From a hilltop, Boribeth surveyed the small town below her, her brown eyes squinting in the sun. She watched the humans going about their pitiful existence, knowing that they were unaware they would soon be extinct. A woman came out of a store, her arms carrying an infant child, and Boribeth felt a lump forming in her throat. "Not today, little one," she though, "but soon..." Hunger consumed her, for she had not eaten in days. The drought had withered the berries and dried up the local springs. She did not relish entering the world of humans, but her supplies needed replenishing and she had stolen a little bit of money from a campsite down the road. She descended the hill and crossed into a parking lot, then into the local grocery store. Shivering at the abnormal cold, stale air inside, she crossed her arms and headed toward the produce aisle. A woman walked past her, chatting on her hands-free cell phone and it took all Boribeth's strength not to rip it off the woman's head.
A perky employee approached her, getting well within her personal space and said, "are ya finding everything ya need today?" "Breath mints," Boribeth said, wrinkling her nose. "Oh...um...lemme see...aisle three," the employee said with a smile. "Then I suggest you head there immediately," Boribeth replied, her back already to the guy. She quickly filled her little basket with fruits, nuts, and vegetables, and found herself standing in front of a complete row of bottled water, shelf after shelf of the liquid. "Destroy your planet, then make people pay for water," Boribeth said, barely audible, "yes...humanity is the intelligent species." Sighing, she picked up a 12-pack and headed for the checkout line. As the cashier rang up her purchase she asked Boribeth, "are you a member of our Super Savers Club?" "No...why should I be," Boribeth asked. "Oooo, well you get special coupons in the mail." "What if I don't have an address," Boribeth asked, "aren't you discriminating against the homeless?" The woman didn't reply, just scanned away, a confused look on her face. Boribeth paid and carried her bags back up the hill, where she sat down on a large rock and sniffed an apple. "Pesticides," she groaned. She rolled the apple around in the dirt, scrubbing it hard, then sniffed again. "Better."
As she sat there, she had the feeling that something wasn't right in the world...that her life was about to change dramatically... very soon.
