The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

Step, together, step step. Step, together, step, collision. The Ranger had carried on as usual, Noel had not. It was nothing major, the Ranger was ready to just keep on going. Noel at this point decided to stop staring at her feet. This was good, and not just because it is a weird posture to dance with and she would be able to follow his eyes to have an idea where they would be going.
He’d rather be able to look at her face than the top of her head. It was a rather pretty face.
Now that Noel was looking up she’d seen him smiling at her. She asked, “What?” and smiled herself.
”Nothin’.” He said. Then because he knew she could state that little lie he continued. ”I’m jus’ happy to be here dancin’ with you.”
And then the song was ending. The Ranger gave a brief explanation. ”At the end of a dance, the way t’ say thank y’ to y’r partner is by spinnin’ them.” He could get into the proper way to do spins later. For now he just raised his left hand and indicated which way to spin with his other hand pressing against Noel’s back. A spin out, a spin back. No need to be fancy.
The next song made Ranger groan a little. Play it Again by Luke Bryan. It would serve for dancing, but the Luke Bryan was a polished pop product of the Nashville machine of country music destruction.

With you, he’d said. She felt a little thrill.
”Oh. That’s--”
Oh no. No, no, no, no. That wasn’t the important part of that statement. He meant that he was happy to be dancing. The with you was just that he had someone. It could have been anyone. Dancing was not exactly a solo event.
”--lucky for you that I could fit you in my busy schedule.” She tried the humor tactic again. Humor was a great way to deflect.
She had the span of a twirl out and back to figure out where to go from there. Since there were no giant gaping holes to jump into and the earth didn’t swallow her up in that time, She came right back to his hand and let him put his hand on her back.
”Lucky for me that you didn’t have anything better to do.”
The next song started, but Hunter seemed a bit irritated. Noel rolled her lips together again, determined to do better.

“Oh. That’s lucky for you that I could fit you in my busy schedule.”
Noel’s got jokes.
”Lucky for me that you didn’t have anything better to do.”
”I’m honored y’ were able t’ squeeze me in between boot heists.” He laughed. ”An’ I’ve been lookin’ forward t’ this f’r days.” He had made sure nothing could move it from his calendar.
The Ranger gave Noel a few measures to try to feel the beat. Into the song they went. Step, together, step, step. The Ranger could only take it so long, he had to make his feelings on the song known. ”Nashville…” He said, his tone indicating an incredibly solid dislike as he shook his head. Then it was back to the narration.

Looking forward to the event and the act of dancing, Noel reassured herself. Not the company.
Okay. Maybe the company. But definitely not only the company. There was kind of a difference.
"I'm offended you think I'll go out and steal just any old boot." She was not offended. She was teasing. Her power didn't care.
And Hunter was off about Nashville. Once she'd asked, he had some opinions that he apparently could not contain. His counting the beats changed into a lament about the integrity of country music. It was a couple songs and a whole lot of laughs down the line when Noel realized that they were, in fact, actually dancing.
The songs had rolled around to something more gravelly and a lot less polished. She'd gotten to twirl more than a few times. Her headache was relentless. Somehow she was still smiling. She never would have made it this long in a crowd alone. Hell, she never in a million years would have been here in the first place.
"Hey. Thanks." Ugh. Embarrassing. She dropped her forehead against his shoulder, unsure of what she'd been trying to say exactly. "Just. Yeah. Glad I didn't chicken out, I guess."

"Of course not. Jus' the nice ones."
And they danced. The Ranger carrying on about how Nashville had given the world country music and then done everything in its power to destroy it and replace it with some polished pop country crap. From there they carried, the Ranger no longer counting the steps for Noel.
Noel was thrown in and swam. Over the course of several songs she was successful. Noel was two-stepping. And what's more she was two-stepping with the Ranger. No longer worrying about keeping verbal track of the beat he was able to simply enjoy the music and even more so, the company.
Blessedly the songs were transitioning from the streak of Nashville songs to the less refined styles like Outlaw, Red Dirt, and Texas country. Eventually, Where the Gringos Don't Go by Roger Creager came on. It was a song that lend itself to two stepping in an almost slow dancing manner.
While they danced Noel thanked the Ranger and brought her head forehead against his shoulder. "Just. Yeah. Glad I didn't chicken out, I guess."
"I'm glad y' didn' chicken out, too." He steered them out of the way of a some other dancers who were working the circuit a little faster than them. Off to one of the corners to just circle. He touched his chin to her head and said,"I've really enjoyed bein' with y' tonight."

