The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

It was seven in the morning, and Ambrose was, irritatingly, one of those morning people who sprung out of bed looking refreshed as ever. He'd gotten up this morning at precisely five forty-five, and immediately showered, done by six. Then he changed, slipping one of maybe twenty nearly identical suits, checking his collar, tightening his tie. Then down the hallway - past the rooms, long since empty, until he reached his childhood bedroom at the end of the hall. Stepping through the doorway, he'd distastefully circumvented the pulverized chandelier to walk to the dresser - the only intact object in the whole room, even if its surface was still marred with scratches - and opened the middle drawer, taking out the small bottle of black pills. He'd shaken two into his hand, and, as he did every other morning, went downstairs at six ten and poured himself a glass of water before swallowing them both. And then an apple, red as blood, seized right before leaving, as Ambrose limped out, putting a good part of his weight on the ebony, ironically dragon-headed cane he held, heading towards the front door. Outside, his chauffeur was waiting in a sleek black limousine, in which he'd be driven to the city. From there, he'd be dropped off at the small coffee shop not ten minutes away from Jaager Worldwide headquarters at six forty-five, where he currently was, eating breakfast before going in to work.
And now it was seven, and he had finished his coffee and his croissant, and was sitting quietly in an armchair with his laptop on his lap, browsing his email and answering them in the hour he had before the next board meeting. He could see somebody, out of the corner of his eye, staring pointedly at his back, where the suit had neat splits in the cloth for his wings to reach out, and the places where his back spikes protruded from the skin were clearly visible beneath the cloth. PR was responsible for his wardrobe revamp - they'd told him that he had to own his current status as a mutant icon, and if he had to do that by flaunting his status as a mutant, so be it.
Somebody else moved, and seemed to move closer to Ambrose. In fact, the person halted mere feet away from Ambrose's position.
"May I help you?" Ambrose asked politely, not looking up from his computer. While he had better things to do than discuss things with random strangers, he wasn't going to shoo them off. PR would hate him for that.
Aura's jetblack hair fell behind her in a thick, curly well kept style that kept the mid back length hair behind her, mostly. She had on a silk pink blouse with a pair of dark pants as well as heels. SHe was even wearing make up and had soft blue claws the stylist had called acrylics. She looked the business part and really Aura was just avoiding attention if she could and her normal appearance attracted attention, usually screaming attention.
In the past Aura would have likely killed every non-mutant in the room and talked to Ambrose after. It would have been fun, a quick work out before business. The old Aura had a problem though. she had only known how to follow orders blindly. True and luckily those orders had always been with their people best interest at heart, even if Aura disagreed with them. The old Aura would have found an army and lead an open war on humanity, and she and anyone who had followed her would be dead. She had grown considerably thanks to Roach.
"You have a beautiful gift she said admiring the wing's and spikes she could easily see. She could not help but smile she had always been jealous of the visible mutants despite her power revealing her with any use. "It is my hope you can, our people must stand united after all and we are among our peoples most well known she said which she knew was true for herself and pictures of AMbrose had been all over the Internet.
Aura did not wait invitation and simply sat down at the table, or started to until she saw someone staring at Ambrose back. "If you don't stop staring at this nice man, I'll be forced to turn you into ground beef and then make sure it is sold to whatever family you have" she said keeping the friendly smile of her glossed lips. The man chose to stop staring immediately and decided drinking his coffee else wear was a good idea. "Sorry, about that but i do not wish to waste your time. I am Aura, and their are thing's I wish to discuss" she said slipping into the chair fully.
"You have a beautiful gift, the newcomer said, and that caught Ambrose's attention. He glanced up to see a woman dressed rather impeccably, looking every bit the businesswoman. She seemed somewhat familiar - it was a moment before it clicked that this was a mutant who the authorities very much disliked, and by extension, who Ambrose was very much fond of. He didn't remember much else about her, though he suspected that she would go ahead and tell him in the time to come.
"It is my hope you can, our people must stand united after all and we are among our peoples most well known," she said, and that confirmed it. She was the mutant known for mindless destruction, as far as Ambrose could recall. He preferred a bit more subtlety than she did (all the photos of him that were publicly available showed him in the most flattering way possible, as PR was very, very invested in his public appearance, unlike this woman), but he did suspect that they shared similar ideals.
