The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

Serena smiled at the brunette happily. It was cool that she was the type to go out of her way to offer to do something social with Serena; she often found like she was the one who always had to do the offering. That feeling well and truly sucked. "Fantastic." she responded and motioned towards the exit. She wondered which cafe the two of them should hit up. Starbucks was the obvious one that most people went to, but she generally found them to be pretty overrated.
Serena pulled her bag over her shoulder and followed the other woman's lead. She was totally okay with finding a new place, she hadn't really been to many around here, and if this woman knew of a nice one that they could relax and chat at, that was definitely a bonus.
The blonde stretched her arms out a little as they walked, limbering them up a bit as they felt stiff. Maybe it was having sat relatively still when she had the needle in her arm. "No no, I'm fine with trying wherever. It's nice to have somebody else suggest something to do for once to be perfectly honest, I've sort of gotten used to organising everything when it comes to my friends."
Juliette smiled a little at the other woman's willingness. It wasn't often that she met people with the same mindset as hers, and it was even less often that she met people that didn't think it was weird of her to invite someone for coffee only moments after meeting them.
She hadn't organized something with friends for a while. It just never seemed to work out, especially being in a different city from most of her college friends. Then, the people that she met at work were always just as busy as she was, so that was a no go. Most of her interactions with people of late seemed to be purely by chance.
"Awesome, the place just over here is kind of quirky and makes excellent coffee. Not to mention the smoothies," Juliette grinned. The smoothies were made with fresh fruit and juice, and had grown a bit of a reputation over the years.
She started walking towards the door as she talked, expecting that Serena would do the same.
Smiles were a funny thing indeed. They were infecious. Serena was known for smiling a lot anyway, but when people that she thought seemed nice did, she was inclinced to respond with a smile of her own, and so she did. Juliette seemed to be fairly friendly overall and Serena found herself looking forwards to getting to know her over the course of a cup of coffee.
The small part of her mind that took note of such things and occasionally prodded her to act on them commented on her being pretty. Serena shuffled this thought into a quiet corner and nodded, letting the brunette lead the way to the would be coffee shop.
"Define kind of quirky? Because quirky and coffee shops seem to so often go together." She responded with a sly grin. "Not to say that's a bad thing though! And smoothies are lovely too." She really needed to get a blender or something and start making those at home. That would probably be better for her health overall. Though she was in a pretty good place overall, so she was in no rush.
She glanced around as the left the building, shielding her eyes lightly from the sudden burst of bright sunlight. She rooted around in her handbag and produced a pair of sunglasses that helped stave off the sudden blinding.
"I guess that's true," Juliette nodded with a little head bob. Coffee shops tended to all try to be unique in certain aspects. They all wanted to be the real life Central Perk. "I suppose it's just your average coffee shop, then. It's got an nineteenth century theme, but mostly just in decor."
She stepped outside, closing her eyes slightly to appreciate how nice the day was. The sun was very intense, even more so than usual, and she almost hated to have to go inside and sit under lamps. It seemed like such a waste.
Serena had pulled out a pair of sunglasses in response to the sudden bright sunlight. She didn't blame her, if she had to worry about sunlight affecting her, she probably would have done the same, but she had never had that problem. As soon as the light hit her skin she started to absorb it, so it never seemed as intense for her.
She walked a little down the sidewalk. It really was only about three doors down. It was a big, old building, and it looked very out of place from its surroundings. The old style architecture fit the theme beautifully, especially with the name Cafe 1842 printed in small letters just above the door. If you weren't looking for it, it was an easy place to miss.
Serena chuckled as the other girl spoke, she had a nice mental image of that place. She had been to quite a few little café's in her time, from places that were like Gothic dungeons or places themed on different art movements. She grinned. "Ooooh, that sounds interesting. I can't wait to see it." She could honestly really do with a good cup of coffee round about now.
Serena wasn't really a day person most of the time, she did most of her work and university stuff in the evening, given that it tended to one of the quieter times of day. She admitted to herself that those might not be the best hours to do socialising, and may have had something to do with her lack there of, but she got excellent grades, and she'd not even skirted a deadline on edits yet.
She smiled at the building from the outside and turned to the other girl. "Well it certainly looks nice." She pondered how she should go on with the conversation. "So, Juliette, what do you do for a living?" She asked in a friendly tone.
"I'm a nurse," Juliette replied as she pushed the door to the cafe open and stepped inside. She held it open so that Serena could step in after. "And you?"
The cafe was moderately busy in the middle of the day. Many of the circular tables were full, but there were a few that were unoccupied.
The decor was, as Juliette had said, reminiscent of the nineteenth century. There were little hints to things, such as a very old style cash register and a decorated ceiling. Save for the very bored looking barista in a modern apron, the whole place could have very well been a photograph.
Juliette stepped forward slightly once she was sure that Serena was inside and stepped closer to the line at the register, craving coffee more and more as she thought about it.
Serena's lips erupted into a wide smile at the other girl as she responded. That was an answer that she had definitely not come to expect from people she had just met, however it was one that she was always thrilled to hear. There always needed to be more people in the medical profession as far as she was concerned, and she was always glad when she met one. "That's awesome." She beamed.
Serena nodded at her in thanks as she walked through the door and held it gently as she went past so it was easier for Juliette to get through as well. "Oh me?" She thought for a moment, she was never quite sure what answer to give these days. "I'm a student, and I guess you could call me a part time-writer." She responded with a smile.
