The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

Putting a shirt on the coral kid was something of a challenge; Maya bit back a chuckle as the outcroppings held the shirt out in odd angles, but once Kalos found a way to wear it that was comfortable for her, it did not look bad at all. Maya wondered how on earth they were going to get the kid an entire wardrobe... but that was a question for tomorrow, not tonight. She stifled a yawn as Kalos twirled around in her new nightgown.
>>"Is it time for sleeping?"
"Yes, it is time for sleeping" Maya smiled, not entirely able to mask how tired she herself was, even though Kalos had definitely had a more intense day than her (minus getting stabbed). She rolled the covers back on the bed and adjusted the pillows a little, and then allowed Kalos to climb in before she tucked her in. "I'll go to bed soon too, I'll just take a shower first. I'll be quiet. Um... goodnight, Kalos. Sweet dreams."
Kalos flopped down onto the bed face first and rolled around a bit, breaking off some chunks of coral here and there. The bed was HUGE. Three of her could lay across it and at least one more in how long it was. After some amount of wiggling and marveling at the finery, Kalos and pulled the cleanest, coziest covers up to her chin. The covers were lumpy from the tenting that her coral protrusions made, but it didn't seem to bother the girl.
"Hero Maya?" Little blue eyes locked onto her target, suddenly nervous. "When I grow big... can I marry you?"
Kalos burrowed in in the most adorable fashion; some of the coral rubbed off, and Maya winced as she saw that, but the girl did not seem bothered by it. It was probably like losing some hair... in a weird way. She tucked the girl in with a warm blanket, and chuckled as she settled in for the night. She was adorable, and quickly warming up to the new place that was safe and clean and...
>>"Hero Maya?... When I grow big... can I marry you?"
Maya blinked, once again stopped in her tracks on her way to the shower, at a complete loss of words to say. How did someone answer something like that?...
"Ummm..." she hesitated, trying to come up with something that would not be a promise, but also would not break the girl's trust "Marriage is a complicated thing, Kalos. But I'll tell you what. I always wanted a little sister... does that sound good to you?"
"A brother and a sister." A husband or wife was one thing. They'd be obligated to one another and bound so long as they procreated, which Kalos never ever intended to do.
But a sibling... siblings were blood. Siblings were forged in the fires of shared experience. Hero Maya had not been there for every kick or missed meal, but her hero was here. Now. And he... she... had been there when it mattered the most: when Kalos needed to get out.
"Very good." She practically radiated pleasure as she snuggled into her pillow. Her restless energy, she would channel into stillness because her hero needed rest. "I will try to be a good little sister."
It was a nice compromise. Marriage was very far from Mirror's mind, but siblings, she could definitely deal with. She had been adopted by a trio of shifters once, and although their paths had diverged, she still remembered what it felt like to have siblings, adopted or otherwise. Kalos was a lot younger, and she was older now than she had been back then... but she meant the offer seriously. The kid was a precious cinnamon bun, and she would be the most adorable sister ever.
>>"I will try to be a good little sister."
"You will be." Maya smiled softly, turning the lights off. She had not expected to end the Atlantis mission with a brand new sibling... but she found that she did not mind.