She started to sit down, but before she could, she seemed to notice the very person who had been pointedly staring at the foreign additions on Ambrose's back. Standing back up, she strode over to the man, saying rather pleasantly, "If you don't stop staring at this nice man, I'll be forced to turn you into ground beef and then make sure it is sold to whatever family you have." Well, at least she wasn't slaughtering everyone. The man even got up and left, deciding that the environment was not improving his morning, and he had to give her kudos for that.
Returning to the table, she sat down, to Ambrose's slight annoyance - but his curiosity was piqued, and that was enough for him to not lash out at her. Even so, his fingers were tapping out a near-silent beat on the armrest of the chair he sat in, and the greenish-black veins were starting to become visible beneath translucent skin. "Sorry, about that but i do not wish to waste your time. I am Aura, and their are thing's I wish to discuss."
He looked at her carefully, trying to judge her motivations. If he was caught in public with a known mutant terrorist figure, PR would be rather upset. But her intentions, from what he knew about her, lined up quite well with his underlying agenda.
"How would you feel about 'getting rehabilitated' by Jaager Worldwide?" Ambrose asked, closing his computer and tucking it into the bag beside his chair. He folded his hands in his lap and smiled at her, but there was no emotion behind it - anybody who had seen their fair share of monsters would have been able to recognize the emptiness behind the mask. "You understand, of course. PR." And he lowered his voice almost conspiratorially, leaning in a bit, and saying, "Can't be seen with possibly the most infamous mutant terrorist in public." He straightened up again, empty smile plastered back on, and said, "It'd be good press for you and me both. And that way, I could postpone the board meeting I have in -" and he glanced at his watch - "fifty-five minutes, and we could go somewhere a bit more private." The smile slid off of his face, and, ice-blue eyes staring Aura down dully, no feelings behind them, he said, "I'm sure we have quite a bit you'd want to discuss."
"Would depends on what that rehabilitation mean's. Let's face it, i am a bit past being a juvenile delinquent...i think. I have no idea my age you see" she said and she knew what he meant by PR. It was something she had never cared much about though Roach and Lori had tried to teach her. She had only been able to see the blade in front of her. She was curious as to his word's and she was not sure any amount of rehabilitation would work in this case but she could see where the river flowed she felt. She was pretty sure she would always be a criminal by human standards.
"Private is better, after all the property damage i have caused is prolbely higher then your net worth" she said with a bit of a giggle and agreed mostly to give him what he wanted. He rown reputation was pretty tarnished, Murder, Mass murder, vehicular homicide, drowning and so much more. The man before her was powerful in terms of business and Aura though she had resisted them at the time was starting to Take Lori and Roach's advice to heart.
"I believe we can assist each other to great effect yes" she said with a smile almost as fake as Ambrose's but Aura's was likely easier to read. Not for the first time she considered it might have been better to have arrived at his house and simply waited from him to get home. "We can meet anywhere you like, however i request that we meet alone or with a few guards if your more comfortable with that" she went on not entirely sure where Ambrose's idea was going.
Ambrose smiled and nodded politely as Aura responded. She seemed less... crude, really, than she was known for. Maybe she'd changed, but Ambrose wasn't acquainted with her well enough to make entirely accurate judgements. But she'd specifically searched him out, gone the extra mile to dress up in a way that he would find more tolerable, and seemed to know what she was doing, so he would humor her for now. If she turned out to merely be a grunt in the bigger picture, than he could afford to toss her away like a piece of trash, but if she turned out to be useful, he would be glad that he didn't.
"One moment," he said politely, and tugged out his phone. He shot off a quick text to his personal assistant - found the Aura, contact PR to get a spin on JW trying to rehabilitate her, and definitely postpone meeting - before returning it to his pocket and smiling at Aura again. "If you would prefer privacy, why don't you come with me?" he asked, gesturing at the door. "JW headquarters are merely a block away. I understand you may not be comfortable with the amount of guards present, but I assure you, until we develop a working mutant cure, they're no match for you."
