The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

The fight was surely a spectacle, to be put lightly. Shelby would have liked to watch on in equal parts awe and glee as he boyfriend decimated the Orc King and quite a few of the other surrounding orcs. Unfortunately she couldn't, as a few had broken through her line of zombies and were headed directly for her. She took two hits, which quickly dropped her health by half until the chains were no longer needed and she could throw herself out of the way. Health from the few remaining zombies boosted her HP a little, but it wouldn't last for long if she didn't escape or take the orc pressing down on her out quickly.
The artist summoned her staff back out, gripping it to try and stop the swing from an attacking orc. Its sword nearly knocked the staff out of her hands and rattled her so badly she stumbled a few steps. Jesus! They freaking hit hard, didn't they! Saph was a monster for being able to deflect blows like that left and right!
With a huff her phantom hand came back out, swatting the orcs weapon away for her. She hurried back a few more steps and aimed her next spell over toward where the Orc King had perished. Just as her pursuer retrieved his weapon and came at her again she'd already cast her next spell and brought the King back to life. With a roar the huge zombie!orc started to swing at all of the remaining enemies.
"HA--!" Her bark of triumph was cut off as the closest orc to her swung his sword and knocked her clean off her feet, across the room, and into a few stacked barrels... which exploded and rained broken wood all over her. The Zombie!king continued to stomp around, grabbing up other hapless orcs and delivering onto them a swift, violent death.
Her plan was brilliant. He hadn't even thought of resurrecting the damned BOSS as a minion. Saph laughed for a second as he was a afforded a moment to watch, and then gasped as she was sent flying. He ran to her side, taking out his new sword, which was smaller than it had been in the king's hands for some reason, and taking out an orc headed her way.
After that, it was as easy as admiring the orc king's handy work.
"Gotta give it to you... That was pretty @#$^in great."
He sat down as the last orc fell, and the king faded into dust, looking at Shelby with a look on indignant rage.
It was then that his stomach growled, and his eyes widened. "Ohshi- the lunch! I made lunch for us!" He looked into his bag, and then froze in place, moping as he pulled out the remnants of sandwiches, smooshed flat and messy from all of the action.
She pumped a fist in the air wearily, knocking bits of wood off of herself as she struggled into a sitting position. Her health was damn near gone, with just a sliver of it left straggling on. When Saph joined her she just wiggled her fingers at him, too tired to get up while the large orc was busy doing all of the work for them.
"Gotta give it to you... That was pretty @#$^in great."
"Thanks... they usually don't allow you to do that in games with boss characters... I was kinda surprised that even worked!" She laughed, letting her head hang back as she rested. "You were pretty @#%$ing awesome too! I only saw bits and pieces, but... damn!"
As tired as she was, she couldn't deny that she was having a ball. When she'd won the bet and he'd promised to take her on some kind of adventure, she could have only dreamed of something like this! She lifted her head, smiling and rosy cheeked and a little embarrassed. Sure, it was just a game and all.. but it was like actually being in one of her favorite past times with someone she really liked!
"Ohshi- the lunch! I made lunch for us!"
Blinking, she watched curiously as he sifted through the bag and brought out sandwiches... if they could even be called that, anymore. A lovely kind of warmth flooded through her, the kind you get when something is funny, but also so touching and thoughtful that it causes your chest to clench a little. She reached out for one of the smooshed-yet-probably-still-edible sammiches.
"Still looks edible to me!" While her stomach may not have been quite as vocal about how empty it was, she was certainly just as hungry. She eyeballed the article of food for a moment. IT wasn't like the other he had in his grip, this one was plain in comparison. Most would call it boring... she thought it was sweet. It looked like he'd taken her current restricted eating habits into consideration when he'd been making them. She blushed a little harder and flopped over on his shoulder as she unwrapped her smooshed sandwich.
They leveled up. They ate smooshed sammiches. She called him hun. He blushed.
They got their loot, and backtracked out of there. By the time they got out of the dungeon again it was night. Immediately, it caught his attention that the night sky was a deep red hue, and a giant red orb was staring down at them, a great moon descending upon the planet, a terrible grin torn into it's face, pockmarked with deep craters.
"Holy... Sh#@."
He looked over to the goblin next to him. He'd been feeling pretty confident after that last fight, but now, as a golden stairway started to weave its way up before them, he couldn't help but ask.
