The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

Nika seemed not sure at first how to react. That told Neena quite a bit, actually.
"I don't know if it would be good or bad. If I do snap people could get hurt and I'll probably end up either in isolation or the graveyard.
I'm doing my best to keep it inside but I don't think I can do it for much longer. Then if I do let it all out the humans are just going to use it as an example to say how bad we really are. I sometimes have nightmares of myself going feral and there's blood everywhere. Not just like splattered here and there. I'm talking about blood flowing like rivers and in my dream I seem to crave bloodshed. I don't know what to do."
"Dreams and nightmares are strange creatures," Neena remarked, quoting her grandfather. "Not to be taken seriously, nor lightly."
She straighted a bit, shifting her head and teeth to her other hand and nail.
"Well, I'm not a great judge at reading people, but to me that shocked reaction tells me you haven't totally lost your innocence. At least, not to my way of thinking. Losing innocence means you're guilty of something. And there's no way you can blame yourself for anything humans do to us. Humans are fearful creatures by nature. They fear anything different, even differences among themselves. Not much we do or don't do can change that, unfortunately."
She sighed, and hugged the girl again.
"As for keeping things in.... You're right. If you keep it in too long, you may snap. Emotions don't take kindly to being bottled."
Having been on the recieving end of Nika's adrenaline-boosted attacks, even indirectly, Neena realized that such a nightmare could easily become a reality if the girl was pushed too hard.
"You've got to let it out, somehow...."
But how? Neena herself usually resorted to shredding things when her temper reached the point of boiling over. She kept a closet at home stocked with comforters, pillows, newspaper, old rags, boxes of styrofoam peanuts, and other easily rippable items for just such occasions. When she was growing up, she had a favorite spot outside the village, where she kept a piece of wood that she could beat the boulders with.
But Nika?
"If you get angry enough, that thing'll kick in, won't it?" She motioned toward the shock bracelet. "Hm...."
Lifting her right hand to her collar Nika felt the device. The thing definitely gave her the shock of her life at the registration place.
"I don't think it will do anything if I just get mad..." She paused as she thought a bit more on the topic, "...unless my mutation kicks in but I'd have to get really mad I think. Though, I feel a little more in control after all our training sessions."
"I don't think it will do anything if I just get mad.... unless my mutation kicks in but I'd have to get really mad I think. Though, I feel a little more in control after all our training sessions."
Neena smiled around the nail she bit down on. "I'm glad they helped." She thought for a moment longer.
"Weeellll..... What about a screaming match? Or a shredding match? There's a few empty beds now," her smile faded, knowing what empty beds meant. "I don't think anyone will notice a few shredded pillows, or a mattress. I remember one of my stepmothers screaming into a pillow quite often."
Neena reached out to hold up one of Nika's hands. Referring to her claws, she asked, "You don't need adrenaline to make those work, right?"
The suggestions neena layed out before Nika sounded like fairly good ideas. They were ones that wouldn't get her in trouble or run the risk of her being shocked. At least not for letting out her feelings through physical exercise.
"Screaming and shredding things? I think I could do that pretty easily."
Letting her teacher examine her hands Nika knew the woman had more ideas going through her mind. Nika shook her head at neena's question.
"Screaming and shredding things? I think I could do that pretty easily. I can use my claws anytime I want. Why?"
Neena smiled. "Can't shred things without a good set of blades, is all. Speaking of which.... Where did I hide those?"
She frowned slightly. She had 'liberated' several paring knives from the kitchen nearly a month ago, but couldn't remember where she'd stashed them.
She shrugged, and let the girl's hand go. Her expression turned motherly again as she went back to Nika's comment about innocence. "Nika, these guards that have been taking advantage of you? Try not to judge the rest of humanity by them. Or other men. You're awful young yet to turn bitter."
The thought of tearing into something was very appealing. She could most definitely take out her anger and frustration. Nika imagined herself obliterating a few unused pillows and matresses. That semmed like a more efficient way to release her pent up emotions than screaming even though she felt she could scream so loud the space shuttle could hear her.
Nika refocused on Neena as her teacher began speaking of the humans. Her words were sincere yet concerned at the same time. Nika let her head hang down slightly.
"I know not everyone is like these people, but Neena we have to get out of here. I'm affraid something terrible will happen before much longer."
"I know not everyone is like these people, but Neena we have to get out of here. I'm affraid something terrible will happen before much longer."
Nika seemed to droop again. Neena would have loved to tell her that 'No, nothing bad will happen; we'll get out of here before it does'. But truth be told? Nika was probably right.
Neena sighed, loosing interest in her nail, and looked out at the night's darkness. Night was deceptively calm in this place. Without her special eyesight, the darkness hid the fortified walls and run-down grounds from view, leaving only the sounds of the breeze caressing the trees in the air. Even the insects were silent.
Like the calm before a sandstorm.
"Nika, I sure hope you're wrong. For all of our sakes." She sighed and rubbed her eyes. Then she looked back at the girl, signature smile back on her face.
"I don't know about you, but the first thing I'm going to do when we get out of here is to raid the nearest ice cream shoppe. I would kill for a rocky road, pistacio and strawberry triple-scoop, complete with brainfreeze."
At the mention of going out for ice cream Nika perked up. She remembered going out for ice cream with Daria. They had a good time that day. Lots of people looked at the two cat girls but it didn't bother either of them. Being looked at strangely for your entire life has a good way of making you become immune to being stared at. What happened to her friend anyways?
"Oh! I wanna go too! The last time I went out for ice cream was with Daria. We had a blast and I've been wanting to get out again ever since then."