He smiled again and stood up, hefting his bag over his shoulder, before walking to the door. He almost knew that she would follow him, knowing that he had the resources and the ideals that she wanted, and so strode confidently to the door, holding it open for her to follow through. "Shall we?"
"If recognized i will attract attention you and I do not want" she said continuing her smile. If that happened their would be screaming and murder and walls would likely be far more red. The people likely mostly humans were average morons and their deaths would effect little.
Aura visibly shuddered and a clear look of disgust crossed her face at the mention Mutant cure. "I had considered meeting you in your building, but security is good and i figured you might get upset having to hire a lot of new ones" she said casually but softly as she stood up. Taking the guards was not a question in her mind, but time and effort and the result would have been worse.
With a bow of her head she walked threw the door he held open. "As for my comfort....I was raised to charge machine gun nests and hunt my own food" she said which was a bit of an exaggeration but not to much of one. She truly smiled at the thought of the battlefield and combat. It was so simple and beautiful.
[OOC: GMed us to the JW building. If you'd like me to change that, just let me know and I'll edit.]
"If recognized i will attract attention you and I do not want," Aura said. So, privacy then. Then why didn't she confront him when he had arrived at the HQ building, out of sight of prying eyes? "I had considered meeting you in your building, but security is good and i figured you might get upset having to hire a lot of new ones." Well, that explained it. He wasn't sure if this was some passive-aggressive attempt to subtly acknowledge her skill set (which he was well-acquainted with already, thank you very much), or she was just stating the truth. To be honest, Ambrose suspected both. "As for my comfort....I was raised to charge machine gun nests and hunt my own food." Well, wasn't that lovely.
"How thoughtful of you," Ambrose murmured, referring to Aura's comments on his security force and not minding her own comfort. "That makes the situation quite simplistic, then; off to JW headquarters we go." He let go of the door, and it shut behind them as he started to walk off.
They stepped in through the revolving glass doors of the tall building that housed the main body of Jaager Worldwide not ten minutes later, and Ambrose walked authoritatively off to the main desk, where a secretary was typing away at the computer. She glanced up as he neared, smiling once she recognized him.
"Mr. Jaager!" she said. "What can I do for you today?"
"I'd like a guest badge for my acquaintance here, Miss Marian," he replied just as amiably. "We're going to be using the thirty-sixth floor's main conference room for the next hour or so."
She nodded and inputted something into her computer, and within seconds, a badge was printed, which she promptly punched a hole in. With that, she ran her fingers over the rectangle of paper, and it almost immediately hardened into engraved metal, revealing her status as a mutant as well. Attaching the card to a lanyard, she handed it to Ambrose, smiling and saying, "All set, Mr. Jaager."
He thanked her and turned back to Aura, handing off the badge as he did so. "Follow me," he said, and started to head towards the elevators past the receptionist's desk, where they'd go up to the thirty-sixth floor so they could finally have the discussion Aura was clearly itching to have.
Aura followed the man glancing at the outside of the building enough so she could recall it in the future, not that it was hard to find. The Internet ensured almost anything could;d be found, and legal businesses were easy to locate. She had also found it's location before she met with the man before her. The incide of the building offered Little to Aura's sense of taste, instead her eyes looked around searching more for hiding spaces and other areas that might be useful in a fight. It was a habit that had been beaten into her as well as one that had helped keep her alive.
She watched impressed as the Secretary, whose name she had already forgotten made a piece of paper turn into something that looked a lot like metal. Aura had always been fascinated with the powers of those around her both becuse she thought each was a wondrous gift and because it paid to know what people could do in case they get the dumb idea of being an X-men or helping humanity.
Th elevator ride was uneventful, though Aura never cared much for the things. It always worried her about being in a box that could fall long enough to kill you. Still it was a minor thing and she had already lived far longer then most people would have thought possible.
As they entered the room, Aura glanced around, looking first out the window down at the ground. "So how do you feel about humanity? As well as Human/Mutant relations?" she asked looking back at him. She could have began by explaining her view but she felt that was likely already known. Still the question would frame the rest of the conversation.

"So how do you feel about humanity? As well as Human Mutant relations?" Ambrose shrugged ambivalently, his back still to her as he walked over to and sat down in the chair at the head of the table, spinning it around slightly to face her.