Before they had left she'd stolen some of the dead orc's armor. As soon as she had equipped it she found that the armor system of the game apparently auto transfigured clothing and styles for females, considering that it looked completely different on her. She wriggled in the tiny waist cloth and stiff bra armor as they traversed back though the cave system with a horde of treasure in tow. Once outside though... it was apparent that things had changed.
"Holy... Sh#@."
... "Ditto." There was a massive demonic.. moon.. of some sort grinning down at them. Shelby felt tiny in comparison. As a stairway rose from below to meet it, their path to another boss fight, heck possibly the boss fight, she gulped.
"How the hell are we gonna fight that?"
How indeed. She stared up at it, squinting against the light it produced. There were probably multiple ways that this could go.. and considering it's size none of them were pleasant. She looked her companion up and down, then glanced at herself for a moment. Slowly a grin found it's way onto her lips that could easily match the menacing nature of the moon boss. "Tooth and nail." Mustering up all of the pride she had, she started toward the stairway with determined steps.
--
An hour and a half later she was sitting with her back against a smoldering tree stump in a daze, hair mussed up and soot streaked across her face. There were telltale signs of a great battle all around her.. deep grooves carved into the earth and trees cut neatly in half all around. The grass was on fire in patches, and in a large crater not too far off sat the remnants of the moon boss, cleaved in half and still very much on fire. She'd gained seven levels in just that one battle, used up all of her potions and managed to break her staff to boot. "...We beat 'im... yaaay..." She glanced over to where Saph was supposed to be.
It was one helluva battle. Who knew that moons could have arms? So many arms. Who knew moon arms could have mouths? They all screamed, too. That wasn't even it's final form, either.
".... You're still alive, right?"
"Nope... That last one got me." He was a ghost. Saph lounged next to her, hands behind his head relaxing, and staring up at the now blank sky, credits rolling in the midst of stars. He slowly placed his ghost hand on her shoulder as the simulation fizzled around them, and he hopped up, reaching out to help her up.
"So... How was that for an adventure? I do alright?"
She laughed at him, and pointed too. Albeit a with a lot less energy than he had.
Then the simulation started to de-materialize and soon they were left in the empty danger room again. He was back to being normal Saph, she was back to being normal pink haired Shelby, still in leggings and a sweat shirt. She'd never missed pants so much in her whole life!
When he helped her to her feet she threw her arms around his neck and hung on him, pressing her face into his collar bone. Her response was appropriately muffled. "Did you do alright?"
She looked up at him, grinning from ear to ear. "I think this idea you came up with blew all previous adventures I have ever had right out of the water. You made them cry, actually. They have very fragile feelings." She pressed a kiss on him clinging a little harder and resisted the urge to climb on and cling like a koala. He was strong enough she could get away with it.
"I loved it." She dropped down a moment later, grabbing his hand and ignoring the magic-mystery bag that was still sitting innocently by. "Let's go! I've got another kind of adventure to take you on!" Grinning, she led him from the room with haste.
Saph's pride puffed up three sizes that day. He did good. All of this went off without a hitch, and what's more, it felt natural. These were the kinda things he liked doing for fun, albeit for different reasons, maybe, but she'd enjoyed it, and he'd been... him.
That was a nice feeling. She clung to him, he held her, and responded to her kiss in kind; before he knew it she was pulling him off to another adventure. He had a feeling this one might not leave the bedroom.
With a goofy smile on his face, he allowed himself to be led away.
[end!]
He'd arrived at the danger room early, and had decided to do a little limit testing while he waited. Shelby had mentioned she had something special planned today, so he'd woken up early, something he often did when he was excited about something, and couldn't wait to get ready and head out.
So, for now, he was having large weights shot at him, and then batting them back with some effort. He swore his max capacity was going up pretty steadily. That, or he was just more willing to push himself closer to what ever his limit was.
He took a deep breath, and signaled a heavier weight to be flung his way. It appeared across the room, rocketing toward him. He stopped it with an outstretched arm.
"YAH!"
Quickly he sent his left palm up at it, and sent it spinning off to the side, where it landed with a loud bang.
She'd been in the observation room for quite a few minutes, simply watching him doing whatever it was he was doing with a goofy smile on her face. Was this his version of working out? It was just so... x-men. She laughed to herself for a moment as he batted away the latest weight-thing, before she reached over to press on com button down. "Hope you didn't work up too much of a sweat in there."
