History Of Your Character Erika was born blind and lived for almost ten years without knowing anything of sight, colors, expressions. While she grew to expect that out of her day she eventually adapted, as all do, especially while young. She learned to appreciate voices, how it sounded, everything that it was. Eventually, she could her their voice when it was sad, or angry, even distracted. She spent a lot of time with her mother, going everywhere with her, building a sense of balance knowing where her body is even in the blank darkness.
Like a switch the world turned on and suddenly, she toppled over; fracturing her skull and sending herself in a coma for nine years where her mother sat by her side, holding her hand. It was emotional for Erika, as she sat above her body, every night and just stared at her face. Over the years her mother kept staring at her face, keeping it clean and showing her what love was. As she watched, the world seemed to make more sense, she saw what her mother saw so long as they touched. She experienced the room each night as she lay there, understanding what sight truly was.
For years she began to focus herself, in comas, they say you can still hear; it's true. Erika knew where her mother was before her mother's warmth was felt on her hand. Her mother knocked on the door every day before she entered, opened the door, took twelve long steps and then pulled up a chair. She began trying to reach out to her when she began feeling trapped in her body. Trying to move her arm up each day, in the hopes that her mother's noises would wake her up. She'd be able to see her, hug her and they would go away back home.
On the day she came back from the cool grasp of never ending consciousness, she could hear the sounds of panic in the street. Something bad was happening right outside and there wasn't a thing she could do to help anyone. It sounded like people were fighting, yelling about mutants, the exact cries made no sense to her. But then, the sound of the door opening without a knock tipped her off. Steady, high heeled steps began to cross the floor. The foot steps were slow and steady as they skulked up to the bed side. There was someone fumbling around in their pockets and Erika knew that she had to do something and so she tried to see as if she were in that person's head doing what they were doing. She could see, for a brief moment as the woman, rolled her arm, she could see a needle, the woman wore gloves, but once again she went blind. A cold needle pierced her skin and she ended her there. Instantly, she was watching the woman do what she was about to do. Erika's eyes shot open and her arms flung out as she reached out for the woman, her defenses almost nothing to this girl who saw right through everything. She quickly knocked her off balance and the woman fell to the ground. Only moments after there was another visitor, her mother, who had heard the sounds coming from inside and rushed inside to see her daughter sitting up gasping for air in the bed and a doctor on the ground. Erika was shaken and confused, but escaped from the event otherwise unscathed; with her mother crying up a jubilant storm.
It only took a few weeks to figure out her diagnosis, mutant. Of course with the registrations over and removed she actually might stand to live a normal life, just be blind like the rest of the "normal folk". The doctor simply recorded the problem as blindness and let it go; her mother didn't.
Now Erika stands before this school, "for her kind", she will learn a bit more, understand herself a little bit more as well. With a smile, she plans to work her way through the school and master herself. To carve a new life for herself in this world, on her own terms.

Erika sat quietly in the front seat of the car with her mother right beside her. She shifted her weight, feeling her body as if moved, it had changed so much since she was younger; she was taller, thinner, and actually looked like a young woman. Watching the change was interesting, time truly passed and her face showed each day. The worst part of the process was watching her body slowly wither as it's muscle tone slowly disappeared, she was healthy, but very light, with little strength and looking at the options, a little strength would be good at least she could move. It was nice to be awake, but there was still so much to take in at the same time, she always had something on her mind, something new that she had to know, something that she could see for the first time, something to enjoy.
Her mother rambled on constantly, Erika tried to listen, but her mother's idle chatting was just her trying to get her ready and to pull the wool over her eyes about this new school. It was like the day that her dog died during the coma. Even though Erika wasn't all there her mother still tried to make her feel better with a story that made it seem better than it really was. She could remember it quite well, it was rough knowing that her dog died, but she was blind, not dumb; going to an "old dogs home" was a creative lie though.
"Here we are Honey!"
Her mother's voice seemed elated, for her? Maybe. Now that she would have friends, she could live normally among "others of her kind". It was weird how people, put things when they want you to go somewhere, they isolate you make you feel like you have less in common with them and more with wherever you're going. For the past couple nights as they tried getting her used to the idea she described everyone else as being "like her" it made her seem sub-human, as if she couldn't be a part of her family anymore now that she had become a mutant. Erika knew that her mother cared, but it only made it hurt more that her mother was the one pushing the move. Erika had just recently gotten her mother back and now she was expected to leave her once again.
Erika reached over for her mother's warmth. Although she had been both quiet and blind throughout the entire car ride, she had to see her new home, but it required her to reach out for the bittersweet comfort of her mother's idle hand. Although she could barely keep herself from breaking down, she knew that there would be some solace within her contact. This was going to be everything for the next few chapters of her life and yet, she would never be able to remember her mother's face.
Her hand grazed her mother's arm and suddenly she could see a mansion, just over the wheel of the car, in the periphery of her mother, who was focused on the driveway. Erika's arm slowly drifted towards her mother's hand running down the length of her forearm until their fingers folded into each other; she could feel emotions being held in the back of her throat, but Erika had to make sure she didn't cry, not in front of her mother. From what she could glean from her mother's half sight the mansion was immense, three floors, with innumerable windows. It was like looking into the biggest house in the world. People say that buildings in the city are large, but she had never actually seen the city, and this by far took every cake there was that she had seen.
The car's breaks squeaked and the pair came to a stop.
"Mom... I don't want to go..."
"Babygirl, put on a smile and they'll have to love you."