"Humans, mutants, they're almost the same to me. Neither is superior but both have the potential to be incredibly stupid, and those are the ones I dislike." A letter opener was sitting on the oak table, and Ambrose picked it up with his left hand, absentmindedly spinning it around and weaving the blade in and out of his fingers as he spoke. "As for human-mutant relations? It's rather petty for us to focus on something as irrelevant as species. Yes, I am a mutant, and yes, my -" and he caught himself before he could say anything incriminating - "form reflects that, and yes, in this state I am superior to many members of the human race. Yet that is not an opinion, that is a fact. Put me against some of the greatest human athletes and I would likely beat them or be evenly matched, and I wouldn't even be trying. It's natural, it's evolution, and the natural progression of things is taking us somewhere where petty things like human-mutant relations will no longer be relevant."
His eyes darkened as he said that, thinking of his plans for the world - big plans, yes, but easily achieved when people looked past their pathetic, worldly lives and at something bigger.
"What about you?" he asked, suddenly pleasant again. "Your stance on the matter seems relatively self-explanatory from your prior actions, but I'd still like to hear it from you."
She let the words wash over her, much of what he said was true enough. Though he took a perhaps alarmingly light attitude to the problem. Both Humans and Mutants could be very stupid, like those at the mansion believing they could work together. "I could make a smiler list, being immune to the common punch is helpful" she started flexing her back slightly before continuing.
"Humans have the power to stand up to evaluation like no one has ever had the power to do. Eventually their will be a flash point, humans and mutants will go to war with each other and when they do it is a matter of time before the humans fire a nuclear weapon or a powerful enough Mutant emerges to do the same. " she said witha sigh. He was right people human and mutant could be very stupid and that stupidity could destroy them all.
"I wish to save our people from that fate. Let them have a future. I don't just speak these words my friend. Not to long ago many in this city had a shared vision of the future. In it most of humanity and mutant kind were destroyed. The rest were dieing or two stuck in fighting each other to do anything worth while. I also wish to prevent anyone else from having as much blood on their hands as i do. While the second is unrealistic, the first must be prevented to preserve our race" she went on not sure how effective or what he might think of her words. Most considered her a psychopath.
"I live for my people, when they are safe i can die happy. Theirs no roal for people like me in a world without war. I only understand fighting really, but mutants like yourself can guide our people after the smoke clears. The war will come but we can tilt the odds in our favor" she finished with a smile. "In the mean time any and all threats to our people must be eliminated" she said deciding not to mention a mutant cure was included on that list. Humanity would just find a way to weaponize it.
"I understand if you don't want blood tied to your hands, but their is no denying the incredible assets we can be to each other" she finished her littile speech. His reply would set the tone for what happened next.
Ambrose nodded along to what Aura was saying - admirable, yes, but slightly misguided. When she spoke about wanting to give her people a future - who were her people, exactly? Homo superior? No mutant was superior to a human just for being born. Ambrose himself had a mutation that had not manifested up until the age of twelve, and up until then, he had been no better than a human. No, the only way to ensure the continued existence of a planet was to destroy everything so it could be reborn again. There were only so many times mistakes could be patched up before the whole structure eventually crumpled from age, and it was about that time.
So she wanted him to lead the mutants, once this inevitable war had ended? Interesting that she wasn't immediately offering herself up for that role. Ambrose didn't see it the way she did, sadly. When the smoke cleared, his vision was of no world, no civilization left to be seen, and that contrasted rather sharply with the idea of a mutant-only world. At least the latter had survivors. And threats? What threats, the human race? She was an extremist, to say the least, and her convoluted way of seeing things was a bit confusing to Ambrose. His thought process was rather straightforward, in his opinion, compared to hers.
She wanted to be partners, it seemed - that sounded like the intention behind her little spiel. Sadly, that wasn't going to happen. She could be an asset to him, yes, but an easily replaced one. And Ambrose suspected her ideas of a perfect world didn't line up with his.
