They rested in a grey area of the moral compass, but no one would be part in something they were not ready to be involved with.
Svetlana was apparently ready to get more involved. She had been a loner for so long, but Haven was the place where she fit. After living for so long as a nomad, Nate could relate to the renewed sense of belonging. It was nice to have a place and a purpose he could claim as his own.
”Well, I can’t promise anything yet, but I’ll be in contact, Svetlana.” Nate started to offer his hand before pulling back, remembering to keep his social instincts in check around someone who did not want to be touched. ”Right. Sorry.”
Instead, Nate nodded and smiled confidently. ”We’ll do great things, Svetlana. SUPER and their kind won’t be ready.”
