Character
Personality: Adeline is a sweet and loving girl, if not a bit naive. She has a warm heart, and is open and friendly to nearly everybody that she meets. If she sees somebody upset, or angry, she often finds herself tempted to try and cheer them up. Negative emotions make Adeline a sad mouse.
Quietly self-assured, Adeline can at first come across as aloof to other people. She has a habit of saying what is on her mind, no matter how relevant, and often finds herself voicing random thoughts. For someone who may not know her well, Adeline can come across as quirky, even eccentric at times. Her upbringing has given her a strong sense of community, which can come across as her being nosy or meddling because she will often invite herself to try and solve other people's problems without invitation. She also has a tendency to snoop.
A performer and nomad at heart, Adeline gets restless easily, and can often be found trying to become the centre of attention. This can also lead to her acting without considering her consequences.
Having lived most of her life outside of society's norm, she can be a bit clueless when it comes to certain social graces. Mutations
Mutation description:
"Mouseymancer"
Adeline has the ability to bond and communicate with any variety of mouse. By creating a psychic link to the animal, Adeline is able to telepathically speak with it, although she tends to communicate verbally due to a lack of understanding about her own power. The link creates an imprint of her own psyche onto the mouse. This gives the bonded animal a more 'human' understanding, meaning that language, as well as other human thought processes, can be shared between the mouse and Adeline. As a rule, if Adeline understands something, then the mouse can understand it as well.
When a bond is made, a mouse's personality becomes more sophisticated. A facet of Adeline's personality is passed on at random. Once the bond has been made, the animal may become more 'human' in it's moods. This means that each bonded mouse will have it's own individuality, depending on what traits it inherited. For instance, a mouse which was imprinted with a high level of Adeline's anger might find itself become more aggressive, whereas a mouse that was imprinted with her fear will be timid and scared.
The bonding process is tactile. When there is an opportunity for bonding, all Adeline needs to do is hold a mouse in her hands until the bonding is complete. The process takes about one minute, and she describes the sensation as being like 'burrowing through damp soil', or 'swimming through mud' until she can hear the mouse's thoughts.
Adeline emits pheromones that mimic a mouse's scent. This means that she often finds herself as a beacon to other unbonded mice, who pick up on her scent. Although she can't communicate directly with an unbonded mouse, the scent marks her as a dominant creature, as well as a likely source to find food from. As such, Adeline will often find herself surrounded by mice from nearby colonies.
In addition to her 'mousey' appearance, Adeline also loosely shares some of a mouse's senses. Her ears are sharp of hearing, able to hear the high frequency calls of other nearby mice. Her sense of smell is quite strong, though not to a superhuman extent. Her eyes, however, are quite weak, and she must wear corrective lenses as a result.
Strengths: - If they are cooperative enough, Adeline's bonded mice can help her in various tasks from stealing food, to spying, to acting as 'ambassadors' to other unbonded mouse colonies. - While she cannot communicate directly with any unbonded mouse, Adeline is able to negotiate with them using a bonded mouse as proxy and interpreter. This allows her to make certain deals and arrangements with a specific colony, often with the promise of food. - If Adeline finds herself threatened, she may find a swarm of allied mice coming to her protection. - While the majority of her teeth are normal, Adeline's four incisor teeth are more like a mouse's teeth in that they are both sharper and stronger than an average human's, capable of chiseling through wood and plaster. Chewing through such things, however, is neither very practical or pleasant. - Slightly enhanced smell and hearing
Weaknesses and Limitations: - Adeline can only bond to three mice at any one time. The bond cannot be broken voluntarily, and lasts until the death of either the mouse or Adeline. - A bond does not guarantee an initially close relationship between Adeline and the mouse. If a particularly difficult trait is imprinted on the mouse, it can create a situation where Adeline must gain the trust of the creature. - Because Adeline has not quite realised that her communication with her bonded mice is a telepathic one, she only communicates with her mice verbally. She hears the thoughts of her bonded mice as voices in her mind. - Unlike normal human teeth, Adeline's incisors grow at a constant rate. In order to keep them worn down to a manageable level, she must gnaw. If they grow too much, they can get in the way, and make it difficult for Adeline to eat and speak. - Poor eyesight - The pheromones that Adeline emits gives her a particularly 'mousy' smell. Though it can be covered with perfumes, it is both noticeable and uncontrollable. - It can be difficult to make new acquaintances when you are constantly surrounded by vermin...