She was hiding. Noel could admit that much to herself with her face pressed against his shoulder. It turned out to be okay. He put his chin on top of her head and they kept two-stepping, albeit they were going slower. That was okay. This was... okay. Right? She couldn't decide if that feeling was panic or if that was just how it felt to dance in close proximity. Impolitic proximity.
He'd been saying over and over that he was enjoying himself. That still didn't exclude the idea that he was doing the 'nice guy' thing. She could keep kidding herself, but she really hated seeming coy so she swallowed her pride and finally just asked. "Does that mean tonight's over?" It sorta sounded that way.
Despite the crowd, she could admit that she didn't want it to be. "Can we keep going?"

"Does that mean tonight's over?"
The Ranger hoped not. The crowd was thinning out, but he had no desire to leave. Even if it was just him and Noel it would be fine. Scratch that, if it was just them it would be better than fine.
"Can we keep going?"
"They'll have t' throw us out." Something far more likely down where was from where dance halls closed down at 0200. Here in New York City they didn't have to close down until 0400. Which seemed too early to him at that moment. ”I’m not ready f’r tonight t’ be over. Not ready t' stop dancin' with you.”
The best part was not that he was dancing with Noel, but that she wanted to keep dancing. He would stay there and dance as long as she wanted. Hell, he’d fire up the radio and dance in the parking lot after if she wanted.

He meant that.
She wanted it.
Uuuuugh so unfair. Noel made a little strangled sigh.
"Right. I forgot. You're Michael Hunter, lady killer." She chuckled against him before pulling back to tease him face to face. It just wasn't the same if teasing his Adam's apple. "That was a real ovary exploder. You can't just say things like that."
He was making it easy to fall into the delusion that something could happen here. Right. Sappy moment over. Noel just had to remember for herself of why it'd never work.
The memorymancer grinned. "Let's dance until they kick us out." Because she wanted to. Because they could. Because it'd never happen again.

The Ranger grinned. Noel saying that meant he must be doing something right. What was even better is he wasn't having to be fake to do it. Though, one could not be fake and be a successful lady killer with Noel.
Noel then moved her head so they were face to face and said that what he'd said was, "a real ovary exploder." That was a new one. And he couldn't just say things like that?
"If I can't say that I could always lie, but somehow I think y'd know."
"Let's dance until they kick us out." Noel said grinning.
The Ranger grinned back, "That I can do." And at that moment it was all he wanted to do.
As the night became morning, and the morning became late morning, the crowd came and went a few times. It was the city that never sleeps after all. While they stayed dancing and carrying on, the Ranger also had the chance to give Noel a crash course in country-western waltz and polka dancing. They even played Copperhead Road by Steve Earl, so Ranger taught her the line dance to it. They even played Cotton Eye Joe as performed by Rednex, again he taught Noel the line dance.
At one point the DJ announced the next song was, "for the ladies," and that the following song was, "also for the ladies." The Ranger commented that, "It's country, it's all for the ladies."
Finally the last song was played Feet Don't Touch the Ground by Stoney LaRue. The DJ dedicated it to, "The couple who have been here all night dancing like there's nothing else in the world." A slow song to end the night on. And in the one of the choruses the Ranger couldn't help himself. Spin Noel out, two spins back, spin himself, spin Noel again, then back to dancing. And one last spin as the song ended catching her in a hug on the return as the lights came up.
The night could not have been any better. He'd danced with Noel all night and morning and now he stood there holding her at the end of the night. He didn't want to move, to return to Haven. For the night to end.
A grasp for something to not let the night end, "Tacos?"