"So you want to wipe out only the humans of the world," he said slowly. "Admirable, but impossible. Extinction is rarely selective like that." He paused to glance up at her, trying to read her facial expressions to gauge her reaction to what he would say next. "I'm afraid we don't quite see eye-to-eye on this. You see, this petty species quarrel is one of the very problems I wish to end. You want to cure a symptom, not the disease, by ending that quarrel with only mutants left standing. I can see past that to the greater good. You see, the disease, like a cancer, has spread too far to be easily cured. The only solution is to destroy the source of the problem, and the only way to do so is complete destruction. Life always follows death, and birth after destruction. There can be no new beginning without first an end. Have you heard the story of Noah's Ark? Keep that in mind. Because that is the future I can see." He paused again, locking eyes with Aura. "Do you understand? The fundamental belief of your cause is survival. The fundamental belief of mine is total darkness, because only then can there be light."
Aura was the product of brainwashing religious cult who had altered her memories, conditioned her to kill without a thought of remorse. To look at humanity as an animal to b e hunted, killed and eaten and killed. To kill freinds simply so they could not be questioned if captured. She had killed thousands, the blood on her hands was an ocean that could never be clean no matter what.
Despite all that, this man was far more of a monster then she could be. To wholesale kill everything? Their was no point, no elegance and it was not something she felt nature would have wanted. If this man acheived even a small piece of what he intended he would certainty be the greater monster.
"I think i would have done you a favor breaking into this place then being polite she said shaking her head then she looked serious. "If that truly is your plan then i would be forced to kill you, so even if your future happened you would never see it" she said coldly looking right back at Ambrose.
"Failing that i could just have your headquarters relocated to the moon. I have friends who can toss the this lovely building into orbit, with you in it. So i would think very carefully about your actions against our people. They will be stopped and you removed if needed" she said to punctuate her point, the aura around her body flickered.
"Your labs looking for a cure will also be shut down if not stopped. Such an attack on mutants can not be tolerated any more then the rest of your foolishness. I should have known anyone in your position would be someone the humans needed to use Your just their excuse to act aganst us"[/volor] she said coldly. Aura was not all happy or impressed and was figurig she might have to gut the lovely mutant before her.

"I think i would have done you a favor breaking into this place then being polite. If that truly is your plan then i would be forced to kill you, so even if your future happened you would never see it”
That was adorable. She really thought he cared. Sacrifices had to be made, in the bigger picture, and if one of those sacrifices was Ambrose’s life, who cared?
"Failing that i could just have your headquarters relocated to the moon. I have friends who can toss the this lovely building into orbit, with you in it. So i would think very carefully about your actions against our people. They will be stopped and you removed if needed. "Your labs looking for a cure will also be shut down if not stopped. Such an attack on mutants can not be tolerated any more then the rest of your foolishness. I should have known anyone in your position would be someone the humans needed to use Your just their excuse to act against us”
Ambrose looked at her, trying to hold back the growing irritation he was feeling. He hated having to deal with people who couldn’t see past their egotistical views (for the “betterment of their species,” they claimed, but really, it was for themselves so they could feel some sort of repentance), and Aura was no different.
So, failing that, he gave a little scoff. And then another. And then he was full-out laughing, because really, she was kind of adorable. He spoke only when he’d calmed.
"You really don’t understand, do you,” he said, almost pityingly. ”You claim that I’m exactly someone the humans can use as an excuse to act against us - and you say ‘us’ as if we, as mutants, are a different species of human, which anybody with basic knowledge of biology and the classification of species would know is false - but have you looked at yourself lately? You and your Order are part of the problem, and you’re so caught up in yourselves that you don’t even realize. Why do you think the full humans hate us? Because they think we’re dangerous, and what have you done to dispel that fear?”
And the fact that she thought she had power. Also rather adorable, really. When would people start realizing that Ragnarok was not just a fad, and that they were serious? And not just that, but that Ragnarok was bigger and stronger and more determined than they ever could have imagined?
”And I love how you really believe that you can cull me like you would a disease,” Ambrose said in amusement, voicing his thoughts. ”You seem to think that it would be easy to take us down. I guarantee you, it would not.”