She went about setting up the program she'd gotten for their latest date, fiddling with the controls for a moment before she got it right. Within the room around him spawned a very elaborate structure.... all gold and black in color schemes. A giant dance hall, complete with large, red velvet curtains, golden statues and fixtures, and old Victorian style paintings on the walls. People populated the area quickly... Men in black and white tuxes with generic white or black masks covering their faces, and women in very decorative corset gowns, with half masks of various shades. There were a handful of other characters dressed slightly different, or with different masks on.
Saph would also quickly find himself in a suit, although his was a bit more varied than the other males around him. More buttons, a little bit of gold flare. He was meant to stand out. A half mask would appear in his hand; black with gold embellishment. Shelby joined him a moment later, after watching everything populate. It was pretty spectacular on the screen.... she was excited to see it in person!
Like Saph, she was dressed appropriately yet a little different. Meant to stand apart from the rest of the crowd. Her dress stood out among the rest, as well as her mask. The corset gave her a moments pause, considering she'd never worn one before. It was so tight! How was she supposed to breath?! "Oh god... this was a mistake." Taking a deep breath, she waved at him and meandered over, careful not to trip herself seeing as heels had suddenly appeared on her feet. An over sight, really.... she was still getting used to how exactly this whole thing worked. It was weird that the room could just slap clothes and makeup on you without you really feeling it.
They had appeared in the middle of a dance, seeing as couples were twirling around them.. but the instrumental music from a live band in one corner of the room died down as she made it to his side. There was a break in between dances, so they wouldn't have to worry about it for a while. Or, well, ever... considering what she had planned.
"Lookin good, hun." She leaned in to give him a peck on the cheek. "Can you guess what i've got planned for this date?" She grinned and settled her hands on her hips.
"Hope you didn't work up too much of a sweat in there."
Saph looked up, smiling a bit. "You early, or has it been longer than I thought?" He looked to his watch. The Latter was true. They were even a little late, now. He shrugged, figuring she'd just been watching him or something. She did that sometimes.
"What kinda adventure you got planned for u-"The environment populated around them, and Saph felt immediately uneasy. A nervous eye darted about as he took the scene in. A bunch of people in fancy clothes were trotting about... Dancing. A look of discomfort appeared on his face as he watched the masquerade ball about him. His clothes changed, and he looked down at them, tilting his shoes a bit to get a better look at them.
Oh god, he was dressed even fancier. Was he supposed to be some sorta prince? Was she going full on Disney mode on him? He couldn't dance! He didn't know how, and he didn't WANT to know how!
She appeared, and his eyes darted up and down her. Well, maybe it wasn't terrible, but he wasn't sure how this was going to be an enjoyable date at this point. He wasn't all that into history, he didn't dance, and high class society was clearly not his setting of choice.
"Lookin good, hun. Can you guess what i've got planned for this date?"
"Thanks... Uh... Dancing, I guess." He accepted the kiss on the cheek, obviously not too jazzed about the whole thing. He scanned the crowd. Some people stuck out, but he didn't make much of it. Potential dance partners for the program, maybe.
She chuckled at him, fiddling with her mask. "Nope! No dancing. Can't stand the stuff." A couple walked past and she watched then curiously. The male was in one of the plain outfits, but the female was dressed up pretty elaborately. She heard the woman giggle as she passed.
"Most of this is just the setting. Don't worry about it a whole lot."
A vigorous round of clapping started up and all eyes were drawn to two figures at the top of the grand staircase. A very princely man and a very princess-y woman were at the very top, waving gently at the people gathered below. The woman looked incredibly bored, even going so far as to yawn widely. The man had a wide, charming smile stretched on his lips.
"Introducing, Prince Alexander and Princess Wilhelmina!" More clapping followed, as well as a murmur through the crowd. The newly named Price Alexander stepped forward to address those gathered himself. "Thank you, all of you... for being here tonight to celebrate the joining of my sister, Wilhelmina, with our very own Duke Hubert of Wellinham."
Another man stepped forward to join them, stopping by the princesses side. She didn't look at all enthused by it. Shelby elbowed Saph in the side, pointing off to the left at a very angry looking woman who was scowling up at the scene. Of course, Saph still had no idea what was going on... and she was't inclined to inform him until the action started. She rather liked being the other one in on the loop. Up above the prince continued.
"Let us enjoy this night of merriment and dancing, and raise our glasses to the bright future of my sister and her betrothed!"
Everyone cheered, and those with glasses raised them. Moments later the group started to spread out, some heading back toward the dance floor and casual music started to play, while others meandered over to the banquette of food and drink.
Shelby glanced about, twirling a pink curl of hair around one finger as she waited for things to start. She hardly noticed that there was a person within the crowd who seemed fixated on her, nor that someone else seemed fixated on Saph.