Sometimes they danced close, sometimes the danced side by side. They spun, they danced in a line, and they found some kind of middle ground between decorous and country for a country western waltz. Not only dancing, but talking too. Noel found it easy to admit when she didn't know something that should have been obvious, like her last name.
She caught him up on the last three years of her life as best as she could in a general way. Mostly that she'd been a bodyguard and English tutor to a rich child with a crazy father as her day job. And that she'd still found time to work a less than sterling night job. She also threw in that she'd seen memories of Ancient China and Ancient Greece, since it seemed to be one of the things she was least likely to forget. And she touched on her legal identity woes, specifically losing her concealed carry license which hadn't been easy to come by in the first place.
By the time the employees shut off the music, Noel's feet and calves were sore and they were back to laughing. She didn't feel like she'd laughed that much in... maybe ever.
She certainly hadn't stayed up until 4am in a long, long time.
"Oh man. After midnight tacos? This is like college all over again." But it wasn't like they hadn't earned them. And it wasn't like she was about to say no. This might have been the longest she'd been outside and managed for it not to feel like a burden on the other party.
The Ranger had a food truck in mind, but even in New York, by the time that 4 am had rolled around, the drunks and best food trucks alike had all gone home for the night. A quick phone search and they were able to reorient to a 24 hour food truck that served breakfast, specifically breakfast tacos.
Breakfast tacos still counted as tacos, right?
"So, yeah. Now I just have to figure out what to do with my life." Noel streeeeeetched and did her best not to spill her coffee. Food cart coffee wasn't her favorite, but it went well enough with eggs and bacon. "You don't have to work tommor-er like in a few hours, do you?" Rather than risk his racecar seating, they were leaning against a concrete retaining wall just a few paces away from the food spot.

While they danced, they had talked. Noel told the Ranger of her last three years, of memories of the ancient world she had, and of her legal problems. The Ranger gave her a brief rundown his last three years, as much as he could without violating any agreement for secrecy.
“Oh man. After midnight tacos? This is like college all over again.”
”I’ll take y’r word for it. I enlisted right out of high school.” He’d done some college while in the military but had never had the college experience or completed a degree. If college meant staying out until 0400 dancing then getting tacos, he might have to enroll. Maybe not, doing this multiple nights a week might be problematic.
Eventually the dancehall employees shooed them out. They wanted to clean up so they could go home. This left the Ranger and Noel out by his car searching for a food truck still open. Finally finding one they jumped in the car and headed over. It wasn’t a long drive, not because it was close but because traffic was not its normal oppressive self. The Ranger could let the Hellcat Tamer’s engine roar.
The food truck was serving breakfast tacos. Taco was in the name, still counts. Besides, it meant a taco with bacon. Who can say no to that? Certainly not the Ranger. They ordered and the Ranger paid.
Food and questionable coffee in hand, they leaned against a concrete pillar. No food in the car. Racecars didn’t need to smell like tacos and coffee. The Ranger dug into his breakfast taco, which, due to him paying for extra everything, could barely be contained within its tortilla. The real trick was keeping the salsa from all running out as he ate.
“So, yeah. Now I just have to figure out what to do with my life.”
The Ranger swallowed and said, ”If y’ decide y’ want t’ work security again I know I can help. Anythin’ else an’ at least I can maybe help get y’r paperwork movin’.” The contacts he’d had to make to get his PMC set up in the city should be able to help Noel. A contact in the police, a couple in various governmental level, and some at the various alphabet soup departments and bureaus that make up the Federal side.
Did he have to be at work today? This was something he hadn’t even thought about. Being with Noel he’d forgotten about everything else. ”I don’t have t' be. I’ll call the kid who works in the office when he gets in an’ let him know I won’t be. Almost everybody else will be at Haven anyway. Biggest contract I’ve got at the moment. They know where t’ find me if somethin’ goes sideways.” And they're competent enough to handle anything short of a war kicking off in New York City for a few hours.
He drank some of the coffee. It wasn’t bad, but it wasn’t something he would recommend to anyone else. ”Any thoughts on what y’d like t’ do?”

"That's really more of a breakfast burrito, rather than a taco." But really Noel was equal measures impressed at watching the Ranger eat that and depressed that she hadn't thought to double the bacon on her at least.
Oh. He could help. Hmm. Noel waded through a bit more of her soft taco while she mentally chewed on that one. "Thanks, but, I dunno. I'm pretty sure there's good reasons for people like us to keep business and pleasure separate." The stakes, for one thing. Hades had certainly wanted to blur that line. Now, here was Mr. Hunter, coming from the opposing angle.
She hadn't thought that statement through until she heard it in her own voice. This was certainly a pleasure, but to turn down business in favor of retaining whatever this was... it wasn't going to go anywhere.
Embarrassed, she walked her statement back. "I'll take it under advisement, though. The paperwork, at least."
Oh and now was she supposed to encourage him to skip work?
"You're quite the degenerate: skipping work and staying out all night." Noel balled up the foil of what had been more than enough taco. Where Hunter packed his giant food baby away, she couldn't guess.
> ”Any thoughts on what y’d like t’ do?”
Oh. She had thoughts. Thoughts that embarrassed and amazed her.
"I'd say that you should fight me, but even with that burrito I'm too rusty to spar." She popped her non-coffee hand at his belly so that just the tips of her fingers scuffed along the shirt over his stomach. "Plus, I mean this coffee's great and all, but I'm not sure we can realistically keep this party going too much longer."
It certainly sounded as if he didn't want the evening to end despite the dawn.

