Seven beats of stunned silence, and one of many possible futures unfurled like a carpet. Crash. Wrath. The remote control shattered against the wall, mere inches away from the living room mirror. It wasn't a mistake. A boy poked his head in at the noise, and quickly retreated into the kitchen when he saw that the person the X-man seemed to be in a standoff with was on the TV screen. Grown-ups are so weird. Gluttony. Taking more than one's share. Taking it all. Taking judgement into one's hands. Taking responsibility. Taking control. Taking a turn. Taking lives. All of them. One, two, three, four, five. Sloth. Not doing things. Temptation to step back. Sin by idleness. The easy way out. Standing by and watching the world burn. Claiming that justice has been done, when all is over. Letting things sort themselves out. Judgement without participation. Leaving the X-comm turned off. Let's burn this city down.Greed. Surprisingly similar to gluttony. Wanting. Wanting to be everywhere, all the time. Wanting to save, to help, to protect, to create. To mitigate. To fix. And also to seek, to find, to stand, to claim. To be more than just a part. To be the key to something. Trade name for greatness. Taking two bullets for someone who never asked for it. Envy. How easy it must be. How easy it would have been, before. Before the X-men. Before the dream. One could just run off, join the Court, no qualms, no holding back. Believe in someone and fight for her. No doubt that many will do it. No doubt they will succeed in so many ways. Must be great to have sisters. Lust. Red hair. Pride. Once upon a time there was a Knight who made a promise to a Lady to protect her from the Evil Queen. The Lady was full of snark, and the Evil Queen had butterfly wings. The Knight put his honor on one arm of the scale, and the wings in the other.