Physical Abilities
General Physical Capabilities: Life in the circus has left Adeline more agile and flexible than most, having trained in gymnastics, acrobatics, contortion, and the trapeze for the majority of her life. Her stamina is also quite good. Unfortunately, she is not very physically strong. Fighting Style: A ninja knows when to make a tactical withdrawal... (ie. run away) Fighting Style Pros/Cons: If she cannot run away, Adeline may be protected by a swarm of vermin. Though not necessarily a massive threat, they can provide a distraction for Adeline to slip away. If she is unable to escape, there is not much that Adeline can do, short of delivering a nasty bite or weak punch.
History Of Your Character Adeline was born to Claude and Julie Lajoie, and became the fourth generation in the Lajoie dynasty to be born into the strange, and wonderful life of a traveling circus. The circus, founded by her great-grandparents had been passed down through the family, and each generation had found itself carrying the torch of circus tradition for the next. From day one, Adeline found herself immersed in a life that varied from the standard model. Her childhood was spend on and off both the road and stage.
Rather than growing up in one place, with only a mother and father for guidance and supervision, Adeline was raised amongst the troupe community. Made up of family members, other circus lifers, special guests, and hire-ons, life on the road was exciting, exotic and always unpredictable. She began to learn the trade of her family almost as soon as she could walk, the big-top's lure coursing through her blood.
In the off seasons when the circus would be off the road, Adeline and her parents would live in their family home in New Orleans, although to Adeline, the road was her true home. Her education shifted between being home schooled by her Aunt and parents while on tour, and sitting tests and final exams at a public school whenever she returned to the city. She found these times the most difficult, having grown up in a vastly different environment. With her lengthy absences, and sudden appearances, it didn't take long for her to gain a reputation amongst the other children as 'the weird circus kid'.
Having always been an animal lover, Adeline's closest friends had always been the animals of the circus. Her grandfather, the circus' animal handler and trainer, let her spend time with many of the creatures, and soon noticed that the girl had taken a liking to the mice that were used for small performances outside the main event. It did not take long for her parents and family members to notice her attachment to the creatures. When she was 9, after learning how to train the mice and get them to perform, Adeline took over the mouse performances from her grandfather. Having learnt many of the trades the circus had to offer, it was not long before the young girl took to the stage, specialising in juggling, tightrope, and acrobatics.
At the age of 13, Adeline's fixation with her mice began to become more noticeable. She would carry them around with her wherever she went, and often spend much time alone with her mice. It was around this time that she confessed to her parents that she could speak to three of her performing mice, and understand their replies, and had been able to for years. Where a regular parent may respond with fear and confusion at such a statement, Adeline's parents came to the conclusion that their daughter was possibly a mutant. The circus trade, after all, held it's fair share of mutants and misfits. Life continued on for the Lajoie family much as it always had. Soon after, small physical changes began to surface. Adeline grew whiskers (her parents had first mistakenly thought that she had snuck into the makeup and costume trailer), her ears began to grow, and most noticeable of all, she began to smell like mice, even when there were none to be found. At first Adeline was excited, as her mutations meant that she was finding herself with more and more new mouse friends. While performing, it was easy to incorporate her new appearance with her acrobatic acts. It didn't take long for someone in the troupe to give her a new stage name: 'La Petite Souris'. Of course, most of the audience thought it was all clever make up.