He breathed a sigh of relief when she told them they wouldn't be dancing. "Oh #@$%ing thank you! Scared the crap outa me."
She stated that most of this was setting, which made him tilt his head. He looked around again. A lot of work went into this for it to be a passing scene. Were they going to spend a lot of time in this room? Everyone suddenly looked up in one direction, and his eyes followed.
There was a prince, and a very bored looking princess. This did have a bit of a story to it, didn't it? A wedding? His eyes followed the natural progression of things. The suitor was introduced, the princess was not thrilled, He was nudged, and he followed her finger to an angry looking older woman. His mother, perhaps? Didn't look to be a queen by any regards.
Saph blinked a few times, and turned to Shelby again as everyone dispersed. "What exactly is going on, here? Some kinda... Throne game kinda thing? We gonna be taking over a kingdom or something?"
He paused, catching sight of someone that was lending her an eye something fierce. "Uh... Don't look now, but I think the entertainment has a crush on you..." The stink eye was deployed, at maximum power.
"What exactly is going on, here? Some kinda... Throne game kinda thing? We gonna be taking over a kingdom or something?"
Grinning devilishly, she took his mask from him and attempted to settle it on his face. "I can't tell you~" She sing-songed, unwilling to divulge any spoilers. "I really hope you like it though... I know it's kinda boring right now, but it's just getting started."
"Uh... Don't look now, but I think the entertainment has a crush on you..."
"Huh?" Blinking, she turned to try and see what he was pointing at. Unfortunately the stink eye had worked and when she turned the jester had vanished into the crowd. Shelby was puzzled, but when she turned back to question him on it a small group of people hustled past, cutting between her and Saph. In that moment the woman who had been watching the x-man like a hawk appeared before him with a gentle smile on her lips. "Good evening..." She held a hand out, palm down for him to grasp and kiss, as was custom. "I don't believe I've ever had the pleasure of meeting you before. I am Baroness Petunia Lovegood.... and you are...?" The woman was calm and well composed, smiling up at him with a twinkle in her eye.
Meanwhile, on Shelby's end she stumbled slightly from the sudden socialite stampede, before righting herself. The heels were a little taller than she was used to, so it felt like her balance was off. "How rude!"
She turned to head back to Saph, but came face to face with a person in a jester mask. They were sanding in her way, too, fully blocking her view of her date. Without a word the person silently held out a hand toward her, a wordless request for a dance from her. She laughed at him and lifted a hand to wave the request off. "Oh, I don't think so--Ahh!"
The Jester had snatched up her hand quicker than she could react, and an arm was slipped around her waist. With a well practiced twirl she was whisked off into the small throng of dancing people. Apparently the npc's were not the type to take being turned down lightly!
Creepily enough the Jester didn't speak a word to her as he led their dance, dragging her along as she stumbled awkwardly through the steps. She craned her neck to try and see where Saph was, but only managed to make herself dizzy. Then, suddenly, there was a voice next to her ear.
"Oh, Beauty... Meet me on the veranda at midnight... I shall await thee there."
The music warbled to an end, and then suddenly he was gone. She blinked, thoroughly confused.
They were suddenly pulled apart, and Saph wasn't happy about it. He tried to fight the crowd, but it quickly became apparent that the game was going to separate them, that was just how it was. They wouldn't let him get any closer if he tried.
He gave up after a moment, trying to at least keep her in sight. She disappeared quickly, though, and a woman saddled up to him, introducing herself. He kept an alert air, looking about before deciding to play along. These were clearly NPC's with limited options when it came to interaction. Were they even that important? Maybe as information sources.
He grabbed the hand, and leaned in to give it a peck, standing tall to introduce himself. "Eh... Pleasure's mine. Lord Russel, they call me." His eyes caught Shelby across the room, dancing with that damned jester! "Madam, do you know who that is?" He pointed to the Jester. She turned to look as he bade his farewells.
He'd have to punch that guy.
He suddenly felt the need to take another look around at the notable people in the area. Something was going on here... Why separate them? He looked to Shelby again, wanting to go to her. He had a feeling something would get in the way, though. Maybe he could get some more info from the baroness.
"So... The princess didn't exactly look too excited about things, if you don't mind me talking frankly. What's up with that?
"Eh... Pleasure's mine. Lord Russel, they call me. Madam, do you know who that is?"