”What’s a taco? A tortilla with meat cheese an’ vegetables. What’s a burrito?. A tortilla with meat cheese an’ vegetables.” The Ranger said between bites. It was similar to something he’d heard a comedian say once.
The Ranger paused mid chew, “...keep business and pleasure separate.” He resumed chewing a moment later then swallowed. The Ranger had meant getting her back into the industry, not necessarily work for him. Though, them being in the same industry had put them on the same job before despite working for different companies with different employers. Noel had brought up it being a mix of business and pleasure. Did that mean she thought of this as more than just a fun night out dancing?
She added to her comment before Ranger could reply. She would take it under advisement, At least the paperwork part. It sounded like her trying to roll back a bit of what she had said. Him helping with paperwork wouldn’t be mixing business with pleasure so much though.
”That’s fair enough, keep it pleasure then.” He said smiling to her. ”Jus’ let me know what paperwork you need pushed through, I’ve got some old war buds I can call t’ get things movin’.”
“You’re quite the degenerate: skipping work and staying out all night.”
”The worst. Next I’ll wear a leather jacket an’ ride motorcycles.” He paused for a moment before adding, ”Oh, I already do. Ladies hide y’r daughters.” He resisted the urge to pop his collar.
The Ranger finished his taco as Noel said that they should fight. He had to stop from spraying the remains of his taco. It had not been an answer he was expecting. Also easy to control laughter when a hand flies at your abdomen and stops just touching your shirt. “...but I’m not sure we can realistically keep this party going too much longer.”
A final swallow and the Ranger crumpled his foil up in a tight little ball. He then brought that hand to his abdomen where Noel had not struck. Real morning, not this the Sun isn’t showing but people are about morning, was fast approaching. He sighed and said, ”I think y’re right. Cain’t fault me f’r tryin’.” He smiled again looking at Noel willing time to move slower.

She had totally misread the situation.
Noel internally wailed in despair. That was a nice guy smile. That was a nice guy nothing answer. When had she gotten her hopes up? Probably somewhere after they'd danced slow and close, but before tacos. Definitely before tacos.
And then she had to go and make even more of a fool of herself by laughing at his dumb joke. Everything was embarrassing now. She grasped at straws, anything to deflect from how mortified she was. Maybe he wouldn't notice? Maybe he'd play along. She could salvage friends and neighbors out of this right? "Dude, nobody has a car in New York and you have a car and a motorcycle?"
Should she chug her coffee to get it over with and just get home? She didn't want to be suspicious. Also... "This coffee's kinda terrible." She chewed her lip apologetically. "I wasn't gonna finish mine."
Of course, not finishing meant they never had to leave, right?
Nothing at his mention of just keeping it pleasure. Maybe she only did think of this as just a fun night out dancing. Maybe he ought to stop beating around the bush and let Noel know he was interested in her. That was likely best left for after the drive back, just in case things didn't go well.
"Not only do I have a car an' a bike, I have an F650. I call it the Fordasaurus. It's my work truck, y' never know when y'll need an urban assault vehicle."
Noel wasn't going to finish her coffee. This might speed up the end to the night a smidge. The Ranger must just be use to a lower caliber of coffee from his time in the military. He drank some more of his while Noel looked for a trashcan. "There was one by the food truck I think."
He downed the rest of his coffee. No sense in him being slow if she was just going to toss hers. Instead he went with her to the trashcan and discarded the foil and now empty coffee cup. Then it was back to the car. Again the Ranger opened the door for Noel.
Sunlight broke over the horizon as they drove back to Haven. They had been out literally all night. Sunset to sunrise.