But when she would return to the city, and went to school, Adeline's differences were not so celebrated. Without the lights and music, she was just a girl who had whiskers and large abnormal ears. She was the loner who spend most of her time speaking with mice. Thick rimmed glasses didn't help. And the smell. Because she was used to it, Adeline had never truly noticed.Living amongst animals and sweaty work crews, it was easy for her to be lost in a sea of stench. But the other children noticed. And so began the cruel passage of taunts and teenage stigma. Though she endured through it pretty well, even the strongest of wills can break. So when one particular girl decided to hide a mouse trap in her schoolbag, discovered by one sore pinkie finger, Adeline threw a particularly colourful insult, one that she had heard her Uncle use once before, at the girl. The girl didn't take it well, and promptly grabbed Adeline by the hair with the intention of doing harm. Much to everybody's surprise, Adeline's most of all, a colony of mice that she had befriended began pouring from the school buildings and rushed over Adeline's attacker. No real physical harm was done, a few scratch marks and small bites, but the girl and her fellow onlookers freaked out. It wasn't long before phone calls were made, and parents were called in. The final result was that Adeline was no longer welcome at this particular school.
Unsure of where else to send their daughter, Adeline's parents began searching for a solution. Not being the most tech savvy of people, the internet being a foreign concept to the Lajoie family, it took a while. Being back on the road for the beginning a new season made it even harder. But sure enough, word eventually came of a school in New York. One that catered specifically to mutants. Their minds made up, they enrolled Adeline and started putting together the funds to send her to New York. Much to Adeline's protests.
She wanted nothing more than to stay on the road.

The sun bore down on her, taunting hot. Sighing for the millionth time, Adeline felt a familiar creeping across her left shoulder. She glanced over at the stark white mouse looking at her with concern, and mustered up a smile.
"Don't worry, Mouse Man. I'm sure it'll be fine! After all, we're Mouse Clan!"
Mega Mouse Man stared unconvinced for a moment, before squeaking her consent. After all, if Adeline believed it, then so did she. Satisfied, the little white mouse set to cleaning herself. There was a scampering on the ground. This mouse, grey with a white forehead, climbed onto her shoe and waited patiently to be picked up. Bending down, Adeline scooped him up and placed him on her right shoulder.
The mouse moved across her shoulder, closer to her neck and stood up on his hind legs, nudging Adeline with his nose. {"Adeline! I found some broken bits of biscuit on the floor inside! Someone missed a bin..."} Clearly, Basil was excited.
"Okay, you can take the others, but be careful. I don't think the staff would be too happy to see you guys." Basil squeaked in excitement, and even Mega Mouse Man perked up slightly. Both mice scampered down Adeline's jacket sleeves, down her jeans, Mega Mouse Man squeaking something about a race as they hit the dusty ground. As the two mice hurried away, Adeline pulled open the flap of her jacket pocket. A brown mouse was nestled inside, on a small pile of shredded paper.
"Aren't you going with them?"
Speedy cracked an eye open, before shaking his head and going back to sleep.
Sighing yet again, Adeline tapped her foot on the ground and checked the clock once more. The minute hand was moving much too quickly for her liking. If it kept going at this rate, the bus would arrive and she would have to leave everything. Her Mom and Dad. Her Uncle and Aunt, and little Franco. Grandpa. Steve the Juggler, and Cannonball Joe. Tara, Cara, and Mara, the trapeze triplets. Bill, Grandpa's tiger, that had bitten that townie they had taken on in Georgia...
The circus. Everything and everyone she had ever known.
"Oh, come on sweetie, it's not going to be that bad." Her dad had come out of the terminal, a coffee in his hand. Adeline's mother trailed behind. "You'll probably meet lots of interesting people, with all sorts of cool powers!" He grinned at her, before patting her lovingly on the head. "It will be better than the last school, I promise."
Adeline nodded, but didn't feel too reassured.
"Hey... Come on." Mom's soothing voice. "We'll see each other soon enough. I mean, who are we? What is it you're always saying?" she asked, bending down and putting her hands on Adeline's shoulders to look her in the eye. Mom's lips crinkled into a smirk, and Adeline couldn't help but find it contagious, grinning brightly as she answered.
Her own little motto, and designation for the Lajoie family. Basil, Speedy, and Mega Mouse Man included.
"Mouse Clan!"