Ambrose yawned, and mimed suddenly having a revelation. His eyes widened in mock surprise, and he gasped theatrically. ”Wait a second. You Order members were once lead by the esteemed Lori Faust, weren’t you?” He tapped his finger against the table, brow furrowed in overly exaggerated concentration, as he leaned towards Aura. ”Isn’t her company collapsing? Something about secrets that should have been kept secret being leaked, and her workers all leaving?” And now he smiled, and it was genuine, but viciously so. ”You see, I could tear you down with a word. An order from me and your funds would all disappear. I could put you on the top of Interpol’s Most Wanted list if I wanted to. I could put a hit out on you that would be so high that every assassin on the planet would be targeting you. Or closer to home - I could list you on the known sexual offenders list, and see who’s willing to deal with you then. I could destroy you. And when you’re trying to keep yourself afloat, it’s a lot harder to focus on making empty threats towards people who have more power than you ever will, isn’t it?”
”So here’s a deal from me. You and your Order can deal with your petty things all you want, and Ragnarok will leave you alone. Or you could try to stop me, and we could destroy you. Such a hard decision, isn’t it.” He leaned back, wincing in mock pity. ”You’d better make the right choice, Miss Aura. I don’t think you’d like it if you didn’t.”
"We are mutants humans fear us and will always do so. Weather we do anything to them or not. Natural instinct is to fight extinction. You also reveal your ignorance in biology. The x-gene makes us different and humans lack it" she said sounding disappointed which she was. That might be something she could exploit later, as he clearly was not doing the work and likely had scientists to do much of it. Genetically mutants and humans were almost identical except the x-gene which was all it took. "You however give everyone something to fear and fight." she said looking back at him.
Aura smiled as he returned vocal barbs, it was hard not to laugh. "please take the company out, burn it to the ground if you like" she said with a sigh. He was very short sided it was quite sad to her. His threats were probably true she did not know or care. The company was now meaningless anyway, she had no use for it.
"Is that it? I must admit, i seem to have over estimated your intelligence and abilities. I expected more then a simple madman wrapped in his ego. I assure you your threats are as empty as mine" she said honestly believing he could do the things he said. "So your saying you can run your company from orbit? Or without workers, and how many billions will your insurance pay you for repeated damage? Tell me are you out of practice with your threats or do you just not care enough to try? " she said looking a bit board with the situation.
Her disappointment was profound. SHe head expected to find someone useful and intelligent instead she found a simple a madman. One in a position of power to be sure but mad. She would of course take his threats seriously though the only real target he had was sanctuary and if he targeted that, Aura knew the man would have far more issues then he had now.
"Interpol is decent though, they might get lucky. They once got lucky when i was in japan but.....i can you show you his id if you like one day. You can check but i may be on that list " she said now debating on weather or not to let the man in front of her stay alive. He was not giving her much choice in the matter but in the spirit the position she had taken she was trying to give diplomacy a chance. Situations however did not seem to lend her much in that regard.

Wow. Ambrose was really getting pissed now, even if he didn't show it. "You also reveal your ignorance in biology"? Really? She'd clearly never taken high school bio, or earned a degree in biochemical sciences - you know, like Ambrose had. She might as well murder everyone on the planet, then, considering they were all mutants. That's why he didn't particularly like the word "mutant" - technically, everyone on the planet was a mutant. Somebody with green eyes would be considered a mutant by someone with blue eyes, considering one was natural and the other was a mutation of the original gene. He was dealing with someone with even less knowledge about what she was talking about than he'd thought.
That could be good, though. It was always easier to manipulate the ignorant than the well-informed, and she certainly wasn't the latter.
"Well then, I suppose you should disregard me, then," Ambrose said suddenly, shrugging. He wasn't stupid, contrary to what the woman believed - in fact, he was very much the opposite. He was, at the very least, smart enough to know when someone wasn't quite smart enough to carry on a sensible business conversation with. This supposed diplomatic discussion seemed to be spiralling downward very quickly as the two participants opinions' of each other changed drastically, and Ambrose was quite ready for Aura to resort to violence. He stood up, smiling pleasantly, and proceeded to walk towards the door. "I'll walk you down, Miss Whilver. It's the least I can do."
Oh, dear. He hoped she wouldn't be too startled by the use of her real last name. He really hadn't meant to use it, but too late now.