Petunia lifted a fan to her lips, half turned to look where he was pointing. She caught sight of the Jester in question and lifted a fan to her lips with a frown. "I can't say that I do... which is unusual. I generally am quite good with knowing who is, and is not at a party." She turned back, clearly already past the strangeness as she waited for him to finish speaking.
"So... The princess didn't exactly look too excited about things, if you don't mind me talking frankly. What's up with that?"
A dour look crossed her face as the woman sighed. "Oh, the poor dear. Have you not heard? She is not as enthused about her engagement as the rest of us." Petunia turned to look for the princess, who had come down the stairs with her soon-to-be husband for a reluctant first dance. "So young, and full of so many dreams. She has barely blossomed into womanhood and has yet to realize what an important union is is for her family." The Baroness pulled a smile again, gently touching his arm with her fingers. "But, let us not dwell on such negative thoughts. It is a party, after all! Would you perhaps be inclined to escort me to the punch, Lord Russel?" Petunia waited, clearly geared for him to make the first move. Her entire character was mousy and kind.
Not long after that another person joined them, and surprisingly it was the princess herself. She saddled right on in with the two of them (having ditched her betrothed on the dance floor) and beamed up at Saph with a regal, snobby air about her. She addressed the Baroness first, with a small kiss on both cheeks. "Petunia! How are you dove?" Then she turned her attention to Saph, with a faint dusting of a blush on her cheeks. "Are you are Lord Russel, I presume? I have heard much of you from my brother! Is it true that you helped to solve that nasty murder case a year ago? The one with the farmhand and all of the sheep?"
--
Shelby had barely taken a few steps out of the dancing circle before her hand was snatched again. She turned in surprise, only to come face to face with a tall, dark haired man with a ruby mask on. "Madam... might I beg a dance from you?"
She whined quietly in the back of her throat, but complied anyway. Clearly both of the people who had approached her so far were important to the story. She might as well start to dig into the story where she could. "Um... yes, certainly." Once more and just as reluctantly she was led onto the floor... but thankfully the new guy wasn't nearly as demanding of a dance partner.
"May I ask your name, Madam?" The mystery male asked, keeping one hand lightly at her hip as he took the lead. So far he was much more of a gentleman. "Shelby... and you are?"
He smiled, which was the only visible part of his face. She could see kind brown eyes behind the mask. "Sir Horace Dettinton, Madam Shelby. A pleasure to meet you." He swept his dark eyes across the room, toward where her date was currently talking to the Baroness and the Princess. "I have not seen you at one of the royal parties before... Is the rumor that you are here for inspiration for your newest play true?" Shelby was quick to nod, simply going along with whatever backstory he provided.
Shelby decided to switch subjects when she caught sight of the grumpy looking woman again, who had managed to snag a dance with the Duke. "Sir Horace...?" She started, glancing at him. "That woman over there, dancing with the Duke? Who is she? I am afraid that I am not yet well versed with faces, as this is my first party." He smiled down at her before glancing away. "Oh... The Dutchess of Hamburg?" His smile dropped a little as he looked at her. The older woman was glowing while she was dancing with the duke. She looked nothing at all like the grumpy old woman Shelby had spotted before. "A sad story, that one... The Duchess lost her husband a few years ago, and the Duke was a close family friend. I have hear rumors that she is in love with him, but too frightened to tell him. With his impending engagement to the princess, i'm afraid there isn't much hope for her."
Shelby hummed quietly to herself, watching the Duke and Duchess as the dance ended The parted, the duke splitting off to try and track down his future wife, while the older woman watched him go. There was a frightening expression on her face... something of a mix between loathing and sadness. Shelby looked back up to her dancing partner, stepping back and dipped a little curtsy at him. "Thank you for the dance, Sir Horace... it has been very charming talking with you." He bowed and she said her goodbyes, skirting back to Saph as the crowd finally dispersed.
A brief intermission quickly settled over the room as some people left and a few others entered. Shelby found her date, struggling with the length of her dress as she hurried back to him. "Yeesh!" She stopped at his side, "I got tricked into a bunch of dances... if you can even call them that... but I did find some stuff out!" She opened her mouth to continue on, when a scream ripped through the hall.
"The Duke! The Duke is dead! Someone killed him!" One of the generic npc's came barreling into the room. A hush settled over the crowd with a few gasps mixed in. The prince rushed to the top of the stairs, "Lock down the palace! No one leaves or enters until we find the murderer!"
Shelby grinned and leaned in a little bit, tugging at Saph's sleeve. "I can tell you now.... Its a Murder Mystery Game!"