Serena should start looking for summer work to save up more money, however she was kind of enjoying all of the time she was able to spend doing nice things like volunteering at the mansion at the moment, or being able to get up earlier in the morning and come in to donate blood. She felt like a 9-5 job or anything of the like would possibly constrict that a little bit.
Serena felt the inside of her mouth water a little at the prospect of some freshly brewed coffee, she turned again to the other girl with a friendly tone. "It must be quite hectic, working nurses hours. It's awesome that you find the time to come and donate blood as well." She complimented, in some admiration.
"Thanks," Juliette gave Serena a small smile. It was usually a common response when she told people that she was a nurse. That and 'hey can you take a look at this rash for me?'. She liked Serena's choice much better.
"Oh me? I'm a student, and I guess you could call me a part time-writer."
"Oh?" Juliette said, intrigued by Serena's response. "What do you study, and if you don't mind me asking, what do you tend to write?" It wasn't often that she met writers. Well, ones that weren't helicopter moms writing blogs.
"It must be quite hectic, working nurses hours. It's awesome that you find the time to come and donate blood as well."
"You get used to it after a while," she shrugged simply. She didn't add that she had cut back her shifts to volunteer more, or that she was considering quitting entirely to make time for joining the X-men. That seemed like a lot to dump on someone she had just met, and she didn't even know Serena's stance on mutants, so she didn't want to push her luck. "But, I mean I tell patients all the time how important it is to donate, so it would be hypocritical of me not to do the same. So, I try to make time for it when I can."
Juliette had reached the front of the line, so she turned away briefly to order a peach and pineapple smoothie from the barista. Coffee sounded good as well, but there weren't that many places that she knew of that made smoothies that good. She could get coffee anywhere.
People that smiled at others a lot were some of the best people you could get to know. Of course, bias came into this as the blonde shared this trait herself, if that wasn't immediately obvious from the way that her interaction with the brunette nurse had been going thus far.
It was always nice, and somewhat refreshing when a person took an interest in what Serena did. "Well..." She began, figuring she'd start with the education segment of things. "To simplify, I'm a Biology major, specialising in genetics, however I do tend to pick up a lot of extra classes and stuff here and there. I just finished a course on creative writing." It had been interesting, not terribly challenging for her, but interesting.
Lips tilted into a smirk. "As for the writing, it's most all fiction. Short stories here and there, some novella stuff. It's my passion." She responded, the smirk now turned into a softer smile. She didn't mention that she was also a published Author. There wasn't any particular reason for this, other than her not wanting to come off to a new person as any kind of pretentious.
She listened to Juliette as the woman informed Serena of her work. She was intrigued, she didn't know if she'd actually met a nurse before. Plenty of Doctors and others in similar kind of fields. "That's true, I suppose." Serena walked over to the counter a little behind the other woman, ordered a two shot, caramel iced latté and then found a booth with her and sat across from her, giving the woman a very genuine, heart felt full faced smile.
Juliette followed Serena to a quiet little booth and sat down across from her, returning her large smile. She was glad she had taken the initiative to talk to Serena, since it had really paid off. It was rare that she met someone that was that easy to talk to.
>>"To simplify, I'm a Biology major, specialising in genetics, however I do tend to pick up a lot of extra classes and stuff here and there. I just finished a course on creative writing."
"Genetics," she repeated, "that's awesome. It's a really interesting area. What drew you to it, originally?" That was always a good question. Everyone had a different story about how they found their passion in life.
>>"As for the writing, it's most all fiction. Short stories here and there, some novella stuff. It's my passion."
Juliette nodded as she spoke. It sounded like something that she really believed in. Of course, it was difficult to make a life out of just writing, so most people had degrees in other things and chose to write on the side. "Have you ever written something I would know?" She asked curiously.
A waitress stopped by their table and set down their drinks, smiling at both of them. Juliette grabbed her smoothie and took a sip. It was just as good, if not better, than she remembered.
Serena smiled and took a few little sips of her drink from the booth that the two of them settled down in. This was quite a nice place all in all, she'd have to memorise where it was so she could bring other friends in here for a chat, or if it was quiet enough in the early morning she could come in here and do some of her writing instead of doing it in her apartment.
"Well, a combination of things really. Inspirational teachers at school, my grades, and I suppose an interest grew from my mutation." She commented thoughtlessly. Serena tended these days to treat powers as just a throw away factor of a person. As far as she was concerned they were of as much consequence as a person's sexuality or gender, the other parts of a person's personality were far more interesting.
A little colour flooded into Serena's cheeks, not very much but enough that it was certainly noticeable. She smiled slightly bashfully at the other girl. "Uhm- I suppose that depends on how much and what Genre's you read." She replied.
Juliette's eyebrows raised with interest. Her mutation. It wasn't as if Serena being a mutant necessarily made her like her more, but it definitely didn't make her like her any less. It was always a comfort to know that you weren't alone in something, and that there wouldn't be any judgement about such a natural part of her life. "What's your mutation, exactly?" She asked it with a smile so that Serena would hopefully get the idea that she was asking out of curiosity rather than disgust. That was the last thing she wanted to convey.
She took another sip of coffee while she thought about books that she like to read. It was difficult to say she liked one genre over another, but there were definitely some she tended to favour more than others. "I read a bit of everything, but I think the ones I probably read most would be general fiction and fantasy."
